China: US Russia sanctions put dent in world economy

Russia US China

“After the conflict between Russia and Ukraine broke out, the US and its allies have imposed waves of unilateral sanctions against Russia. But instead of solving any problems, sanctions have only put a dent in the languishing world economy,” Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Zhao Lijian said on Wednesday.

“You just raised food security. I noted that even the US President himself had to admit that ‘the price of the sanctions is not just imposed upon Russia. It’s imposed upon an awful lot of countries as well’ and that a food shortage is ‘going be real’,” he added.

“Countries all over the world already have enough on their plate, as they need to respond to COVID-19 and try to recover the economy. Against such a backdrop, sweeping and indiscriminate sanctions will not only create new irreversible loss, but may also bring shocks to the current world economic system, wiping out the outcome of international economic cooperation for decades and ultimately forcing the world’s people to pay a hefty price. It is neither just nor reasonable, and runs against international justice and people’s aspiration,” he continued.

“Dialogue and negotiation, an alternative to war and sanction, is the fundamental solution to address international and regional hotspot issues and represents the optimal way to meet all parties’ interests. The international community should continue to work for advancing Russia-Ukraine negotiations and creating conditions for political settlement,” the spokesperson noted.

“As the culprit of the Ukraine crisis, the US should especially do some soul-searching, stop its old habit of throwing its weight around and add impetus to peace talks rather than fuel to the fire. As a major country in the world, the US should also take more responsibility to defend the stability of the world economic system along with its rules and foundation. It should not willfully ask the whole world to pay for US’ unilateral sanctions,” he stated.

The international community, including US President Joe Biden, should help de-escalate the Ukrainian conflict and not “add fuel to the fire” by speculating about “genocide”, Zhao stressed.

“There is a need to end hostilities as soon as possible and stop the conflict to avoid a major humanitarian crisis,” he said at a briefing, responding to a question from a Western journalist about how Chinese authorities viewed Biden’s recent statement about “genocide caused by Russian troops”.

“All efforts of the international community should be aimed at de-escalation, there is no need to add fuel to the fire,” he added.

On Tuesday, Biden told reporters that the events in Ukraine seemed to him to be “genocide,” but he misspoke and noted that lawyers should assess what is happening.

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24 that in response to a request by the heads of the Donbass republics he had made a decision to carry out a special military operation in Ukraine, stressing that Moscow had no plans of occupying Ukrainian territories. Western countries responded to the actions of the Russian authorities by slapping sanctions, both personal and sectoral, particularly concerning the state debt and Russia’s banking sector, whereas many private companies have decided to suspend operations in Russia or fully withdraw from Russian projects and refuse investing in them

More al-Sarkhi members nabbed amid their call for destruction of Shia sites in Iraq

Iraqi security forces

Iraq’s security organization says it has so far detained 29 members of the group in the provinces of Baghdad, Basra and Najaf, among others.

The authority says the detainees have been investigated and their cases have been referred to competent courts for trials.

Meanwhile, a court in Iraq’s Maysan Province issued an arrest warrant for al-Sarkhi’s leader Mahmoud Abdolreza Mohammad, also known as Mahmoud al-Sarkhi, on Wednesday.

The arrest warrant has been issued for “open insults to the beliefs of followers of other religions”.

The whereabouts of al-Sarkhi and whether he is in Iraq are not clear. But there are reports from 2015 that he is in the northern Iraqi city of Erbil and heavily guarded by foreign security firms.

Al-Sarkhi is closely linked with Saudi Arabia, where Muftis and other religious authorities call him as the supreme religious figure of Iraq.

Iraqi officials have issued three arrest warrants for al-Sarkhi since 2014, but have failed to detain him.

The call by the group’s prayer leaders for razing of holy sites in Iraq have triggered a wave of public anger among Shias in Iraq over the past days.

Reports say angry protesters have so far torched 20 bases and seminaries affiliated with the group in Iraq

Iranian major tire production factory goes bankrupt

Kian Tire

A detailed report by the IRIB says Kian Tire was transferred to the private sector in 2003.

From then on, drastic changes happened in the factory and the final outcome was huge bank debts that adversely affected production and the workforce.

Workers of Kian Tire acknowledge that it used to produce 70 tons of tires per day before declaring bankruptcy two years ago.

In the last few months of the Persian year 1400, the factory was shut down because it received no raw material. This has left 950 workers of Kian Tire jobless.

Following efforts by local authorities, the Mostazafan Foundation and the Shasta Company are supposed to take over the management of the factory.

Meanwhile, production at Kian Tire is going to resume from next week

IRGC commander urges revenge for General Soleimani assassination

General Qasem Soleimani

Pakpour said the January 2020 attack on the US base in Iraq, Ain al Asad, was a stunning response to the enemy following the assassination of General Soleimani.

He however noted that it will suffice now if Iranians model themselves on the late general and take revenge for his assassination by the US in other ways.

The Commander of the IRGC’s Ground Force underlined that even the killing of all American leaders will not be enough to avenge the martyrdom of General Soleimani.

Therefore, he said, all Iranians must model themselves on the late general.

Pakpour also said General Soleimani’s brave deeds brought Iran such a high level of deterrence that no foreign enemy dares to attack the country.

The Commander of the IRGC’s Ground Force was speaking at General Soleimani’s tomb on Wednesday where he attended a ceremony to pay tribute to the revered military figure

EU calls for “quick conclusion” to Vienna talks at their “final stage”

EU Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Nabila Massrali

“The EU foreign policy chief, on the sidelines of the Doha summit, announced that we are close to a final agreement but a number of issues still remain to be resolved,” Nabila Massrali said.

“But basically everything is ready on the table for an agreement,” she added, stressing the need to quickly conclude the negotiations.

