Rights group: Israel turns ‘safe’ corridor into trap to kill displaced Gazans

Gaza War

The Geneva-based human rights organization said in a report on Sunday it has documented the killing of Palestinian civilians by Israeli troops at the Wadi Gaza [Gaza Valley] checkpoint after they were forced to flee from Gaza City to the al-Mawasi area in the south of the territory.

“Israeli forces also targeted civilians waiting for aid trucks near the checkpoint,” the rights body added.

According to Euro-Med, Israeli soldiers killed at least 30 Palestinians on Sunday evening as they waited for aid trucks near al-Nabulsi roundabout on al-Rasheed Street southwest of Gaza City.

Euro-Med added that its observers have documented horrifying testimonies about Israeli tanks firing artillery shells and bullets at more than 300 civilians, most of them women, children and the elderly, last Thursday, as they tried to flee from Gaza City to the south of the Gaza Valley.

“Despite the fact that they were carrying white flags, obeying Israeli army orders, and walking on army-designated streets, they were specifically targeted,” it said.

“This wave of forced displacement occurred at the same time that hundreds of civilians were assembling to await aid trucks. Many were taken aback when Israeli tanks emerged and opened fire on the civilians, killing 28 people and wounding about 80 more.”

The rights organization strongly condemned “unlawful killings and extrajudicial executions of Palestinian civilians” by Israeli forces, saying they amounted to grave violations of international humanitarian law.

Euro-Med also noted that massacres of displaced people of Gaza were instances of war crimes and crimes against humanity, “as well as crimes that fall under the purview of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.”

The rights organization concluded its report by calling “for the formation of an independent international investigation committee specializing in Israel’s ongoing military attack on the Gaza Strip … and opening the necessary investigations into all crimes and violations committed against Palestinians … including the deliberate killing and extrajudicial execution of civilians”.

31k Ukrainian soldiers killed in war with Russia: Zelensky

Russia Ukraine War

Speaking at the “Ukraine. Year 2024” forum in Kyiv, Zelensky said that “each of these losses is a great sacrifice” for Ukraine.

He added that “tens of thousands of civilians” had been killed in occupied areas of Ukraine, but said that no exact figures would be available until the war was over.

It’s the first time that Kyiv has confirmed the number of its losses since the start of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine on February 24, 2022.

Russia has also provided few official casualty figures. Independent Russian news outlet Mediazona reported on Saturday that about 75,000 Russian men died in 2022 and 2023 fighting in the war.

A United States intelligence report declassified in mid-December 2023 estimated that 315,000 Russian troops had been killed or wounded in Ukraine. If accurate, the figure would represent 87 percent of the roughly 360,000 troops Russia had before the war, according to the report.

It has been two years since Russia invaded Ukraine and commemorations to mark the second anniversary brought expressions of continued support, new bilateral security agreements and new aid commitments from Ukraine’s Western allies.

But Ukraine’s Defence Minister Rustem Umerov highlighted that they still needed to deliver on their commitments if Kyiv is to have any chance of holding out against Moscow and stressed that delays in arms shipments will cost lives.

“We look to the enemy: Their economy is almost $2 trillion, they use up to 15 percent official and nonofficial budget [funds] for the war, which constitutes over $100bn annually. So basically whenever a commitment doesn’t come on time, we lose people, we lose territory,” he stated, speaking at the Kyiv forum.

Europe has admitted it will fall far short of a plan to deliver more than one million artillery shells to Ukraine by March, instead hoping to complete the shipments by the end of the year.

Umerov highlighted that such delays put Ukraine at a further disadvantage “in the mathematics of war” against Russia, which the West has said is increasingly building a war economy.

Kyiv has also been weakened by the blocking of a vital $60bn US aid package amid political wrangling in the US Congress.

US President Joe Biden stressed the hold-ups directly contributed to Ukraine being forced to withdraw from Avdiivka.

On Sunday, Ukraine’s Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal stated he was “deeply convinced that the US will not abandon Ukraine in terms of financial, military and armed support”.

In recent weeks, fighting has intensified on parts of the front line. On Sunday, Russian shelling and rocket strikes continued to pummel Ukraine’s south and east.

Russian troops also appeared to be pressing on west of Avdiivka, the strategic city whose capture this month handed Moscow a significant victory.

Zelensky told a news conference on Sunday that Ukraine has a clear plan for a new counteroffensive against Russian forces.

Kyiv’s troops conducted a counteroffensive last year, but were unable to break through prepared defensive lines in the Russian-occupied south and east.

“There is a plan [for a counteroffensive], the plan is clear, I can’t tell you the details,” Zelensky continued.

