US Sanctions on Iran Aimed at Protecting Riyadh: FM Zarif

“To deflect from headlines on Saudi brutality in Istanbul and across Yemen, US Treasury—while in Saudi Arabia, no less—sanctions Iran for “supporting” anti-Iran Taliban,” Zarif said in a post on his official Twitter account on Wednesday.

“Conveniently omitting that US is negotiating with the very same Taliban now& its clients have long backed it,” he added.

The US Treasury Department on Tuesday imposed sanctions against eight individuals, including two allegedly linked to the Quds Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) and accused Iran of providing material and financial support to the militants and supporting terrorism.

The US allegations that Iran supports the Taliban come as Tehran has on numerous occasions denied training or backing the militant group.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has been standing for nearly four decades alongside the friendly and brotherly government and people of Afghanistan to defend their sovereignty and independence, and the statements made to satisfy outsiders and invaders have no congruity with these friendly relations,” Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said earlier this year.

Khashoggi, a Saudi citizen and newspaper columnist at The Washington Post, went missing on October 2 when he entered the consulate in Istanbul. After weeks of denying knowledge of his fate, Saudi officials said the prominent journalist was killed in what they describe as a “rogue operation”.

After denying any involvement in the disappearance of Khashoggi for two weeks, Saudi Arabia on Saturday morning said he had died in a fistfight at the consulate. An hour later, another Saudi official attributed the death to a chokehold.

The death of Khashoggi has snowballed into a massive crisis for the kingdom, forcing the 82-year-old monarch, King Salman, to personally get involved.

Jailed Saudi Princes Urge Int’l Probe into Kingdom’s Terrors

Prince Sultan bin Turki, pictured centre

According to a report by Al-Quds Al-Arabi newspaper, the princes called on the world community to put the cases high on agenda along with the case of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s murder in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

In separate letters to Saudi King Salman, the princes demanded him to launch immediate measures to safeguard the country against what they describe as a plight putting the country at odds with its western allies.

They also called for clarification on the fate of disappeared princes including Prince Abdul Aziz bin Fahd, son of the former King of Saudi Arabia from 1982 to 2005.

Several sources said the Saudi princes sent the letters to King Salman through Khaled Faisal, a senior advisor to the king, asking him to take immediate steps to prevent dangerous consequences of the murder of Khashoggi. They also warned that the case could negatively affect the future of Saudi Arabia.

To this end, a Saudi prince has called on King Salman to handle the chaos in the royal families before it gets too late. He has also urged an extraordinary meeting of Saudi Arabia’s Royal Families Council which is an advisory council without a binding mandate.

The council consists of three generations of royal families in Saudi Arabia including the sons of Abdulaziz, the founder of Saudi Arabia, as well as their sons and grandsons. It convenes regularly to discuss the future of the royal families. This comes as Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has sidelined the council over the past years and downgraded it to a formal institute without any executive power.

Another Saudi prince called on the international community to probe into arrests of Saudi princes as well as social activists in Saudi Arabia for expressing their political and social views.

A number of Saudi princes are under house arrest and the fate of some of them seems uncertain. At present some leading princes including Mohammed bin Nayef, Waleed bin Talal and Nutaib bin Abdullah are under house arrest.

Bin Talal decided to travel abroad several times but was banned by security police. It is believed that the Saudi government has been banned from issuing passport for them. Meanwhile, bin Talal’s brother Khaled was among the disappeared princes until several months ago when it became clear that he is held in jail. Reports say, Khaled has been tortured severely and if he is still alive it is because of his connections with leading Lebanese and Moroccan families.

Bin Fahd’s fate is also uncertain and some reports say he is under house arrest but some others maintain that he has died under torture.

All royal families have managed to make phone contact with their members jailed in Ritz Carlton hotel except for the Fahd family.

