How Israeli Media Covered Iran Leader’s Remarks in Palestine Conference

leader3

According to a report by IFP, the sixth International Conference on Palestine Intifada was held in Tehran on February 21 and 22. Attended by more than 700 participants from 70 countries, the two-day conference was kicked off with a speech by Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, the Leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution.

The Palestine conference provoked wide reactions among the international media, the Israelis in particular, which mostly focused on the statements of Ayatollah Khamenei at the opening ceremony.

Reuters was one of the first international media to quote the statements of Iran’s Leader in the first day of conference. In an article titled “Iran Supreme Leader calls on Palestinians to pursue intifada against Israel”, Reuters also wrote about the Israeli Prime Minister’s efforts to attract the support of new US administration for further severe actions against Iran.

By highlighting the need to comprehensively support the resistance groups, and inviting the Islamic countries to unite behind the common ideology of Palestine, Iran hugely worried the Zionist Regime of Israel that has been taking advantage of conflicts between the Middle East’s Islamic countries in recent years.

In a commentary titled “Iran’s supreme leader backs ‘holy intifada’ to destroy ‘cancerous’ Israel”, the Jerusalem-based online newspaper Times of Israel expressed concerns over Iran’s support of Palestine, and wrote, “Calling Israel a ‘cancerous tumor’, Iran’s supreme leader on Tuesday expressed support for a ‘holy intifada’ to eradicate the Jewish state, arguing that the international community is headed toward confrontation with the ‘Zionist regime’.”

Haaretz newspaper also reacted to the Palestine conference, pointing to Iran Leader’s remarks on the vitality of support for Palestinian resistance forces, as well as the statements of Ali Larijani, Iranian Parliament speaker, and the attendance of Salim al-Zaanun, a member of Fatah’s central committee, in the conference.

Arutz Sheva, a fanatic Zionist-supported Israeli network, wrote, “Iran’s spiritual leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, called for the ‘complete Liberation of Palestine’ on Tuesday, and slammed the Jewish state as a ‘cancerous tumor’,” in an article titled “Ayatollah: We will liberate ‘Palestine’, remove cancer of Israel”.

Ayatollah Khamenei’s emphasis on the complete liberation of Palestine, and denial of the Western conciliatory approaches to the issue of Palestine also attracted the attention of regional and international media.

Middle East Online said in the title of an article that the Leader of Iran “backs ‘complete liberation’ of Palestine”; and AFP wrote, “Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called on Tuesday for the ‘complete liberation’ of Palestine from the ‘tumor’ of Israel, renewing his regime’s refusal to recognize Israel’s right to exist.”

Iran’s Rivals Trying to Influence Trump’s Foreign Policy

Reza Nasri, a Geneva-based Iranian expert in international law, said in a Farsi interview with Iran newspaper that countries in the Middle East have benefited from a lack of relations between Tehran and Washington for years, and now that Trump does not seem to have a specific foreign policy, Iran’s regional rivals are trying to influence his approach towards the Islamic Republic.

Here are excerpts of his remarks in this interview:

Differences between Iran and the United States have benefited regional countries both economically and strategically. In addition to having strategic advantages, the continuation of years-long sanctions on Iran has contributed heavily to their economy and trade as well.

That is why whenever Iran and the US get into a diplomatic relationship and whenever the trend of talks between the two countries is likely to result in amelioration and normalisation of bilateral ties, Iran’s regional rivals use all tools and levers available to them to disrupt that trend.

At least during the course of nuclear negotiations between Iran and the P5+1 group, we saw how rival countries in the region, especially Saudi Arabia and the Israeli regime, sought to keep the talks from kicking off, and later on, tried to push the negotiations into failure.

In last Sunday’s security conference in Munich, the other rival of Iran in the region, namely Turkey, started launching a propaganda campaign and war of words against the Islamic Republic. That can’t be unrelated to what was said earlier. They know if Iran and the GOP, which has taken the helms of the White House and Congress, sit down for talks to settle some of the outstanding issues between the two sides, then they (Iran’s rivals) will lose their last card to stoke tension between Tehran and Washington.

In other words, in the post-JCPOA era, rival countries in the region consider the Republican Party the last option on the table to contain Iran. So, they try to wreck any possibility for talks between Iran and Washington hardliners.

Of course these countries are right to have misgivings. They have not yet been able to deduce a clear foreign policy on Iran from his endless ambiguous statements, populist slogans and cabinet line-up. Therefore, they are trying to sway the new US administration’s policy on Iran.

Some of Trump’s positions and remarks regarding the JCPOA have led many analysts to believe that the US president’s criticism of the nuclear deal is not basically due to security and strategic concerns, but rather because the agreement has had far fewer economic gains for American companies than European firms. Trump has said time and again that after legal restrictions were removed following the conclusion of the nuclear deal between Iran and world powers, the Airbus Company had a bigger share of the Iranian market than the American Boeing. He has also mentioned that released Iranian assets have been mostly used to purchase products from countries that are the United States’ rivals. All these have contributed to the analysts’ assumption.

