Iranian Journalist Sentenced to Make Educational Documentary!

A court in the city of Nehbnandan in South Khorasan province, eastern Iran, has sentenced a reporter to make a 20-minute documentary on car crashes in Iran instead of paying a cash fine worth $125 to the government.

The reporter was found guilty by the court for violating traffic regulations which led to a major crash in Nehbandan leaving a motor cyclist wounded, a Farsi report by the Fars News Agency said on Wednesday.

The judge Mohammad Hassan Mokhtari said the decision to issue such a verdict was made given the good record and professional background of the offender.

“He has to put together a documentary within the next six months with the aim of promoting the culture of observing and respecting traffic regulations in our region,” he said.

Mokhtari went on to say the documentary needs to be prepared and handed in to the court as well as the provincial centre of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) within the deadline.

“The Judiciary has allowed judges to issue special verdicts with the aim of promoting public awareness and local cultures,” he added.

This is not the first time that Iranian judges issue unusual verdict for the offenders.

Back in September, a court in Kermanshah province offered alternative sentences for prisoners who take part in cleaning operations of historic monuments.

In February, a judge in southern Iran sentenced a teenager charged with carrying illicit drugs to learn Islamic rules instead of going to jail.

Also in January, a man who had been convicted of poaching, was sentenced to receiving environment training instead of imprisonment in Golestan Province.

Iran Rejects Mogherini’s Claims on Nuclear Deal Text

Abbas Araqchi

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi dismissed the remarks made by Mogherini about the JCPOA as mere verbosities, saying the full text of the deal is clear.

He also noted that it is not acceptable that anyone tries to offer one’s own interpretation of a sentence.

Speaking on the sidelines of the meeting of the Joint Commission of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action in Vienna on Wednesday, and in reaction to what Mogherini called disclosing a secret on Iran deal, Araqchi told reporters that there is a sentence in the JCPOA that says “the full implementation of the nuclear deal can contribute to regional and global peace and security.”

He went on to say that “the JCPOA has not been fully implemented yet, and it will take place after ten years, it means when all the sanctions have been completely removed. If they could prove that the deal has been a successful example of holding negotiations, then they can claim it has contributed to global peace.”

The Iranian senior diplomat also added that “of course, now we can say the deal has been able to resolve an issue to contribute to peace in a region which is full of tensions.”

Araqchi further stressed that these are verbosities made by some parties. He said “the US President Trump also maneuvered (to have the issue to their advantage) as well. However, the full text of the JCPOA is clear, and it has nothing to do with regional and global issues.”

In her closing statement on Iran nuclear deal during the plenary session of the European Parliament on Tuesday, Federica Mogherini claimed that in the preamble of the (nuclear) agreement (with Iran) there is a reference, half of a sentence, that says this agreement could open the way and could put the basis for different kind of more constructive engagement in the region.

“That sentence – here I may disclose a secret – was introduced on Iran’s request. Because the Iranian leadership at the time which is the same that has been reconfirmed today intended to use the agreement as a way to ask their own population, their own public opinion a mandate to engage with the rest of the world in a political battle, which inside Iran we know very well has happened, and is continuing to happen. And some of you refer to the fact that undermining the full implementation of the nuclear deal also weakens those in Iran political scene that are trying to commit in their own way, which is not ours, towards opening and an engagement with the rest of the world. Weakening or putting into question the JCPOA is a way to strengthen the hardliners in the political scene in Iran. Is it convenient for us? Not for us for sure,” said the EU’s High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

Iran FM Calls for “Collective” Efforts to End Yemen Plight

“Ending the nightmare that is the war in Yemen is our collective responsibility,” Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said in a tweet on Wednesday.

“We welcome the growing recognition that there is no military solution,” he went on to say.

He also stressed that the Islamic Republic is “ready to contribute to any effort towards an immediate ceasefire, humanitarian assistance and intra-Yemeni dialogue.”

Zarif had earlier urged the UN to consider and implement a four-point plan he proposed on 17 April 2015 right after the Saudi-led coalition initiated war on Yemen. He believes the same plan, which includes the following, remains to be applicable and indeed imperative in order to end this nightmare:

  1. Ceasefire and immediate end to all military operations;
  2. Unimpeded urgent humanitarian and medical assistance to the people of Yemen;
  3. Resumption of Yemeni-led and Yemeni-owned national dialogue, with the participation of the representatives of all political parties and social groups;

4. Establishment of an inclusive national unity government.

Iran Pursuing Situation of Iranian Woman Detained in Australia: Official

Ghashghavi

Qashqavi said Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and other officials at the foreign ministry are doing their utmost in this case.

