Minister Details Iran’s Anti-Terror Raids: VIDEO

Iran Forces

Iranian Intelligence Minister Mahmoud Alawi disclosed more details of recent operations that foiled a series of terrorist attacks across the country and led to the arrest of a number of Takfiri-Wahhabi terrorists.

Speaking to reporters in Tehran on Tuesday, June 22, Alawi said a series of operations to arrest the terrorists began on June 14 and continued until June 20.

Back on Monday, the Intelligence Ministry announced in a statement that its agents had thwarted a major plot by the Takfiri-Wahhabi groups for a series of bombing raids across the country during religious events in the holy month of Ramadan.

Elsewhere in his comments, Alawi said 10 Takfiri-Wahhabi terrorists had been arrested in Tehran and three border and central provinces, noting that intelligence investigations inside and outside the country and interrogation of the terrorists are still underway.

According to the minister, the terrorists had masterminded different operations including planting bombs, detonation of remote control bombs, suicide attacks, and blowing up explosive-laden vehicles.

The terrorists wanted to carry out bombing raids in crowded locations, and had located 50 targets, the minister explained, saying they had even prepared the explosive material for some of the attacks and were preparing or receiving some for the others.

Alawi said 100kg of ready explosive material and precursor chemical compounds were confiscated in the operations, while the intelligence activities blocked the delivery of 2 tons of explosive materials to the terrorists.

The video shows an operation by Iran’s intelligence forces in which one Takfiri terrorist was arrested and a car bomb seized.

This week’s extensive operation came after three successive attacks on terrorist groups along the Iranian borders in the previous week.

On June 13, troops from the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Ground Force killed five members of the Party for Free Life in Kurdistan (PJAK) terrorist group in an ambush in Sardasht region in the north-western province of West Azerbaijan.

On the same day, Iranian police forces killed five members of the Jaish-ul-Adl terrorist group in an exchange of fire in the south-eastern province of Sistan and Balouchestan, while a trooper was also martyred.

And on June 15, IRGC forces killed a number of militants in clashes with two terrorist teams trying to intrude into the Oshnavieh border area near the frontier with Iraq.

Newspapers on Wednesday covered the remarks made by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei in a meeting with a group of poets. The headline mostly used by papers today was about the Leader’s call for poets to focus on US breaches of the JCPOA in their poems.

Another major story was the historic decrease of the headline inflation rate to a one-digit figure for the first time in more than 26 years.

The ongoing reactions to Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif’s decision to replace his deputy, and also the issue of astronomical salaries both remain top stories.

Iran Khodro, Peugeot-Citroen open joint firm

Iran Khodro Car maker

The joint company, IKAP, was inaugurated in Tehran on Tuesday June 21 in the presence of the Iranian Minister of Mine, Industry And Trade, IRNA reported.

The news comes after Peugeot-Citroen signed a €400m ($450m) joint venture with Iran Khodro. The new venture aims to produce 200,000 vehicles a year by 2018.

“This company is committed to Iran and through this Iranian company we show that we are really committed for the future and ready to invest in this country,” said Jean Christophe Quemard, director of PSA’s Middle East and Africa operations.

PSA was swift in announcing its Iran comeback after anti-Iran sanctions were lifted in January following a landmark nuclear agreement last July between Tehran and the permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany (P5+1) over the Iranian nuclear program.

“Today is the comeback of PSA to Iran. We are very proud,” PSA official added. The 50-50 joint venture will manufacture three models – the Peugeot 208, the 2008 sport utility vehicle and 301 compact – using parts mostly made in Iran, reports indicate.

Quemard also noted that the $450m will be invested over the next five years. The money will go into building manufacturing capacity in Tehran, as well as research and development, PSA said in a separate statement. Reports say Iran will export 30% of the cars produced by the new venture to the Middle East and beyond.

Iran’s Industry Minister Mohammad Reza Nematzadeh said at the ceremony that more auto joint ventures were on the way. “We are optimistic. We hope to hold a similar ceremony for one of Iran Khodro’s subsidiaries, Iran Khodro Diesel, with a German company,” he said, without naming the German company. Media reports however indicate Iran Khodro has been negotiating with Mercedes since January.

