Iranian MP Slams UAE for Imprudent, Irresponsible Policies

Gholam-Ali Jafarzadeh Imenabadi

The head of the Iranian delegation to the 136th assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Bangladesh, Gholam-Ali Jafarzadeh Imenabadi, lashed out at the UAE for its imprudence and irresponsibility in dealing with the crises in the Middle East, saying the Islamic Republic of Iran favours reduced tensions in the region and endeavours to forge friendly ties with all Persian Gulf littoral states.

Responding to the claims made by his Emirati counterpart in the IPU meeting in Bangladesh on April 2, Jafarzadeh Imenabadi noted that, “Today, the UAE’s representative made false and unfounded claims against Iran.”

According to a Farsi report by ICANA, he expressed surprise at the fact that the representative of a country whose fighter jets drop bombs on the innocent people of Yemen, accuses Iran of meddling in other states’ internal affairs.

The Iranian MP added the UAE’s policy and approach towards the ongoing crises in the region, including those in Syria and Yemen, have proved the country’s imprudence and irresponsibility.

He stressed that, “We have always done our best to develop friendly and good neighbourly relations with our neighbours, particularly the Persian Gulf littoral states, and ease tensions in the region.”

“We, once again, stress and extend our willingness and invitation [respectively] for holding talks with regional countries to clear up misunderstandings and revive the friendly ties the people of our states have always had throughout the history.”

Grand Mosque of Urmia: An Architectural Masterpiece

Grand Mosque of Urmia(30)

Situated in the old part of the city, the Grand Mosque of Urmia was constructed in the 13th century. However, some believe that it used to be a fire temple before the Islamic era. It is the city’s congregational mosque (Jāme),

Archaeologists who studied the mosque’s architectural structure maintain that its dome dates back to Seljuk era (11th century).

Meanwhile, there are historical and geographical documents dating back to the 10th century in which the mosque’s name is mentioned. Therefore, some researchers believe the mosque belongs to pre-Seljuk eras.

However, the date written on the mosque’s altar shows the year 1256, which coincides with the time of Ilkhanate rulers.

Here are ISNA’s photos of the Grand Mosque of Urmia:

7% Decrease in Iran Road Crashes despite Increased Trips

During the first two days of this year’s Nowruz holidays, 145 people were killed and 2,950 were injured in road mishaps, the deputy traffic police chief, Musa Amiri, said.

Head of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Pir Hossein Kolivand announced on Monday that 30,263 people were injured in road crashes during March 20-29.

“The exact numbers about casualties and injured people during the two-week holidays will be announced next week by the Iranian Legal Medicine Organization (ILMO),” IRNA quoted him as saying.

During last year’s holiday season 389 people were killed in 294 road accidents in which 147 drivers were violators of traffic laws while in the remaining cases low-quality vehicles and unsafe roads were blamed for the fatal collisions.  According to ILMO, over the past five years 5,384 people died in road crashes during the Nowruz holidays.

On Sunday, Colonel Mohammad Hussein Hamidi, the traffic police chief said the number of people killed on the spot has decreased by 7% compared to the same period last year. The number of journeys increased by 10% in comparison to the previous year, IRNA quoted him as saying.

“A total of 30 air ambulances were responsible for helping the inured. The number of air ambulances has increased by 10% compared to the same period last year,” he said. The measure decreased the mean time from injury to arrival in hospitals and reduced the number of people killed at the scene of accidents. However the number is still high compared to other countries.”

Hamidi had said earlier that the rate of road mishaps dropped by 38% over the past decade.

He linked the decline to closer interaction between police and other institutions, and use of advanced technology to control traffic and the motorists.

In the past two years 2,200 new surveillance cameras were installed across the country to improve monitoring of arterial suburban roads to 30,000 km from 5,000 km in 2015. The cameras can record seven types of violations (5 in big cities and 2 on suburban roads).

Additionally, cameras installed on the two main northern roadways of Chalus and Haraz, are able to record overtaking from the wrong side and other lawlessness on the road.

Smart cameras have also been installed on police patrols in the cities. Some road surveillance cameras have been upgraded to ensure better performance in recording traffic violations.

Currently, most surveillance cameras in the cities have been upgraded to record five offenses: speeding, running the red light, driving in prohibited areas, entry into even-odd restricted zones and stopping on a crosswalk. On highways they record two offenses: excessive speed and failure to pay toll.

According to ILMO’s latest report on road death toll (released on March 4), during the first ten months of the past year 13,826 people lost their lives in road accidents, of whom, 10,825 were men and 3,001 were women.

