Security Official Debunks US’ Lie about New Deal with Iran

In an interview with Al Jazeera on Saturday, Keivan Khosravi denounced the recent comments from Brian Hook, the US special representative for Iran, as “lies” and an “escape forward”.

“The US sanctions amount to an inclusive war against people of Iran, and the remarks by Brian Hook are nothing but lies,” the Iranian spokesman said.

Describing Hook’s comments about the possibility of a new deal with Iran as an escape forward, Khosravi said, “Brian Hook’s comments about negotiations are (part of) propaganda (campaign), and are aimed at diverting the public opinion from Washington’s withdrawal from the JCPOA.”

His comments came after Hook told Al Jazeera  the United States is ready to lift sanctions on Iran and restore diplomatic relations if the country stops what he calls “its hostilities”.

“Sanctions against Iran are not to punish it but to ensure American national security,” he claimed.

He also told Bloomberg TV that Washington is open to dialogue with Iran even as the US enforces sanctions against Iran.

Speaking in Doha, Hook once again branded Iran as a threat to international peace and security.

In separate comments at the Doha Forum conference in Qatar on Saturday, US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said the US would end all sanctions on Iran when Tehran fulfilled necessary conditions.

US Says Ready to Lift Iran Sanctions, Restore Relations

In an exclusive interview with Qatar’s Al-Jazeera, Hook said that the United States is ready “to lift sanctions on Iran and restore diplomatic relations if it stops its hostilities.”

“Sanctions against Iran are not to punish it but to ensure American national security,” he claimed.

“Although the Iranian leader, [Ayatollah] Ali Khamenei, has chosen an economic meltdown over dialogue with us, it is possible to reach a better agreement with Tehran,” Hook added.

In May 2018, US President Donald Trump unilaterally pulled his country out of the international deal, in defiance of global criticism, and later re-imposed the sanctions that had been lifted against Tehran as part of the agreement.

In response to the move, Tehran has so far rowed back on its nuclear commitments four times in compliance with Articles 26 and 36, but stressed that its retaliatory measures will be reversible as soon as Europe finds practical ways to shield the mutual trade from the sanctions.

In his interview with Al Jazeera, Hook also pointed to the recent prison exchange between Iran and the United States, and said exchanging prisoners with Iran is a first step to release the rest of our prisoners, Sputnik quoted him as saying.

Iran and the United States swapped prisoners last Saturday.

Iranian stem cell scientist Masoud Soleimani was released after spending over a year in US detention without any formal charges and American graduate student, Xiyue Wang, detained for three years on spying charges in Iran, was freed in return.

Soleimani, 49, left Iran on sabbatical back in October last year, but was arrested upon arrival in Chicago and transferred to prison in Atlanta, Georgia, for unspecified reasons.

Prosecutors in Atlanta had accused him and two of his former students of conspiring and attempting to export vials of human growth hormone from the US to Iran without authorization, in violation of US sanctions.

Pills Placed in Sweets Aimed at Tarnishing Food Industry’s Image: Iran

Pills Placed in Sweets Aimed at Tarnishing Food Industry's Image Iran

The remarks by the country’s Food and Drug Organization spokesperson, Kianoush Jahanpour, came on Saturday after inserted drugs had been found in the products of up to 12 Iranian confectionery brands.

“It’s the standing of the whole food and confectionery industry that has been targeted as one of the country’s excelling industries,” he said.

Jahanpour added the drugs had “not undergone any changes in their color and composition, signaling that the drugs were placed in various packages after production and during distribution stages.”

No narcotics or rumored aluminum phosphide tablets have been found inserted in any of the products, the spokesperson noted.

“Most of the examined drugs have been household drugs such as acetaminophen, brufen, cetirizine, hydroxyzine, metoclopramide and even empty blister packs.”

More than a month has passed since initial media reports emerged alleging that drugs have been placed in confectionery products such as cakes, biscuits and wafers.

The drugs have so far led to the intoxication of limited number of people. No fatalities have been reported.

Sabotaged products have so far been confirmed to have been found in Iran’s eastern provinces of Kerman, Hormozgan, Sistan and Baluchistan near the Pakistani border and the western Ilam province, which borders Iraq, according to officials.

Mohammad Hossein Azizi, who is in charge of the health Ministry’s oversight of food products, said no inserted drugs have been discovered in the country’s northern provinces and that all confirmed cases happened in the south.

