Putin says Ukraine is ‘artificial state’

In a wide-ranging and highly anticipated interview that lasted more than two hours, Putin described in detail the process by which Ukraine was created in its current form.

He recalled that, during the feudal fragmentation of Russia in the Middle Ages, Ukraine – which he described as being part of Russian lands – came under heavy Polish cultural, religious, and political influence. In the 17th century, the people of this region wanted to join the then-growing power of Moscow, but Russia wanted to avoid war with Poland.

Nevertheless, after a lot of deliberation, Moscow decided to bring this “part of old Russian lands” back into the fold, he said, which resulted in a war with Poland. Moscow reclaimed all of its “historic lands” during the reign of Catherine the Great, who ruled between 1762 and 1796, he recalled.

After the 1917 Communist Revolution in Russia and another war with Poland, Warsaw regained control over large swaths of western Ukraine, Putin continued. In the 1920s, the Bolshevik government established a Soviet Ukraine that “had never existed before”.

The Soviet authorities were “Ukrainizing” this region, in line with similar indigenization policies pursued in other areas, the president added.

“After the Second World War, Ukraine, in addition to the territories that had belonged to Poland, received part of the territories that had previously belonged to Hungary and Romania… So, we have every reason to affirm that Ukraine is an artificial state that was shaped at Stalin’s will.”

Putin stated that these nations in principle have the right to discuss the return of their former territories, but denied that he had ever discussed the matter with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. However, he suggested that Hungarians living in Ukraine want to “get back to their historic land”.

Russia has not yet achieved its goals in the Ukraine conflict, as Nazi ideology is alive and well in the neighboring state, Putin further said.

The Russian leader insisted that the Ukraine conflict did not start in February 2022, but rather in 2014 when Kiev tried to suppress an uprising in Donbass where the local population protested against the Western-backed coup earlier that year.

Moscow’s military operation against Kiev was an attempt “to stop this war”, Putin claimed. However, he acknowledged that “we haven’t achieved our aims yet”, most notably when it comes to “denazification”.

Asked to elaborate on what ‘denazification’ means, he explained that in the search for a national identity, Ukraine “came up with nothing better than to build upon some false heroes who collaborated” with German Nazi regime during World War II.

Putin argued that this is exemplified by the visit of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to the Canadian parliament last September, during which MPs gave a standing ovation to Yaroslav Hunka, a Ukrainian Nazi SS veteran.

“He personally killed Russians, Poles, and Jews… The president of Ukraine… applauded this man. How can this be imagined?”

Although Nazi leader Adolf Hitler has been dead for 80 years, “his example lives on,” Putin said.

“Can we say that we have completely uprooted this ideology if what we see is happening today? … We have to get rid of those people who maintain this concept and support this practice and try to preserve it – that is what denazification is.”

Putin also claimed that Ukraine and Russia discussed the issue early on in the conflict.

“As strange as it may seem to you,” he told Carlson, “During the negotiations in Istanbul, we did agree that… neo-Nazism would not be cultivated in Ukraine, including that it would be prohibited at the legislative level.”

He added that this agreement would not have been “humiliating” for Ukraine, since there are no nations that allow Nazi ideology to be promoted.

Russian officials have claimed that Moscow and Kiev were close to settling the conflict in the spring of 2022, with Ukrainian neutrality as the key point on the agenda. However, according to Moscow, the process was derailed by then-UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who convinced Ukraine to keep on fighting – an allegation he denies.

Iran FM: Israel plotting to drag US into war

Amirabdollahian was speaking at a news briefing with his Lebanese counterpart in Beirut on Friday.

He said that Iran has warned the US against aiding and abetting the Zionist regime in its crimes against Palestinians.

Referring to Israel’s genecidal war against Gaza, Amirabdollahian noted Iran announces loud and clear that war is not the solution, adding that the US support for the Zionist regime will yield nothing but defeat.

In other comments, the Iranian foreign minister reaffirmed Tehran’s support for Lebanon, saying Lebanon’s security is Iran’s security.

The top Iranian diplomat further hailed the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah, saying it played its deterrent role bravely and prudently.

Amirabdollahian underlined that Tehran will continue its strong support for the resistance and Lebanon.

Iran-Russia joint economic commission to be held in Tehran

In an event in the Iranian Embassy in Moscow marking the 45th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution in Iran on Thursday, Kazem Jalali expressed hope that the meeting, which will be held on February 28, would lead to further expansion of economic and commercial ties between the two countries.

“Iran and Russia, with their existing high potentials and with strong political will, are determined to use all their capacities to promote their bilateral relations,” Jalali said.

The envoy added Iran and Russia are finalizing a comprehensive treaty of strategic cooperation between the two countries which will help achieve the economic goals.

A visa waiver agreement for tourists is also on the agenda as an effective measure in the countries’ interactions, Jalali said.