Road traffic injuries have been neglected in the global health agenda for years despite being predictable and preventable, Financial Tribune reported.

An average, 3,000 deaths in road mishaps occur every day around the world and they are ranked as the 11th most common cause of death in developing countries, with young people between the age of five and 24 facing the highest risk. People aged between 15 and 44 years account for 48% of global road traffic deaths.

Low and middle income countries have less than half of the world’s vehicles, but they contribute to over 90% of the total number of road traffic deaths.

According to figures released by World Atlas in September 2016, Iran is ranked 4th on the list of countries with the highest road traffic deaths.

A pattern of traffic accident rates in some provinces indicates that provincial roads (in particular in Fars, Khorasan Razavi, Tehran provinces) are not safe for driving.

According to the latest report released by ILMO website (www.lmo.com) during the first ten months of the previous year (ended March 20), Fars (1,282), Khorasan Razavi (995), Tehran (987), Isfahan (883), and Kerman (781) provinces had the highest rates of traffic-related deaths.

Iran’s Aseman Airlines Signs Deal to Buy 60 Boeing Planes

The document was signed on March 18, during a meeting with Boeing representatives in Tehran, Aseman told the Financial Tribune on Tuesday.

Aseman expects to finalize a contract in 2-3 months. The deal is now pending a license from the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control, according to the airliner.

The airline is also in talks with Boeing’s European rival Airbus to add two A340s and seven A321s to its fleet that is the third largest fleet in Iran, after Iran Air and Mahan.

Aseman’s has three A320-200s, one A340-300, four ATR72-200s, two ATR72-500s, three B727-200s, one B727-200(F), two B737-400s and 19 Fokker 100s.

Iran Aseman Airlines, owned by Iran’s Civil Service Pension Foundation, would be the second Iranian airline to purchase brand new aircraft from Boeing after the lifting of the sanctions in January 2016.

Back in December, Iran Air finalized a deal with Boeing on 80 jets including 50 narrow-body 737max 8s, 15 wide-body 777-300ERs and 15 777-9s, which will be delivered to Iran Air over 10 years.

It was reported that the Iranian airline was set to lease seven A320neo from an undisclosed Irish firm following the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization and the Irish Aviation Authority in Tehran in February.

4 Iranian Works Included in Bologna Children’s Book Fair Catalogue

Bologna Children’s Book Fair

Bologna Children’s Book Fair, which kicked off on Monday, is a 4-day event being held from April 3 to 6 at the Bologna Fair Centre in Bologna, Italy.

The event offers a great chance to discover the latest market trends in the book industry, and to meet the most important illustrators, authors etc. dedicated to children’s books.

Iran’s programs during the event include a special program called ‘Iran’s Day’, a program dedicated to introduction of Iranian culture, literature and illustration, followed by a lecture by Dr. Fatemeh Asgari (Faculty member of Foreign Languages at Tehran University) on the ‘translation of Pinocchio in Iran’.

Two Italian illustrators, Simone Rea and Arianna Vairo, will talk about their experiences while in Tehran. The two illustrators held a workshop at the Iran Cultural Fairs Institute in Tehran in January 27 and on the occasion of Italy being the guest of honour of the 30th Tehran International Book Fair.

65 Iranian titles dedicated to children’s books will be presented to visitors during the fair, Mehr reported.

Works by Rashin Kheyriyeh, Narges Mohammadi, Farshid Shafi’ee, and Hassan Ameh-Kan are shown in the Book Fair’s catalogue along with works by 71 other illustrators from around the world.

Pro-Clinton Columnist Longs for Job in Trump Administration

Andrew Bowen

The English website ‘Arab News’ in a recent report announced that it will discontinue publishing articles by US columnist Andrew Bowen.

“The reason behind this decision is the columnist insisting that this newspaper deletes previous articles dating back prior to the recent US election where he was in favour of Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton,” the website noted.

“Bowen, a visiting scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, has repeatedly requested the removal of these articles stating that this is needed for him ‘to be cleared’ for what he claims to be a possible job with the new Donald Trump administration’s State Department,” it added.

“Bowen also insinuated — verbally and in writing — that he will seek the support of influential friends and contacts to help remove the articles,” Arab News went on to say.

Arab News referred to such a request as “unprofessional journalistically”, and wished Bowen the best of luck in his job application.