The total number of instances of drugs placed in the confectionery products has been “very low,” Azizi said without further elaborating on the numbers.

According to inspections, he said, no instances were reported from factory-sealed confectionery products and that all reported cases had been found in previously opened packages.

The ministry’s food oversight chief added that the act of sabotage could have been perpetrated by elements “within or outside the country”.

“Observations show that this has been a purposeful attempt to disturb public opinion and the police and security forces are following up on the matter,” Azizi said.

The mysterious emergence of inserted drugs in various Iranian confectionery products comes as Iran’s food industry is regarded as one of the country’s booming industries, enjoying exports to a wide range of countries despite US-imposed sanctions.

Iran’s sweet exports account for half of the Iranian food industry’s exports, according to reports.

The Iranian government has so far also been relatively successful in shielding the food industry from sanctions and ensuring that vital food product prices remain low and accessible for the general public.

The developments come as Washington, along with its regional allies, seeks to pressure Iran by waging a campaign of “maximum pressure” primarily by imposing a robust sanctions regime against the country following the Trump administration’s withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal last year.

Earlier this year, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that Tehran had to listen to Washington “if they want their people to eat”.

IRGC to Hold Massive Naval Drills

IRGC to Hold Massive Naval Drills

In an interview with Tasnim on Saturday, Rear Admiral Tangsiri said the massive naval war game will be launched in the near future.

He noted that the latest military achievements and equipment of the Navy will be unveiled during the exercise.

Staging war games and displaying new equipment signify the Islamic Republic’s military progress and power, the commander added.

Rear Admiral Tangsiri noted that all the ordnance in service at the IRGC Navy has been manufactured inside the country.

He further highlighted Iran’s “full intelligence dominance” over the region.

In December last year, the IRGC carried out a large-scale war game in the Persian Gulf.

In comments in November 2018, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei urged the Iranian Armed Forces to boost their military capabilities and preparedness in such a way that the enemies would not ever dare think of threaten the country.

Pointing to the plots that the enemies and rivals have hatched against the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Khamenei emphasized the necessity to step up extraordinary efforts in all areas, as in the Navy, to thwart the hostile plots and compensate for the shortcomings.

Iran Says Ready for Partnership in Five-State Transit Corridor

Iran Says Ready for Partnership in Five-State Transit Corridor

Speaking at the 13th meeting of Iran-Uzbekistan Joint Commission of Economic Cooperation, held in Tashkent on Thursday, Rahmani said Iran favours the project on a five-party transportation corridor with Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Oman, and will seriously pursue the plan.

He also noted that the presence of representative of 50 Iranian companies in the meeting and Iran’s move to hold an exclusive exhibition in Tashkent reveal the significant role of the Joint Commission in promoting trade ties between Iran and Uzbekistan.

The Iranian minister also called for efforts to implement the agreements that Iran and Uzbekistan have signed in the past to enhance cooperation in various sectors, such as business, transportation, encouraging foreign investment, customs issues and tourism industry.

Highlighting the fruitful meetings he held with Uzbekistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Elyor Ganiyev, Rahmani said the two sides have agreed to settle the problems surrounding a series of goods subject to preferential trade tariff and to resolve the problems in the transportation industry.

Iran and Uzbekistan have held constructive talks on plans to facilitate the visa process for the nationals of the two countries, the minister added, stressing the need for more reciprocal visits by business delegations of the two sides and more exclusive exhibitions.

Rahmani further unveiled plans to promote cooperation between Iran and Uzbekistan in various spheres, such as the production of pharmaceuticals and medical equipment, auto parts, construction materials, as well as oil, gas and petrochemical industries.

Highlighting Iran’s perfect position in the region that allows for the shipment of commodities from Uzbekistan, such as cotton and fertilizer, Rahmani said the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways has given good discounts to Uzbekistan.

“Iran expresses readiness to increase transit exchanges, and to facilitate and accelerate the construction of Iran-Afghanistan-Uzbekistan railroad line,” Rahmani added.

Iran, Uzbekistan Sign Several MoUs

At the conclusion of the meeting, Rahmani and Ganiyev signed the memorandum of understanding of the 13th meeting of Iran-Uzbekistan Joint Commission of Economic Cooperation.

According to Iran’s Deputy Minister of Industry, Mine and Trade Hamid Zadboom, the MoU entails closer cooperation between Tehran and Tashkent in industry, mining, trade, foreign investment, oil, gas and energy industries, customs affairs, tourism industry, and the scientific, technological, and cultural development.

