Iran’s Nuclear Industry Doing Its Utmost to Help Health Sector amid COVID-19

Iran's Nuclear Industry Doing Its Utmost to Help Health Sector amid COVID-19
Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran Ali Akbar Salehi

In his message, Vice President of Iran and chief of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali-Akbar Salehi appreciated efforts by all those working in the country’s nuclear sector.

What follows is the full text of the message marking National Nuclear Technology Day:
In these high-risk days, and amid the relentless fight by brave men and women in the health sector to allay patients’ sufferings and pain, I sympathize with families of those who lost their lives or who suffered harm during recent incidents and events.

Hereby, I take it upon myself to commemorate April 8, which marks National Nuclear Technology Day. This year, the occasion falls on the anniversary of the birth of Imam Mahdi (the twelfth Shiite Imam). I appreciate relentless and praiseworthy attempts by every single member of the country’s honourable nuclear community and industry.

I deem it necessary to announce, with pride, that the 122 new achievements over the past year, which have been the result of untiring efforts by a huge number of researchers at the AEOI, usher in a new era in the all-out development of the glorious activities of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran.

In the meantime, I briefly inform you that the ever-growing development of products and services pertinent to the nuclear medicine sector and the procurement of medications needed by medical and health sectors across the nation are underway on a large scale and at an acceptable pace. It goes without saying that under the current trying circumstances when the Islamic Iran is affected by unfair sanctions imposed by global hegemony, it is a national and moral duty to meet the needs of the country’s medical community and is of special importance to us.

Moreover, redoubled efforts are underway to advance major objectives in the nuclear fuel cycle sector, including the expansion of activities related to the exploration and extraction of raw material for the nuclear industry, expedite activities in the uranium enrichment research and development sector, and press ahead with plans to construct units 2 and 3 of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, and develop new nuclear technologies.

In addition, it is noteworthy that the renovation and completion of the Khandab (Arak) Heavy Water Reactor is underway in keeping with the provisions stipulated in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). It should be noted that those working in the nuclear industry have turned their attention to the outlook depicted by the wise Leader of the Islamic Revolution [Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei] as well as the guidelines of the respected president [Hassan Rouhani], and put on their agenda the ever-growing development of this strategic industry with a vengeance and on all fronts.

It is also noteworthy that as planned, arrangements had been made to mark National Nuclear Technology Day like previous years in a ceremony to be attended by President Hassan Rouhani and other local and foreign guests, including state and military officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Nevertheless, due to the COVID-19 outbreak, and in order to ward off potential hazards, and based on the directives and regulations set by the National Coronavirus Headquarters, we were unable to hold the ceremony, and after consulting Dr. Rouhani, it was decided that the national occasion be marked later in a ceremony at the right time and place. I hope that by God’s grace and special attention of Imam Mahdi, the time will be ripe in the shortest possible time to directly introduce our achievements and explain their details to the people.

Iran Producing 1 Million 3-layer Masks Every Day: Official

‘Iran Self-Sufficient in Producing Masks, Equipment for COVID-19 Treatment’

Speaking on the sidelines of a visit to a mask-producing factory on Tuesday, Mohammad Reza Shanehsaz said before the COVID-19 outbreak, the number of three-layer industrial masks produced in the country was 100,000 to 150,000 a day, which has now reached over one million.

With the cooperation of the industry ministry, it is expected that in the next two to three weeks, the production capacity of the three-layer masks will reach five million per day, in which case we can export masks to other countries, he added.

He also talked about the production of N95 masks, adding that before the spread of COVID-19, the daily production capacity in the country was less than 5,000, and now this figure has reached over 140,000.

The production capacity of clothing needed by medical staff, which was very limited in the past, also increased with collaboration of the industry ministry.

“In addition to the production of protective clothing fabrics in the country, the production capacity has reached 50,000, which we hope will increase and we will be able to fully meet the domestic needs.”

