Head of Iran’s National Carpet Center says the Islamic Republic has exported $60 million worth of hand-woven carpets during the first four months of the current Iranian calendar year (started March 21).

Speaking to reporters in Tehran on Sunday, Hamid Kargar noted that the Iranian hand-woven carpets have been exported to 80 countries during the period.

He added, “In the past three years, Iran faced major problems for exports of hand-woven carpets, but the process has been reversed” since the beginning of last Iranian year (March 21, 2014), and carpet exports have slowly but gradually increased.

The official said about $330 million worth of hand-woven carpets, weighing 5,100 tons, were exported last year, showing an increase of about 2.7 percent compared to the year before it.

Kargar stated that Iran will hold its 24th exhibition of hand-woven carpets on August 23-29, adding that 71 foreign merchants, including 54 foreign nationals and 17 Iranian businesspeople living abroad, will take part in this year’s exhibition, which will be held over a total area of 30,000 square meters.

He noted that businesspeople from many countries, including Japan, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates, India, Denmark, Russia and the United States will take part in Iran’s 24th hand-woven carpet exhibition.

Last Tuesday, the Boston Globe published a report, saying that Iran’s hand-woven carpets will once again conquer US markets after sanctions imposed on the Islamic Republic over its nuclear program are lifted.

It added that “Iran’s famed carpet weavers” are “anticipating a boost in [Iran’s carpet] exports as sanctions” will be soon lifted in line with an agreement reached between Tehran and six world powers in mid-July.

On July 14, Iran and P5+1– the US, the UK, Germany, France, China, and Russia – reached the conclusion of negotiations over Tehran’s civilian nuclear program, with the Islamic Republic and the sextet sealing an agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Based on JCPOA, the sextet agreed to remove all sanctions imposed on Iran’s economic and energy sectors in return for certain restrictions in Iran’s nuclear program.

The paper quoted Kargar as saying that before sanctions, Iran’s hand-woven carpets accounted for about one-fifth of the US carpet market, adding that Iran’s carpet producers are already making carpets for the US market, hoping that exports will resume next year.

“People in the carpet business have begun to produce carpets suiting the taste of the American market, receiving orders and negotiating with customers,” he added.

Iran is still the winner even if Congress rejects nuclear deal: Salehi

Because of the ballyhoo which has pitted the US Congress against the Obama administration, the fate of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) is far from clear, Director of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi said Sunday.

The following is the translation of a report Fars News Agency filed on what else Salehi had to say in a gathering in Qazvin on August 16:

The fight between Congress and the White House over the Vienna deal is as much theatrical as wrangling between reformists and principlists here in Iran!

We would be still winners whether JCPOA produces the intended results or the US Congress rejects it and President Obama fails to do anything to stop it.

We do not break with norms and stay committed to our obligations, because we believe in logic.

The wrangling in the US is so intense. As Secretary of State John Kerry has put it if JCPOA won’t clear Capitol Hill, America’s political credit and economy will take a hit.

Iran’s negotiating team was the representative of the Iranian nation; Iran is a country where different voices can be heard.

According to the guidelines issued by the Supreme Leader, we need to explain the outcome of nuclear talks to people to the best of our ability. I personally assume responsibility for the technical aspects of JCPOA.

Some 36 hours prior to the Vienna deal, we faced a serious deadlock and planned to return home. However, hurdles were cleared in the eleventh hour which coincided with an auspicious occasion in the holy month of Ramadan. In the end, we gained what we sought.

Birjand Castle is a major tourist attraction in the city of Birjand in South Khorasan Province.

The mud and brick structure is 3,000 square meters in area and dates back to the Safavid era. It is said to have protected residents against invasion, especially by Turkmens, during the Safavid and Qajar eras.

200-plus MPs call on government to present JCPOA bill

Parliament-Iranian

A member of parliament’s Presiding Board Sunday read out a petition signed by 201 MPs, calling on the executive branch to present a bill to the chamber on the deal it has struck with P5+1.

The following is the translation of the petition as reported by Entekhab.ir on August 16:

In line with our legal obligations, we, the deputies of the Islamic Consultative Assembly, who have signed this petition announce that:

1. We thank the nuclear negotiating team for its tireless efforts in the course of the talks.

2. Under Articles 77 and 125 of the Constitution, the review of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action falls under the purview of the Islamic Consultative Assembly and requires cooperation from all relevant institutions.

3. The executive branch should immediately present the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action in the form of a bill.

4. Any voluntary measures and implementation of the deal – be it temporary, permanent or conditional – would be illegal before the approval of the Islamic Consultative Assembly and subsequent confirmation of the Guardian Council.

