Europe Going to Extremes in Appeasing Trump: Iran FM

Iran FM

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Etemad daily newspaper, Zarif warned that Tehran will not be indifferent to the joint moves by the European Union and the US.

What follows are highlights of Zarif’s Farsi interview with Sara Ma’soumi, published by E’temad daily on Monday:

UK-Drafted Anti-Iran Resolution; Insult to Collective Wisdom

The European countries have gone to extremes to keep the US in the nuclear deal, and this will ultimately strike a blow to the EU itself. Naturally, Europeans have their own choices in this regard, but they must be aware that the Islamic Republic will not be indifferent to these movements. What happened in proposing a resolution on Yemen was in fact an insult to the collective wisdom of the world, which resulted in a series of countries officially drafting a resolution to defend the aggressor. Of course, Europeans have made such mistakes in the past as well, and we have not forgotten their move regarding Iraq (the imposed Iraqi war on Iran). At that time, members of the UN Security Council for eight years ignored Iraq’s use of chemical weapons against Iran, and instead condemned Tehran by adopting several resolutions. Today, they are repeating the same mistake and will surely regret it.

UNSC’s Face Saved by Russia

The UN Security Council should be thankful to Russia, which prevented the Council from losing its prestige. While we appreciate Russia’s move, we feel that the Russian Federation, as a permanent member of the Security Council, has, with its veto, prevented the adoption of a resolution that could be recognized as a resolution to defend the aggressor in the years to come.

Europe Going to Extremes in Appeasing Trump: Iran FM

EU, US Not in Position to Set Conditions for Iran

Certainly, any action to please the party that has so far violated the nuclear deal for many times is useless. Currently, two groups have been violating the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action; the US and the EU. The US has violated the deal due to the policies of Washington and Europeans have done the same due to the US policies. Europeans, in some cases, failed to meet their commitments, particularly in the area of banking relations, because of the US policies. Therefore, these two parties (the EU and the United States) are not in a position to set conditions for a country that has fully abided by its agreements under the JCPOA. Therefore, taking any measure in this regard is very dangerous, and it is natural that Iran will respond appropriately. Our impression is that for the time being, Trump has chanted some political slogans that none of them could become operational. In many cases, Europeans do not know what the meanings of the slogans of the US president are, and maybe in some of these cases, the Americans themselves do not know what the meaning of these slogans are. Some of these words are just slogans, like expressing concerns about the regional role of Iran. The county, which is at the forefront of the fight against terrorism in the region, and all its decisions in the region have been right despite all the wrong choices of the opposing sides. There is no cost in directing criticism at Iran’s missile program, but when they look at the list of arms purchased in the region, they see that Saudi Arabia has purchased $67 billion in arms and the members of Persian Gulf Cooperation Council have bought a total of $116 billion in the past year. These arms are sold to the states by the Europeans and the United States. So when they put the slogans aside and enter the operational stage, they get confused and do not know what to do.

EU Must Play More Constructive Role in Region

Our negotiations with the European Union began in the 1990s with “Critical Talks” and in the years later were renamed to “Comprehensive Talks”. This process stopped for a while and then turned into “High-level Talks”. In all of these talks, we discussed all international issues, including regional ones, human rights issues, global disarmament, and almost all issues of the day. Dialogue between Iran and the EU has always been in process and the Islamic Republic believes in good faith that the EU must play a more constructive role in the region. However, if Europeans want to present this process with another title in the world, then we will decide on whether these dialogues are worth pursuing.

Yemen Resolution Success Depends on EU’s Positive Cooperation

If the EU wants to play a positive role in ending the Yemen crisis, Iran can help the bloc not to repeat its previous mistakes. Europe should not be the supplier and provider of weapons for the slaughter of Yemeni people, and at the same time must facilitate access to humanitarian aid for Yemenis. Currently, one million Yemeni people are suffering from hunger and many people in the country suffer from famine and starvation. In this context, if the EU wants to play a positive role, the Islamic Republic can help. A few days after the start of the Yemen crisis, the Islamic Republic of Iran proposed its four-point plan to end the crisis and announced it repeatedly to Europeans. The EU can also play a practical role if it wants to, but if it aims to begin a propaganda game to satisfy the US, Iran has no interest in such games.

