Iran minister: Children account for 20% of infections in new Covid wave

“During the sixth wave with Omicron, 20% of the infected are children, so we must take care of children, especially those under two years old, because the coronavirus is very dangerous for them, and if someone has cold symptoms, they should avoid contact with children,” the Iranian health minister explained.

“One of our tasks was to boost the people’s immunity which we did through vaccination; Omicrons is everywhere in the world and its spread cannot be stopped…to this date, 135 million doses of coronavirus vaccine have been administered in the country. 90% of the target population has received one dose, 80% two doses and 27% three doses of coronavirus vaccine,” Einollahi added.

He warned that the current wave of the disease will reach its peak in two to three weeks, urging people to observe health protocols.

On Thursday, Iran’s Health Ministry reported130 more Covid-19 deaths as the new variant of the virus spreads across the country.

The latest fatalities take the official death toll from the respiratory disease to 133,294.

The Ministry also announced that over 33,000 new infection cases had been detected over the past 24 hours with 120 cities declared coronavirus red zones.

Germany: Nuclear talks entering ‘final phase’

Baerbock spoke at a joint press conference in Tel Aviv with her Israeli counterpart, Yair Lapid, during an official visit to Israel.

Lapid said that he and Baerbock discussed the nuclear talks and presented her with Israel’s position “that a nuclear Iran endangers not only Israel, but the entire world”.

Without providing any proof, Lapid claimed that Iran is “an exporter of terror from Yemen to Buenos Aires” and that the agreement must take into account its regional aggression.

Baerbock stated that she was “convinced that a full restoration of the JCPOA would make the region more secure, including Israel, otherwise we would not be having these talks”.

She added the talks with Iran, of which Germany is a party, have reached a “very critical point” and that it was important for Iran to come back to the table “with a willingness to compromise and without maximum demands”.

“We want to do everything we can to ensure that with this agreement, Israel’s security is guaranteed,” Baerbock continued.

The US has so far failed to remove its “maximum pressure” sanctions, which it imposed on Iran after Washington pulled out of the 2015 deal, and give guarantees that a future administration will not ditch the agreement again.

Washington has recently announced it sees a path to an agreement in the Vienna talks over the nuclear deal, but Tehran must make “tough political decisions now”. Iran has repeatedly rejected any deadline or precondition over the deal, stressing the US that unilaterally withdrew from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) must first lift its sanctions against Tehran.

On Thursday, Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian said the nuclear talks will come to an end when the west shows determination to remove all sanctions imposed against Tehran.

“Today in Vienna, the United States and the western parties are faced with a litmus test in which they must show their candid behavior to the world,” Iran’s top diplomat noted.

“We have attended the [Vienna] talks with seriousness, a [clear] plan and initiative [and] are determined to reach a good agreement,” he added.

On Tuesday, Iran and the other parties to the nuclear deal gathered in the Austrian capital, Vienna, to resume the eighth round of talks aimed at reviving the accord.

Ayatollah Khamenei pardons, commutes thousands of prisoners

The convicts were sentenced to prison by public, revolutionary and military courts. Earlier, Judiciary Chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei presented the list of the convicts named for pardoning or commutation for the leader’s approval.

Ayatollah Khamenei agrees with many pardons and commutations for prisoners on various occasions throughout the year.

Russia, Britain: JCPOA must be fully implemented

Russia and Britain agree that there is an opportunity and hope for the resumption of full implementation of the JCPOA, but in this case there is a long way to go, Lavrov stated.

The remarks come as negotiators from Iran and the P4+1 group namely Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany are in the Austrian capital Vienna for intensive talks to try to revive the 2015 deal and remove unilateral U.S. sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

The eighth round of talks resumed on Tuesday after a break during which the senior negotiators returned to their capitals for discussions.

The eighth round, which began on December 27, has now become one of the longest rounds of the talks between Iran and the P4+1.

On Thursday, Iranian and European Union negotiators sat down for discussions as part of the intensive diplomatic efforts underway in the Austrian capital.

Iran refuses to sit down directly with American diplomats, meaning negotiators from Britain, China, France, Germany and Russia must shuttle between Iranian and American diplomats.

Iran insists that America must remove all sanctions imposed on Tehran after former U.S. president Donald Trump unilaterally abandoned the deal in May 2018 in violation of American commitments. It also says Washington must provide guarantees that it will not leave the deal again.

