Iran, US hold talks on direct flights

He maintained “previously, Iran Air was forced to load enough fuel to cover the outbound as well as part of the inbound sector of its flights and technical stops were often made in eastern European airports to top up when necessary resulting in longer flights, extra cost and inconveniences to passengers.”

“Currently, on the basis of a contract with France’s Total, Iran Air flights are supplied with necessary fuel in French airports,” noted the official adding “so far, London Heathrow, Amsterdam, Hamburg Fuhlsbuttel and Vienna airports have also resolved the issue for Iranian aircrafts while talks with other fuel companies are underway.”

“Following the lifting of international economic sanctions, Iran seeks to purchase 114 Airbus jets to renovate the aging fleet,” stressed Iran Air Chairman reiterating “hopefully, a part of the financing will be carried out by the National Development Fund of Iran.”

Farhad Parvaresh pointed out that preliminary talks have been held with manufacturing companies since the beginning of nuclear deal talks; “some firms had subjected the operation of contract to the implementation of JCPOA which is now successfully accomplished,” he explained, MNA reported.

He announced that the first new aircraft will enter the country after the signing of a contract; “sanctions had imposed great costs on Iranian airliners to the extent that 15 to 17 thousand dollars were spent on fuel in each flight.”

Parvaresh also noted that the number of flights will get elevated with the entry of new aircrafts to the fleet.

“Iran Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is conducting talks on direct flights between Iran and the US,” maintained the official concluding “daily flights to New York used to take place before the Islamic Revolution and they will hopefully get resumed in near future.”

Enemy role possible in Saudi embassy attack: Iran

Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, Gholam Hossein Mohseni-Ejei said, “There are implications and evidence that the enemy has used some simple-minded elements in [bringing about] the violation against the Saudi embassy.”

Saudi Arabia severed diplomatic relations with Iran on January 3 following demonstrations held in front of its embassy in Tehran as well as its consulate in the northeastern city of Mashhad by angry protesters who were censuring the Al Saud family for executing top cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr a day earlier. The cleric was an outspoken critic of Riyadh’s policies.

Some of the protesters did not have criminal intent and had simply amassed in front of the embassy building outraged by the execution, Mohseni-Ejei said, adding that those demonstrators numbered close to 200. “Some [others] are suspected to have entered the embassy with the intent to cause fire and destruction or have had the enemy infiltrated among them, [a likelihood] that is under investigation.”

The official said around 100 people have been arrested in relation to the embassy attack; a number of them, he said, have been released.

One individual has been arrested outside the country in connection with the case, Mohseni-Ejei said, adding that several people had entered the building on his orders. “Investigations are underway to see whether he and his agents are to blame for all the destruction or not.”

“The attack has been condemned by all the authorities in the establishment, and the establishment was quick to act on the incident,” he said, and asserted, “Other countries have witnessed attacks against foreign embassies too, but no country has followed up on the incident as seriously.”

The official also denounced Riyadh’s response to the incident as overreaction, asking the Islamic Republic’s authorities to respond proportionately.

Ayatollah Khamenei hails IRGC’s arrest of trespassing US sailors

Ayatollah Khamenei received on Sunday the IRGC naval forces who arrested 10 US sailors after their patrol boats entered the country’s territorial waters on January 12.

The Leader stated that the praiseworthy measure by the IRGC forces stemmed from their faith and courage and was taken in the right time.

Ayatollah Khamenei added that the capture of the US sailors “was in fact an act of God, who brought the Americans into our waters so they would be arrested with their hands on their heads through your timely measure.”

On January 13, the IRGC announced that ten US Marines, who had drifted into the country’s territorial waters in the Persian Gulf and had been taken into Iranian custody, had been released after Americans apologized for the incident.

Earlier the same day, Rear Admiral Ali Fadavi, the commander of the IRGC Navy, said two US Navy crafts carrying 10 Marines had reached three miles into the waters surrounding the Farsi Island in the Persian Gulf.

Fadavi added that the trespassing occurred because of technical problems with the navigation systems of the American vessels.