The Vienna talks for revival of the nuclear deal was suspended in May based on a proposal by the EU foreign policy chief and negotiators returned to their capitals for political consultations.

Almost all involved countries want a quick conclusion to the discussions but Iran says a final agreement is pending political decisions by the United States on a few key outstanding issues.

The Leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, said on Tuesday Iran will resist the US excessive demands in the Vienna talks.

Also on Monday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said the US is yet to show the necessary will to achieve an agreement.

“We are not yet at the point where the American side shows clear will for return to its obligations under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action and the [UNSC] resolution 2231,” he said.

“Unfortunately, the US is trying … to maintain some elements of the maximum pressure campaign. What is important for us is the clear and definite benefiting of Iranian people from the removal of sanctions.”

He further stressed that Iran is committed to get a “good agreement” and will “definitely” head to Vienna to finalize it when things are ready

Israeli troops kill Palestinian in West Bank

Israeli forces West Bank

According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, the 34 year-old victim, identified as Mohammad Hasan Assaf, succumbed to his injuries after being shot in the chest by Israeli forces during a military raid on the city of Nablus on Wednesday, WAFA news agency reported.

The Israeli military did not immediately comment but said earlier that its troops were “conducting counterterrorist operations” in Nablus, as well as other cities and villages of the West Bank.

Meanwhile, Ahmad Jibril, the head of the Palestinian Red Crescent Emergency and Ambulance Department, stated 17 Palestinians were injured after Israeli forces stormed the towns of Beita, al-Lubban al-Sharqiya, and Urif, in addition to Nablus.

Jibril added five Palestinians had been shot with live bullets. And one was run over by an Israeli military vehicle.

Eight Palestinians also suffered breathing difficulties after inhaling tear gas fired by the Israeli forces during clashes near Joseph’s Tomb on the outskirts of Nablus.

The Israeli forces also detained a number of Palestinian youths.

The latest development comes as Israeli forces have stepped up their acts of violence against Palestinians in the cities and villages of the West Bank, including al-Quds, with new arrests, injuries, and brutal assaults reported across the Palestinian territory.

On Monday morning, a young Palestinian died of wounds he had sustained the previous day when Israeli military forces raided the occupied northern West Bank city of Jenin and opened fire on dozens of people protesting against Israeli occupation and acts of aggression.

On Sunday night, a young Palestinian man was shot and killed by Israeli forces in the southern occupied West Bank town of al-Khader.

Earlier on Sunday, two Palestinian women had been murdered by Israeli forces in separate locations in the West Bank.

The regime in Tel Aviv has escalated its crackdown on Palestinians since the beginning of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, arresting a number of Palestinians in occupied East al-Quds, desecrating al-Aqsa Mosque, issuing new restrictions on the Palestinian people’s entry into the mosque, and ordering the demolition of Palestinian homes and agricultural facilities.

The Israeli violence, repeated on a daily basis, has led to fierce clashes between Israelis and Palestinians across the occupied territories.

Afghan Party chief: Zionism behind sedition to harm Iran-Afghanistan ties

Iran Embassy Afghanistan

Abdul Latif Pedram was referring to the recent anti-Iran gatherings in some Afghan cities, the attacks on the Iranian embassy in capital Kabul and consulate general in the city of Herat and videos on social media purportedly showing mistreatment of Afghan migrants in Iran.

“Behind the scenes of all these campaign on media and the virtual space are foreigners and enemies of the two nations and, through these, they want to … create a more dangerous crisis,” he said.

“Some of our fellow countrymen, without paying careful attention to the fact of the matter and without realizing that promoting such issues leads to what consequences and advantages and disadvantages inside the country, are influenced by the propaganda of the enemy and fuel this sedition.”

Pedram also said more than five million Afghan residents have migrated to Iran, which is itself facing sanctions and dire economic problems. Despite all these, this country has embraced Afghan migrants so this should not be “downplayed” and “undervalued”.

Pedram also talked about the attack on the Iranian consulate general in Herat.

“It was fully clear that people were recruited and traveled to Herat from far-flung areas as locals and native people of Herat are not like that and do not get trapped in the plots of the enemy,” he said.

Pedram also called on Afghan people and officials not to be deceived by such traps laid by the enemies.

During the Monday gatherings, mobs torched tires outside the Iranian missions and attacked them with stones, shattering security cameras outside the buildings

Iran embassy rejects Guardian’s report about arms supplies to Russia

The Guardian

On its Twitter account, the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran described the report by The Guardian as unrealistic and baseless storytelling.

The Iranian Embassy said the attempt to link the recent developments in Ukraine to the developments in the Middle East and mentioning the name of the Islamic Republic of Iran is an unacceptable act and a kind of disrespect to the readers of the newspaper.

It added The Guardian is expected to publish the truth, but today’s article contradicts this approach.

“We express our protest against this matter and demand the necessary action in this regard”, the Iranian Embassy in London reiterated.

The Guardian has claimed that anti-tank missiles and RPGs are being supplied to the Russian forces fighting in Ukraine through undercover networks via pro-Iran militias there.

Iran has openly said it does not take sides in the Ukraine conflict and that it believes dialog is the only solution to disputes between Moscow and Kiev.

33 more people die of Covid in Iran

COVID in Iran

Official figures show 34 cities across Iran are red and 54 ones are blue. The two colors respectively show the highest and lowest risk from Covid.

On Wednesday, Iranian Health Ministry figures showed that 33 people died of Covid in the past 24 hours. This pushed the total death toll from the virus to 140,711.

The daily caseload was 2,356 including 376 hospitalizations.

The downward trend in deaths and infections has been attributed to a nationwide vaccination drive that has seen over 148 million doses of vaccine administered over the past year. More than 26 million people are triple-vaxxed in the country of more than 85 million people.
