Haft-Seen: Permanent Fixture of Nowruz

Haft-Seen - Iranian New Year

Each year as Persian New Year approaches, Iranians prepare themselves to heartily welcome the transition of the season and usher in the New Year which usually falls on March 21. In the run-up to Nowruz everybody is in a festive mood; shops teem with people who try to pick up good bargains; and there is frenzy everywhere.Women give a face-lift to their houses, working against the clock to embrace the spring with cleanliness and freshness.

haft seen 1A time-honored tradition associated with Nowruz [which means New Day in Farsi] is preparing Haft Seen.

Haft Seen, Persian for “Seven S’s” – refers to seven items whose names start with S in Farsi – which are placed on a table along with other things as part of Iranian New Year tradition.

In the past, the items were laid on a piece of cloth, spread on the floor, around which family members would sit while dressed in their best clothes, waiting eagerly for New Year to be ringed in.

The following are the Haft Seen items and their symbolic meanings:

Sprouted wheat (Sabzeh): Iranian women or those in the family who have a green thumb usually take the responsibility of growing wheat, barley, lentils or mung beans in a dish in mid- March. Sabzeh whose green appearance is a reminder of nature symbolizes rebirth, renewal and growth after leaving behind a period of inaction in the winter.

Samanu: It’s a thick brownish dish made from germinated wheat. This sweet and nutritious paste whose preparation might take up to a week is a symbol of affluence.

Dried oleaster (Senjed): The sweet wild olive, whose texture is mealy, symbolizes love.

Vinegar (Serkeh): It is a symbol of patience and longevity because in the past it was produced through a slow fermentation process.

Apple (Sib): It represents health and beauty.

Garlic (Sir): Garlics which have therapeutic value symbolize medicine and are believed to keep evil spirits and bad omens away.

Sumac (Sumagh): This reddish-purple powder, used as a spice in Middle Eastern cuisine to add a lemony taste to meat and salads, symbolizes the color of sunrise and the triumph of good over evil. It is also believed to be the spice of life.

In case the items mentioned above are not at hand, other things can be used as replacements.

For instance, coins (Sekeh), which represent wealth and prosperity, or hyacinth (Sonbol), a bulbous flowering plant grown in the spring can be used if the number of items starting with “S” on the spread of Haft Seen falls short of seven.

Although the presence of items whose first letter is “S” in Persian is a must, Haft Seen won’t be complete without some other items. One such thing is goldfish in a bowl representing life. Another thing is a candle which is a sign of enlightenment. Sometimes a floating candle in a bowl of water, which in turn represents purity, is placed on the Haft Seen cloth.

Also placed on the spread are the following: painted eggs which symbolize fertility; a mirror, a symbol of sky and honesty; the holy Koran – to ask God for more blessing in the coming year; and a poetry book of Hafez [a prominent Persian poet] by which people ask for guidance and advice through bibliomancy at the turn of the year.

Different types of tasty pastries, sweets as well as nuts and other fruit are also put on the table, so after the coming of the New Year and exchanging gifts, all those sitting around the Haft Seen spread can dig in.

The Haft Seen table is usually cleared 13 days into the New Year when families spend a day out in the open. On this day, families take their Sabzeh out to nature and throw it into rivers. It’s believed that Sabzeh will take ill fate, pain and disease away from families in the New Year.

1399 Will Be Year of Prosperity for Iran: President Rouhani

1399 Will Be Year of Prosperity for Iran: President Rouhani

In a televised message addressed to the Iranian nation on Friday, Rouhani called for further unity and integrity in the New Year, saying, “It is unity, integrity and ethics that can create a good future for us.”

He also offered congratulations on Nowruz and the beginning of the year 1398 in the Solar Hijri calendar.

President Rouhani’s speech is as follows:

In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful

Congratulations on the arrival of Nowruz to the entire Iranians throughout the country and overseas, and also those in the region who celebrate Nowruz.