The MoU also includes plans to broaden the bilateral relations in the transportation of goods, agriculture, irrigation, as well as legal affairs and documents, Zadboom noted.

“One of the major agreements made in the conference was formulation of a road map to mutual cooperation in the industry, mining, and trade, and the exchange of them (the road maps) as soon as possible,” he stated, saying the two sides have also discussed plans to strengthen cooperation in the transportation industry and to launch direct flights between Iran and Uzbekistan.

Iran Starts Extracting Healthy Drinking Water from Rain

Iran Starts Extracting Healthy Drinking Water from Rain

In Iran, there is a large amount of precipitation in the north. This amount of rain falls into the sea without any use, considering the high costs of desalination.

As a solution to the problem, the Water, Drought, Erosion, and Environment Technologies Development Headquarters of Iran’s Vice Presidency for Science and Technology has started a joint project, named “Extraction of Drinking and Distilled Water from Rain,” to make up for some of the shortcomings.

The plan can be effective in diminishing the negative impacts of water scarcity considering the serious water crisis in the country, where over one cubic metre of clear rainwater annually enters every one square metres of land in coastal areas.

With this project, large quantities of rainwater can be kept from entering the sea each year, which can only return to its original quality at a very high cost.

Today, drinking water gained from rain is undoubtedly one of the safest and best drinking water in the world if it is provided on the basis of sanitary and hygienic standards. The water is free from any heavy metals, compounds and toxins of industrial and agricultural activities.

Iran Starts Postal Drone Services

Iran Starts Postal Drone Services

In a post on his Instagram page on Thursday, Azari Jahromi said the good news that he had promised people would hear was the employment of unmanned aircraft systems to supplement mail delivery in Iran.

The new plan, dubbed “Post Plus”, would lower the mail delivery costs and reduce air pollution in the cities, the minister added.

“We allowed for the delivery of mail packages with drones, so that no place in Iran would remain inaccessible anymore. The rapid delivery of medicines to the hospitals and islands, surprising the others etc. are among the services that will be available to you from now on. At present, a few countries in the world have done this job. We can do it,” Azari Jahromi added.

He also unveiled plans to equip the Iranian Post with electric cars, electric motorcycles, and homegrown electric bicycles.

The young minister finally praised the feedback and responses he has received from people on the “surprising news” of mail delivery drones, saying he will have more surprises for people in the weeks to come, such as the launch of a new satellite, a reduction in the cost of Internet service, and the termination of value-added service (VAS).

Iran Expects New UK Gov’t to Fulfill JCPOA Commitments

Iran Expects New UK Gov’t to Fulfill JCPOA Commitments

Mousavi made the remarks in reaction to the recent general elections held in Britain, where the Conservatives led by incumbent Prime Minister Boris Johnson once again defeated the Labour Party.

“The internal affairs of other countries are not much related to us, and we don’t make any interference; after what happened in Britain, they decided to hold snap elections, where the Conservative Party finally won,” Mousavi told a press conference on Saturday in the city of Tabriz.

“We hope they will at least fulfill their commitments towards Iran; nothing more is expected from them,” he said.

“After Donald Trump was elected in the US, he left many agreements, and acted in a way that seemed like a revolution; the same applies to the UK, but it would be enough if they remain committed to their obligations,” Mousavi noted.

He finally expressed the hope that London would deliver on its commitments along with the European Union, France, Germany, Russia, and China, and take practical steps to return to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

The 2019 United Kingdom general election was held on Thursday 12 December 2019 under the provisions of the Early Parliamentary General Election Act 2019, two years after the previous general election in 2017.

The governing Conservative Party regained its majority in the House of Commons after having lost it in 2017, while the Labour Party suffered major losses that resulted in them obtaining their lowest proportion of seats since the 1935 general election.

The Conservative Party, having failed to obtain a majority in the 2017 general election, faced a prolonged parliamentary deadlock over Brexit while it governed in minority with the support of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP).

In July 2019, Boris Johnson was elected as the Conservatives’ leader and appointed as Prime Minister, after Theresa May resigned.

Johnson failed to pass a withdrawal agreement through the Commons by the end of October, and was forced to call for a snap election.

Johnson needed to obtain an overall majority in the election in order to accomplish his main goal of taking the United Kingdom out of the European Union by the end of January 2020.
