Iranian Security Forces Thwart Plot to Attack Military Bases

Iranian Force

“The suspects were arrested over the past two nights,” IRNA quoted Rahmani Fazli as saying.

“The terrorists had dug a 40-meter-long tunnel at a depth of 20 metres under a house to carry out explosions and terrorist attacks against the provincial bases of the Law Enforcement and the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC),” the Minister noted, as translated by IFP.

“40 members of the group, including their leaders, were captured in the operation,” he went on to say.

After searching the house, the security forces found a remote-controlled booby trap, weapons and ammunition, advanced digging equipment, and a map of the digging path leading to the bases, Tasnim quoted the Police as saying.

Most newspapers on Thursday covered the threatening message of Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani, who urged the country’s Atomic Energy Organization (AEOI) to prepare a plan for restoration of Iran’s nuclear program. Larijani harshly criticized the remarks made by the West and the UN and their violation of the nuclear deal, saying that Iran is left with no other way but to build enrichment facilities.

The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) recently disbanded a huge corruption network in the country’s banking system. The remarks made by the IRGC Commander Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari about the presence of politicians in the network were reported by many papers.

The formation of a third faction in the Iranian Parliament was also a top story today. The new faction is led by supporters of Larijani.

UN Chief Calls on World Powers to Make JCPOA Beneficial for Iranians

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon (AFP)
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon (AFP)

“I urge JCPOA participants to uphold their respective commitments and Member States to support the full and effective implementation of this agreement,” said Ban in a statement released on Wednesday, which coincides with the first anniversary of a UN Security Council resolution endorsing the nuclear deal.

“The JCPOA was a triumph of diplomacy… I applaud the dedication and determination shown on all sides,” he added.

The UN chief further called on the parties to the agreement to “uphold their respective commitments” and support its full and effective implementation.

The International Atomic Energy Agency has verified that Iran has carried out its commitments towards the historical deal, but the Islamic Republic complains that it still does not have access to global financial markets as part of the terms of the nuclear agreement. Many international banks still shy away from financing trade deals and processing transactions for fear of US penalties.

Ban’s latest statement was released just days after Iran, the US and Russia criticized the UN secretary general for a confidential report that said Iran’s ballistic missile launches “are not consistent with the constructive spirit” of the JCPOA, further urging Tehran to “refrain from conducting such ballistic missile launches since they have the potential to increase tensions in the region.”

Tehran has on various occasions asserted that the issue of Iran’s defense programs is clearly excluded from the nuclear agreement.

The JCPOA was reached between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries – the US, Britain, Russia, France, China, and Germany – on July 14, 2015, following some 23 months of intensive talks.

Under the deal, Iran agreed to limit its nuclear program and provide enhanced access to international atomic monitors in return for the termination of all nuclear-related sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

Iran Describes French Raids on Syria Village as “Against Int’l Norms”

Bahram Ghasemi- FM Spoksman

In a statement, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said the attacks were “unacceptable”, and added, “Bombing and killing innocent people, especially women and children, with any aim or under any pretext is unacceptable, condemned and against international norms.”

The statement came as Syria’s Foreign Ministry said French warplanes targeted the village of Tukhar near the city of Manbij in the province of Aleppo, killing at least 120 civilians.

The ministry added that scores of other civilians remain unaccounted for following the attack.

According to the ministry, the fatalities came a day after a US airstrike killed at least 20 civilians in Manbij.

Commander Highlights IRGC’s Military Preparedness

General jafari

The IRGC will hold multiple war games in the current Iranian year (ends on March 20, 2017) to maintain the military preparedness of the forces and send enemies the message that the forces are ready to bury them in the Persian Gulf waters, the senior commanders told reporters on Wednesday.

The commander further highlighted the level of safety and security in the country despite the critical situation in the region and developments in neighboring countries.

As regards the occasional capture of terrorists along the borders or inside the country, the general explained that only a portion of those arrested have been members of the Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group, while others were affiliated with anti-revolution groups.

