Russia says France wants to ‘finish off’ Ukraine

Maria Zakharova

Her remarks followed a statement by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot. In an interview with the BBC, Barrot said that Paris does “not set and express red lines” on its support for Kiev, and that long-range strikes on Russian soil may be carried out by Ukraine “in the logics of self-defense”.

“This is not support for Ukraine, but rather it is a way to finish it off,” Zakharova told TASS, referring to Barrot’s statements.

The French minister did not confirm whether missiles from his country had already been used by Kiev for long-range strikes on Russia. When asked by the BBC whether his “no red lines” comment meant Paris could send French troops to fight alongside Ukrainians, he said he “does not discard any option”.

Barrot’s comments came mere days after Ukraine struck Russia’s Kursk and Bryansk regions with US-made ATACMS and British Storm Shadows. The attacks followed a reported decision by outgoing US President Joe Biden’s administration to greenlight Kiev’s use of long-range US-supplied weaponry to hit areas Washington recognizes as Russia.

The Kremlin slammed the reported decision as a deliberate escalation of the conflict and as making the US and NATO direct participants. Earlier this week, Vladimir Putin said that the “regional” Ukraine conflict has now “assumed elements of a global nature”, and warned that further attacks with Western weapons would result in retaliatory strikes on targets of Moscow’s choosing.

In response, the Russian military on Thursday test-fired a new cutting-edge hypersonic ballistic missile, targeting a military industrial facility in the Ukrainian city of Dnepropetrovsk (called Dnipro in Ukraine). The nuclear-capable missile, called the Oreshnik, cannot be intercepted by existing Western missile defense systems, and is capable of reaching targets across Europe within minutes, Sergey Karakayev, commander of Russia’s strategic missile forces, told TASS earlier this week. The new weapon will be mass produced and incorporated into Russia’s arsenal in the coming months.

Hezbollah fires ‘340 missiles’ at Israel, casualties reported

Hezbollah Attack Israel

The Israeli military reported air raid sirens in central and northern areas, including the Tel Aviv suburbs. The military said it intercepted a number of the projectiles fired at northern Israel, and added that 250 projectiles had been fired from Lebanon.

Later on, Israeli army radio reported that ‘340 missiles’ had launched from Lebanon.

The attacks wounded at least 11 people, including a man in a “moderate to serious” condition, according to medical agencies.

Lebanon’s caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati has condemned Israeli raids on his country as an assault on US-led ceasefire efforts, calling it a “direct, bloody message rejecting all efforts and ongoing contacts” to end the war.

“(Israel is) again writing in Lebanese blood a brazen rejection of the solution that is being discussed,” a statement from his office read.

After nearly a year of limited cross-border exchanges of fire, in which Lebanon’s Hezbollah said it was acting in support of Hamas in the Gaza Strip, Israel escalated airstrikes on Lebanon on September 23, sending ground troops to southern Lebanon a week later. Hezbollah announced it would stop its attacks if Israel ceased fire in Gaza, which has been turned into a wasteland after 13 months of nonstop Israeli bombardment.

Israeli attacks have killed more than 3,500 people in Lebanon, according to the ministry. The fighting has displaced about 1.2 million people, or a quarter of Lebanon’s population.

On the Israeli side, about 90 soldiers and nearly 50 civilians have been killed by bombardments in northern Israel and in battle following Israel’s ground invasion in early October. About 60,000 Israelis have been displaced from the north part of the occupied territories since October 7, 2023.

Iran denies involvement in rabbi’s murder in UAE

The statement comes in response to allegations from some Western and Israeli media outlets accusing Iran of being behind the assassination.

In response to a question by Reuters, the Iranian Embassy in Abu Dhabi categorically rejected the claims, stating, “We strongly deny the allegations of Iran’s involvement in this individual’s murder.”

The UAE’s Interior Ministry announced on Sunday night that three suspects involved in Kogan’s murder have been arrested.

The UAE authorities stated that after Kogan’s family reported him missing, an investigation team was formed, leading to the discovery of his body and the identification and arrest of the suspected perpetrators.

Details of the incident will be disclosed after the investigation is completed, they said.

Iran preparing response to Israel: Senior advisor to Leader

Iran Missile Attack Israel

In an exclusive interview with Tasnim News Agency, Larijani said military officials are taking their time to decide the most appropriate response strategies in an operation dubbed True Promise3, in response to Israel’s violation of Iranian territories.

He stated, “Military and government officials are meticulously working on a response to the Zionist regime, ensuring that it is precise and effective.”

Citing national security concerns, Larijani indicated that detailed discussions about the response strategies cannot be extensively covered in the media.