Saudi Arabia has come under huge international pressure over its changing accounts of the death of Khashoggi in Istanbul. Even US President Donald Trump has criticized Saudi’s explanation for the death as “all over the place.” He has, however, praised Bin Salman calling him a strong person with very good control. This comes as European countries as well as a number of regional allies have cast doubt on the Saudi narrative of the case calling for a solid probe into the death.

Marble of Iran’s Kurdistan Registered by WIPO

Although Kurdistan marble had already been renowned globally, its international registration has opened a new chapter for the product at the WIPO.

According to officials, the product being registered by the WIPO will also encourage foreign investment in Iran to launch marble factories.

Until a few years ago, marble workshops were up and running in the province. One could hear the sound of marble being cut. Giant cranes would move large pieces of marble at workshops and they were finally loaded onto lorries to be taken away.

In those days when the construction of buildings was all the rage and when ceramics and other artificial stone products had not yet been so popular, marble was a key construction material and the façade of most chic and modern buildings was decorated with it.

Marble was a luxury commodity and only the well-to-do could afford decorative handicrafts made of marble.

Although stonemasons’ business is slowing down these days, there is demand for marble, even in its raw form, on international markets, namely Italy and China.

IRGC Sells Its Shares in Iran’s Largest Telecom Firm

In a statement, IRGC’s Cooperative Foundation said it has sold its share in Tose’e Etemad Mobin, a consortium that owns Telecommunication Company of Iran and its subsidiary, Mobile Telecommunication Company of Iran.

“In line with guidelines of the chief of staff of armed forces, the IRGC’s Cooperative Foundation sold its share and left Tose’e Etemad Mobin,” statement said, as quoted by Sepah News.

The move came after calls by Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and President Hassan Rouhani that Iran’s Armed Forces must withdraw from the Iranian economy.

Last January, Iran’s Defence Minister Brigadier General Amir Hatami said Ayatollah Khamenei had tasked the armed forces’ chief of staff to push military forces, including IRGC and Army, to go out of the economy.

However, General Hatami said the armed forces will continue to engage in big national construction projects across the country, upon the government’s invitation.

“This is our principled orientation and we will do our best, but our success depends on the conditions of the market and the possibility of transferring the companies,” he said.

The engagement of IRGC and Iran’s Army in Iran’s economy started in the early 1990s, when the then-government encouraged the IRGC to get involved in construction of the country after the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war.

However, in recent years, the government has come under pressure in the wake of criticism that armed forces have made it impossible for private sector firms to enter certain parts of the economy.

Iran Congratulates Afghanistan on Holding Parliamentary Elections

In a Wednesday statement, Qassemi hailed Afghanistan for holding its parliamentary elections after a three-year hiatus, saying that the votes became possible with the efforts of the Afghan people and government.

“Tehran considers it as a positive move towards establishment of democracy and achievement of security, stability and development in the neighbouring country,” he noted.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran hopes that, with the formation of the new parliament, the process of change would resolve problems there and lead to lasting peace, security, and prosperity for the Afghan nation,” Qassemi noted.

Millions of Afghan people made their ways on Saturday and Sunday to polling stations to cast ballots despite a number of deadly attacks which were carried out during the voting process.

In a suicide attack in Kabul, at least 10 civilians and five Afghan police personnel were killed when a suicide bomber blew himself up at a polling station in the city. Dozens more were wounded as a result of the bombing. The Taliban insurgents had threatened to attack any Afghan who goes to the ballot boxes.

According to the Independent Election Commission of Afghanistan (IEC) almost four million Afghans in 32 provinces voted during the two days of elections in the country.

More than 2,500 candidates, including 400 women, were running for 249 seats in the Lower House of Parliament.

Iran’s Shahin Izadyar; A New Rival for Michael Phelps

Izadyar played a great role in the good position of the Iranian team in Jakarta by acquiring six gold and one silver medals. Not only was he the champion of a country, he became the champion of Asia during the final days of the games, in a way that the swimming tickets were sold out very quickly as all sport lovers wanted to see this Asian Phelps.