The issue was discussed with the Australian authorities during the visit of the Islamic Republic’s diplomatic delegation to Canberra, and also during the visit of Australian officials to Tehran, he noted, adding to a Farsi report by Fars News Agency.

“We have held talks with the Australian ambassador for several times and every time he gave his word to pay attention to this case. Considering Qods Kani’s physical condition, her pregnancy, and the bad conditions there, we hope our follow-ups will soon produce results.”

Earlier in October, Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said that Qods Kani, an Iranian citizen residing in Australia, had been charged with violating the US commercial laws at the time of sanctions and was detained for the sanctions that do not exist at present.

In relevant remarks in October, Secretary of Iran’s Human Rights Council Mohammad Javad Larijani lashed out at Australian authorities for arresting Qods Kani to extradite her to the US.

Noting that detention and extradition of Qods Kani to the US is not acceptable, he described it as a violation of the international laws and norms.

Negar Qods Kani has been imprisoned since June 16, 2017, while being pregnant, and is currently being kept in unfavourable prison environment and suffering from malnourishment.

Iran Ready to Work with All Muslim States to Defend Al-Quds: Rouhani to OIC

Hassan Rouhani at OIC

Speaking at the extraordinary summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Istanbul on Wednesday, the President said, “The Islamic Republic of Iran stands ready to cooperate with each one of the Muslim countries to defend the holy Quds without any reservation or pre-condition”.

The president’s speech is as follows:

In the Name of God, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful

The Almighty God is exalted as he took His Servant by night from Masjid al-Haram to Masjid al-Aqsa, whose surroundings are blessed, to show him of our signs. Indeed, the Almighty God hears and sees.

(Verse One of al-Asra Chapter, Holy Quran)

Your Excellency Mr Erdogan, the Honourable President of Turkey,

Honourable Heads of Muslim States,

Distinguished Heads of Participating Delegates,

Assalamu Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu

I would like to begin with appreciating the efforts of my dear brother His Excellency Recep Tayyip Erdogan for organizing this very significant meeting. We have gathered here to exchange views on the appalling tragedy and the old wound of the Muslim Ummah in the last one hundred years which began with the Balfour conspiracy and is now experiencing a new chapter with the incorrect and unlawful promise of the US President to move the American Embassy to the holy city of al-Quds.

Today we speak about Quds which is the first Qiblah of Muslims and the third holiest Islamic shrine and is used to recognize the identity and credibility of Palestine. The uprising of the tireless people of Palestine during the past several days against the United States and the Zionist occupiers once again demonstrated that Palestinians would not pin their hope on empty plans and instead are insisting on their righteous demands.

The Muslim states fortunately were quick in reacting to the approach of the US administration towards the Quds City. And the formation of this summit indicates the correct interpretation by Muslims of the incorrect act of the US President.

Distinguished brothers and sisters,

Through every possible means, we should join hands to prevent the enforcement of such an unintelligent US act. However, we should also investigate what elements and reasons emboldened the US President to take such a rude and sacrilegious decision.

I believe that other than any other reason, the efforts of some countries to establish relations and even consultation and coordination with the Zionist regime have incited such a decision.

Instead of countering the threats of the Zionists, some countries in our region are aligned with the US and Zionists to prescribe the fate of Palestine—If such prescriptions are taken, the Zionists would permanently dominate the Palestinians.

Today it is no secret that the biggest enemy of the Jews are not the Muslims and Arabs but the dangerous project of Zionism. We Muslims, Christians and the Jews are the historical owners of this region. The Zionists however are stranger here and have imposed themselves on this region. The Zionists have in fact planted the seeds of terrorism and violence in this region since the beginning years of the past century.

During the past several decades, the Zionist regime has been responsible for the killing and displacement of Palestinians while disrespecting Islamic sanctity in Palestine. In committing all such crimes and murders, the United States has been supporting the Zionists with its veto power in the Security Council of the United Nations and has spared no effort in supplying all kinds of destructive weapons to the Zionist regime. Unfortunately, the United States was chosen as an arbitrator for years in negotiations. Or they sought the support of the US and relied on it for mediation.