Iran, Russia Discuss Joint Cultural Cooperation in Moscow

The meeting was held within the framework of the 14th Iran-Russia Joint Economic and Trade Cooperation Commission.

The committee has been formed to develop cultural relations in various fields, said IRIB News Agency in a Farsi report.

The opening ceremony was held with the presence of the Iranian delegation headed by Abbas Khameh-Yar, the Deputy Head of the Islamic Culture and Relations Organization (ICRO), and the Deputy Minister of Culture of Russian Federation.

Determining 2020 as the year of bilateral ties in the fields of culture and tourism, holding the Eurasian Cultural Dialogue, the Iranian Cultural Week in Russia in 2018, formation of a union of Iranian and Russian publishers, and the development of cultural cooperation between the cities and provinces of Iran and Russia were discussed by the two sides.

At the end of the meeting, a memorandum of understanding was signed between Iran’s Rudaki Foundation and the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory. The chairmen of the cultural committees of both countries also signed an MoU on cultural cooperation between Tehran and Moscow.

Iran’s Minister of Economy and Finance Masoud Karbasian and a huge business delegation are in Moscow on an official visit for talks on mutual economic cooperation.

The Iranian minister is heading a 90-strong delegation at the 14th Iran-Russia Joint Economic and Trade Cooperation Commission.

Local Games Festival Held in Iran’s Bushehr Province

Rituals related to harvesting, local wears, and the supplications for rain were among the interesting parts of the festival.

However, one of the most fascinating events was the traditional “Wedding of Bushehr”. In this ceremony, the bride and groom’s families circle around the newly-weds in local clothes and carry the dowry of the bride and the wedding tableware while the local music and dance are being performed.

Then it is time for “Beard-shaving Ceremony” in which the families of bride and groom turn around a seat on which the groom is seated. They start giving him gifts of money and the rest of the guests do the same as well. The bridegroom, who has a green piece of cloth tied underneath his neck, collects the money and then according to the customs, this money is handed over to the barber.

After having a haircut and beard shaving, he is carried on the shoulders of a person who turns around and expresses joy.

“Trump’s Strategy of Gaining Concessions to Grip All Countries”

sabah zanganeh

Sabah Zanganeh, a senior political commentator and Iran’s former ambassador to the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), says the US and Europe disregard the efforts made by Iran to ensure the security of the region and the world. Iran, for its part, has not demanded anything from Europe in return for the human and financial costs that it has paid on the path, which has been criticized by many of the Iranian elite.

He made the remarks in an interview with Radio Monte Carlo where he weighed in on French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian’s Monday trip to Tehran.

In the interview, the analyst touched upon the history of cultural, scientific, political and economic relations between Iran and France, and added Le Drian’s visit to Iran is important and necessary to give French officials a clear picture of the realities in Iran.

The commentator also stressed the need for continued and closer cooperation in economic, industrial, political, security and nuclear arenas.

He further said France should reinforce its independent role and not give in to US President Donald Trump’s chantage.

He said Trump’s policy of gaining concessions will spill over to all countries, especially Europe.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Zanganeh referred to Iran’s defence policies and the necessity of safeguarding and reinforcing national security.

“Whenever the US and Israeli threats are gone, and regional security arrangements are discussed, in such a way that Iran’s security is ensured, then the issue of ‘the tool’ can be discussed, too,” he noted.

He also took issue with those who accuse Iran of fuelling insecurity in the region,

“Instability began when the US invaded Iraq, and then intensified as US cronies in the region equipped and sent terrorist groups. However, Iran, suffering from the consequences and negative effects of those actions, tried to counter insecurity and instability and contribute to boosting stability in the region,” he said.

Iran’s Leader, President Plant Saplings on Arbour Day

Iran’s Leader, President Plant Saplings on Arbour DayIn a move to mark the National Week of Natural Resources and Arbour Day, Ayatollah Khamenei planted two fruit saplings on Tuesday morning. After planting the saplings, the Leader called the tree planting tradition in Iran an auspicious event.

During the ceremony Ayatollah Khamenei called on the country’s officials to prevent the loss of trees in the cities.

“There are gardens in capital Tehran that must be prevented from being plundered because this strikes a severe blow to [human] life and urban comfort,” underlined the Leader.