Deputy FM comments on Riyadh- and PGCC-Tehran ties

The deputy foreign minister for Arab and African affairs says that Iran and Saudi Arabia have to hold dialogue since they are two Muslim neighbors which can contribute to efforts to defuse the crises plaguing the region.

amir-abdolahian1Hossein Amir-Abdollahian further said that regional talks – known as G7 talks – will be held between Iran and six Persian Gulf littoral states, adding the talks, an initiative by the Qatari emir, were first proposed by Omani Foreign Minister Yusuf bin Alawi, but the idea of holding talks failed to gain traction thanks to regional conditions.

The Iranian Students’ News Agency on August 14 released his remarks on the second round of Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif’s regional tour and his proposal to set up a collective forum for dialogue in the Persian Gulf region. The following is the translation of what else he said:

G7 talks

Foreign Minister Zarif agreed to such talks which came on the back of efforts by the Qatari Foreign Ministry. During his trip to Kuwait and Qatar, he welcomed holding talks at the ministerial level in a venue to be agreed upon later.

The first phase of the talks will be held no later than September 22, and a regional country can be the venue of the talks. Our priority is to hold regional talks inside the region. The talks are of great significance, because they seek to remove misunderstandings, reach mutual understanding to tackle regional crises and restore sustainable security, stability and peace.

Dr. Rouhani has favored this idea since his election, especially by calling on Saudi Arabia to help Riyadh-Tehran ties return to normal.

Iran and Saudi Arabia

I had the opportunity to meet with Saudi Foreign Minister Mr. Adel Al-Jubeir on the sidelines of an Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) summit in Jeddah. He made frank comments on regional questions and was given franks responses in return. In the meeting, we stressed the importance of Iranian-Saudi dialogue to help crisis-hit countries in the region take on extremism and terrorism.

I call that meeting a frank, but constructive, meeting. I told the Saudi top diplomat about Iran’s stance on Syria and the need for supporting it against terrorist movements which are trying to topple the Syrian government.

Saudi words on Assad’s departure

The hasty, ill-considered comments by the Saudi foreign minister on solving the Syrian crisis and [President] Assad’s leaving office are unproductive, unreal and unnecessary.

A professional diplomat who has long record of political and international activities is not expected to make such remarks.

Tehran-Riyadh dialogue, a necessity

Adel Al-Jubeir’s words on ties between Iran and Saudi Arabia [saying that Saudi Arabia is keen to develop its relations with Iran but Tehran must change its policy that rests on its interference in the internal affairs of (P)GCC states] go too far. The head of the Saudi foreign policy machine which has a long record is not expected to make such comments. These remarks are apprehensive, imbalanced and counterproductive.

At the diplomatic level, the embassies are active in Iran and Saudi Arabia. Iran’s ambassador to Riyadh is actively present in Saudi Arabia and Riyadh pursues and handles its own affairs in Tehran through its charge d’ affaires. At the political level, talks and consultations between the two nations in regional and international circles – and sometimes in bilateral meetings – are ongoing.

Dialogue between Tehran and Riyadh is a must, given the position of the two neighboring countries [in the region]. We expect to see Saudi Arabia make the most of the existing opportunity by adopting a logical approach and tapping into constructive diplomacy.

Tehran’s strong support for Syria

Iran’s updated plan for the Syrian crisis came up for discussion during Mr. Zarif’s trip to Damascus and its basic principles and mechanism were reviewed.

Mr. Zarif and Bashar Assad held a crucial meeting. We will have more talks with related Syrian officials in this regard. The point is that Tehran will strongly support the Syrian people and government. [Under Iran’s Syria initiative] The Syrians will decide their own future as part of a democratic process.

Nuclear agreement helps Iran grow assistance to regional allies: Leader’s aide

velayati

Iranian Supreme Leader’s top advisor for international affairs Ali Akbar Velayati underlined that the nuclear agreement between Tehran and world powers has further empowered the country, allowing it to increase aid and assistance to its regional allies.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran will support the resistance front and of course, with the nuclear agreement, it will have more power for partnership and supporting its friends in the region,” Velayati said, addressing an international religious forum in Tehran on Saturday.

He referred to attempts by Western states and the reactionary regional states to overthrow the Syrian government, and said they have already failed to attain their goal.

Yet, he warned that Iran and its allies might face more challenges than in the past, and added, “The resistance front is in a much better and stronger shape and situation than the past.”

Iran ready for all scenarios: Deputy FM

araghchi

Deputy Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi underlined that Iran has prepared itself for all scenarios of nuclear agreement.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has maintained its preparedness for all scenarios and in case of any special incident it will decide about it,” Araghchi told IRNA Saturday in reaction to recent statements by US senators about the nuclear agreement between Iran and six world powers (the US, Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany).

Asked about presenting the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) to parliament, the Iranian deputy foreign minister responded that the Foreign Ministry has nothing to do with it and the government should take measure in this regard.

He reiterated that the Islamic Republic of Iran is ready for all scenarios.