He added that a major shake-up that saw the head of Ukraine’s military replaced earlier this month was connected to the new plan of action on the battlefield.

“This plan is related to the change of management; there are corresponding changes. Several plans will be prepared due to a leak of information.”

Earlier he said that Kyiv’s plans to conduct a counteroffensive last year had been leaked and ended up “on a desk in the Kremlin” before the operation had even begun.

Meanwhile at the forum in Kyiv, besides highlighting issues in military deliveries, Umerov insisted that Ukrainian forces were doing “everything that’s possible, and also what’s impossible, to secure a breakthrough” this year.

The defence minister added that a “strong” military strategy is already in place for the coming months, but did not disclose details.

Iran Drone Missile

“[There are] none. None of this is true,” Budanov said, answering a question about media reports on ballistic missiles supplied by Iran to Russia.

He stated that several such missiles were supplied to Russia by North Korea.

“However, this is also not true when it comes to large-scale applications,” Budanov concluded.

Reuters reported, citing its sources, that Iran has already sent several batches of its surface-to-surface ballistic missile to Russia since the beginning of 2024.

The Iranian permanent mission to the United Nation has announced although Tehran has the legal right to sell ballistic missiles, it has refrained from arms transactions during the Russia-Ukraine conflict to prevent an escalation of the war.

In a post on its X account, Iran’s UN mission in New York highlighted Tehran’s efforts to defuse tensions in compliance with international law.

“Despite no legal restrictions on ballistic missile sales, Iran is morally obligated to refrain from weapon transactions during the Russia-Ukraine conflict to prevent fueling the war,” the mission said.

It added that such policy “is rooted in Iran’s adherence to international law and the UN Charter.”

Lake Urmia witnesses significant water surge, but challenges persist

A flamboyance of flamingos in Lake Urmia

That is according to the Head of Aras river basin. This boost is attributed to the release of 10 million cubic meters of water from different dams in a carefully planned effort.

Despite this improvement, Lake Urmia, a globally significant saltwater lake in Iran’s West
Azerbaijan Province, continues to face challenges.

The increase in water input signals progress, but the lake’s dryness in recent years has been attributed to various factors such as climate change, excessive water usage, and agricultural practices.

The international community closely watches Lake Urmia due to its ecological importance and impact on regional biodiversity.

US-UK joint strikes on Yemen to intensify regional insecurity and instability: Iran

Nasser Kanaani

“Such arbitrary and adventurous attacks are in breach of internationally recognized regulations and principles and in violation of Yemen’s territorial integrity and sovereignty,” said the spokesman.

“The United States and Britain proved once again that they are ardent supporters of the Zionist regime’s war crimes and genocide in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank and prioritize commitment to the occupying and criminal Zionist regime’s security and illegitimate interests over international peace and security, and to that end, trample underfoot all moral and human principles as well as international rules and the UN Charter,” he explained.

“With such strikes, the US and Britain seek to stoke tension and crises in the region, spread war and instability, deflect public opinion from the Zionist regime’s war crimes and buy time for the perpetuation of the war crimes by this regime, which is accused of genocide,” the spokesman noted.

“Instead of taking effective and immediate measure to tackle the root cause of insecurity and instability, which is the Zionist regime’s warmongering and killing of hundreds of Palestinians, including women and children, on a daily basis, the US and Britain conduct military attacks on a country which seeks to put this killer regime under pressure one way or another and stop its killing machine.”

“Definitely, such arbitrary and aggression-oriented military operations will bring no gain for the aggressor countries other than the escalation of insecurity and instability in the region,” he added.

On Saturday, the Pentagon announced that that American and British military forces had carried out a joint operation against 18 targets across Yemen.

Early voting for Russian presidential election kicks off in several regions

Russia Election

According to the rules, regions may launch the early voting period after February 25, but it must be completed by March 14.

Russia’s Central Election Commission told TASS news agency that in the previous presidential election in 2018, around 180,000 people voted early, and 31,000 people voted at polling stations on ships at sea.

Voting has already started in Zaporozhye Region for people who live near the front line. In Kherson Region, early voting will start on Tuesday, and in the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, it will begin on March 10 and 11. These four former Ukrainian territories all voted to become part of Russia in referendums in 2022.

The main voting period for the 2024 presidential election will be from March 15-17. This is the first time a presidential election will be held over multiple days in the country. This format has been used in other elections in Russia after it was first introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Four people have been approved by the commission to run for president: Vladislav Davankov of the New People party, the current president, Vladimir Putin, who is running as an independent and is the frontrunner, Leonid Slutsky of the nationalist LDPR party, and Nikolay Kharitonov of the Communist Party.