The IRGC is vigilantly monitoring the situation and kills or arrests a number of ordinary elements of the anti-revolution groups every month in the country’s southeastern or northwestern areas, he added.

Back on June 13, troops from the IRGC Ground Force killed five members of the Party for Free Life in Kurdistan (PJAK) terrorist group in an ambush in Sardasht region in the northwestern province of West Azerbaijan.

And later on June 15, the IRGC forces killed a number of militants in clashes with two terrorist teams trying to intrude into Oshnavieh border area near the frontier with Iraq.

World Conference of Mayors and Councillors Kicks Off in Tehran

World Conference of Mayors

President Rouhani inaugurated the first ‘World Conference of Mayors and Councillors 2016’ with a focus on urban management, urban planning, tourism, crisis management and urban economics.

World Conference of MayorsThe conference aims at urban development, raising awareness about the latest scientific achievements and researches, solving the problems of urban traffic and air pollution, increasing interactions between institutions and governmental organizations and universities for the efficient use of modern science in the field of urban management, urban planning and urban sustainable development, Mehr reported.

Over 2,000 participants from more than 40 countries and international organizations from such countries as Spain, Germany, Denmark, Mexico and Turkey are taking part in this two-day event.

Mayors and city council members from Russia, India, Lebanon, Croatia, Turkey, and Guinea are also attending the conference.

In addition to President Rouhani, Iran’s Interior Minister, ICT Minister, Minister of Roads and Urban Development, foreign mayors and international investors also deliver speeches at the conference.

More than 100 authorities and international investors from Britain, the US, Italy, Switzerland, and South Korea, among others, will also hold panels in the Investment Negotiation Hall, Hamshahri daily newspaper reported.

Regional and Global Security Owes to General Soleimani

General Qassem Soleimani

According to a report by Mehr, Amir Abdollahian on Wednesday hailed the important role of General Soleimani in the fight against terrorism, and said, “Regional and global security in the fight against terrorism is indebted to the command of General Soleimani.”

Pointing to the remarks made by French representative at the United Nations Security Council against General Soleimani, Amir Abdollahian said the Islamic Republic of Iran is serious on the issue of providing the highest national security.

He went on to say that “within the framework of our beliefs and our constitution, we have chosen to support our allies in the region in the fight against terrorism.”

“General Soleimani as a noble and high-ranking commander with valuable experience in the fight against terrorists is of great help to the people and governments of Iraq and Syria and the region,” he added.

Iran’s actions in the fight against terrorism are part of the cost the Islamic Republic pays to promote regional and global security, he added.

Regional and global actors must appreciate Iran for the country’s sacrifices, the efforts and leadership in the fight against terrorism, which guarantee the establishment of security in the region and the whole world, Amir Abdollahian said, urging them to refrain from delivering such absurd statements.

Supporters of Terrorism Now Targeted by Extremists

Amir Abdollahian

“There is no doubt that beyond the developments in Syria and events in region, there is a triangle of the hegemonic system with the US overt and covert support, Israel’s actions and movements and terrorist acts, each contributing to the destabilization of and damage to the region,” he noted.

Despite the human and financial losses caused by the developments in Syria, Syrian political system is maintained and the triangle has failed to change the political structure of the country, Amir Abdollahian added.

“Today we see the countries that used terrorism as an instrument to achieve their wrong goals in Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Yemen and other countries in the region, are now the target of terrorism. Despite the pressures, the Axis of Resistance is the real winner,” Amir Abdollahian, a former deputy foreign minister, noted.

“The US and some countries in the region have not achieved any tangible success due to their wrong policies, but the region has suffered damages as a result of these policies.”

Israel behind Extinction of Caspian Sea Caviar

The Almas Caviar

An introduced or non-indigenous species, or simply an introduction, is a species living outside its native distributional range, which has arrived there by human activity, either deliberate or accidental. Non-native species can have various effects on the local ecosystem.

