Tabriz in Photos: Forgotten Art of Building Sash Windows

A sash window or hung sash window is made of one or more movable panels or sashes that form a frame to hold panes of coloured glass, which are often separated from other panels by glazing bars.

The city of Tabriz is famous for making such windows. Although any window with this style of glazing is technically a sash, the term is used almost exclusively to refer to windows where the glazed panels are opened by sliding vertically, or horizontally. Unfortunately, these windows, known in Iran as Orosi, are currently less used in the interior and exterior architecture of the buildings.

Here are IRNA’s photos of Orosi art in Tabriz:

The top story in all Iranian newspapers today was the extraordinary summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Istanbul, Turkey, during which Muslim countries issued a statement on the need to support Palestine. The Muslim states called on the world to recognize East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine.

Several papers particularly covered the remarks made by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani during the OIC summit about the need to support Palestine in the wake of the US-Israeli plots.

Also a top story was the 10th meeting of the JCPOA Joint Commission in Vienna and the claims by EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini about the Iran nuclear deal’s preamble, which was strongly dismissed by Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araqchi.

Iran to Give Crushing Response to Any US Aggression: Larijani

“The enemies should be aware that they cannot press ahead with their projects even if they collude with tens of other countries against Iran because the Muslim nation of Iran will not remain silent over the enemies’ aggressions,” Larijani said on Thursday.

According to a Farsi report by the Mehr News Agency, he referred to the latest provocative decision of US President Donald Trump to recognize Jerusalem al-Quds as Israel’s capital ‘impudent’ and said the US and the UK should know that they will not survive if they continue to occupy further lands in the Islamic world.

The parliament speaker said terrorist groups are the fruits of occupying and arrogant states’ policies and added the Lebanese are entitled to resist Israel if the Zionist regime is seeking to occupy a large swath of Beirut.

Addressing a seminar on Mirza Koochak Khan, an early twentieth-century Iranian revolutionary, in Tehran, Larijani praised the figure’s anti-hegemony thoughts and said the revolutionary icon’s ideology is still alive among Iranians.

He stressed the revolutionary thought of Mirza Khoochak Khan are still alive in Iran and warned the enemies against hatching up new plots against Iran.

Larijani stressed internal division was the key reason behind the failure of the Persian Constitutional Revolution over 100 years ago.

He called Koochak Khan a patriot and said the revolutionary icon’s reliance on the Islamic values was the main cause of his success.

“Though Khoochak Khan’s movement came to an end, his patriotism will remain alive in the minds of all Iranians forever,” he concluded.

Vardij, Varish: Touristy Villages near Iranian Capital

The two villages are among the most important tourist attractions of Tehran Province. There are about 450 households in Vardij and Varish. The area is mountainous and the gradual erosion of the rocks by wind has created some stone giants that the local people call stone ghosts. The stones look like giant human heads.

Here you can see photos of these two villages retrieved from IRNA:

Qatar Discloses Documents on Saudi-Israeli Secret Cooperation

The pro-government Qatari Al-Sharq newspaper has released documents about the Saudi Foreign Ministry’s covert cooperation with the Israeli regime back in 1966.

The documents show the Al Saud rulers were hand in gloves with Tel Aviv even 51 years ago to disintegrate Syria, occupy Egypt’s Sinai Desert and secure domination over Gaza as well as the West Bank, writes the Persian-language Kayhan newspaper.

The Qatari paper has published confidential telegraphs sent by the Saudi Foreign Ministry, shedding light on new dimensions of the plot hatched by the Saudi Wahhabi government against Islamic and Arab nations and countries, especially the Palestinian nation.

According to the daily, Riyadh explicitly asked the Israeli regime on December 27, 1966 to occupy the Sinai Desert. While trying to reinforce the pillars of the Tel Aviv regime, Riyadh also proposed an attack be launched against Syria and part of the country be disintegrated.

Based on the documents, Saudi Arabia also called on the Israeli regime to bring Gaza and the West Bank under its control to impede any movements by Palestinians or efforts by any Arab country to liberate Palestine. By this move, Riyadh actually sought to eliminate Palestinian refugees’ right to return to their homeland.

The papers also show that the Israeli regime had planned carefully to normalize relations with Saudi Arabia, that Mossad had provided the Saudi intelligence apparatus with confidential information, and that the assistance has considerably increased since 2012.

No wonder Riyadh has opted to provoke Tel Aviv in order to deal a blow to Iran and the Lebanese Hezbollah movement. Saudi Arabia is also seeking to establish relations with Israel. Anwar Eshki, the director of the Middle East Centre for Strategic and Legal Studies, which has turned into a forum for Saudi Arabia to normalize their relations with Tel Aviv, says Riyadh wants to laud Israel.

On the same note, the Israeli Haaretz newspaper expounded in an article on April 15, 2012 on a meeting between the then Saudi defence minister and his American counterpart Leon Edward Panetta, where they discussed Iran and the unrest at the base of the US Fifth Naval Fleet. According to the article, there are links between Saudi Arabia and Israel, Iran is their common enemy and Washington supports both of them.

The documents also unmask the different dimensions of an agreement between Saudi Arabia and Israel known as the deal of the century. The papers show that Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, reached some agreement in that regard during his trip to Saudi Arabia before Mahmoud Abbas travelled to Riyadh and expressed his opposition to Kushner’s proposal. However, the deal of the century had been done, and Trump himself revealed it after Riyadh showed reluctance to announce it. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin had acknowledged earlier that Israel’s relations with some Arab countries had reached an unprecedented level.