Next to the production of industrial masks, the production of trade union products are also followed after obtaining the necessary licenses from the General Directorate of Medical Equipment, he pointed out.

According to the official, the production capacity of sanitary items such as solutions and disinfectant gels has increased by eight times, stressing that there is no shortage of these items at pharmacies.

Iran Urges Women Leaders to Act against US Bans amid COVID-19

Massoumeh Ebtekar

What follows is the full text of her letter:

The COVID-19 pandemic is a global challenge of epic proportions. The pandemic knows no borders, ethnicity race or religion. This crisis requires a unified and concerted response among states and civil society to save lives and livelihoods. Ongoing conflicts and military actions worldwide need to cease immediately and economic sanctions should be unconditionally lifted to enable local and international actors to intervene to provide necessary medical services and equipment to help alleviate the social and economic burdens of this pandemic on families and livelihoods.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has been facing the most brutal economic sanctions in history during the past months. These sanctions have impeded not only our economic growth and capacity to deal with the social requirements of employment but have also prevented the flow of necessary pharmaceuticals and medical equipment. The COVID-19 outbreak in Iran has been compounded by the economic sanctions and terrorism against my country. Health workers and medical personnel, a large proportion of whom are women physicians, nurses and hospital staff in Iran have served relentlessly to combat this disease and sacrificed to save lives. Additionally, Iranian women have taken a leading role in protecting their families and encouraging social distancing. They have also mobilized entrepreneurs to produce medical commodities such as face masks and surgical gowns for our hospitals.

Nevertheless, the pressures of terrible sanctions are taking their toll on our people. Echoing the voice of Iranian women and families, I hereby invite you to take action and to voice your objection to the continued illegal economic sanctions against my people by the US government. Our shared humanity requires that we stand together unified and that we resist oppression. The Iranian people will inscribe your position at this sensitive juncture in their hearts.

I await your action and response on this vital and urgent matter.

Vice President for Women and Family Affairs in the I.R. of Iran

Iran Says US Can’t Veto Its IMF Loan Request

Iran Says US Can’t Veto Its IMF Loan Request

“In IMF we do not have any veto power for any country, and actually it’s a policy of IMF for evenhandedness in appraisal and approval of requests,” Iranian Vice-President for Economic Affairs Mohammad Nahavandian told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour on Monday night.

“What Iran has requested for is RFI, Rapid Financial Instrument, which is an automatic instrument that governments and countries can use when they are in need of some financing,” he added.

“Iran has been a founding member of IMF, with very good record. And it is expected from this international body to do what [it] is expected to do. That request is now in due process. Many countries have expressed their support for this,” he noted.

Nahavandian said at the time of a pandemic, it is very important to realize that if you do not confine and contain the virus in one part of the world, actually you are helping to spread that virus in other parts of the world.

“So, it is not a local issue, it’s a global issue. The reality is now we are observing the dark side of globalization. The problem is global, but we do not have global solution. Now is the time of cooperation, not to start new quarrels and fight against access of one nation to medical supplies. We are all in the same boat, as they say.”

The Iranian official referred to the US sanctions and their impact on the Islamic Republic’s fight against the novel coronavirus, saying, “In Iran, in fight against the coronavirus, the difficulty is double because of the transaction costs.”

“Despite the rhetoric that food and medicine is no subject to sanctions, but as you know, trade has two ways. If you want to pay for the goods that you import, you have to use financial institutions and, all the banks and financial institutions have been subject to blackmailing by the US government. So, in reality, provision of medical supplies has been very difficult and very costly.”

Asked about Tehran’s rejection of the US’ offer of help and assistance, Nahavandian said, “Deeds have to conform your words. You cannot have it both ways. You cannot prevent access to medical supplies and medicine and food, and at the same time you say that you are ready to assist.”