He further mentioned that the implementation of this policy can be one of the factors preventing the floods and dust.

Meanwhile, President Rouhani also planted a sapling, calling on all Iranians to participate in planting trees.

In a ceremony to mark the day, he said the move is very important for natural and social health of the society.

“Today, we need a healthy environment for the society’s health, and it largely depends on the planting of saplings and preservation of forests,” added Rouhani.

He further noted that “unfortunately, millions of metres of forests have been destroyed in the previous years.”

Rouhani also called on people to protect the environment during Nowruz holidays, especially on their trips.

In this ceremony, a 1200-hectre green belt around Tehran was officially launched.

Iran Urges EU to Compel US to Abide by Nuclear Deal

Zarif made the remark on his official twitter account late on Monday, following a meeting with France’s Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian.

“In meeting today, told France FM: EU should compel US to abide by JCPOA rather than trying to appease it by repeating its extraneous demands. To defend the nuclear agreement, mere words are not sufficient. Especially since the US is an obstacle to EU’s own adherence to JCPOA,” he said.

Iran and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council – the US, France, Britain, Russia and China – plus Germany signed the nuclear agreement on July 14, 2015 and started implementing it on January 16, 2016.

Under the JCPOA, Iran undertook to put limits on its nuclear program in exchange for the removal of nuclear-related sanctions imposed against Tehran.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly described the JCPOA, which was negotiated under his predecessor, Barack Obama, as “the worst and most one-sided transaction Washington has ever entered into,” a characterization he often used during his presidential campaign, and threatened to tear it up.

Trump has threatened to pull out of the JCPOA unless Congress and America’s European allies help “fix” it with a follow-up agreement within a 120-day deadline.

“US & Europeans should stop pouring hundreds of billions of dollars of weapons into our region instead of questioning Iran’s missiles. Not restricted by UNSC, but necessary to deter repeat of our people’s suffering when Saddam—with western support—showered us with missiles,” he added.

“Louvre in Tehran, Chance to Promote Friendship among Iran, France”

In an address to the opening of Louvre Museum’s exhibition in Tehran on Monday, Moonesan cited the exhibition as one of the greatest joint cultural events by Iran and France.

As the head of Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts, and Tourism Organization (ICHTO), Moonesan also referred to the coincidence of the exhibition and the Iranian New Year and said the “Louvre in Tehran” is the beginning of a new year for Iran’s cultural heritage.

He further noted that “cultural relations between Iran and France have created a new ground for expanding ties.”

“Louvre in Tehran, Chance to Promote Friendship among Iran, France”The Iranian official described the exhibition as a representation of the “geography of love and culture” and said the items on display in Tehran represent the precious relations between the Iranian and French nations.

He pointed to the exhibition of Iran’s historic, civilizational and cultural items across the world over the past two centuries, adding that the first exhibition of Iranian items abroad was held in 1889 in France.

By holding seven exhibitions of Iranian items, France has the highest number of Iranian exhibitions compared with other countries. “This reveals the deep cultural relations between the two sides.”

He said other countries like the UK, the US, Austria, Belgium and Switzerland have already held exhibitions of Iranian items.

The ICHTO chief then expressed hope the bond of friendship between the two Iranian and French museums would strengthen the relations between the two nations ending up in a peaceful coexistence between them.

The Louvre exhibition in Tehran is the first by a major Western cultural institution. It was agreed upon during a visit to Paris by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in 2016.

In a statement, the Louvre said its international strategy was directly influenced by French diplomatic priorities. The exhibition was officially opened on Monday by French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian in a ceremony flooded by journalists and foreign diplomats.

The four-month exhibition displays some 50 works from the Louvre, including a sphinx statue and other artefacts linked to the Greek, Egyptian and Mesopotamian cultures, as well as objects from ancient Iran.

Iran’s Beauties in Photos: Talesh Cottages Covered by Snow

In the Talesh mountains, the snow is so deep for the villagers that most of them leave their wooden cottages in the winter due to the heavy snowfall and return home in late spring.

Talesh is located on the southwestern coast of the Caspian Sea. The county, covering an area of nearly 2,500 square kilometres, accounts for one-fourth of surface area of Gilan Province in northern Iran. Talesh has inland scenic areas in the Alborz mountain range, with intact natural habitats that are places for appreciating nature.

