2 Terrorist Plots Foiled in Iran ahead of Elections

Religious Minorities Can Improve Iran's Global Image: Minister
Iran's Intelligence Minister Seyyed Mahmoud Alavi

Speaking at a press conference in Tehran on Sunday morning, the minister said the counter-terrorism operations were held in southeast and northwest of the country.

One of the operations occurred on February 8, when a terrorist element was identified and arrested at a southeastern border area, he explained.

The ammunition captured during the raid includes two improvised explosive devices (IEDs), explosive material and fuses, remote controls, and a bomb containing magnets, the minister added.

According to Alawi, in another operation, the intelligence forces detected and monitored a terrorist group that had plans to enter into the country from the northwestern borders.

The 4-strong team was busted on February 24, namely two days before the elections, he noted.

The terrorists had 6 suicide vests, 9 electronic fuses, some RDX explosive powder, as well as 4 British-made timer sensors, he added.

The minister then assured the nation that there is nothing out of the Intelligence Ministry’s radar screen, and that the terrorist groups will not take the time to make any move.

Countrywide parliamentary and Assembly of Experts elections were held in Iran on Friday.

Some 55 million Iranians were eligible to cast their ballots at around 53,000 polling stations across the country.

Iranian Police Chief Brigadier General Hossein Ashtari had earlier noted that his forces successfully carried out the task of ensuring security for the country’s Friday elections.

He said the Law Enforcement secured the safety of the elections in good coordination with other security forces.

Syria Truce Takes Hold despite Limited Violations

The truce, brokered by Washington and Moscow, is seen as a crucial step towards ending a conflict that has claimed 270,000 lives and displaced more than half the population.

A special international task force co-chaired by the United States and Russia hailed the ceasefire.

“The United Nations, the United States and Russia have made a positive assessment of the first hours of the cessation of hostilities,” a western diplomat said after a meeting of the International Syria Support Group (ISSG) in Geneva, AFP reported.

The UN reported “some incidents” in apparent violation of the truce, but “they have been defused”, he said.

“We really need to wait for Sunday and Monday in order to make a full assessment,” the source added.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State John Kerry “hailed” the ceasefire in a phone call and discussed ways of supporting it through cooperation between their militaries, Russia’s foreign ministry said.

The ceasefire faces formidable challenges including the exclusion of Daesh (ISIL) group and Al-Qaeda’s Syria affiliate Al-Nusra Front, which control large parts of the country.

“I think this is the first time we’ve woken up without the sound of shelling,” said Ammar al-Rai, a 22-year-old medical student in Damascus.

UN envoy Staffan de Mistura said peace talks would resume on March 7 if the ceasefire prevails and more aid is delivered — a key sticking point in negotiations.

He said it was important that any incidents are “quickly brought under control” and a military response should be the “last resort”.

Moscow has vowed to keep striking Daesh, Al-Nusra and other “terrorist groups”, but said it would ground its warplanes in the Syria campaign on the first day of the truce to avoid potential mistakes.

Among the limited ceasefire breaches, Syrian media said “terrorist groups” fired a number of shells on Damascus but caused no casualties.

President Rouhani thanks Iranians for massive turnout in elections

‘The name of the Islamic Republic of Iran become more famous with the manifestation of the power to choose of the Iranian nation,’ President Rouhani said in his message.

‘The government of prudence and hope will make a covenant with anyone whose name will come out of the ballot box to help create a future full of hope and dignity for dear Iran and Iranians,’ the Iranian president said.

President Rouhani said whatever will be the outcome of elections, the Islamic Republic of Iran will become more famous and the Islamic system, leadership and nation have won and the people of Iran have once again displayed their will and power to choose to empower the elected government and grant more credit to it.

‘The competition came to an end and now it is time to open a new way through consensus and convergence of the nation and government and by relying on opportunities created from outside, to open a new chapter in the growth and flourishing of national economy,’ he added.

Iran in Photos: Mud Volcano of Chabahar

Mud Volcano of Chabahar

In the northwest of Chabahar, 20 km away from Kahir Village, in a vast plain there is a mud volcano.

Mud volcanoes are remarkable geo-tourist attractions. There are only a handful of these volcanoes – formations created by geo-exuded slurries and gases – across the world. Sounds similar to gunshots can be frequently heard when such volcanoes are active.

The volcano in Chabahar is 20 m in height and its crater is 12 m in diameter. Over the several years of activity, the flow of mud has formed a hill around the volcano where no plant can grow.

The following images of the volcano in Chabahar, southeastern Iran, released by different websites:

Ayatollah Khamenei urges more Swiss investment in Iran

Ayatollah Khamenei made the remarks during a meeting with Swiss President Johann Schneider-Ammann in Tehran on Saturday. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani also attended the meeting.

The Leader said the Iranian public have a positive impression of the Swiss government and welcomed an increase in economic and scientific cooperation between Iran and Switzerland.

“The volume of trade exchanges between Iran and Switzerland is small and uneven and Swiss tradespeople and investors can improve on this status by becoming aware of Iran’s plentiful capacities,” Ayatollah Khamenei pointed out.

The Leader cited the lack of any negative record of Bern colluding with some Western countries in their policies of pressure and sanctions against Iran as a good cultural grounds for strengthening bilateral cooperation.

“We have always regarded Switzerland as a hub of peace, friendship and cooperation, but some European countries are not like this and their interests are [served] through warmongering [policies] and the creation of divisions,” Ayatollah Khamenei stated.

