First Female Space Tourist, NASA Executive to Represent Iran at Oscars

farhadi

Farhadi, whose “The Salesman” is nominated for the foreign-language film Oscar, had announced several weeks ago that he would boycott the Oscars ceremony to protest US President Trump’s travel ban, even if exceptions were made to allow him entry to the US.

The film’s French producer, Alexandre Mallet-Guy, said in an email two days ago that he had decided not to attend the ceremony in solidarity with the director, and that nobody from the film would attend. He also said Farhadi would not be doing interviews if the film won.

farhadiThe decision to ask two prominent Iranian Americans with no ties to the film world to represent him during Sunday’s ceremony suggests that Farhadi intends to maintain a close rapport with the US, where “The Salesman” is currently on release via Cohen Media Group, Variety reported.

Farhadi’s publicist did not comment on the possibility that Mrs. Anousheh Ansari and Dr. Firouz Naderi would relay a statement from Mr. Farhadi, or whether a Skype link-up with Mr. Farhadi in Iran was a conceivable option in the event of an Oscar victory.

Why Turkey Is Ratcheting Up Anti-Iran Rhetoric

Years after King Abdullah II of Jordan coined the term “The Shiite Crescent” in 2004, now we are witnessing a new “labelling” campaign against Iran, this time launched by Turkey.

The campaign, however, comes at a time when resistance fronts are experiencing landmark turning points.

According to a Farsi report by Tasnim, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan spoke of the “Persianism” concept in a speech at the International Peace Institute in mid-February.

Referring to regional developments, Erdoğan expressed misgivings over Iran’s actions. He claimed that some people want both Syria and Iraq disintegrated.

He said there are those who are working toward the disintegration of Iraq where religious rifts and ethnic conflicts exist at the same time.

He said “Persian Nationalism” also exists there. In addition, he said, there exists secessionism which should be stopped.

A short time later, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, speaking at the Munich security conference, rehashed Erdoğan’s anti-Iran remarks with a different language. He said Iran is promoting Shiism in Syria and Iraq, and has created instability in the region with its actions

Since then, media affiliated with the Turkish government have used similar language and are promoting such language under different pretexts.

Yeniakit and Evrensel are among major state-run publications which promote “Pers milliyetçiliği” (Persian Nationalism). To people overseas, the concept means Iran is seeking to promote and rebuild the Persian Empire.

Objectives of King Abdullah II’s “Shiite Crescent” and Erdoğan’s “Persianism”

After Jordan’s King Abdulla II coined the term “The Shiite Crescent” in the region, we have been witnessing a new “labelling” campaign, this time on the “Iranophobia” front. However, the two anti-Iran stigmas have emerged at a time when the country has much more influence and power in the region than the past.

King Abdullah II coined the term in 2004 when the United States invaded Iraq and overthrew former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, Iran’s main enemy. Ever since, the governments which have taken power in Baghdad have been very close to Tehran.

Former Egyptian ruler Hosni Mubarak also used the same term again in 2006 when the Lebanese Hezbollah movement defeated Israel during the 33-day war. And it goes without saying that Hezbollah is Iran’s arm in the region.

Why are they creating the impression that “Persianism” is being promoted?

It is clear that “Shiaphobia” can no longer help promote “Iranophobia” because Shiites make up part of the populations in the region, including in Afghanistan, Turkey, the Azerbaijan Republic, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Bahrain, and people in the Middle East are not afraid of the term “Shiaphobia”.

Therefore, another word needed to be used which would not only encompass Iran, but frighten all regional nations. So, a term was cleverly used targeting a certain geographical area (where Iran is located) and a given ethnic group in the same region.

By taking a look at regional developments, one can find out why the Turkish president has coined a new term to promote Iranophobia at both regional and international levels. Once it was thought that developments in Syria coupled with the dream of getting Syrian President Bashar Assad toppled would benefit Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey. But now the very same developments are unfolding in favour of the Damascus government and regional resistance fronts, given the liberation of Aleppo, Syrian troops’ gains and the international community’s efforts to counter Takfiri terrorism and settle the Syria crisis.

This could be seen as yet another triumph for Iran and resistance forces following the 33-day war and the ouster of Saddam Hussein as well as the installation of an Iraqi government closely aligned with resistance forces in the country. It could also be regarded as a watershed in the history of resistance in the region.

Maybe that is why Erdoğan, who dreams of leading the Muslim world and the region, coined a term, as King Abdullah II did, when he realized his dream had shattered. This way, Erdoğan was able to express part of his concern over the situation in the region changing in favour of Iran.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi had responded to that: “Those who cherish the pious hope of returning to an empire, commit interventionist, illegal and illegitimate acts, support terrorist groups, trigger bloodshed and fuel tension and instability in the region, cannot dodge responsibility for these actions by playing a blame game.”

Iranian Delegation Confers with Saudis on 2017 Hajj Pilgrimage

iran-saudi

The meeting co-chaired by Caretaker of Iran’s Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization Hamid Mohammadi and Saudi Minister of Hajj and Umrah Mohammed Saleh bin Taher Bentin was held in Jeddah on Thursday evening.