I would like to congratulate the New Year to all doctors, nurses and medical staff who are now beside our dear patients, especially those who have been infected with the virus.

The year that passed was the year of incidents and epic points in history. The biggest incidents of our history happened and the proudest epic points were made in the history by our brave people.

Rare floods at the beginning of last year caused many problems for our people in 25 provinces across the country.

This caused 35 trillion tomans in damage and destroyed more than 68,000 houses. 80,000 houses were also in need of repair. During the year, most of the houses that needed to be rebuilt were reconstructed and all houses and buildings were mended and infrastructure was built.

Great hardships and sadness were imposed on our people, but our nation remained steadfast in the flood, and then the next month, the most severe sanctions of history were imposed on our nation by global terrorists.

Our oil industry was under the toughest historical sanctions and the pressure was on our economy from every side. They thought that with such intense pressure, our people would surrender, but our great nation resisted these hardships and created a new point in history.

They thought they would drive our country to a critical point in inflation and stagnation, but all the figures tell us that in the 9 months of 1398, our economic growth has been positive and inflation has been contained as much as possible.

In the same year, the biggest economic projects of our country in recent decades were inaugurated; from huge refineries to different dams to the revival of the agricultural sector, to the great transformation in oil and gas and to the opening of the largest highways, roads and railways and ports.

So we did not lose; we resisted America’s pressure, resisted and won in the International Court of Justice against the United States, and this court convicted the United States and we won in all international communities politically and publicly.

What can be regarded as the fruit of recent technology was shot down by our air defence missiles at our southern border, proving that this nation is the creator of the greatest points in the history of our country.

The system that downed the drone was 100% Iranian. Our air defence displayed its victory against modern American technology to the entire world.

It did not take long for the United States to commit the cruellest assassination of history against our great commander, who was the commander of fighting terrorism.

But our people and the nations of the region responded so strongly that they made it a great opportunity for resistance at the regional level. The funerals held in Baghdad, Karbala and Najaf, Ahwaz, Tehran, Mashhad, Qom, Kerman and all the Iranian people showed to the world that the Iranian nation is a grateful nation.

Our warriors shattered their house of cards by showering one of their largest bases in the region with rockets. The slap was so strong that the United States is still unwilling to report its real casualties.

Along with so many bitter and sweet incidents, we witnessed the unbelievable error of one person, which resulted in the loss of 176 dear ones, mostly our fellow Iranians, who were victim of the incident.

At the end of the year, we encountered a destructive uninvited guest, not just us but also more than 150 countries and nations. Coronavirus put the lives and health of people at risk, but our doctors, nurses, hospitals and health centres came to the stage so bravely.

Here I would like to point out one important point, that over the past six years the government has invested in two special things, both in health and Healthcare Reform Plan and the cyberspace and communications and the National Information Network, the positive effects of which can be felt better today.

Today, the disease appeared when our hospital bed has doubled for the past 6 years and our hospital equipment is better than ever.

Today, we need cyberspace and the best infrastructure for the information network has been set over the past six years.

But what’s more dangerous than coronavirus, which is a disease that affects the body, is the mental illness we have to fight against.

Who would have believed that in this difficult conditions and in this disease, some would want to play with the soul and health of the people, to speak in real and cyberspace to harass the souls of the people.

We will overcome the physical coronavirus fast with unity, effort, cooperation, and the efforts of doctors; we must try to overcome the coronavirus of the soul. It is unity, solidarity and ethics that can build a good future for us.

Here I would like to tell our dear people that year 1399 will be the year of major projects, the year of prosperity with the help of all people in the economy, and the year of change in people’s lives and our economic relations with the world and our interactions with our neighbours.

Yet despite all the pressures in the year 1398, we have been able to be part of a major regional economic pact, the Eurasian Economic Union.

These are happy moments for our dear and honourable people, we will pray more in the year 1399. We will raise our hands higher to the sky. He is the Healer, we ask Him health and prosperity and a better life because He is the Merciful and Beneficent God.

Wassalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh

Iranian, Japanese Foreign Ministers Hold Talks

Iranian, Japanese Diplomats Discuss Bilateral Ties, COVID-19 Fight

A few hours after beginning of the new Iranian year, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran Mohammad Javad Zarif and his Japanese counterpart Toshimitsu Motegi held a telephone conversation as part of the international diplomatic consultations that Tehran holds regularly to counter the US regime’s economic terrorism which is threatening the health of the Iranian people.

In the conversation, Foreign Minister Zarif exchanged views about the major regional and international developments, praised the Japanese government and nation for supporting the Iranian nation in the fight against the coronavirus, and expounded on Iran’s widespread efforts to contain COVID-19.

The Iranian Foreign Minister also pointed to a report from the World Health Organization about the Iranian health system’s professional performance in the health campaign, stressing that the US’ sanctions are the main obstacle to supplying the needs for the medicine and medical equipment necessary for the rapid containment of coronavirus in Iran which must be lifted.

He also called on the government of Japan to step up efforts to remove the US’ unilateral and illegal sanctions.

For his part, Foreign Minister Toshimitsu described the Japanese government’s assistance as a sign of the friendly relations between the two countries and Japan’s solidarity with the Iranian nation.

In addition to the cash donations to Iran, Japan will be donating some free Avigan (Favipiravir) drug to Iran to help treat the patients with acute coronavirus infection, Toshimitsu added.

The two Foreign Ministers also agreed that, considering the high standards of the health system in Iran, the scientific report about the use of those drugs would be shared with the Japanese experts for advancements in medical sciences.

Iran’s Leader Names Persian New Year as Year of “Jump in Production”

In a televised New Year’s message, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei underlined that Iran can tackle its economic woes and counter sanctions by boosting domestic production.

“If we can give fresh impetus to [domestic] production, that will definitely put an end to our economic problems, and the sanctions imposed on us will end in our favor,” said the Leader.

He added that sanctions have also made the country self-reliant.

“Of course, sanctions have inflicted some losses so far, but they [sanctions] have had benefits as well because they have made us develop our own potentialities and meet people’s daily needs and local demand by tapping into domestic resources,” Ayatollah Khamenei noted.

He praised efforts made in the country to increase production, but noted that much more needs to be done to reach the desired point.

The Leader also touched upon the natural disasters such as flooding and earthquakes which struck the nation in the previous Persian Year, and said Iranians are now facing the coronavirus outbreak.

Despite all difficulties, he said, the country secured achievements as well.

Dishes Served in Iran during Nowruz: Sabzi Polo Ba Mahi

Dishes Served in Iran during Nowruz: Sabzi Polo Ba Mahi (3)

Annually on March 20 or 21, Iranian people celebrate the beginning of the Persian New Year, known as Nowruz. Just like other people around the world, people in Iran cook their own traditional foods, such as Sabzi Polo, to mark the arrival of spring and the beginning of their new year.

According to a Farsi report by Sarzamin-e Man magazine, among the main traditional dishes prepared and served on the eve or first day of Nowruz are Samanu (an Iranian sweet paste made entirely from germinated wheat), Sabzi Polo Ba Mahi (a mixture of rice and chopped herbs with fried fish), Kaak (a pastry and souvenir of the western Iranian province of Kermanshah), and Reshteh Polo (thin noodles with rice).

What follows is a brief look at Sabzi Polo Ba Mahi and the recipe and instructions for cooking it:

Nowruz’s National Dish
Sabzi Polo (a mixture of rice and chopped herbs) Ba [with] Mahi (fried fish) is the most popular dish among Iranians served on the eve or first day of Nowruz.

Why is Sabzi Polo Ba Mahi the Iranians’ main dish on the initial days of the New Year? If you look the question up on the Internet, you will be presented with a host of fascinating answers. Some believe that eating the food on the eve or first day of Nowruz is a tradition handed down from the time of King Jamshid – a mythological king of ancient Persian culture and tradition who saved mankind from a killing winter that was destined to kill every living creature, and some relate it to the story of prophet Solomon (PBUH), and the fish and discovering the truth.