Iran Leader’s social media accounts removed

The spokesperson of the social media giant Meta claimed on Thursday the Leader’s accounts were removed for “repeatedly violating our Dangerous Organizations & Individuals policy.”

The spokesperson did not specifically refer to the ongoing events in Gaza, but the company has reportedly been under pressure by the West since Oct 7 ladt year, when the Palestinian resistance factions launched a surprise operation against Israel, to block the Iranian Leader’s accounts for his pro-Palestinian stance.

Around 28,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s military campaign since then.

Ayatollah Khamenei has on several occasions lamented the Israeli aggression and the Western inaction, and has praised the resistance fronts in Palestine, Lebanon, Yemen, Iraq and elsewhere for their reprisal anti-Israeli attacks.

At the onset of the operations, the Leader tweeted in Hebrew to Israelis, “You brought this calamity upon yourselves.”

“Dictatorial Zionists, you cannot recover from the defeat of October 7,” Ayatollah Khamenei also warned the Israeli regime, which obviously did not sit well with the Western social media moguls.

Saudi King congratulates Iranian president on 45th anniversary of Iran’s Islamic Revolution

Saudi King

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian hosted Saudi Ambassador to Iran Abdullah bin Saud al-Anzi.

During the meeting, the Saudi envoy submitted a message from King Salman bin Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia in response to Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi’s message on the developments in Gaza.

The messages, delivered to the Iranian foreign minister, also conveyed congratulations by the Saudi king and crown prince to Iran’s president on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of the victory of Iran’s Islamic Revolution.

In the meeting, Amirabdollahian also said he was satisfied with the improving ties between the two countries and expressed hope that the relations would grow “in all fields and levels in a balanced way.”

The Iranian foreign minister said the promotion of bilateral cooperation is in the interest of both countries as well as the region.

The Saudi Kingdom’s ambassador, in turn, stressed that Riyadh views the ties between the two countries as strategic, not tactical.

He added, “On behalf of the high leadership of Saudi Arabia, I have been tasked to improve our relations in all fields.”

Al-Anzi further said he was following up on the issue of flights for the Umrah hajj pilgrimage, expressing hope that the technical problem of the flights would be resolved in the near future.

Ayatollah Khamenei: Gaza is tragedy of humanity, disgracing West civilization

Ayatollah Khamenei

Addressing officials, delegations, and envoys from Islamic nations on Thursday on the occasion of Eid al-Mab’ath, when Prophet Muhammad was appointed as the last prophet, the Iranian Leader said the months-long Israeli onslaught on Gaza shows that the current world order is failing.

Ayatollah Khamenei said, “Unfortunately, the tragedy of Gaza continues. This tragedy is the tragedy of the Muslim world, and even higher, it is the tragedy of humanity. It shows that the current world order is invalid.”

The Leader also lashed out at the US for its complicity in Israeli regime’s crimes, saying, “The Zionists themselves have admitted. They say that if it were not for the US weapons, the Zionist regime would not have been able to continue and pursue the war for a single day.”

He also said the aggression on Gaza has disgraced the Western civilization and culture.

“It shows that their civilization is a civilization in which cruelty is prevalent and it is allowed, as we see before our eyes, to attack hospitals, kill hundreds of people overnight, slaughter nearly 30 thousand people, the majority of them women and children, within three or four months in the region and they are behind all of these,” the Leader explained.

Ayatollah Khamenei stated that the offensive in Gaza will stop only if the major powers in the world stop their support for the Israeli regime, stressing that that the Palestinian fighters can manage the situation on the ground.

Hamas says Netanyahu seeking to prolong war, mislead Israelis

Israel Hamas Hostages

“Netanyahu and his government are striving by all means to continue misleading Zionist public opinion and prolong the aggression, despite the losses their defeated army is suffering in terms of lives and equipment,” Osama Hamdan said during a press conference in the Lebanese capital Beirut on Wednesday.

“Both Netanyahu and his government are trying to evade their post-aggression obligations and postpone the confrontation with the investigative committees regarding the dismal failure on Oct. 7,” he added.

Hamdan said that “ministers from the occupation government have reiterated their calls to work on displacing the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip in an attempt to obstruct any path leading to halting the aggression against civilians.”

The statements came less than an hour after Netanyahu announced his rejection of Hamas’s demands to conclude a prisoner swap deal, threatening to continue fighting in the Gaza Strip and moving towards Rafah in its south.

Regarding Hamas’s demands to conclude the deal, Hamdan said “the movement has submitted its comments on the proposal to ensure a comprehensive cease-fire, end the aggression against defenseless civilians, deliver aid and relief materials, secure shelter for displaced people, ensure reconstruction, lift the siege on the Strip and conclude a prisoner swap operation.”

Hamdan added that the movement “delivered its response to Qatar and Egypt regarding the framework of a cease-fire agreement following the completion of consultations within the movement’s leadership and with resistance factions.”