The Leader added that the Iranian people have been affected by the warmongering policies of some European countries such as the provision of European missiles and fighter jets to former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein during his 1980-1988 war on Iran.

“Such an attitude has resulted in the creation of a negative impact in the mind of our nation but there is no such a mindset in Iran about Switzerland,” the Leader said.

Ayatollah Khamenei emphasized that the Iranian government would give its full support and provide every legal guarantee about the enforcement of agreements between Tehran and Bern and urged the two countries to implement the deals with firmness.

The Swiss president, for his part, said Tehran and Bern enjoy deep-rooted and cordial relations.

He added that a roadmap, which has been envisaged during his earlier talks with President Rouhani, can help improve mutual relations.

Schneider-Ammann said his country needs to cooperate with Iran to help settle major challenges across the world, including in many European countries.

Heading a high-ranking politico-economic delegation, Schneider-Ammann arrived in Tehran on Friday. Earlier on Saturday, he held talks and attended a joint press conference with his Iranian counterpart and also met with Chairman of Iran’s Expediency Council Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani.

Time for unity, interaction following elections: Rafsanjani

“The competition is over and the era of unity and cooperation has arrived,” Rafsanjani said on Saturday, adding that no one should fuel controversial issues following the elections.

Iranians on Friday massively participated in the 10th Parliament (Majlis) and the 5th Assembly of Experts elections.

Iran’s Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli said on Saturday that some 33 million voters or more than 60 percent of eligible voters turned out in the twin crucial elections.

According to the initial results of the Assembly of Experts elections in Tehran Province released by the Interior Ministry, 1,506,803 votes have been counted so far with Rafsanjani and President Hassan Rouhani leading with 692,248 and 652,792 votes respectively.

Rafsanjani further said the Iranian nation’s high turnout in the vital double elections is a “valuable asset” to the Islamic establishment.

He expressed hope that the final results of the elections would promote Iran’s position in the region and across the globe.

“In the current highly sensitive situation in the region that insecurity has engulfed some countries, the lively holding of the elections of the Assembly of Experts and Majlis in a completely calm and orderly atmosphere can serve as a model of democracy for nations,” Rafsanjani pointed out.

At least 33 million out of 55 million eligible voters took part in the two key elections.

As many as 4,844 candidates, including about 500 women, were competing for a place in the 290-seat Parliament. A total of 159 others were running for the 88-member Assembly of Experts. Members of the Assembly serve eight-year terms while MPs are elected every four years.

Iran against Disintegration of Iraq, Syria: Larijani

“The Islamic Republic’s general policy is to support democracy in all countries,” Larijani said in a meeting with a gathering Iraqi lawmakers in Tehran on Saturday.

“However,” he added, “We are opposed to the disintegration of countries, including Iraq and Syria.”

He described moves aimed at splitting up regional countries as a conspiracy against the region.

Iran by no means is after ethnocentrism in any country, including Iraq, the Iranian parliament speaker said, adding that the enemies of Iraq raise such issues.

His remarks came after Kurdish leader Massoud Barzani earlier this month said that the time had come for the Kurdistan region to hold a non-binding referendum on independence from the rest of Iraq.

In an interview with the state-run al-Iraqiya television network on February 15, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi warned the Kurdish people about the consequences of the Kurdistan Region’s secession from Iraq, saying the planned independence referendum is not in their interests.

“I do not see any benefit in Kurds’ separation from Iraq,” Abadi said at the time.

The talk of Kurdistan region’s independence comes as Iraq has been facing the growing threat of terrorism, mainly posed by the Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group.

Daesh militants made swift advances in much of northern and western Iraq over the summer of 2014, after capturing large swaths of northern Syria.

Paris ready to develop economic-industrial cooperation with Tehran

Speaking in a meeting with Bank of Industry and Mines’ (BIM) chairman and the head of the board of directors Ali-Ashraf Afkhami, Lajugie said that in the wake of President Rouhani’s trip to France it is expected for both countries to start a new round of cooperation.

Afkhami said that BIM participates in financing infrastructure projects like steel, petrochemical, powerhouse and cement.

He added that necessary measures have been taken into action to act in post-sanction era.

He noted that over 100 million euro letter of credit was opened by BIM in the first day of post-sanction.

Election Turnout Above 60%: Iran’s Interior Minister

Speaking at a press conference in Tehran on Saturday, the minister put the turnout at over 60 percent and said counting the ballots is in progress with high precision.

The initial results of the polls in the capital, Tehran, will be released on Saturday night, he noted.

According to the minister, there will be a run-off in April in the constituencies where no candidate wins a majority.

Earlier, head of the Elections Headquarters said the final results of the polls in Tehran are expected to be announced within the next three days.

Polling stations opened on Friday morning and were scheduled to close after 10 hours. But the higher-than-expected turnout convinced the Interior Ministry to extend the voting time three times.

Some 55 million Iranians were eligible to cast their ballots at around 53,000 polling stations across the country.

4,844 and 161 candidates have been running for the parliament and the Assembly of Experts, respectively.

There are 290 seats in the Iranian parliament, elected by direct vote of people in nationwide election for four years.

The Assembly of Experts is also a high-ranking body that elects and oversees the activities of the leader of the Islamic Revolution.

Members of the 88-seat assembly are directly elected to office by people for an eight-year term. It holds biannual meetings to appoint a new chairman.