The United States has never been an honest mediator. And it will never be. The recent act by the US administration made it clear for the people who wished a positive role by the US in resolving the issue of Palestine that the US is only seeking to secure the maximum interests of the Zionists and consider no respect for the legitimate demands of Palestinians.

Mr Chair

In order to counter such oppressive and low-minded measures, it is necessary to take lessons from the past. Therefore, I take the opportunity to propose the following actions:

1- It is necessary for this summit to strongly condemn the recent decision by the US administration to recognize al-Quds as the capital of the Zionist regime and move its embassy to the holy Quds.

2- Under the present circumstances, it is necessary for the Muslim world to get united against the Zionist regime. If we suffer from differences amongst ourselves over some issues, we should not be divided on defending the holy Quds and the Palestinian cause. All the problems of the Muslim world can be resolved through dialogue. It is only through Islamic unity that we can better support the rights of the Islamic Ummah and the holy Quds.

3- The US administration should be aware of the reality that the world of Islam does not remain indifferent towards the fate of Palestine and the holy Quds. And that ridiculing international approvals and ideas of nearly all the international community on the issue of Palestine would have political repercussions and costs.

4- It is imperative on the Muslim states to harmonize their protest to the recent US decision in their talks with America’s partners especially European countries and emphasize on the necessity to stand against such a decision.

5- The issue of Palestine should once again be placed top on the agenda of the Muslim world. With the defeat of Daesh [ISIS] in Iraq and Syria and the necessity of continuing the fight against other terrorist groups, we should not forget the dangers of the Zionist regime including its nuclear warheads which is a threat to the whole world.

6- The United Nations and particularly the Security Council and its General Assembly can and should play a key role under such circumstances to express their opposition to the recent US decision. It is necessary that diplomatic missions of Muslim states in the United Nations actively participate in the discussions.

7- The movements of the Zionist regime should be constantly monitored and the OIC should hold sessions wherever appropriate to take necessary decisions at the ministerial or heads of state level.

In conclusion, the Islamic Republic of Iran stands ready to cooperate with each one of the Muslim countries to defend the holy Quds without any reservation or pre-condition.

Thank you.

US Congress Takes No Action on Iran Bans as Deadlines Passes

US House of Congress

On October 13, Trump refused to certify that the Islamic Republic was complying with the agreement, officially called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), under a domestic US law and directed his administration “to work closely with Congress and our allies to address the deal’s many serious flaws.”

The US Congress was given until December 12 to decide whether to slap economic sanctions on Tehran anew.

On Tuesday, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders told a press briefing that the Trump administration “continues to make encouraging progress with Congress to fix the US–Iran deal and address long-term proliferation issues.”

“There was actually no deadline to act by this week as the administration did not ask that Congress to introduce legislation to re-impose JCPOA-related sanctions,” she added.

Micah Johnson, a spokesman for Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker, told ABC News on Monday that “productive discussions” were underway “about the appropriate path forward.”

However, the Congress has so far announced no plans to introduce a resolution to re-impose sanctions. Congressional aides said on Tuesday that the American lawmakers would let the deadline pass without action, Reuters reported.

By doing that, Congress passed the ball back to Trump, who must decide in mid-January if he wants to continue to waive sanctions on Iran.

Trump’s failure to do so would blow apart the deal, a course opposed by European allies, Russia and China, the other parties to the accord.

Eight reports by the International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN nuclear watchdog, have so far confirmed Iran’s full commitment to its side of the bargain.

Trump, however, has defied the IAEA reports and warned that he might ultimately “terminate” the Iran deal.

A new poll conducted by the Washington-based Brookings Institution, showed that 70 percent of Americans agree that the JCPOA is beneficial for US interests, while 26 percent disagree.

The JCPOA was reached between Iran and the P5+1 countries — namely the US, Russia, China, France, Britain, and Germany — in July 2015 and took effect in January 2016.

Under the accord, Iran undertook to apply certain limits to its nuclear program in exchange for the termination of all nuclear-related sanctions against Tehran.

