President Hassan Rouhani on Tuesday described the pipeline project as a major and significant national program.

That came in a statement issued by the Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission in reaction to the resolution adopted by the IAEA’s Board of Governors against Iran.

The full text of the resolution follows.

In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful

The IAEA’s Board of Governors committed a grave mistake by issuing its politically charged and nonprofessional resolution against the Islamic Republic of Iran’s peaceful nuclear program on June 19, 2020, a resolution which lacks any legal and technical grounds.

The agency’s GOV/2020/34 resolution whose draft was presented by the three European countries of France, Britain and Germany, demands access to Iranian sites at a time when our country has, in recent years, been a place where the agency conducted the most number of its inspections and the most transparent ones. Furthermore, among all countries, Iran has had the most extensive cooperation with this international agency. But in return, the agency, under political and non-expert pressure from the US and its allies, has issued a resolution against Iran. While rejecting this resolution, the Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission stresses that:

1. Under the regulations, the IAEA is not authorized to make demands for access based on data provided by spy services, especially what relies on baseless claims by the illegitimate Zionist regime [of Israel]. The whole world should know that if Iran agrees to demands for access based on such data, it will set a wrong precedent against all countries.

2. By proposing and adopting the recent resolution, the European countries advanced the United States’ demands and showed that they are no short of the US when it comes to bearing grudge against Iran, and this will go down in the Iranian nation’s historical memory.

3. In Article 6 of the “Law on Proportionate and Mutual Action by the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Implementing JCPOA” approved in 2015, the Parliament has subjected the Iranian government’s cooperation with the agency to national interests; now, given the Board of Governor’s biased resolution, and in order to protect the Iranian nation’s inalienable rights, the Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission has drawn up and presented to the parliament floor for approval a motion which requires the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran to stop the voluntary implementation of the Additional Protocol.

4. It has been announced time and again that based on a fatwa by Leader of the Islamic Revolution [Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei], there is no room for nuclear weapons in the Islamic Republic of Iran’s defense doctrine; at the same time, the Iranian nation will not allow international institutions to violate the national sovereignty of the Islamic Republic of Iran under pressure from the US and its allies.

He also noted that the Iranian Police has obliterated a consignment of the drugs seized from smugglers in a symbolic gesture on Tuesday, saying the bulk of the illicit drugs had been destined for the foreign countries.

Highlighting Iran’s great achievements in the fight against drugs, Momeni said a 2020 report from the United Nations states that 90% of the total opium, 26% of heroin, and 48% of the morphine seized across the world have been captured by Iran.

“The laws and regulations in force in Iran reveal that the Islamic Republic of Iran is fighting against drugs decisively and genuinely at home and abroad,” he noted, saying the Islamic Republic is engaged in a long-running war against drugs no matter which country’s youth may fall victims to narcotics.

The official further said the Islamic Republic’s war on drugs has so far resulted in the martyrdom of more than 4,000 servicemen and has left more than 12,000 forces handicapped.

According to Momeni, Iran has seized more than 950 tonnes of drugs in the previous Iranian year, showing a 21% rise compared to a year before.

Iran is at the forefront of the fight against narcotics, so that all countries are expected to assist the Islamic Republic in this war, since collective cooperation would benefit themselves, he stated.

Momeni finally highlighted Iran’s interaction with the neighboring states and close cooperation with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, expressing hope for the promotion of cooperation in the months to come.

Rouhani also appreciated the resistance of Iranian nation against US pressures saying the Islamic Republic will never give in under pressure.

“Our nation stood strong and resisted. Today, it is clear for the entire world that we will not give in under pressure and sanctions. He [Trump] must work logically. Every day, lie after lie! However, we need to explain this fact to our people. Our people are making a great endeavour now. Our nation is resisting against a superpower who is operating cruelly. So, it has to be clarified and explained to people!” concluded Rouhani.

The Tuesday statement came after the Saudi Hajj authority announced that Hajj rituals would be held on a limited scale and on a domestic basis this year.

Iran’s official statement reads that the necessary arrangements had been made for sending Iranian pilgrims to Saudi Arabia.

“Moreover, due to the coronavirus outbreak, several expert meetings had been held with health experts and officials to draw up health protocols for all executive procedures of Hajj,” read the statement.

Iran Condemns New US Sanctions on China

In a press conference on Tuesday, Ali Rabiei dismissed Washington’s move as interference in Beijing’s internal affairs.

“We have expressed our concern over these interventions. And in an official letter to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, we have voiced our full support for China,” he said.

The spokesman underlined that the White House is in no position to adopt such measures.

“Here, once again we emphasize the stances of our government. The US is in no position to adopt such interventionist positions, and such interference is in flagrant breach of international regulations and of nations’ right to self-determination,” he added.

The US-Chinese relations have been strained over an array of issues, including the trade war, US sanctions on China’s military, and US ties with Taiwan, which Beijing considers a renegade province.

The two countries are also at loggerheads primarily over Washington’s assertions that China uses predatory tactics, including technology theft, in a drive to become the global leader in robotics, self-driving cars and other advanced technology.

Washington has also imposed billions of dollars in tariffs on Chinese goods as part of the trade war.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Rabiei touched upon good Tehran-Beijing cooperation.

He said the draft version of a 25-year cooperation plan between the two countries has been approved, which shows how deep-rooted Sino-Iranian ties are.

He noted the cooperation program proves the United States’ attempts to isolate Iran and cut off its relationship with the international community have failed.