During the two-hour negotiation, Mohammadi explained about the Islamic Republic of Iran’s stances and expectations from the Saudi side and stressed the need to preserve the rights of the Iranian Hajj pilgrims.

The Saudi Hajj minister, for his part, briefed the Iranian side on his ministry’s plans for holding the forthcoming Hajj and expressed the hope that this year’s Hajj ritual would be held with Iranians in attendance.

More than 1.8 million faithful took part in the 2016 Hajj, but Iranians stayed at home after tensions between Riyadh and Tehran boiled over following a deadly stampede during the 2015 pilgrimage.

On September 2, 2015, thousands of people lost their lives in a deadly crush after Saudi authorities blocked a road in Mina during a ritual, forcing large crowds of pilgrims to collide.

The crush was the deadliest incident in the history of the pilgrimage. According to an Associated Press count based on official statements from the 36 countries that lost citizens in the disaster, more than 2,400 pilgrims were killed in the incident.

Saudi Arabia claims nearly 770 people were killed in the incident, but officials at Iran’s Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization say about 4,700 people, including over 460 Iranian pilgrims, lost their lives.

Majority of Americans ‘Embarrassed’ by Trump!

usa

Fifty-eight percent of respondents use the word “embarrassed” to describe how they feel about Trump’s first month in office, according to a McClatchy-Marist poll released Thursday.

Only 33 percent say Trump’s actions so far make them feel proud.

Nearly half of Americans, 49 percent, disapprove of the job Trump is doing, while 41 percent approve.

Trump is seen in a negative light overall, with only 38 percent of Americans viewing the new president favorably. A majority, 54 percent, have an unfavorable opinion of Trump.

More than half of those surveyed also believe that at least one of Trump’s actions as president has been either illegal or unethical.

Some are concerned about Trump’s potential conflict of interest with his business interests in foreign countries.

“He is generating benefit to his enterprise,” said Matt Boyer, a think tank researcher from North Carolina. “The rest of the executive branch can’t participate in this behavior.”

A Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday puts Trump’s approval rating at only 38 percent, the lowest since he took office on January 20.

“President Donald Trump’s popularity is sinking like a rock,” said Tim Malloy, an assistant director with Quinnipiac.

“He gets slammed on honesty, empathy, level-headedness, and the ability to unite. And two of his strong points, leadership and intelligence, are sinking to new lows,” he added.

Since his inauguration, Trump has faced nearly non-stop protests and rallies condemning his divisive rhetoric and controversial immigration policy.

A Tour of Art Galleries in Tehran

These days, dozens of galleries in Tehran are open to the art lovers. Among them, IFP has chosen five in its report:

A Review of Iranian Modern Art Pioneers

The exhibition “A review of Iranian modern art pioneers” is underway in the Art Centre galleries. It displays the art of different Iranian regions.

Actually, the paintings by Mohammad-Ali Taraqijah (1943-2010) have been put on display there. The art of Tarqijah was internationally displayed for the first time in the International Art Exhibition of Basel, Switzerland, in 1978.

No land, gravity or density is seen in his paintings: all is free and weightless. Many artists recognise Taraqijah for his poetic style and abstract horses.

He died in 2010, shortly after a successful art exhibition in Switzerland.

The Red

“The Red” is an exhibition of painting, size and installation art by Iranian pioneer painters. It is being held in Negar gallery on the occasion of its first establishment anniversary.

Golden Nocturnes

The calligraphy paintings of Abbas Rahimi, titled “Golden Nocturnes”, are being exhibited in Taraneh-Baran Art Gallery. He is the first Iranian to draw by calligraphy. The magnificent verses of great Iranian poets are depicted in his art.

His calligraphic art is different from others in that he has just used colour, and not ink, in his works.

Unveiling the Essence of Body

Seyhoun Art Gallery is displaying 30 of Rahim Mowlaeian’s paintings, entitled “Unveiling the Essence of Body”.

Inspired by Iranian miniature, this experienced artist depicts women as the permanent, inseparable part of his art. Rather than focusing on their sexuality, Mowlaeian portrays women in a sociological, psychological and philosophical context; in a surreal space surrounded by colours and backgrounds.

The art of Mowlaeian has been displayed in more than 100 solo and group exhibitions, and sold at four international auctions in New York City, Iran, Switzerland, and China.

Be My Mirror

“Be My Mirror” is an exhibition of Jamshid Bayrami’s photography in Shirin Gallery.

Born in 1961 in Tehran, Bayrami has won many photography awards, including the France Press photo contest’s second place in 1997.

Iran to Hold Talks with GCC If Riyadh Is Not Final Decision Maker

Iran’s negotiations with the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states does not mean the Islamic Republic approves of their behaviours, Iranian lawmaker Majid Nasserinejad said, according to a Farsi report by ICANA.

“Islamic Republic of Iran has always been following strategies based on wisdom, goodwill and honour, as taught by the Holy Quran. That said, we aren’t essentially against the negotiations,” he said, referring to the call by GCC states for collaboration with Tehran.