A number of other people hold that eating rice and fish symbolizes prosperity and abundance in Iranians’ life and spread, respectively, and that Sabzi Polo is a symbol of the nature’s regeneration and renovation.

The truth is that these conjectures are not supported by strong evidence. Eating Sabzi Polo Ba Mahi on the eve or first day of the New Year is neither related to discovering the truth nor a tradition to be traced back this way in the nooks and crannies of the history. Today, like many other traditions and rites, no one can identify the beginning and source of this custom. It owes its survival, popularity and prevalence to media efforts and public education. Thus, it is plausible to, at least as far as the foods eaten on the occasion of or during Nowruz are concerned, forget about formulating any philosophies and enjoy its flavour.

The symbol of Esfand, the last month of the Iranian year – which ended on March 20 this year, is two fishes that are said to be responsible for bringing Mithra [in Zoroastrianism, the protector and keeper of all aspects of interpersonal relationships, such as friendship and love) to the earth after being born.

Dishes Served in Iran during Nowruz: Sabzi Polo Ba Mahi -1

As you are enjoying the beauty and symbols [fishes] of the Iranian culture and arts, you would better uphold the modern tradition by cooking fish on the eve or first day of Nowruz and enjoy its flavour. There is no single method for cooking fish on the eve of Nowruz. Some eat it on the eve of the first day of the New Year, whereas, some would like to have it as their first meal after the transition to the New Year.

Even, in some parts of Iran, such as coastal regions, the dish is served with simple – without chopped herbs – rice. Nevertheless, the dish we suggest is a mixture of rice and chopped herbs with fried fish.

Recipe

Ingredients needed for preparing a dish adequate for up to six people:

  1. Five cups of rice
  2. 2,750 grams of herbs including chives, parsley, coriander, dill and garlic
  3. Two big fish
  4. One cup of flour or bread crumbs
  5. One big onion
  6. Half a cup of lemon juice
  7. Turmeric, salt and pepper
  8. Oil as much as needed
  9. A spoonful of tamarind (optional)

Instructions

Pour some oil into a stock pot and cover it with a sheet of Lavash bread – a soft, thin unleavened flatbread made in a tandoor – or slices of potato. Then, pour the drained rice into the stock pot, on the bread or potato slices. Mix the herbs you have earlier chopped with the rice and add the garlic cloves to the mixture.

Pour a little bit more oil in the stock pot and let the ingredients be heated together for a while until they are all cooked completely. Of course, you are required to save some of the chopped parsley and coriander for frying the fish.

After cleaning the fish, mince them into equal slices and marinate them for about half an hour in a mixture of lemon juice, onion slices, salt and pepper. Prior to frying the fish slices, cover them with a mixture of flour, turmeric, salt and pepper and then put them in a frying pan containing hot oil. After frying the fishes, they can be served in any desired dish along with the cooked rice and chopped herbs.

If you want our advice, we recommend that you can improve the flavour of the fish by pouring some sour sauce on it.
Instructions for preparing the sauce:

Solve the tamarind in a glass of water and then sift the solution.

Chop the onion finely in a separate dish. You can use a grater for this purpose. Fry the finely chopped onion along with garlic cloves, a little bit of turmeric and pepper. Then, add the parsley and coriander, you had earlier saved for the sauce, to the mixture and let it be heated for a while. Now, it is time to add the tamarind solution to the mixture.

Dishes Served in Iran during Nowruz: Sabzi Polo Ba Mahi

Let the sauce be heated until it starts boiling and to gradually become thicker. Put the fried fish slices in a frying pan and place the pan on the gas stove. Now, you can put the sauce on the fish slices. Raise the lid of the pan and let the fish slices and sauce boil together for a few minutes or less, until the sauce’s water is evaporated and its flavour is imparted to the fish slices. After about 10 minutes, your fish is ready to be served.