Iran Rejects ‘Ridiculous’ Claims of Support for Taliban

“Today, the representative of Afghanistan’s delegation [to the IPU assembly] raised a baseless claim about support by Iran for Taliban. This allegation is made while Iran is one of the main victims of Taliban,” Gholam Ali Jafarzadeh Imenabadi said in the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka on Monday while pointing to the massacre of 11 Iranians, including nine diplomats, in the Afghan city of Mazar-i-Sharif by the Taliban in 1998.

He added that Iran was the first country that warned the international community about the adverse consequences of the emergence the Taliban militant group.

“Iran has paid a heavy material and non-material price due to the crisis in Afghanistan,” the legislator said.

Taliban militants were removed from power following the 2001 US-led invasion of Afghanistan, but they have stepped up activities in recent months, attempting to overrun several provinces.

Thousands of foreign troops are still in Afghanistan, but apparently maintaining security remains an issue amid almost frequent incidents of violence across the country.

Imenabadi noted that the Afghan representative had made the groundless allegation while ignoring the glaring reality of Iran hosting millions of Afghan refugees in over three decades, emphasizing that such moves would neither help Kabul resolve its issue nor serve its interests.

He reiterated that Iran was among the countries that played an important role in reconstructing and assisting Afghanistan with its development process.

He recommended members of the Afghan delegation to avoid making “irrational and destructive” comments and being swayed by ill-wishers.

A Timeline for Iran’s Upcoming Presidential, Local Elections

The following is a timeline of the milestones in the forthcoming elections:

–     April 11-15: registration of candidates for the elections

During this period, presidential hopefuls are expected to register for taking part in the forthcoming presidential race. Right now, there are over 220 political parties and factions recognized by the Iranian Interior Ministry, but only 10 percent of them are actively recruiting members and weighing on domestic policies. Two major political camps are at the heart of Iran’s politics; Reformists and Principlists and anyone not in these two camps is considered an independent.

Local Elections

–     April 16-20: vetting of candidates by the Guardian Council

Presidential elections are monitored by the Guardian Council and the elections of city and village councils are observed by the Parliament. All candidates should be finally vetted by the Guardian Council.

–     April 21-25: possible extension of vetting process

During this period, the Guardian Council can decide whether to extend the time considered for the vetting of election candidates. This usually happens when vetting all candidates is not possible during the set time frame or new evidence on the qualifications of candidates emerges, which calls for more work by the Guardian Council.

iran election

–     April 25-27: announcement of approved candidates

In this period, the Guardian Council will release the final list of candidates it has approved to run for the election. Following the announcement, the candidates will be given a set time to launch their election campaigns during which they will explain their future plans to people who are to vote for them.

–     April 28-May 17: presidential election campaign

Election campaigns for those running for president will officially kick off on April 28. Two major political parties in Iran are Principlists and Reformsits; however, a new political group named Moderates has made its way into political arena after the 2013 presidential elections. Islamic Coalition Party has officially announced that it will nominate Mostafa Mirsalim, a former minister of culture and Islamic guidance, for the election. Mohammad Mehdi Zahedi, a member of the Parliament, announced his nomination as well. Hamid Baqaei, an Iranian politician and senior adviser to former president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has also announced his candidacy as an ‘independent’ candidate.

 presidential election

–     May 18: pre-election campaign silence

On May 18, all presidential candidates will officially wrap up their campaigns as they are legally required to stop all activities aimed at their election as of this day, which precedes the election day.

–     May 19: Election day

On this day, Iranians will go to the polls to cast their votes for their next president. Principlists and Reformists are archrivals in the elections. Before President Hassan Rouhani, Ahmadinejad served as Iran’s president for two terms for eight years, but he has decided not to join the race this time around.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has urged Iranian people to show enthusiastic presence in the forthcoming elections, saying that elections is one of two pillars of religious democracy, which make the Iranian nation feel honored before the world.

Iran Condemns St. Petersburg Terrorist Attack

Russian police are hunting for two suspects in the wake of a bomb blast in the St Petersburg metro system that killed at least 11 people and wounded 45 more.

An unidentified explosive device went off on a train after leaving Sennaya Ploshchad station and heading to the Technology Institute station, Russia’s National Anti-Terrorist Committee said.

Russian security agencies found and defused a second explosive device at the Ploschad Vosstaniya station, one of the city’s busiest stations, the committee also said.

Condemning the attack, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi expressed sympathy with bereaved families of the victims.

“We once again remind the necessity for joint international efforts for seriously confronting terrorism regardless of motivations behind it (terrorism) and believe that there is no way to uproot these violent crimes except serious resolve and determination by all states and international bodies…”