“Some redlines must not be crossed, though,” he stressed. “If the GCC’s policies depend on what it earns by lobbying the Zionists, it is not acceptable for Iran to collaborate with this Council.”

He went on to say that the GCC is unlikely to forget about its past anti-Iran positions, as it has issued many statements against the country.

“We will engage in talks with the GCC just on the condition that Saudi Arabia is not the final decision maker of the council. The majority of region’s current problems are caused by the policies adopted by Riyadh.”

Yemen’s Al-Qaeda Grabs Saudi Coalition’s Weapons

Al-Qaeda

“A huge number of arms, ammunitions and missiles, sent to the Saudi coalition for attacking Yemen, has been grabbed by Al-Qaeda terrorists,” announced a local source, according to a Farsi report by Al-Alam.

The weapons were sent from Ma’rib to arrive in Ta’iz, Yemen, when it was stolen by them.”

It is alleged that some notable Saudi mercenary leaders in Yemen, who are connected to Al-Qaeda, had plotted to snatch the trucks carrying the weapons.

Al-Qaeda terrorists have managed to boost their presence in Yemen thanks to the Saudi-led coalition’s campaign against the Houthi Ansarullah movement.

Iran to Allocate $100m to Crisis-Hit Khuzestan

pollution Khuzestan

“Following the statements of the Leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution on February 20 and his call for urgent action on crisis in southern provinces, the Parliament’s Energy Commission organised a meeting on February 21 about the short-term, mid-term and long-term proposals to deal with the problems of Khuzestan,” said the Iranian lawmaker Fereydoun Hassanvand.

According to a Farsi report by ICANA, he went on to say that “to cope with the water and power crises and other problems in Khuzestan, we considered the urgent allocation of $100m from the National Development Fund for 2017.

“Ali Larijani, the Parliament Speaker, promised to apply for the Leader’s permission if necessary.”

During the meeting, members of the Parliament’s Energy Commission and representatives of Khuzestan province conferred on the crisis with ministers of oil and energy, the head of Iran’s Environment Department, the head of Passive Defence Organization, and the head of National Disaster Management Organization.

“The allocation of 2% of Iran’s oil incomes to oil-rich provinces was another plan proposed with the aim of improving their infrastructures, environment and water and power networks,” he added.

“3% of revenues by oil and gas contracts are already allotted to the development of oil-rich regions’ infrastructures,” Hassanvand noted.

Iranian Delegation in Saudi Arabia for Hajj Talks

Hajj

The Iranian delegation is in Saudi Arabia for talks on possible resumption of the dispatch of Iranian pilgrims to the annual Hajj pilgrimage.

Iran decided to stop sending pilgrims to Hajj over security concerns after two deadly incidents claimed the lives of more than 470 Iranian pilgrims during the 2015 Hajj rituals.

Now, Iranian minister of culture and Islamic guidance says the country will send pilgrims to this year’s Hajj rituals if Saudi Arabia accepts the Islamic Republic’s conditions.

Reza Salehi-Amiri said on the sidelines of a cabinet session on Wednesday that Iran has sent a delegation to Saudi Arabia to follow up on the issue of Hajj for Iranian pilgrims, Press TV reported.

“The Iranian administration will try to dispatch pilgrims [to Saudi Arabia],” he said, stressing that Iran seeks to “send pilgrims to the Grand Mosque… [for the upcoming Hajj rituals] only if Saudi Arabia accepts our conditions.”

Amiri added that the Islamic Republic had sent a letter to the Saudi minister of Hajj and Umrah, enumerating the country’s conditions, including the issues of security and blood money for the families of the pilgrims who lost their lives in a deadly human crush in Mina near the holy city of Mecca in 2015.

If Iran’s conditions are not accepted by the Saudi side, “Saudi Arabia will be held accountable,” the Iranian minister added.

Iraq Raps Efforts by Turkey, Arab States to Stall Mosul’s Liberation

Mosul’s Liberation

Distinguished Iraqi statesman and active civil rights campaigner Mowaffak Baqer al-Rubaie has, in an interview with Iraqi al-Etejah news channel, stressed that efforts are underway by Turkey as well as a number of the neighbouring countries to stop operations to liberate Mosul from the ISIS terrorist group.

These efforts are based on tendentious rumour spreading, causing political tumult in the country and creating conflict among Iraqi political groups, he noted, according to Farsi report by Irdiplomacy.ir.

Rubaie, who used to be the Iraqi government’s national security advisor and the head of the country’s State of Law Coalition, said the Iraqi forces’ decisive victory in the liberation operations in the eastern Mosul has shocked these malevolent forces and, thus, led to a reduction in their activities.

Nevertheless, he added, these activities have not stopped.

He stressed that Turkey and a number of Arab states are afraid of Iraq’s increased power and, thus, resumption of its natural role in the region, lest the country’s democracy prove successful.

The Iraqi forces’ victories worry these countries, as they restore the Iraqi nation’s trust in the country’s army, he noted, adding, this would leave no room for them to meddle in Iraq’s domestic affairs.