Iran to Make up for Impact of Coronavirus on People’s Lives: VP

US Push for Economic Collapse of Iran Has Gone Nowhere: VP

Jahangiri said on Thursday three million poor households have been identified in the country, noting that aid packages are being distributed among these families.

He stressed some other facilities have been introduced in the area of tax exemption and bounced checks to counteract the adverse economic impacts of coronavirus outbreak.

He made the comments in a meeting to counter coronavirus in Tehran on Thursday.

Jahangiri further reiterated that people should not be afraid of the disease, but at the same time, people must be informed about the consequences of non-compliance with sanitary instructions.

The first vice president also appreciated the efforts of all the officials and medical staff of the country who are at the forefront of the fight against the coronavirus.

Referring to the cancellation of Friday Prayers and closure of Holy Religious Sites in Iran he stated Iran was among the first countries to close schools and universities across the country despite the high number of pupils and students.

“All efforts have been made to limit the traffic and presence of people in the community to prevent the virus from spreading, but we must compensate for students’ education through appropriate strategies.”

He said according to law enforcement reports, traffic has fallen by 40%, which means a lot of people have heeded the warnings, and hopefully others will take those instructions seriously.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the first vice president reminded that the virus will have an impact on various sectors, including the economy of countries.

He said many small businesses in the country have been suspended because of the outbreak.

“The government has made decisions to compensate for the decline in their incomes. The individuals who have no income are identified and will be assisted.”

Referring to the US pressures and efforts made by Iran to supply and import basic commodities and medicines, he said although the last year was a difficult year in terms of foreign exchange resources, $14.8 billion at the cost of 4200 tomans was allocated and spent on the provision of medicines and basic needs.

“The government’s planning and forecasts for the supply of essential commodities and the stockpiling of people’s needs made today’s multiplied purchases easy. Although chain stores sold in a single day several times more than normal, the store shelves are not empty and there is no shortage of essentials.”

Jahangiri also emphasised the need for equipping and preparing better rest centres in Tehran province saying necessary measure must be considered the worst case scenario so that there shouldn’t be any concern about lack of hospital beds.

President Rouhani Urges People to Stay Home during Nowruz Holidays

Referring to a report by the Minister of Roads and Urban Development about the decreasing trend of trips made by people, Rouhani expressed hope that people pay heed to the sanitary recommendations.

He made the comments during the meeting of the heads of the Executive, Judicial and Legislative branches with the heads of main committees of the National Headquarters to Fight against Coronavirus.

Rouhani also assigned the Minister of Interior to keep an eye on populated centres in the target provinces.

He said except for the essential centres, including drugstores, and food and other essential stuff outlets, the rest of the markets, malls, and business centres must be closed till April 3.

President Rouhani also stressed that the Ministry of Health should adopt special protocols for all activities of people, including those businesses and manufacturing centres that must work during Nowruz holidays.

“Economic policies have been implemented in two areas: supporting businesses affected by Coronavirus and providing subsidies for the affected households. Affected businesses have a three-month deadline for paying bank installments, social security shares and tax. Those who bounced checks will be given a three-month extension as well.”

He added that some good decisions are being made to provide support packages to families who have been affected largely by lack of fixed pay or certain jobs.

“All organisations are required to provide training and information on health protocols and measures to combat corona disease,” underlined Iran’s president.

During this meeting, the Minister of Health presented a detailed report on the latest situation in the country in face of the spread of coronavirus and the round-the-clock efforts of health centres.

The Minister of Interior also presented a report on the situation in the provinces and the executive plans to deal with the outbreak of the disease at the provincial level as well as the security situation in the country.

During the meeting, the Vice President for Science and Technology also presented a report on the activities of research centres and universities, as well as the moves by specialists to meet the medical needs.

The Minister of Roads and Urban Development also presented a report on the reduction of transport in the country on the eve of the New Year with the implementation of policies in this regard.

He also appreciated the good cooperation of the people in implementing the recommendations.