Palestine’s Abbas accused of power grab after new appointments

The Palestinian Central Council (PCC) announced the appointments to the Palestine Liberation Organization – an umbrella organisation of Palestinian political parties – after a two-day meeting on February 6 and 7 in the occupied West Bank city of Ramallah.

The meeting was criticised by Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and the left-wing Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), who said in a joint statement on Wednesday that the appointments had “neither recognition nor legitimacy”, and that they were “a violation of decisions based on national consensus”.

During the meeting, the first since 2018, three officials regarded as Abbas loyalists were appointed to the PLO’s 16-member executive committee, including controversial PA official Hussein al-Sheikh who will likely replace late chief negotiator Saeb Erekat as the committee’s secretary-general.

Two other seats were filled by close Abbas aides: Mohammad Mustafa, an independent, and Ramzi Khoury, a member of Abbas’s Fatah party.

The PCC also appointed as its chairman, and speaker of the 747-member Palestinian National Council (PNC), Fatah central committee member and Abbas aide Rawhi Fattouh.

Analysts and critics say the appointments appropriate rights that belong to the PNC, which was created as the PLO’s parliament and is the highest Palestinian governing body.

“What happened is the confiscation of the rights of the PNC, the decision-maker for such appointments,” PNC member Tayseer al-Zabbari told Al Jazeera.

The PLO executive committee’s main function is to execute policies and decisions set out by the PNC and the PCC – which was only meant to be an intermediary between the PLO and PNC.

Activists and politicians say the PNC has been slowly sidelined over time. It only managed to hold a full session once, in 1996.

The last Palestinian legislative elections took place in 2006, when Hamas won by a landslide, dealing a blow to Fatah. In 2007, weeks of violence between the factions ended with the Fatah-dominated PA administering parts of the occupied West Bank and Hamas governing the besieged Gaza Strip.

The PNC was subsequently rendered largely defunct.

In 2018, the PNC held a session that was boycotted by Hamas, Islamic Jihad and PFLP. In that session, the body – with the members present overwhelmingly belonging to Fatah – formally transferred its legislative powers to the PCC.

But political analyst Khalil Shaheen told Al Jazeera the PCC does not have the legal right to appoint key executive and legislative positions in the Palestinian leadership, and that the appointments announced on Wednesday were “a consolidation of personalities close to the president”.

“It is a continuation of his political approach and adherence to the policy of maintaining the PA,” he added.

“This requires him [Abbas] having a team around him, compliant institutions, and a security and economic relationship with the occupying state that represents the lungs through which the PA breathes,” he noted, referring to the PA’s controversial policy of security coordination with Israel.

On Sunday, small protests took place in Ramallah and Gaza rejecting the convening of the PCC.

Signs reading, “No to a central council that deepens divisions and strengthens security coordination and economic peace,” and “PNC elections are the road to unity, resistance and perseverance,” were held up.

Responding to the criticism, Omar al-Ghoul, a member of the PCC, said the PNC delegated its tasks to the council “so as not to leave any void – so that there is no constitutional violation”.

“We did what was entrusted of us, and we did not take over the role of the PNC. Rather, it was delegated to us,” he told Al Jazeera.

The closing statement of the PCC meeting on Wednesday also announced the suspension of security coordination with Israel and of its recognition of the state until it halts illegal settlement activity and acknowledges Palestinian sovereignty.

However, similar statements announcing the end of security coordination – which includes sharing intelligence about Palestinian activists – were made in the PCC’s last two summits in 2018 and 2015 but were not implemented.

Al-Sheikh is widely regarded as a frontrunner to replace Abbas, whose mandate as president expired in 2009. He was elected in the last presidential elections of 2005, following the death of former leader, Yasser Arafat.

In April 2021, Abbas was heavily criticised for postponing presidential and parliamentary elections due to take place in the following months.

In the event of Abbas’s death or him standing down from power, the next in line for the presidency would be the secretary-general of the PLO’s executive committee.

Al-Sheikh – who liaises closely with Israel in his role as civil affairs minister – is now likely to become the committee’s secretary-general, but he still needs to be formally elected by the committee.