Iran is seen as one of the most promising markets for cars in the world. The country’s car production fell from 1.65 million units in 2011 to 740,000 in 2013, but PSA estimates that it will break the 2-million mark by 2022.

Zarif’s Busy Paris Diplomatic Schedule

Muhammad Javad Zarif- Iranian FM

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who arrived in the French capital on Tuesday to discuss bilateral ties and latest developments in the Middle East, is slated to meet with the President of the Senate of France Gérard Larcher on the second and last day of his visit to Paris.

Following that, Zarif will attend the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Armed Forces of the French Senate, chaired by Jean-Pierre Raffarin. The diplomat will then hold talks with President of the National Assembly Claude Bartolone.

Later this afternoon, Zarif will deliver a speech at the National School of Administration (The École nationale d’administration/ENA), followed by a high-profile meeting with French President François Hollande at the Élysée Palace.

Zarif will also hold talks with his French counterpart Jean-Marc Ayrault, and attend a session with President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Airbus Fabrice Brégier at the Ministry of Economy of France.

The Iranian Foreign Minister will wrap up his visit to Paris by meeting with French Minister of Finance and Public Accounts Michel Sapin.

Zarif is also reportedly scheduled to address reporters and journalists and attend an exclusive interview with the Paris-based television news channel France 24.

He will then depart for the Netherlands as the second leg of his two-nation European tour, before travelling to Uzbekistan’s capital city, Tashkent, to participate in a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization to be held on June 23-24.

Iran’s UN Envoy Warns of ISIS Affiliates Emerging in Afghanistan

Golamhossein Dehghani-UN

The full text of the statement reads as follows:

In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful

Mr. President,

I would like to express my appreciation to France for organizing this debate on the situation in Afghanistan. My thanks also go to the distinguished Ambassador of Afghanistan for his statement, as well as Mr. Nicholas Haysom, for his briefing and presenting the SG’s latest Report. We wish him all the best in his new assignment and wish to welcome Mr. Yamamoto as the new Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Afghanistan and head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).

My Government is concerned over the volatile situation in Afghanistan, which continues to face major security, economic and political challenges. The SG’s report refers to “continued and intense armed clashes, at their highest number recorded since 2001”, as the lead factor in further deteriorating the situation in the country.

Uncertainty over the prospect for direct talks between the Government and the Taliban is distressing as well. We condemn all violent attacks committed by the Taliban and all other terrorist groups, as well as any cooperation with them, since we believe this will encourage them in their odious behaviour and is thus counterproductive to establishing peace in Afghanistan. At the same time, Iran reiterates its support for any Afghan-led peace process.

At the same time, the emergence of Daesh and its offshoots, the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant-Khorasan Province (ISIL KP), along with a spectrum of other terrorist and extremist groups, such as the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan in north and the Islamic Movement of Eastern Turkistan are all alarming signals for more trouble in the future, if we fail to properly address them now.

Today, the Afghan National Unity Government is in the forefront of fighting terrorism. The sustained support of the international community is much more needed to shore up the Afghan Government in its fight against terrorism and extremism as well as to address the security, economic and political challenges that it faces.

Mr. President,

Strengthening regional cooperation with Afghanistan is a priority and a major pathway to consolidate peace and economic recovery in the region. We see great potential in our economic cooperation with Afghanistan, and are ready to increase bilateral cooperation, particularly on security matters, counter-narcotics efforts, development projects and economic cooperation in the fields of infrastructure and agriculture, as well as a durable solution for Afghan refugees.

During the past decade, Iran has helped Afghanistan with the completion of almost 300 projects, ranging from infrastructure to training and capacity building in human resources, especially through offering hundreds of scholarships each year.

On 23 May, the Presidents of Afghanistan and Iran and the Prime Minister of India signed the trilateral transport and transit agreement in Tehran to facilitate trade among the three countries and potentially Central Asia. This agreement covers the development of the Iranian port of Chabahar that will provide Afghanistan with access to the high seas, which will be very valuable for Afghanistan, as a landlocked country, and the whole region.

Iran and Afghanistan are also committed to increase their connectivity with emphasis on the Khaf-Herat Railway, the 78 mile-railroad project in Farah and the second bridge over the Hirmand River. A planned trilateral Afghanistan-Iran-India transit corridor is also underway.