“Introduced species can disturb the ecosystem of an area,” Seyyed Jafar Mousavian, the Deputy Head of Intelligence and Operation Department at the Biological Headquarters of Civil Defence Organization, said in an interview with Mehr News Agency, as translated by IFP.

Some species can do more harm than good to an ecosystem, he noted.

He noted that Caspian seal, Kilka and Sevruga fish belong to the Caspian Sea; however, comb jellies are alien species that have come from the Atlantic Ocean.

beluga caviar“We firmly believe that the Zionist regime [Israel] is behind the conspiracy of nuisance species as they had sworn to do so,” Mousavi added.

Comb jellies are carnivorous creatures, hence a big threat for the food chain, growth, proliferation and natives species.

Planktons are the staple food of the Caspian Sea fish, he noted, adding that the amount of planktons of the largest enclosed inland body of water on Earth has dropped by alarming 75%, and therefore, we will face a crisis of food shortage for our native caviar fish.”

“Kilka is also a major food for sturgeons. The number of Kilkas caught in the Caspian Sea has decreased from 90,000 tons in 1979 to 20,000 tons in 2011. The huge decline in fishing shows that the number of Kilka fish is sharply decreasing.”

Almas CaviarMousavi went on to say that olive fruit fly is another type of unwelcomed species into the country that causes huge damages.

He described border controls by environmental organizations as a necessary preventive measure against migratory species and noted, “Civil Defence Organization plays an active, prominent role in protection from environment against nuisance species intruding from maritime, land and air borders.

He referred to biological agents as one of the root causes of environmental degradation.

Mousavi drew a link between civil defence and environmental protection, saying that, “Any environmental event that can inflict harm on human resources or vegetation, i.e. the degradation of environment, is described as a threat.”

He underlined that human, livestock, poultry, plants, food and pharmaceutical industry, environment and natural resources are the most vulnerable parts exposed to various threats.

Iranian Travel Agencies Banned from Sending Tourists to Turkey

Istanbul

According to a report by IRNA, as translated by IFP, Iran’s top tourism official Morteza Rahmani Movahhed announced on Wednesday, July 20, that Iranian travel agencies are not allowed to register or send tourists to Turkey following the recent developments and insecurity in Turkey.

“Any move against the order will be considered a violation, and the offending agencies will be prosecuted,” he went on to say.

“Since the conditions have yet to be normalized, the ban will be in place as long as the situation becomes normal,” he added.

Travels between Iran and Turkey were suspended on early Saturday, July 16, when a military coup launched by a faction in the Turkish armed forces created chaos in the country.

On Saturday morning, after a terrible night in Ankara and Istanbul, Iran’s Foreign Ministry called on nationals in Turkey, including residents or tourists, not to leave their places until further notice, avoid any gathering and heed warnings by the Turkish security officials.

In a separate statement on Sunday, Iran’s Road Maintenance and Transportation Organization announced that all border crossings with Turkey have been reopened and travels and transportation of vehicles have returned to normal.

For several hours overnight on Friday, violence shook Turkey’s two main cities, as the armed faction which tried to seize power blocked a bridge in Istanbul and strafed the headquarters of Turkish intelligence and parliament in Ankara.

At least 265 people were killed. An official said 161 of them were mostly civilians and police officers, while the remaining 104 were coup supporters.

Pilot Who Bombed Turkey’s Parliament Flees to Syria

666419_292

According to a report by Al-Khaleej Online, as covered by Alef, investigations into the failed coup found that the pilot and a number of his colleagues have handed themselves into to the Democratic Union Party (PYD).

The PYD is affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which is considered a terrorist organisation by the United States and the European Union as well as the Turkish government.

The Parliament was targeted with seven F-16 rockets on Friday night during the failed coup attempt. Some of the strikes were carried out during a parliamentary meeting.
