Hamas armed wing responds to Haniyeh’s assassination in Tehran

Hamas

In a statement, Al-Qassam Brigades said, “With the highest expressions of pride and honour, the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades announce to our struggling Palestinian people, our Arab and Islamic nations, and the free people of the world, the martyrdom of the leader Ismail Abdul Salam Haniyeh, commander of the Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas. He was martyred following a cowardly Zionist assassination operation targeting his residence in Tehran.”

“In response to this Nazi crime”, the Hamas armed wing affirmed the following points:

Firstly, the leader and fighter “Abu al-Abd” ascended after a life filled with dedication, struggle, and sacrifices. Throughout his journey, he accompanied the various stages of the movement’s development and struggle, leaving clear contributions and marks at different points. He gave much to the Palestinian cause and played a significant role in strengthening the resistance, unifying the efforts of the nation, and directing the compass towards Jerusalem. His life culminated in martyrdom during the noblest battle, “Al-Aqsa Flood”, fought by our people and the free ones of our nation in defence of Al-Aqsa and the sanctities.

Secondly, the criminal assassination of the leader Haniyeh in the heart of the Iranian capital is a significant and dangerous event that shifts the battle to new dimensions and will have major repercussions across the entire region. The enemy miscalculated by expanding the scope of aggression, assassinating resistance leaders in various arenas, and violating the sovereignty of regional states. The criminal Netanyahu, blinded by delusions of grandeur, is driving the occupation entity toward the abyss, accelerating its collapse and permanent removal from Palestinian land.

Thirdly, this Zionist recklessness must end, and the rampant enemy must be curbed, with its meddling hand restrained to prevent further aggression. The continuous crimes of the enemy across various fronts sound an alarm for all nations and peoples of the region, compelling everyone to support and back the resistance in Palestine. This resistance serves as the front-line defence for the entire nation, which is why the enemy strives to crush and subdue it to focus on larger aggression against the nations and peoples of the region.

Fourthly, the blood of our leader Ismail Haniyeh, mingling today with the blood of Gaza’s children, women, youth, and elders, and with the blood of our people and fighters, underscores that the resistance and its leaders are at the heart of the battle alongside their people. This precious blood will not be shed in vain but will illuminate the path to liberation. The enemy will pay for its aggression with its own blood in Gaza, the West Bank, and within its borders, wherever our fighters reach by God’s will.

Haniyeh has been killed in Iran’s capital Tehran on . His death has been confirmed in separate statements by the Palestinian group that runs the Gaza Strip and the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC).

Iran’s President massoued Pezeshkian vows to make Israel ‘regret cowardly action’, as Leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei says avenging Haniyeh’s killing is Tehran’s duty.

Survey shows Iranians upbeat Pezeshkian administration able to tame inflation

Results of the poll published on Tuesday by the semi-official ISNA news agency showed that more than 54% of the people were hopeful and highly hopeful that Pezeshkian would be successful in controlling the inflation in Iran.

Some 17.8% of respondents to the survey had low expectations that the new president would succeed to contain inflation while 23.2% said he would be relatively successful.

The poll showed that 35.4% of people believed that Pezeshkian would have a high degree of success in executing his anti-inflation plans while 19.2% had almost no doubts that he would successfully control and reduce the inflation.

The poll was conducted by Sarmayeh Polling Agency in early July and after Pezeshkian won the run-off presidential election in Iran.

Some 4% of respondents didn’t have any opinion about the question on president’s chances of containing the inflation while 0.4% refused to respond.

Iran has seen high but controlled levels of inflation since 2019 when its oil exports came under US sanctions.

Inflation exacerbated in the country for a period in 2022-2023 after the global supply and demand chains were affected by the economic impacts of the coronavirus pandemic.

UN says Israel used dogs, waterboarding on Palestinian detainees from Gaza

Israeli Army

Often, they were blindfolded and shackled before being transported to Israel and placed in “cage-like” military centres and forced to wear nothing but nappies for prolonged periods, it said.

“The testimonies gathered by my Office and other entities indicate a range of appalling acts, such as waterboarding and the release of dogs on detainees, amongst other acts, in flagrant violation of international human rights law and international humanitarian law,” stated UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk in a statement.

Israel’s prison service held more than 9,400 “security detainees” as of the end of June, and some have been held in secret without access to lawyers or respect for their legal rights.

The report, which is based on interviews with former detainees and other sources, decries a “staggering” number of detainees – including men, women, children, journalists and human rights defenders – and said such practices raise concerns about arbitrary detention.