Iran, US Mulling Establishment of Direct Flights: Minister

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the ongoing CAPA Iran Aviation Summit here in Tehran, Akhondi said the Iranian Aviation Organization has launched negotiations on establishing a direct flight route between Iran and the US.

Managing Director of Iran Air Farhad Parvaresh also told reporters on Sunday that the country’s aviation officials are in talks with their US counterparts.

“The establishment of this flight route (between Iran and the US) hinges on agreements between the two sides,” he added.

While in New York to attend the 68th session of the UN general assembly back in 2013, Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani had pledged to facilitate travel to homeland for Iranian expatriates residing in the US.

The US, Los Angeles in particular, is home to hundreds of thousands of Iranian expatriates.

Travelers between Iran and the US currently have to change flights in a third country, usually in Europe or the Persian Gulf littoral states. Although personal travel is generally exempted from US sanctions, experts believed there were a couple of major obstacles before an Iran-US direct flight can resume.

The US treasury had barred Iranian airlines including Iran Air from landing or operating in the US. Furthermore, extraterritorial US sanctions used to prevent European airports from providing Iranian carriers with fuel or accepting money from them.

However, with the recent termination of anti-Iran sanctions after the implementation of a nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers on January 16, these obstacles seem to have been removed, and the grounds are expected to be prepared for the establishment of such a route.

Touching upon the recent success of Iranian Government in safeguarding the country’s nuclear rights and lifting of the illegal and tyrannical sanctions against Iran, she said, ‘We do believe in our honest, brave and courageous Iranian officials.’

She also congratulates the Iranian nation over removal of sanctions against Iran.

On November 29, 2010, unidentified terrorists attached bombs to the vehicles of Iranian university professors Majid Shahriari and Fereydoun Abbasi and detonated them.

Professor Shahriari was killed immediately, but Abbasi and his wife sustained minor injuries and were rushed to hospital.

On December 2, 2010, the Iranian Intelligence Ministry announced that the Mossad, the CIA, and the MI6 all played a role in the attacks.

Larijani: Diplomatic doors still open to Saudi Arabia

Talking to IRNA in the Iraqi capital, Larijani said the diplomatic doors are still open to Saudi Arabia, hoping that Riyadh would return from its wrong way.

Saudi Arabia is an Islamic country, said Larijani adding, ‘We never want to see it to be weakened.’

Iran always makes efforts to help the Islamic countries stand by each other not against, said Larijani.

However, the Saudis have taken steps toward the wrong path, stressed he, hoping that Saudi Arabia would come back to the moderate policies.

Pursuing this wrong policy has got many innocent people killed, injured and displaced, he added.

Referring to the new attitude adopted in the region to solve the problems and crises through Iran’s experience in the nuclear talks, Larijani said any single issue needs its own framework.

However, Iran believes that any complicated problem will be solved through negotiations, he added.

So, the experience gained in the nuclear talks can be also used for the regional problems, he stressed.

Larijani arrived in Baghdad on Saturday evening to attend the 11th Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States, (PUIC).

The conference started work on January 20 and continues until Jan 25.

Some 40 Islamic countries have attended the event. Ten participants have taken part at the level of parliament speaker.

Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain and UAEA have not taken part in the Baghdad conference.

Iran eyes buying over 100 Boeing jets

The announcement by Deputy Transport Minister Asghar Fakhrieh Kashan, quoted by Reuters on Sunday, came as Iran opened its first international business event since the lifting of sanctions.

The CAPA Iran Aviation Summit opened in Tehran with the participation of airport, airline, travel and transportation industries exploring prospects for market development in Iran.

Boeing officials were about to attend the Tehran aviation summit but their trip was cancelled due to visa issues.

One official has said Iran was considering to buy narrow-body 737s for domestic flights and two-aisle 777s for long-haul routes from Boeing.

Chairman of Iran Civil Aviation Organization Ali Abedzadeh said Sunday Iran had an immediate demand for 150 aircraft in the 250-seat range and above.

“We also need 300 medium- and long-haul aircraft while there is only nine long-range planes in our current fleet,” he added.