Michael Phelps is an American retired swimmer and the most successful and most decorated Olympian of all time with a total of 28 medals. Phelps also holds the all-time records for Olympic gold medals. He won eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Phelps had already tied the record of eight medals of any colour at a single competition by winning six gold and two bronze medals.

Now Shahin Izadyar, with an unprecedented success in the 2018 Asian Para Games, has managed to remind everyone of the legendary Phelps.

Izadyar won a medal every time he dived into the water to show his ability. During the games, he was a professional athlete. With a smile, he was always ready to swim and was coming out with a gold medal. However, few people were aware of his conditions outside the venue.

Iran’s Shahin Izadyar; A New Rival for Michael PhelpsAs his trainer says, Izadyar is a very professional athlete who has plans for each moment and gets prepared based on a well-defined schedule.

“Now, we all can boast of having a hero in the country, as the Asians boast of having such a swimmer in their continent.”

“I had plans to win six gold medals before the start of the tournament. All my plans were to make the best possible thing happen,” Shahin said.

“Of course, with respect to all football fans, my beloved team is FC Persepolis,” he noted, adding that his motivation for earning 6 gold medals was that the number is sacred to Persepolis fans.

“In general, I wanted to make Iranian people happy, and I thank God for achieving the best results. It’s really hard for an athlete at this level to win six golds. Thank God, I was chosen as the best Para Asian athlete. I want to thank all those who worked hard for me, and I would like to thank all the correspondents and photographers who were here next to me. All this positive energy resulted in 6 gold medals,” added Izadyar.

He also humbly apologized to the Iranian nation for failing to earn a seventh gold medal, and instead winning a silver one.

The 2018 Asian Para Games was a pan-Asian multi-sport event that held from October 6 to 13 in Indonesia’s capital city of Jakarta. The event paralleled the 2018 Asian Games and was held for Asian athletes with disability. It was the first time Indonesia was hosting the games.

Iran Leader: Arba’een Processions Impossible without ‘Shrine Defenders’

Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei

The Leader made the remarks in a Monday meeting with the families of Holy Shrine Defenders – the Iranian advisers and military personnel who are helping Iraq and Syria to fight against terrorists in the war-torn states.

“In fact, it is similar to the movement of those who were able to protect the holy shrine of the third Shiite Imam by sacrificing their lives,” added Ayatollah Khamenei.

He further mentioned that this is a great thing carried out by young people. “This was for the sake of God; as we have not encouraged anyone to do it.”

“This time it was not like the Iran-Iraq war period at which we were encouraging the youths to go to war. This time, the young people were enthusiastic themselves,” he added.

Arba’een marks the fortieth day after Ashura, the day Imam Hussain (AS) was martyred in the Battle of Karbala some 14 centuries ago. Millions of pilgrims annually convene in the holy city of Karbala to commemorate the anniversary. Many pilgrims travel miles on foot to reach the Iraqi city.

Ancient Coins Seized from Smugglers in Southern Iran

The coins were seized after the law enforcement officers in the province were informed about the smuggling of these objects in the city of Behbahan.

Two individuals involved in the smuggling of these coins were arrested by the Behbahan police before finalizing a deal to sell them.

Elymais or Elamais was a semi-independent state of the 2nd century BCE to the early 3rd century CE, frequently a vassal under Parthian control, and located at the head of the Persian Gulf in the present-day region of Khuzestan.

It is said that these people were great archers and natives of Susa, which lies to the east of Elymais territory. Most of the Elymais were probably descendants of the ancient Elamites, who once had control of that area in the past.

The coins of Elymais depicted a king; it is not known whether it was a Parthian king or a local ruler, as such information has not come to light. The royal picture is generally based on Parthian coinage, usually with an anchor with a star in crescent figure. The reverse has a figure or bust of Artemis with text around it, an eagle, or often only elongated dots.

The kingdom of Elymais survived until its extinction by a Sassanid invasion in the early 3rd century CE.