Other parties to the deal, along with the entire international community, have voiced firm support for the JCPOA, warning Washington against attempts at undermining the landmark deal.

Since Trump’s refusal to certify Iran’s compliance, senior European officials have been intensely lobbying Congress to decide against the re-imposition of anti-Iran bans.

“Iran Ready to Counter US’ Non-Compliance with Nuclear Deal”

Qassemi said if Washington keeps breaking its pledges, Iran has considered possible scenarios to counter the move.

In a Farsi interview with the IRIB News Agency, the Iranian spokesman described the process of reviewing the nuclear deal by the US Congress a domestic issue, saying, “What matters to us is the commitment of the US government to fulfilling its obligations on time.”

Washington must stop breaking its pledges, Qassemi added.

“We are following up this issue and what matters is the fulfilment of the obligations of the US. What the Islamic Republic of Iran, the European Union and other countries around the world, and in particular other parties to the nuclear deal, expect the US to do is to meet its commitments under the nuclear accord.”

Qassemi went on to say that this issue is being reviewed by the supervising board monitoring implementation of Iran nuclear deal, and the necessary plans and scenarios have been considered, which will be openly presented at the appropriate time to take steps in case of any misconduct by the US.

His remarks came as the 10th meeting of Iran nuclear deal joint commission is scheduled to be held in Austria’s capital, Vienna, on Wednesday.

The eighth and ninth meetings of the Joint Commission were held on July 21 and September 20, respectively.

The ninth meeting was held at the ministerial level in the US city of New York.

Under the terms of the 2015 nuclear agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the commission is responsible for overseeing the implementation of the nuclear deal.

Turkey President Calls Israel “State of Terror, Occupation”

Leaders of the Muslim world, including Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, are attending the OIC summit in Istanbul, looking to rally for a coordinated response to the US move on Jerusalem al-Quds.

“Israel is a state of occupation. Besides this, Israel is a state of terror,” Erdogan told leaders from the OIC gathered for an emergency meeting in Istanbul, according to media reports.

The Turkish president urged the world to recognise occupied East Jerusalem as the “capital of Palestine” in response to the recognition of the city by US President Donald Trump as Israel’s capital.

“I am inviting the countries who value international law and fairness to recognise occupied Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine,” Erdogan said, adding that Muslim countries would “never give up” on this demand.

‘Flagrant Violation of International Law’

Turkey President Calls Israel “State of Terror, Occupation”Palestinian President Mahmood Abbas in his address called the decision of US President Donald Trump a ‘flagrant violation of international law’.

According to the Palestinian President, the decision of Trump could be used by extremists to ‘turn a political struggle into a religious one.”

Abbas warned that there could be “no peace or stability” in the Middle East until Jerusalem al-Quds is recognised as the capital of a Palestinian state.

No Reason for US Presence in Mideast: Iran Leader’s Aide

Ali-Akbar Velayti, an international advisor to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, says the United States’ key cronies to trigger tension in the Middle East region are gone.

“The Americans, like it or not, should leave the region, too. There is no reason for the US to be present in this region. This region belongs to its people,” said Velayati in an interview with the Persian-language Tasnim News Agency.

He said those who are supposed to be present in West Asia either must be from that region or must be invited by the legitimate governments of countries in the region.

“Iran is present in Iraq and Syria with an advisory role at the request of the governments of those countries,” he said.

He said the Americans are not invited to the region and that they are seeking domination through force and hegemony.

“The US currently seeks to reignite chaos both in Syria and Iraq, especially in Raqqa,” he said.

“Definitely, the Syrian government and people together with the resistance front will drive the Americans away from the areas they have occupied in Syria with humiliation,” Velayati noted.

The top official also touched upon US President Donald Trump’s decision to relocate the American embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem al-Quds.

“Trump’s move has sent a spark to the powder keg of sentiments and religious beliefs of the Muslim world,” said Velayati.

“No move could have been worse than what the US president did. The previous [US] president didn’t dare relocate Israel’s capital to al-Quds. Such a move needed someone whose decisions are not that wise, and Trump did it,” said Velayati.

He said it is right that Jerusalem al-Quds has been desecrated, and that the Americans want to relocate their embassy to that city, but they should know that, from now on, Muslims, especially Palestinians and their supporters, will not allow Zionists and their American backers to get away with it.
