Covid deaths, infections jump in Iran

Health Ministry figures on Monday showed the daily death toll stood at 53 while 3,519 new cases were logged from Sunday.

The Sunday death toll and caseload were respectively 38 and 1,275. The total death toll is now 14,368.

Meanwhile, the vaccination campaign across Iran is continuing with the total number of doses so far administered standing at 147,235,430. 26,315,325 people are triple-vaxxed.

Authorities are urging citizens to get their third dose, known as the booster shot. In some countries, people are receiving their fourth dose of Covid vaccine.

Iran MPs condemn Saudi-led war on Yemen, call for end to aggression

The statement, signed by 234 MPs, was read out at the parliament’s Monday session.

“Seven years into the destructive war against an independent country … the dual behavior of the champions of human rights and the United Nations and other international organizations, which claim to champion peace, freedom and rights of nations, is now clear to everyone,” the statement said.

The MPs said such organizations are dominated by the US and other “arrogant and evil” powers, leaving no hope for them to defend the “trampled rights” of subjugated nations. “Over the past 7 years, the government of Saudi Arabia, backed by arrogant superpowers, has committed different war crimes by continued bombing of Yemeni cities and villages.

They have committed bloodshed against thousands of children, women and men among the Yemeni civilians, and with an unjust blockade, have blocked entry of drugs, food and humanitarian aid to Yemen, exposing millions of subjugated women, men and children to hunger, diseases, poverty and annihilation,” the statement said.

“At the outset of the eighth year of the destructive war on Yemen, we as lawmakers of the Islamic Consultative Assembly, condemn this evident aggression and call for an end to the military attacks and killing of the subjugated people of Yemen and removal of the blockade on the country, and voice our support for the brave resistance of Ansarullah and the resilient Yemeni nation.”

Iranian Judo champion passes away due to electrocution

Iranian national Judo champion Arash Aghaei

Aghaei, an Asian youth bronze medalist and the title holder in the International Workers Games, was born in the northwestern city of Tabriz in 1992.

He was a member of Iran’s national judo team and participated in the training competitions Iran held in Iraq last month.

President of Iran’s Judo Federation Arash Mir Esmaeli has in a message extended condolences on Aghaei’s death.

Imran Khan steps down as Pakistani PM

This comes after a political upheaval in the country that saw the opposition stage a vote of no confidence in the parliament on Sunday, with the vote called off by the deputy parliament speaker as “unconstitutional”.

Imran Khan also said foreign parties were behind the “plot” for his removal and called on the Pakistani president to dissolve the parliament and announced snap elections.

“After the dissolution of Pakistan’s parliament by the president, in accordance with the law, Mr. Imran Khan stepped down as the Pakistani prime minister. On Sunday, the President of Pakistan dissolved the parliament after a request by the premier, and called for snap elections to be held in 90 days,” the cabinet minister said in a statement.

Khatibzadeh: Iran won’t cross its red lines in Vienna

Speaking to journalists in his first news conference in the Persian New Year, Khatibzadeh noted that a deal is at hand in the negotiations.

He added that the US must take a political decision if it wants to have a deal in Vienna.

Khatibzadeh said the 2015 nuclear deal, JCPOA, and UN Security Council Resolution 2231 are at stake here.

The Foreign Ministry spokesman added that the US is trying to prevent Iran from benefiting from the JCPOA economically. He also said the Biden administration is seeking to follow in the footsteps of its predecessor Donald Trump.

Khatibzadeh then spoke of the US’s new sanctions on Iran. He said the US has a long history of taking such contradictory measures, adding that nobody should forget that what we have is a government in the US that reneges on its commitments.

Khatibzadeh said Washington is taking the remaining issues in Vienna hostage to its domestic issues. He however warned that Iran cannot be patient forever.

Referring to the recent visit by the EU’s Deputy Foreign Policy Chief Enrique Mora to Tehran, Khatibzadem said during the trip Iran made an effort to try a new path to resolve the remaining issues and that Tehran is awaiting a response from the other side.

Khatibzadeh noted that Iran has put forth many initiatives in the Vienna talks.

Elsewhere, Khatibzadeh touched on the talks with Saudi Arabia. He said Iran is ready to set a date for negotiations and wants the talks to continue. He added that the discussions with Riyadh need a clear agenda.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman said Tehran conveyed its views to the Saudis in writing, stressing, “We need to normalize our ties because the whole region and the two nations will benefit from normalization of relations.”

In other comments, Khatibzadeh spoke of the ban on girls’ education in Afghanistan. He said just as the Iranian foreign minister said in China, banning girls from going to school is not acceptable. Khatibzadeh urged Afghanistan’s rulers to act responsibly.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman said all regional countries must help Afghanistan pass through this transition period.

Official: 5k Afghans entered Iran per day since Taliban takeover

Javad Hedayati, Director General of the international transportation and transit with the Iran’s Road Maintenance and Transportation Organization says the number of entries was up to 800 a day before the Taliban takeover.