Iran Keen to Enhance Mutual Cooperation with Turkey

In a Wednesday meeting with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Istanbul, Rouhani said Tehran welcomes the involvement of Turkish investors in Iran’s oil, gas, and transportation projects.

During the meeting, which was held on the sidelines of the extraordinary summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Rouhani also said that the agreement to use local currencies in bilateral trade must be implemented as soon as possible.

Talking about the recent decision by the President of the United States about Jerusalem al-Quds, Rouhani said the move angered all Muslims and freedom-seekers in the world.

“Fortunately, the Muslim World showed solidarity with Palestinians to defend the rights of people in the holy land of Palestine and stood up against this conspiracy.”

Elsewhere in his statements, Rouhani noted that the cooperation between the two countries must continue to promote security and stability in Syria

The regional countries, especially Iran and Turkey, must have long-term cooperation in fight against terrorism given their common vision regarding fight against terrorism in the region, he added.

In turn, Erdogan referred to the high level of participation of heads of OIC member states in the meeting, and expressed the hope that the unity among Muslims would lead to taking major steps in securing the rights of the Palestinian people.

Erdogan also highlighted the need for development of Tehran-Ankara ties saying that cooperation between the two countries must be promoted in all fields.

He concluded that Turkey and Iran must root out terrorism in the region with more cooperation.

Iranian Journalist Sentenced to Make Educational Documentary!

A court in the city of Nehbnandan in South Khorasan province, eastern Iran, has sentenced a reporter to make a 20-minute documentary on car crashes in Iran instead of paying a cash fine worth $125 to the government.

The reporter was found guilty by the court for violating traffic regulations which led to a major crash in Nehbandan leaving a motor cyclist wounded, a Farsi report by the Fars News Agency said on Wednesday.

The judge Mohammad Hassan Mokhtari said the decision to issue such a verdict was made given the good record and professional background of the offender.

“He has to put together a documentary within the next six months with the aim of promoting the culture of observing and respecting traffic regulations in our region,” he said.

Mokhtari went on to say the documentary needs to be prepared and handed in to the court as well as the provincial centre of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) within the deadline.

“The Judiciary has allowed judges to issue special verdicts with the aim of promoting public awareness and local cultures,” he added.

This is not the first time that Iranian judges issue unusual verdict for the offenders.

Back in September, a court in Kermanshah province offered alternative sentences for prisoners who take part in cleaning operations of historic monuments.

In February, a judge in southern Iran sentenced a teenager charged with carrying illicit drugs to learn Islamic rules instead of going to jail.

Also in January, a man who had been convicted of poaching, was sentenced to receiving environment training instead of imprisonment in Golestan Province.

Iran Rejects Mogherini’s Claims on Nuclear Deal Text

Abbas Araqchi

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi dismissed the remarks made by Mogherini about the JCPOA as mere verbosities, saying the full text of the deal is clear.

He also noted that it is not acceptable that anyone tries to offer one’s own interpretation of a sentence.

Speaking on the sidelines of the meeting of the Joint Commission of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action in Vienna on Wednesday, and in reaction to what Mogherini called disclosing a secret on Iran deal, Araqchi told reporters that there is a sentence in the JCPOA that says “the full implementation of the nuclear deal can contribute to regional and global peace and security.”

He went on to say that “the JCPOA has not been fully implemented yet, and it will take place after ten years, it means when all the sanctions have been completely removed. If they could prove that the deal has been a successful example of holding negotiations, then they can claim it has contributed to global peace.”

The Iranian senior diplomat also added that “of course, now we can say the deal has been able to resolve an issue to contribute to peace in a region which is full of tensions.”

Araqchi further stressed that these are verbosities made by some parties. He said “the US President Trump also maneuvered (to have the issue to their advantage) as well. However, the full text of the JCPOA is clear, and it has nothing to do with regional and global issues.”

In her closing statement on Iran nuclear deal during the plenary session of the European Parliament on Tuesday, Federica Mogherini claimed that in the preamble of the (nuclear) agreement (with Iran) there is a reference, half of a sentence, that says this agreement could open the way and could put the basis for different kind of more constructive engagement in the region.

“That sentence – here I may disclose a secret – was introduced on Iran’s request. Because the Iranian leadership at the time which is the same that has been reconfirmed today intended to use the agreement as a way to ask their own population, their own public opinion a mandate to engage with the rest of the world in a political battle, which inside Iran we know very well has happened, and is continuing to happen. And some of you refer to the fact that undermining the full implementation of the nuclear deal also weakens those in Iran political scene that are trying to commit in their own way, which is not ours, towards opening and an engagement with the rest of the world. Weakening or putting into question the JCPOA is a way to strengthen the hardliners in the political scene in Iran. Is it convenient for us? Not for us for sure,” said the EU’s High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

Iran FM Calls for “Collective” Efforts to End Yemen Plight

“Ending the nightmare that is the war in Yemen is our collective responsibility,” Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said in a tweet on Wednesday.

“We welcome the growing recognition that there is no military solution,” he went on to say.

He also stressed that the Islamic Republic is “ready to contribute to any effort towards an immediate ceasefire, humanitarian assistance and intra-Yemeni dialogue.”

Zarif had earlier urged the UN to consider and implement a four-point plan he proposed on 17 April 2015 right after the Saudi-led coalition initiated war on Yemen. He believes the same plan, which includes the following, remains to be applicable and indeed imperative in order to end this nightmare:

  1. Ceasefire and immediate end to all military operations;
  2. Unimpeded urgent humanitarian and medical assistance to the people of Yemen;
  3. Resumption of Yemeni-led and Yemeni-owned national dialogue, with the participation of the representatives of all political parties and social groups;

4. Establishment of an inclusive national unity government.
