Speaking at the end of his one-day trip to Damascus, the Iranian diplomat noted that the Syrians themselves should form the committee.
IRIB News Agency quoted him as saying that the current diplomatic consultations are an attempt to facilitate the formation of the constitutional committee, but can never replace the main parties who are the Syrian people.
Referring to his meetings with President Bashar al-Assad and Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem, Jaberi Ansari highlighted that during the talks the latest developments and, in particular, the current problems surrounding the formation of the Syrian constitutional committee were discussed.
“We had very useful talks in Damascus, which were followed by consultations with our other partners, namely Turkey and Russia. We are going to continue discussions with UN representatives next week.”
He also expressed hope that, in light of these successful consultations, the way for the formation of the Syrian Constitutional Committee will be paved. He also raised hope that the move will lead to a serious Syrian-Syrian dialogue so that the nation can decide the future of the country.
Following Jaberi Ansari’s meetings with the Syrian President and foreign minister, Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad said the Islamic Republic of Iran offers honest plans to help the Syrian government and people to end the war and crisis in this country.
“The Islamic Republic provides ideas and constructive plans for restoring security in Syria,” added Mekdad.
He also hailed Iran’s support for Syria during the war, adding that Damascus and Tehran are standing strong against the enemies of this region, particularly the United States and its mercenaries.
Mekdad further pointed out that his country stands next to Iran as a friendly country in the face of cruel sanctions and US regional policies.
He also expressed hope that the Islamic Republic would stand firm against the imperialism of the US.