No One Allowed to Hold Talks over Iran’s Defence Capabilities: IRGC

Spokesman for the Iranian Armed Forces Brigadier General Massoud Jazayeri said that the Islamic Republic’s defence capabilities will continue without any interruption, and foreigners will not be allowed to interfere in the case.

According to a Farsi report by Fars News Agency, he made the remarks in reaction to some reports and claims by the US and some European leaders about the missile power of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

“In the current situation, as the hegemonic regimes are making threats against the Islamic Republic of Iran or conducting war crimes in the region, the task of the armed forces is to enhance defence capabilities in all fields, including missile systems.”

Jazayeri’s comments came as French Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Yves Le Drian was in Tehran to hold talks with Iranian officials over different issues. Some reports say Iran’s role in the region, the country’s missile program, and saving nuclear deal from Donald Trump threats were on the agenda.

Nuclear Deal Breakdown to Be Matter of Regret for All Parties: Rouhani

Speaking in a Monday meeting with France’s Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Yves Le Drian, Rouhani noted that the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) is a test for all negotiating parties.

“Remaining committed to the accord would prove to the world that the negotiation and diplomacy is the best way to solve problems, but the collapse of the deal means that political talks are a waste of time,” he said.

Rouhani stressed that all the negotiating parties must adhere to their commitments regarding the deal underlining that Iran will never be the first party to violate the agreement and believes that this deal is effective in developing regional and international collaborations, and also in creating stability, bringing peace, and building trust.

The Iranian president further mentioned that Iran and France share the same vision on the JCPOA and both countries believe it must be maintained.

“Fortunately, today, via the nuclear deal a suitable environment has been created for the development of mutual relations and collaborations. We must move towards achieving the common goals and interests of the two nations in this direction.”

The President also referred to the historical and friendly ties between Tehran and Paris in various fields including trade, economy, industry, agriculture, culture, transportation and energy saying that the two governments are determined to establish and strengthen mutual friendly ties.

“There are no limits for the Islamic Republic of Iran to develop and boost relations and collaborations with France.”

Pointing to the necessity of mutual cooperation between Iran and France on regional stability and security, Iran’s president said, “France and the Islamic Republic of Iran have played a positive role in resolving the recent problems in Lebanon, and should collaborate in keeping peace in this country and preparing the grounds for an election that brings about political vitality and stability in the country.”

Rouhani said the security of the Persian Gulf is an issue of significance for the region. Pointing to the Yemen crisis, he added, “It is an international and humanitarian responsibility to do our best for the sake of Yemeni people who are suffering from bombardments, diseases and many [other] troubles.”

He noted that these efforts must be made towards the implementation of a ceasefire, ending the war, stopping the massacre of the Yemenis, and also sending of humanitarian aid.

Referring to Syria’s problems and the pains suffered by its people, Rouhani underscored that the Islamic Republic of Iran has been present in Syria at the request of the Syrian government to fight terrorism, but it has not been completely eradicated, and it still threatens other countries.

Rouhani further said that the fight for the complete elimination of terrorism and helping the Syrians is a high priority for Iran and France in the region.

“There is no way but to strengthen the central government in Damascus to resolve the Syrian crisis.”

For his part, Le Drian emphasized his country’s respect for the JCPOA and Paris’s interest in maintaining the nuclear deal.

“The IAEA reports indicate that the Islamic Republic is fully committed to its obligations, and France will do its utmost to preserve the nuclear agreement.”

Le Drian also pointed out that Tehran-Paris economic and trade ties have increased dramatically within the past two years right after the nuclear agreement.

“We are interested in the development and boosting of relations in all fields with the Islamic Republic of Iran. To this end, France has considered some ways to facilitate the expansion of mutual economic cooperation in order to boost the trade dynamism established between the two countries,” added Le Drian.

He further mentioned that the EU considers the nuclear deal with Iran as a fundamental document that promotes regional stability and security.

“Iran and France can work together to promote regional stability and security, in particular to prevent humanitarian catastrophes in the region and to solve regional crises.”

“We are willing to cooperate and consult with Iran as a friendly country on all topics of interest,” concluded France’s Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs.

Earlier in the day Le Drian held separate meetings with the Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), Ali Shamkhani, and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.