He said, “I believe this is a matter for our military authorities to handle. They are considering various approaches, but due to national security concerns, this is not something that can be discussed publicly.”

The senior advisor also highlighted Iran’s stance on the nuclear issue, noting, “Iran will not take steps on the nuclear issue unless Western concerns about sanctions are addressed.”

Touching on the regional developments, Larijani confirmed Lebanon’s Hezbollah resistance movement has become a significant missile producer. He also dismissed the notion of removing Hezbollah from Lebanon’s political landscape.

Over 1,000 doctors, nurses killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza since start of war: Report

Gaza War

“Over 310 other medical personnel were arrested, tortured, and executed in prisons,” Gaza’s government media office said in a statement.

“The Israeli army also prevented the entry of medical supplies, health delegations, and hundreds of surgeons into Gaza,” it added.

The media office accused the Israeli army of systematically targeting hospitals as part of a plan to undermine the healthcare system in Gaza.

“Hospitals have been a declared target for the Israeli army, which bombed, besieged, and stormed them, killing doctors and nurses, injuring others after directly targeting them,” the statement noted.

Israel has launched a genocidal war on the Gaza Strip following a Hamas attack last year, killing more than 44,200 people, most of them women and children, and injuring over 104,500.

The second year of genocide in Gaza has drawn growing international condemnation, with figures and institutions labeling the attacks and blocking of aid deliveries as a deliberate attempt to destroy a population.

On Thursday, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice over its brutal war on Gaza.

Deputy foreign ministers of Iran, France, Germany, UK to meet for talks on various issues

Esmael baghaei

Addressing reporters, Baqaei emphasized Iran’s principled policy of engagement and cooperation with other countries based on the principles of dignity, wisdom, and expediency.

He described the upcoming talks with the three European countries as a continuation of the discussions held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The agenda for this round of talks, planned since the New York meeting, will include a range of regional and international topics such as Palestine and Lebanon, as well as the nuclear issue, Baqaei noted.

Another Lebanese soldier killed in Israel’s strike

Lebanon War

A military statement said that the attack targeted an army center in al-Amiriya on the Al-Qalila-Tyre road.

The attack caused heavy damage to the post, the statement added.

It was the latest in a series of Israeli attacks that have killed more than 40 Lebanese soldiers.

Israel has engaged in cross-border warfare with Lebanon, launching an air campaign in late September against what it claims are Hezbollah targets.

More than 3,600 victims have been killed by Israeli attacks in Lebanon, with more than 15,300 injured and over 1 million displaced since last October, according to Lebanese health authorities.

Tel Aviv expanded the conflict by launching a ground invasion into southern Lebanon in early October 2024.

Israeli rabbi who went missing in UAE found dead

Zvi Kogan, a 28-year-old rabbi working in Dubai for an Orthodox Jewish organisation called Chabad, disappeared on Thursday.

“The state of Israel will use all means at its disposal to bring the criminals responsible for his death to justice,” Netanyahu’s office announced in a statement.

There was no immediate comment from the UAE.

Kogan, who ran a Kosher grocery store in Dubai, was found dead by Emirati security services.

On Saturday, Netanyahu’s office said Israel was investigating Kogan’s disappearance as a “terrorist incident”.

The UAE’s state news agency WAM reported Kogan’s disappearance early on Sunday but did not mention his Israeli citizenship, identifying him only as Moldovan.

“Specialised authorities immediately began search and investigation operations upon receiving the report,” according to the Emirati interior ministry.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog described the murder as an “antisemitic attack”, adding that it would not “deter us from continuing to grow flourishing communities in the UAE or anywhere”.

Since normalising relations in 2020, many Israelis have travelled to the UAE for commerce and tourism. Jewish organisations estimate that several thousand Jews currently reside in the country.

Chabad, which has chapters worldwide, seeks to build connections with non-affiliated and secular Jews as well as other Jewish communities. Its UAE branch supports thousands of Jewish residents and visitors, according to its website.

In response to the incident, Israeli authorities renewed their warnings against all non-essential travel to the UAE and advised citizens already there to exercise caution and minimise movement.

Iran’s navy commander: Core US Naval units leaving region

Shahram Irani

Responding to questions about potential increased tensions due to the American naval presence, Admiral Irani stated that no new US units have been added and that existing ones have moved further from Iran’s region and deeper into international waters.

He noted that some core units are in the process of leaving the area.

The Iranian commander emphasized that the possibility of the region becoming more insecure or more militarized in maritime areas seems unlikely at the current juncture.

He assured that the Iranian Navy remains fully prepared and as always maintains a strong presence at sea.
