Hamadan has a green mountainous area in the foothills of the 3,574-metre Alvand Mountain, and is 1,850 metres above sea level.

The special nature of this old city and its historical sites attract tourists during the summer to this city, located approximately 360 kilometres (220 miles) southwest of Tehran.

In 2006, the Iranian Parliament named Hamadan the ‘Capital of Iranian History and Civilisation’.

It was the first capital city of the first dynasty ruling Iran, namely the Median Empire. However, the oldest relics discovered in Hamadan date back to Achaemenid era.

The main symbols of this city are the Ganj Nameh inscription, the Avicenna monument and the Baba Taher monument.

Here are ISNA’s photos of the old Iranian city:

The ISIS terrorists wore police uniforms and used a police vehicle to enter the city, 175 km (110 miles) north of Baghdad, police Colonel Khalid Mahmoud told Reuters. He said there were around 10 attackers, including two suicide bombers.

The ISIS’ Amaq news agency said seven suicide fighters attacked a police position and the home of the head of the city’s counter-terrorism service, who was killed. The assailants blew themselves up when they ran out of ammunition, it said.

A total of 31 bodies were taken to hospital, including 14 policemen, said Nawfal Mustafa, a doctor at the city’s main hospital. The death toll rose during the morning as the bodies of civilians killed in their shops were found.

Iran Prepared to Join Hands with Russia on Fight against Terror: President

Rouhani-Hassan

In a message to his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, on Tuesday, President Rouhani extended his and the Iranian people’s “deepest” sympathies to the Russian people and government over the terrorist incident, which led to the deaths and injuries of a number of innocent people.

“As it was raised in the recent talks with you in Moscow, eradication of all forms of terrorism regardless of its motives requires collective efforts by the international community and cooperation among all countries to counter the intellectual origin of these criminal groups and their supporters,” Rouhani said.

The president added that, accordingly, Iran is ready for any kind of cooperation with the Russian government in this field.

On Monday, a bomb blast in the St Petersburg metro system killed at least 14 people and wounded dozens more.

An unidentified explosive device went off on a train after leaving Sennaya Ploshchad station and heading to the Technology Institute station, Russia’s National Anti-Terrorist Committee said.

Russian security agencies found and defused a second explosive device at the Ploschad Vosstaniya station, one of the city’s busiest stations, the committee also said.

British PM Refuses to Wear Headscarf in Riyadh Visit

British PM Refuses to Wear Headscarf in Riyadh Visit

May landed in Riyadh on Tuesday on the second leg of her three-day tour of the Middle East and risked angering her hosts by refusing to cover her head.

She follows in the footsteps of former US First Lady Michelle Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, both of whom caused offence on trips to Saudi Arabia by not wearing a headscarf.

However, May has insisted she wants to be a role model to women in Saudi Arabia who still suffer extraordinary oppression in everyday life.

“I hope people will see me as a woman leader, and will see what women can achieve and how women can be in significant positions,” she said.

In Saudi Arabia women are banned from driving, allowed little contact with men and are unable to marry or leave the country without permission from their father or husband, Mirror reported.

Hoisting Non-Iraqi Flags in Kirkuk Can Cause Tension: Iran

Kurdistan-Iraq

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said Tehran maintains that raising any flags other than, or next to, that of Iraq in the northern Iraqi province of Kirkuk is a tension-creating move which is against the country’s Constitution.

According to a Farsi report by ISNA, commenting on the recent developments in Kirkuk Province, Qassemi added Iran’s main policy and stance towards Iraq is to defend the country’s territorial integrity and central government.

He said Iran stresses that all sides and parties in the country are required to remain committed to Iraq’s Constitution and resolve their disputes, conflicts and differences by holding dialogue and adopting legal solutions and approaches.

Therefore, he added, flying any flags other than, or besides, that of Iraq in Kirkuk, which as per the country’s Constitution is under the sovereignty of the Iraqi federal government, is a tension-generating move and a violation of the Constitution.

Qassemi added fighting terrorism and cleaning up the remaining zones from the Takfiri and ISIS terrorists are the most important issues facing the Iraqi government and people.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran will also continue to support the Iraqi government in these regards. Recent moves and measures by some Iraqi sides and parties in Kirkuk are worrying as they can divert the attention and resources of the Iraqi government and nation away from the battle against terrorism.”

The Iraqi parliament voted on Saturday to ban the hoisting of flags of the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region over government buildings in Kirkuk.

The lawmakers passed the bill days after the Kirkuk Provincial Council decided to raise the regional flag next to the Iraqi national flag in front of some buildings.

Over 70 Killed in ‘Attack’ on Idlib: Syrian Opposition

Over 100 Killed in ‘Attack’ on Idlib: Syrian Opposition

According to opposition sources, over 70. or even over 100, have been killed in an attack on a chemical weapons factory in Idlib, Syria.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human rights said dozens were also wounded in the strike, which it said targeted the province on Tuesday.

The pro-opposition body cited “medical sources” as saying that victims displayed symptoms of asphyxiation, which they said could mean that chemical agents were used in the attack.

Those claims and the report about the alleged attack could not be independently verified.

‘Never in the past and never in the future’

Later on Tuesday, a Syrian military source said the Syrian army “does not [use] and has not” used chemical weapons, “not in the past and not in the future.”

Separately, a Syrian member of parliament, Sharif Shahada, said he believed a chemical arms depot set up and held by the militants in the area may have exploded in the incident. He said the Syrian government was not in possession of such weapons.

Shahada also accused Turkey of having supplied militants in Syria with chemical arms.

The United States and its allies have in the past accused the Syrian military of conducting chemical attacks. This is while Syria turned its entire chemical arsenal over to international monitors under a deal negotiated by Russia and the United States back in 2013, Press TV reported.

The Syrian stockpiles of chemical weapons were surrendered in a joint mission comprising representatives of the United Nations (UN) and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in 2014.