“Before assistance is the step of taking away all of the obstacles that they have put in our ordinary trade, whether it be food and medical supplies, or any other trade. So, I think the first step is not sending a small package of medicine, [but] is to take away, to lift sanctions on food and medical supplies,” he went on to say.

He further rejected the doubts raised about the official figures and statistics released by the Iranian government.

“I think if you go to the cyberspace in virtual world, everything is under doubt, even the statistics from the US is being doubted on. What our health ministry has been doing during all these 45 days has been informing according to the confirmed cases; and as the testing capability grew, that is a very important part of what you just mentioned. Because of the difficulty in access testing packs, we did not have all the cases confirmed. And now we are having more information, and the screening thing that our health ministry started and has been praised by WHO, now more than 60 million peoples in the country have been screened. So, our information is growing nationwide.”

“The data shows that the peak in some of the provinces has been passed, and now we are on the de-escalating part of the curve. We are hopeful that as the cooperation of people, which was shown in the first phase, continues, we will be able to control, and the number of facilities in Iran prove that it has been sufficient to respond to all the cases who are in critical condition. We did not have any cases of a patient coming to a hospital and not being able to be treated there. And we are proud of that,” he added.

The Iranian vice-president gave an assurance that the government of President Rouhani is fully transparent on the issue of COVID-19 pandemic.

“We do not deal with the life of people, and the policy shows that the life of people is as important for us as the economic life of the people. The policy which was designed for that strengthened the budget for our health ministry, that is why we are in acceptable situation now compared to some other countries, even in Europe, even in the United States,” he noted.

“In Iran, we think that we are in control. The number of infected people, the number of patients has passed that increasing level. But we have to be very prudent. The restrictions are, so, in place. We hope that we can confine in the new provinces as it has been confined in the provinces which started with, will pass this stage,” he added.

He pointed to the gradual reopening of low-risk businesses in coming days, and said this is part of the third stage of the social distancing policy in Iran.

“Nowruz is the time for Iranians to travel around the country. When the government started informing people and asking them no to travel, it was hard for Iranians to just do that. But the statistics showed us that more than 70 percent of people voluntarily decided not to travel. Because of that, the second phase had the mandate from people to make it stricter and have some controls on the cities for people not to travel outside their state. And now, if you look at the statistics from our health ministry, today and yesterday, we can see a declining trend in many provinces in the country.”

“The third stage is called smart social distancing. So, gradually, some necessary businesses and offices are opening up, remaining at home is still the slogan. One third of the people will stay at home, people from the government offices, and unnecessary will still remain closed,” he noted.

Afghans in Iran Treated for Coronavirus for Free: Rouhani

President Hassan Rouhani said on Tuesday that the Afghan nationals should be treated at Iranian hospitals free of charge like all Iranians.

Speaking in a teleconference with governors of several provinces, Rouhani also reiterated that health protocols must be carefully observed at the borders with Afghanistan as well.

He referred to the implementation of the Smart Social Distancing Plan and the resumption of the operation of low-risk jobs as of April 11, saying that the gradual reopening of occupations must be done with full care and observance of all health guidelines and principles.

Regarding the reopening of schools and universities, he went on to say that there is no rush to reopen schools and universities. “We must ensure the full implementation of health guidelines and address the concerns of families in this regard.”

Addressing the Parliament on Tuesday, Namaki said the battle with the coronavirus is going to reach the containment stage in a number of provinces in the coming days.

He also expressed hope that Iran would get better results in controlling the contagious disease by mid-May.

“I hope we would move towards the containment of the disease in the days to come, as we have approached that limit in a number of provinces. However, it does not mean that we can immediately abandon all principles and distancing and health issues, otherwise, this dragon (coronavirus) will wake up once again,” the minister explained.

Namaki noted that Iran is still managing the disease and has not reached the containment and control phase.

He also highlighted the country’s success in handling the situation under the heavy pressure of sanctions, noting that some 30 to 50 percent of the hospital beds across the country are unoccupied.