Narcotics are a real threat for this region and beyond, and should be addressed by the international community in a very serious and comprehensive manner. Any increase in narcotics is a reflection of the prevailing insecurity and poverty. Strong support and commitment from international donors, Afghan authorities and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is essential to deter the menace of narcotics as a social health challenge and more importantly, a major source of income for extremist and terrorist groups.

On the refugee issue, Iran continues to participate in the work of the Tripartite Commission in order to plan for voluntary, safe, dignified and gradual repatriation of Afghan refugees. It is very unfortunate to learn from the SG’s Report that the year 2016 represents the lowest recorded returnee rate since the establishment of the voluntary return program in 2002, with many of the returnees choosing not to return to their areas of origin, including many who settled in urban centres. We welcome any effort to help overcome the main reintegration challenges faced by returnees and to formulate a Comprehensive Voluntary Repatriation and Reintegration Strategy.

Success in voluntary repatriation first and foremost depends on addressing the reasonable needs of repatriated refugees in Afghanistan, which underscores the necessity of mobilizing more international support for this purpose.

Over the past few decades, we have and continue to support millions of Afghan refugees, who have not been confined to camps and have had free access to Iran’s job market, despite the difficulties that the country has faced. This year, 386,000 Afghan students are enrolled in our schools and universities, which represents an increase of 36,000 due to the Government’s decision to enrol all children, regardless of their legal status. In the field of healthcare and medical services, the Afghan refugees continue to have access to public health services in the country.

Mr. President,

Iran continues its full support for the promotion of security, stability and comprehensive and sustainable development in Afghanistan since we consider the security in Afghanistan to be the security of our borders and the Region.

We support UNAMA, as well as UN agencies, in their efforts to provide development and reconstruction assistance to Afghanistan through a genuine commitment by the United Nations to a sustained partnership with Afghanistan, as set forth in Final Report of the Tripartite Review Commission on the United Nations in Afghanistan. We need to utilize the UNAMA mandate and its good offices for strengthening national institutions and capacities in priority areas requested by the Government.

Afghan Refugee Crisis: UN to Host 4-Way Meeting

Filippo Grandi
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi

Speaking to IRNA on Tuesday evening, June 21, Grandi said the UN will host the meeting, with the participation of Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and the European Union (EU).

The meeting, he said, will review solutions to permanently solve problems the Afghan refugees have been facing. No time and venue have been set for the meeting yet, he added.

The question should be solved through dialogue between Afghan officials and those countries which have accepted most Afghan refugees, Grandi said. He said the UNHCR will also offer its due aid.

The Afghan government has taken good steps towards encouraging its nationals back home, he added. Coincident with World Refugee Day on June 20, Grandi travelled to Afghanistan and met with top officials including President Ashraf Ghani.

At a press conference in Afghanistan, he elaborated on the objectives of his visit, saying the UNHCR plans to attract the attention of the global community to the issue of Afghan refugees.

About seven millions of Afghan people have moved to different world countries living there as refugees. Nearly 3m of them are in Pakistan, and about 2.5m in Iran. The rest are living in European countries.

Insecurity and unemployment are underscored as two major reasons forcing Afghan nationals to leave their own country.

China’s Oil Imports from Iran up 19.5%

Oil transfer

Figures released by the Chinese General Administration of Customs showed on Tuesday that the country imported around 619,300 barrels per day (bpd) of oil from Iran over the month.

Russia over the same period became the bigger supplier to China by exporting 1.24 million bpd of oil to the country.  The figure showed an increase of a whopping 337 percent compared to the same period last year.

Shipments from second-ranking supplier Saudi Arabia grew 33.6 percent last month over the year-ago level to around 961,000 bpd, Reuters has said in a report quoting official data.

The increase in Iran’s oil exports to China comes as the Islamic Republic is seen to have rapidly boosted its exports at a much faster pace than earlier anticipated.

Reuters in a report in early June quoted traders as saying that Iran’s oil exports are now close to pre-sanction levels of around 2.5 million bpd.

This, they said, show that the country is regaining the share of the oil market it lost as a result of sanctions.