Al-Sheikh’s political presence and involvement have become more prominent since Erekat’s death, conducting international political meetings as well as attending the recent controversial meeting between Abbas and Israeli defense minister Benny Gantz.

He has been criticised for playing a major role in maintaining the security coordination policy.

Al-Zabbari stated he believes that al-Sheikh will be elected as PLO secretary-general and that it would likely meet with institutional Palestinian approval.

“He will be given more power and ability to facilitate maintaining the relationship that he carries out day and night with the Israelis,” al-Zabbari told Al Jazeera.

Shaheen added he believes that while the issue of Abbas’ successor “is not tied to one specific person, it appears that the president is keen on maintaining his policies, and so he brings closer those he thinks can safeguard these policies”.

Iranian interior minister orders extension of Afghan poet’s visa

Vahidi also ordered the director general for foreign nationals’ affairs to report the outcome to him.

Mr. Barvar earlier posted a message on social media which prompted many officials and cultural activities to push for the extension of his visa and stay in Iran.

He had earlier said he escaped from the Taliban’s domination over Afghanistan and took refuge in Iran.

Some Afghan nationals who are in Iran or elsewhere say they will not return to their country anymore for fear of retribution at the hands of the Taliban.

The new rules in Kabul, however, have rejected any punishment for Afghans who return home.

Iran is hosting around four million Afghan refugees with more asylum seekers flocking to the borders on a daily basis since the Taliban takeover last August.

Covid-19 claims 130 more lives in Iran

The latest fatalities take the official death toll from the respiratory disease to 133,294.

The Ministry also announced that over 33,000 new infection cases had been detected over the past 24 hours with 120 cities declared coronavirus red zones.

Iran is grappling with its sixth wave of Covid-19 outbreak despite an intensified vaccination campaign over the past months.

Over 136,800,000 doses of Covid-19 vaccine have been administered in Iran so far with more than 54,700,000 people now fully vaccinated.

20,773,200 have so far received their booster jabs with health officials urging people to get their third shots as soon as possible in a bid to contain the sixth wave.

President Raisi: Message of Islamic Revolution rejection of domination

Rarisi was addressing a group of foreign ambassadors on the occasion of the 43rd anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution.

He said the Iranian people staged a revolution to decide their own fate, adding that the cause and values of the Islamic Revolution were universal and any rejection of them is tantamount to rejection of human and ethical values.

Raisi also noted that the Islamic Revolution was the product of the Iranian people’s deep faith in Islam’s lofty principles and values as well as the struggle for justice and freedom.

He added that the strategic thought of the Islamic Republic of Iran is rooted in the concept of pure Islam and the school of Imam Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Revolution.

The unique feature of our great Imam is that he was able to create a new identity called the Islamic Republic or religious democracy in the turbulent world of politics and in the region and the world, the president said.

Raisi described comprehensiveness, dynamism and intelligence as the characteristics of the foreign policy of the Islamic Republic.

He said, “We are trying to create a new chapter of bilateral or multilateral cooperation in diplomacy in order to maintain regional and extra-regional security and to meet mutual needs.”

Raisi said to this end, Iran has implemented an important part of the 25-year strategic partnership agreement with China and it’s seeking a similar agreement with Russia.

The president added that Tehran has also taken effective steps to improve relations with all neighbors and by strengthening ports and transit corridors, it’s paved the way for the development of cooperation with neighbors.

“The drills are being conducted to practice the tasks of countering and repelling external aggression in the course of a defensive operation, fighting terrorism and protecting the interests of the Union State,” the ministry said in a statement.

The participating troops will practice measures at the Domanovsky, Gozhsky, Obuz-Lesnovsky, Brestsky and Osipovichsky training grounds and on particular terrain to bolster the protection of the state border to prevent the penetration of illegal armed gangs. The troops will practice shutting down the channels of the delivery of weapons and ammunition, searching for, blocking and eliminating enemy subversive and reconnaissance groups, the ministry specified.

“The Baranovichi, Luninets, Lida and Machulishchi airfields will also be involved in the drills,” the statement says.

The joint military maneuvers have brought together command centers, units and formations of Russia’s Eastern Military District and the Belarusian armed forces, the ministry specified.

The inspection of the Union State’s response forces is running on Belarusian soil in accordance with a decision by the heads of Russia and Belarus made in December last year.