Israel’s treatment of Palestinian detainees has come under growing scrutiny following multiple media reports and statements from human rights groups describing torture.

On Monday, nine Israeli reservists were taken for questioning by the Israeli army amid a continuing investigation over serious sexual abuse against a Palestinian detainee at the Sde Teiman detention camp. Far-right politicians, including members of Knesset, have protested against the detention of soldiers suspected of sexual abuse.

Hezbollah: Haniyeh’s killing to boost resolve of resistance fighters

Hezbollah said the killing of Haniyeh will embolden the “determination and stubbornness” of “resistance fighters” and will make “their resolve stronger” in fighting against Israel.

In a statement posted on Telegram, the armed group also sent its condolences to the family of the Hamas leader.

“We in Hezbollah share with our dear brothers in the Hamas movement all the feelings of pain over the loss of this great leader, the feelings of anger at the enemy’s crimes, the feelings of pride that the leaders in our movements are leading their people and their mujahideen to martyrdom,” read the message.

Haniyeh has been killed in the Iranian capital, Tehran. The Hamas political chief and a bodyguard were assassinated in an attack on the residence where they were staying in the city.

The Hamas leader was in Iran to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian.

The Islamic Jihad, Hamas’s fellow Gaza-headquartered resistance movement, has also denounced the “sinful assassination” that had targeted “a symbol of the resistance”.

The movement, however, asserted that the atrocity would not deter the Palestinian nation from staying on the path of resistance and keeping up their efforts to put an end to the regime’s crimes that had “exceeded all limits”.

“We affirm our cohesion with our brothers in the Hamas movement in resisting the usurping entity.”

The Yemeni Houthi movement also condemned in the strongest terms Haniyeh’s assassination in Tehran, saying that the killing contravenes principles and norms of the international law.

“The assassination of Hamas politburo chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran constitutes a terrorist crime, and a flagrant violation of the international law,” the Yemeni movement announced in a statement broadcast by Yemen’s Arabic-language al-Masirah satellite television network.

It added that the heinous and cowardly assassination of the Hamas leader is a dramatic loss for the Muslim world, especially at this critical juncture of confrontation with the Israeli enemy.

“We are determined to stand by Hamas and all resistance factions in resisting the US-sponsored Zionist aggression.”

The movement went on to state that the ongoing Israeli genocidal crimes and assassinations of leading resistance figures demonstrate the regime’s abject failure and absolute incapability in the Gaza war.

The Houthis also called upon the Arab regimes that have normalized ties with Israel to awaken and work diligently to uphold the dignity of Muslims and support Palestine.

“We reiterate our pledge and determination to support Palestine and its cause. We will continue to follow the path of resistance until final victory,” it underlined.

“The crime of Haniyeh’s assassination will not deter the Palestinian nation and will not stop their resistance against the Zionist regime. Rather, it will increase their resilience and steadfastness,” the Yemeni movement underscored.

“Targeting Ismail Haniyeh is a heinous terrorist crime and a flagrant violation of laws and ideal values.” Mohammed Ali al-Houthi, head of Yemen’s Supreme Revolutionary Committee also said.

US reveals value of lethal weaponry sent to Ukraine during war

Western weapons flow to Ukraine's military

As Biden’s tenure draws to a close, further arms deliveries will hinge on the outcome of the November election. Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to continue current policies on Ukraine if she wins the vote, whereas Republican nominee Donald Trump has threatened to cut aid to Kiev.

According to a fact sheet released by the Pentagon on Tuesday, since the start of the conflict between Kiev and Moscow in February 2022, the US has allocated more than $55.4 billion in aid to Ukraine.

The document lists an array of munitions for air defense, artillery, mortar systems, anti-tank and anti-ship missiles, tanks, helicopters, drones, and a wide array of other battlefield hardware.

On Monday, the Pentagon announced a new $1.7 billion package for Ukraine, consisting largely of air defense munitions, artillery and mortar rounds, small arms, and explosives. It represents the 62nd tranche of equipment to be provided from the Pentagon’s inventories for Ukraine and since August 2021, the DOD statement said.

Previously, aid proposals for Kiev have struggled to gain bipartisan support. A $61 billion package was stalled for months in Congress earlier this year due to opposition from Republicans, before being passed in April.

Republican nominee and former President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to scale back assistance to Kiev if elected. One of his key policy proposals is to structure the aid as a loan. He has also pledged to end the conflict within 24 hours of reclaiming office.