Iran needs 500 new commercial planes in its fleet in the next 10 years, Abedzadeh said.

Minister of Transportation Abbas Akhoundi said Iran’s aviation is open to investment by all international companies barring Israeli firms.

Representatives of Canada’s aerospace and transportation company Bombardier and Brazil’s aerospace company Embraer were among 160 delegates from 35 countries attending the Tehran aviation summit on Sunday.

“The aviation market potential in Iran is immense due to the pent-up demand after decades of sanctions,” CAPA’s Executive Chairman Peter Harbison told the event.

According to CAPA research, the size of Iran’s economy on a PPP basis sits somewhere between that of Turkey and Australia whose commercial airline fleets range between 500-600 aircraft.

“Rapid growth will not come without challenges,” said Harbison.

“This is especially the case as Iran’s aviation ecosystem will need to adapt to a generational leap forward in aircraft technology and develop aviation skills and competencies,” he added.

Commander: Any aggression to receive a crippling response

Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Brigadier General Hossein Salami made the remarks in a TV program.

Elaborating on the issue of the American sailors that entered Iran’s territorial waters recently and were arrested by the IRGC forces, the commander said the issue showed Iran’s power worldwide.

‘They did not enter the Iranian waters on purpose, but such an event happened at a proper time when it was needed the big idol to be broken,’ said the commander.

The arrest of the US sailors happened just a few days before lifting of anti-Iran sanctions and announcement of the ‘Implementation Day’ on January 16.

‘While being stopped, the American crew did not resist very much, but after that a US aircraft started showing provocative behavior for 40 minutes, said he, adding the behavior was to create psychological tension.’

About two weeks ago, when the American sailors were arrested in the Iranian waters in Farsi Island in the middle of the Persian Gulf, they were treated gently, said the commander.

About the impact of the arrest of the US sailors by the IRGC naval forces, the commander said none of the world powers are able to scare Iran in the sea.

About the recent prisoner swap between Iran and US, Salami said there was no relation between the sailors’ arrest and that swap.

About removal of anti-Iran sanctions that happened after the IAEA report on nuclear verification in Iran, Salami said the US was defeated when dealing with the Iranian nation’s resistance.

In the era of sanctions, Iran could grow and achieve the greatest successes, said he.

Country’s armed forces played a leading role in making progress in the nuclear diplomacy, said the commander.

The Iranian armed forces have been making all-out efforts to support the country’s nuclear diplomats, Salami added.

During the past four decades, he said, the US and its partners including the Zionist regime have concentrated on the World of Islam, attacked on 14 Islamic countries and waged four big wars against the Islamic nations.

On the issue of the Saudi behavior in the region and execution of the prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr by the Saudi government on January 2, the commander said the Saudi regime has unfortunately had devastating impact on the security in the Muslim nations in recent years.

Abdullah Thanks Iran for Letting Afghan Children Get Schooling

In an interview with the Tasnim News Agency in Tehran, Abdullah hailed the decision to give the Afghan children the opportunity to go to school in Iran as a “historic measure.”

“We are grateful”, he noted, adding that Ayatollah Khamenei’s order has let around 50,000 Afghan students have the opportunity to educate in Iran.

Abdullah, who was in an official visit to Tehran in January, noted that he has held talks with the Iranian officials on the issues pertaining to the Afghan migrants, including the extension of their residence permits in Iran.

Ayatollah Khamenei had already issued an order stressing that all Afghan children, even children of the undocumented migrants living in the country illegally, have the right to register and study in Iran’s schools.

As regards the process of Afghanistan’s peace talks with the Taliban, Abdullah said the government is determined to protect the Afghan people.

“We will take steps decisively and sincerely in order to fulfill the wishes of (Afghan) people, which is establishment of sustainable peace,” he said of the peace talks.

Earlier this month, senior diplomats from Afghanistan, Pakistan, China and the US met in Islamabad to try to lay the groundwork for a new round of peace talks with the Taliban.

The push for new talks has taken on urgency in recent months, as aggressive Taliban offensives have been seizing large sections of Afghan territory.