Iran’s oil exports were between 2.1 and 2.3 million bpd in April and May, up from 1.3 million bpd a year ago, when Iran was shut out of the European market and dependent on limited shipments to Asian buyers, it added.

Asia is the main destination for crude shipped by foreign vessels, with India, China and Japan the biggest takers, said Reuters.

Revocation of Cleric’s Citizenship to Spark “Crushing Uprising” in Bahrain: IRGC

IRGC logo

In a statement on Tuesday, the IRGC took a swipe at the “racist” Al Khalifa dynasty for its “inhumane measure” to revoke the prominent cleric’s citizenship, saying the move runs counter to Islamic values and internationally-recognized norms and is at odds with the dignity of the Arab world people and the Bahraini nation.

The decision is a result of “the anti-Islam strategies of the hegemonic and Zionist system and a plot hatched by the Al Saud,” it added.

The statement went on to say that such an unwise move by the Al Khalifa family will “fan the flames of Bahrain’s Islamic revolution” and trigger a “crushing uprising” against the ruling regime.

The shaky foundations of the US protégées will soon collapse with the will of the Bahraini nation, it underscored.

The IRGC then gave a warning to the rulers of the “illegitimate Al Khalifa regime” that if they do not stop pursuing “Zionist-favored adventurism” and fail to acknowledge the rightful demands of the Bahraini people, they will have to suffer the same fate as that of the late dictators in some other Muslim countries.

Bahrain said Monday that the citizenship of Sheikh Qassim has been revoked, accusing him of sowing sectarian divisions.

The move has drawn widespread criticism internationally.

It came days after a regime’s court issued an order earlier suspending the activities of Bahrain’s main opposition bloc, Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society, on charges of “terrorism, extremism, and violence”.

Bahrain, a close ally of the US in the Persian Gulf region, has been witnessing almost daily protests against the ruling Al Khalifa dynasty since early 2011, with Manama using heavy-handed measures in an attempt to crush the demonstrations.

Scores of Bahrainis have been killed and hundreds of others injured and arrested in the ongoing crackdown on the peaceful demonstrations.

Amnesty International and many other international rights organizations have frequently censured the Bahraini regime for the rampant human rights abuses against opposition groups and anti-regime protesters.

Muslims Must Unite, Fight Terror on Their Own: FM Zarif

Mohammad Javad Zarif

“In the Islamic world, we need to show how we can fight, by ourselves, the extremism and terrorism that has affected the Muslim world,” Zarif said in Paris on Tuesday night.

“Instead of accentuating our differences, we must show how our common challenges are in the name of Islam and for development of the Islamic states and Muslim community,” he added.

Zarif addressed diplomats and representatives of organizations from 33 countries having their Iftar (fast-breaking) meal at the residence of the Iranian ambassador.

The minister cited injustice as a factor which should unite Muslims “because Islam is not unique to one geography or region.”

“We belong to a religion which believes every human being is like all humanity and killing one human is like killing all humanity,” he said.

“We belong to a religion which considers the world as a united whole. It is not hard for Muslims to show to the world that their religion is a universal religion,” Zarif added.

“We follow a religion that can simply realize that if we don’t stand together, we will lose together. We need to be united so we can make a better future for our children,” he said.

Zarif said Muslims have to think globally and try to find new followers in the face of prevailing injustice.

“The most important injustice is the injustice being done to Palestine. Against attacks and violence, we have to minimize our differences,” he said.

Several Muslim countries are grappling with the threat of Takfiri militants who are wreaking havoc in Syria, Iraq and elsewhere. The problem has prompted the US and its allies to send troops and launch airstrikes in those countries.

Zarif arrived in Paris Tuesday at the head of a high-ranking delegation on the first leg of a two-nation European tour, which will also take him to the Netherlands.

He is about to meet with French President Francois Hollande as well as his counterpart Jean-Marc Ayrault, President of France’s National Assembly Claude Bartolone, and Senate President Gerard Larcher on Wednesday.

Zarif is also scheduled to address reporters and journalists and attend an exclusive interview with the Paris-based television news channel France 24.

Former French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius visited Tehran in July 2015 before Iranian President Hassan Rouhani traveled to Paris in January on a landmark trip.