Iran Leader: Zionist regime prepared ground for harsh punishment after assassinating Haniyeh

Ayatollah Khamenei

In reaction to the early Wednesday assassination of the head of Hamas’ political bureau, Ayatollah  Khamenei said in a message that Iran considers it a duty to “avenge the blood of Martyr Haniyeh” as he was targeted in the Iranian territory.

Ayatollah Khamenei warned, “With this move, the criminal and terrorist Zionist regime prepared the ground for a harsh punishment.”

The Leader offered his condolences to the Islamic Ummah (nation), the Resistance Front, and Haniyeh’s family over the martyrdom of the Hamas chief and lauded him for dedicating his life to the resistance and sacrificing his children and relatives in this path.

The Hamas chief was in Tehran to take part in the swearing-in ceremony of Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian held on Tuesday.

Iran condemns Israel’s violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity

In a statement on Tuesday night, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanaani described the Israeli raid as a blatant violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and a gross breach of international laws and regulations as well as the United Nations Charter.

“The despicable and criminal act by the Zionist criminal gang in the Dahiyeh area of Beirut will certainly not deter the brave sons of the proud Lebanese nation and resistance from continuing their honorable path of supporting the oppressed Palestinians and standing firm against the aggressive nature of the apartheid Israeli regime,” he added.

Kanaani reiterated the legitimate right of the Lebanese government, army, and resistance to respond to the aggressive actions of the usurping Zionist regime, holding the fake Israeli regime and the United States government responsible for escalating tensions and crises in the region.

He called on the international community and the UN Security Council to promptly fulfill their responsibilities regarding the threats posed by the Israeli regime against Lebanon’s security as well as regional and international peace and stability, the Foreign Ministry’s website reported.

The spokesperson also expressed condolences to the families of the martyrs of this aggressive attack and wished a swift recovery for the injured. He also voiced sympathy and solidarity with the government and people of Lebanon.

At least three people, including two children, were killed and 74 wounded in the Israeli strike in Beirut.

President Pezeshkian: Iran will make occupiers regret Haniyeh assassination

Masoud Pezeshkian

Pezeshkian, in a message on his X account on Wednesday, expressed condolences over the tragic loss of the Hamas chief, who was targeted in a strike in the Iranian capital, Tehran.

“Today, dear Iran is mourning its partner of sorrows and joys, the constant and proud companion of the path of resistance, the courageous leader of the Palestinian resistance, the martyr of al-Quds, Haj Ismail Haniyeh.” Pezeshkian posted the message along with his picture with Haniyeh a day earlier, saying, “Yesterday I raised his victorious hand and today I have to carry him on my shoulders.”

Haniyeh was in Tehran to attend the inauguration ceremony of Pezeshkian.

The newly-elected Iranian president said the assassination will make the bond between Iran and Palestine stronger, adding “Iran will defend its territorial integrity, honor and dignity, and make the terrorist occupiers regret their cowardly move.”

Pezeshkian cited a verse from the Quran, reading, “Allah is indeed Almighty, capable of punishment.”

Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) announced it is investigating the terrorist attack that also claimed the life of a member of Haniyeh’s security team.

Americans divided on whether US should keep funding Ukraine amid war: Report

Russia Ukraine War

The survey found 48 percent of Americans saying their country has “a responsibility to help Ukraine defend itself from Russia’s invasion”. However, 49 percent of Americans disagreed with the idea that their country has that “responsibility” in the same survey.

The Joe Biden administration announced Monday that the military will send Ukraine at least $200 million in air defenses and other weapons and has made a $1.5 billion commitment for the longer-term support of the Eastern European county’s defenses.

Despite the division on assisting Ukraine, Americans in the Pew survey were also mostly in favor of continuous “strict economic sanctions on Russia” due to its “invasion of” its neighbor, with 68 percent saying they either “strongly” or “somewhat approve” of the sanctions.

In a speech earlier this month, President Biden said Russia and President Vladimir Putin is “failing” at their war against Ukraine and that NATO, the key military alliance that has been a bulwark against Russia amid the war, has gained strength.

“Together, we built a global coalition to stand with Ukraine,” Biden added.

“Make no mistake, Russia is failing in this war. More than two years into Putin’s war of choice, its losses are staggering. More than 350,000 Russian troops, dead, wounded. … Many young people have left Russia because they no longer see a future in Russia.”

The Pew survey was conducted July 1-7, featuring 9,424 people and a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 1.3 percentage points. The question on sanctions had 4,747 respondents and a margin of error of plus or minus 1.9 percentage points.