He said that Hamas “dealt positively with the proposal, despite the Zionist reactions, which attempted to deny the most basic rights of the people.”

Hamdan stated a delegation from the group led by senior Hamas official Khalil al-Hayya would head to the Egyptian capital Cairo Thursday to follow up on the dialogue regarding what Hamas presented in the proposal.

On Jan. 28, a meeting was held in Paris with the participation of Israel, the US, Egypt and Qatar to discuss a prisoner swap deal and cease-fire in Gaza conducted in three stages, according to Palestinian and American sources.

Israel estimates that there are around 136 Israeli hostages in Gaza, while it is holding at least 8,800 Palestinians in its prisons, according to official sources from both sides, but there is no confirmation regarding the final numbers.

Israel has launched a deadly offensive on Gaza following an Oct. 7 cross-border attack by Hamas, killing at least 27,700 Palestinians and injuring 67,000 others, while nearly 1,200 Israelis are believed to have been killed in the Hamas attack.

The Israeli offensive has left 85% of Gaza’s population internally displaced amid acute shortages of food, clean water and medicine, while 60% of the enclave’s infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed, according to the UN.

Pakistan shuts borders, suspends mobile services on voting day

Pakistan Election

The government’s decision to deploy tens of thousands of troops at polling stations and across the country comes after two blasts near election offices, for which Islamic State later claimed responsibility, killed 26 people in the southwestern province of Balochistan on Wednesday.

It also follows a call by jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan to his supporters to wait outside polling booths after voting until results are announced. Last year, Khan’s supporters ransacked several government buildings and clashed with troops as they tried to prevent his arrest.

“As a result of the recent incidents of terrorism in the country precious lives have been lost, security measures are essential to maintain the law and order situation and deal with possible threats,” the interior ministry said in a message on X.

The borders with Iran and Afghanistan were also shut.

Despite the heavy security, one person was killed when gunmen opened fire on a patrol vehicle in the northwestern area of Tank.

Unofficial first results in the election are expected a few hours after voting closes at 5 p.m. (1200 GMT) and a clearer picture is likely to emerge early on Friday.

The main contests are expected to be between candidates backed by Khan, whose Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party won the last national election, and the Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) of three-time premier Nawaz Sharif, who is considered the front-runner.
Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the 35-year-old son of former premier Benazir Bhutto, has also run an aggressive campaign in an outside bid for the top office.

In spite of the bitter winter cold, long queues began forming at polling stations hours before voting was due to start.

Analysts say there may be no clear winner but the powerful generals could play a role. The military has dominated the nuclear-armed country either directly or indirectly in its 76 years of independence but for several years it has maintained it does not interfere in politics.

Khan believes the military is behind a crackdown to hound his party out of existence, while analysts and opponents say Sharif is being backed by the generals.

The two former prime ministers have switched places since the last election in 2018: Khan was believed to be backed by the military then and Sharif was in jail on corruption charges.

If the election does not result in a clear majority for anyone, as analysts are predicting, tackling multiple challenges will be tricky – foremost being seeking a new bailout programme from International Monetary Fund (IMF) after the current one expires in March.

Smaller political parties could play a crucial role in the formation of a government that will need 169 seats in the 336-member National Assembly. Voters directly elect 266 members while there are 70 reserved seats – 60 for women and 10 for non-Muslims – allotted according to the number of seats won by each party.

Independents, many of whom are being backed by Khan, are free to join any party if they win, which could swing fortunes after the vote. Khan has said his candidates will not back Sharif or Bhutto Zardari.

West obstructing democracy by preventing Palestinians from deciding their fate: Iran president

Ebrahim Raisi

Addressing a ceremony marking the 45th anniversary of Iran’s Islamic Revolution with foreign diplomats in Tehran in attendance, Ebrahim Raisi said the Western governments claim to be a champion of democracy, yet they’re blocking the Palestinians’ right to self-determination.

“You who talk of democracy must allow every Palestinian, whether Muslim, Christian, or Jewish, to have a vote. Everyone should have a vote,” he continued, adding that the West and the US must not interfere in the future of Palestine and only the Palestinian nation must decide its future.

Raeisi touched on the ongoing Israeli onslaught against Gaza, saying it’s a real regret that the West is supporting the genocidal war and international organizations can’t stop the bloodshed.

“[Is there] a bigger regret than the support of the US and the West for these crimes? The greatest regret is that international organizations are not effective enough,” he stated.

The Iranian president called for the current world order to be reformed, saying this unjust system has allowed the current situation in Palestine.

Raisi further called Palestinians the ultimate winner and the Israeli regime the loser in the conflict.

“Victory belongs to the Palestinian nation and the Israeli regime has been defeated as it couldn’t achieve the goals it had previously announced,” he added.