“These are people who enter Iran from official border crossings and have passports and visas … these are people who have fulfilled legal requirements and their entry is not restricted. Naturally, visas have expiry dates and these people will exit the country at the designated time,” he said.

Hedayati, however, said that there is no clear estimate of the Afghans, who enter Iran illegally.

The official added that most deadly accidents in eastern provinces, and even the southwestern province of Fars, during the Nowruz holidays were vehicles carrying smuggled Afghans in their trunks.

Pakistan PM says US diplomat involved in plot against his government

Speaking at a meeting in Islamabad, Khan claimed that Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Donald Lu was involved in the “foreign conspiracy” to topple his government.

Khan claimed that Lu warned the Pakistan Ambassador to the US, Asad Majeed, that there would be implications if the Pakistan PM survived the no-confidence vote.

The PM added that the no-trust motion against him was a “conspiracy” and thanked Allah that it failed. Pakistan’s PM last week had claimed “foreign conspiracy” in the country, saying that a foreign nation is trying to oust him over the “independent” foreign policy choices made by him.

Responding to Khan’s remarks, White House Director of Communications Kate Bedingfield rubbished the allegations regarding Washington’s role in an alleged conspiracy.

“There is absolutely no truth to that allegation,” Bedingfield told reporters.

A US State Department spokesperson also told ANI, that “there is no truth to these allegations. We are closely following developments in Pakistan. We respect and support Pakistan’s constitutional process and the rule of law.”

The relationship between US and Pakistan has been on the edge since the US withdrew from Afghanistan last summer. The increasing alignment between China and Pakistan also casts a shadow over US policy towards Pakistan.

In October last year, Wendy Sherman, the deputy secretary of state and the highest placed US official to visit Pakistan since President Joe Biden took over, told reporters her trip to Pakistan was aimed at accomplishing a ‘specific and narrow purpose’, referring to Afghanistan.

Iranian deputy parliament chief says Tehran will remain beside Syria

Speaking during a meeting with Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Miqdad in Damascus, Nikzad added that Iran is and will remain a supporter of the resistance.

He noted that the Islamic Republic of Iran will remain beside the Syria people and government in reconstructing the regions destroyed in the war.

Addressing the Syrian people, the Iranian deputy parliament speaker said, “You will rebuild Syria better than before.”

Nikzad noted that the strategic alliance between Iran and Syria is unbreakable, adding Syria and Iran are on the same page regarding global developments and they are also standing up to the global arrogance and oppressive sanctions.

He hailed the resistance fighters who defeated the Daesh terrorists in Syria, saying were it not for their resistance, Europeans and the US wouldn’t enjoy this security now.

The Syrian foreign minister also in the meeting underlined the strong bonds between the two countries in all areas and said Damascus is interested in parliamentary diplomacy with Iran.

Miqdad also called for strengthening bilateral trade relations, saying this will benefit both nations.

The Syrian foreign minister said the US and Western sanctions against Iran and Syria are deplorable and immoral.

Analyst: Meeting of Russian, Ukrainian presidents in Turkey unlikely

“The complexity of Russia’s attack on Ukraine is so that not any country can easily mediate in this case and the reason is contradictory interests that exist. In the current circumstances, Russian President Vladimir Putin and many of the members of his first circle in the Kremlin have reached the conclusion that they have made an analytical and strategic error by attacking Ukraine, and that is why I believe that these consultations and mediations will lead nowhere for the time being,” Afshar Soleimani told ILNA news.

“The presence of the US, NATO and Europe in this case has created various interests and does not allow things to subside easily. In the middle of all this, Turkey also cannot change the situation much in its favor, despite its potential.”

Soleimani stressed that talking of a meeting between Russian and Ukrainian presidents in Istanbul or Ankara is sheer speculation, especially seeing that the US, the EU, Russia and Turkey each pursues its own interests in this regard.

“Ukraine paid the price of rivalry and the cold war between Russia and the US, and, as a principle, the west does not want this equation to be solved that quickly. They want this conflict to continue so I believe the Ukraine issue will for the time being continue as it is,” he said.

Raisi also congratulated Sheikh Hamad Bin Tamim Al-Thani on the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan and called for closer cooperation.

“Tehran and Doha, tapping into their entire potential for cooperation and creation of close coordination, can take effective steps in line with the national interests of the two nations and establishment of stability and security in the region,” Raisi said.

The president also talked about the visit by the Qatari Emir to Tehran, which is planned for “the near future”.

“During this visit, major decisions in line with further expansion of ties and cooperation between the two countries, in different fields, will be made,” Raisi said.

“Tehran welcomes development of relations with Doha, in different spheres, and considers great strikes to further upgrade bilateral ties between the two countries as helpful for both nations as well as regional nations.”

During the meeting, the Qatari Emir also stressed his country’s commitment to expand ties with Tehran, stressing that Raisi’s visit to Doha plays a key role in “development of brotherly relations and strengthening of bilateral cooperation”.

Sheikh Tamim also touched on the FIFA World Cup games stressing that the Qatari minister of roads will soon hold talks with his Iranian counterpart in the southern Iranian Island of Kish to discuss relevant cooperation.