In other words, rival countries believe if Tehran and Washington hold talks during the tenure of the Trump administration, the negotiations are likely to result in the lifting of primary sanctions against Tehran. That means the only remaining legal obstacle to the normalisation of economic and trade ties between Iran and the US would be removed.

That is why many of them are seeking to launch propaganda campaigns like what we witnessed in the Munich conference in a bid to prevent a possible dialogue between the two countries.

Given the above-mentioned considerations and the strategic calculations of rival countries, the question is what policy on the US would benefit Iran most: To get a détente process started, with the US political apparatus at play, in order to secure a big deal and finally reach a regional agreement, or to continue confrontation with Washington with all its merits and demerits.

Syrian Rebels Seek ‘Direct Negotiations’ with Assad’s Government

“We ask for direct negotiations … It would save time and be proof of seriousness instead of negotiating in [separate] rooms,” Salem al-Meslet, spokesman for the High Negotiations Committee (HNC) umbrella group, told the AFP news agency.

The talks are due to begin on Thursday morning.

During three previous rounds of talks in Geneva last year, the two sides never sat down at the same table, instead leaving UN mediator Staffan de Mistura to shuttle between them.

Iranian President Visiting Crisis-Hit Province in Southwest

Rouhani

In his one-day visit to the provincial capital of Ahvaz, President Rouhani is expected to issue a series of orders to address the environmental problems and allocate funds for infrastructural projects in the province.

The trip comes a few days after Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei deplored the “heartrending” problems of Khuzestan, calling on officials to devise plans and mobilize efforts to find a decisive solution to the problems that have afflicted the province, including flooding, dust pollution and blackouts.

“The officials are duty-bound to address these problems; and if somebody cares about the people, they could not be indifferent to Khuzestan’s hardships; and it is a certain, immediate and permanent duty of governments to care about people,” the Leader said on Monday.

As regards the problem of dust pollution that has gripped the southern provinces for years, Ayatollah Khamenei called on officials to stop putting the blame on previous administrations, saying inaction at the present time will make the posterity make the same judgement about the current officials.

Iranians in the western and southwestern provinces that border Iraq are facing a growing trend in the influx of fine particles generated by drought-hit marshlands in neighboring countries.

The disruptive dust storms push pollution in those border areas to alarming levels, raising health concerns.

The particles, carried by winds, can penetrate the lung and enter the bloodstream, causing serious diseases such as lung cancer, asthma and heart problems.

Muslim States Urged to Close Embassies in US If Trump Moves Embassy to Jerusalem

International conference on Palestinian Intifada
6th International conference on Palestinian Intifada

The closing statement of the sixth International conference “To support the Palestinian Intifada” held in Tehran stressed that the US administration’s intention to move the Zionist entity capital into Al-Quds [Jerusalem] must draw a response from the Arab and Muslim states by closing their embassies in the United States.

It further highlighted the importance of the Palestinian cause, calling on supporting it and avoiding marginalising it amid the regional crises.

The statement also hailed the Lebanese and Palestinian resistance movements, stressing their role in confronting the Zionist entity.

It also called on the international organisations to denounce and deter the Israeli aggressions, warning some Arab and Muslim countries against normalizing ties with the Zionist entity.

Finally, the statement highly appreciated the Iranian people sacrifices for the sake of the Palestinian cause, Al Manar reported.

The Iranian capital, Tehran, hosted on Tuesday and Wednesday an international forum in support of the Palestinian cause, with hundreds of foreign guests, including senior Palestinian leaders and officials of Muslim nations, in attendance.

The average direct flight from Singapore to Sydney takes about eight and a half hours; however, Netanyahu’s total flight time was just over 11 hours as his flight path dodged Indonesia’s airspace.

A source in Netanyahu’s delegation confirmed the route to the Guardian.

The flight was operated by El Al, the flag carrier of Israel that is disallowed from venturing into the airspace of many Muslim nations, including Pakistan.

Iran Understands Turkey’s Predicament: Leader’s Adviser

Ali Akbar Velayati, an international adviser to the Leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, said Iran understands Turkey’s situation, as it is still grappling with the consequences of the coup attempt of July 2016, and has not achieved any of its objectives in Syria.

They had predicted they would manage to get to the old city of Damascus and say their [first] prayer in the [city’s] Umayyad Mosque, he noted.

“None of their expectations and excessive demands have been met, and will ever be realized. The Syrian nation and government are the eventual winners,” he noted, according to a Farsi report by IRNA.

On remarks made by Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir at the 53rd Munich Security Conference, he said the Saudi FM is used to making unfounded claims.

“We are used to his baseless and unwise statements and do not pay attention to them.”

Urging the Saudi Arabian foreign minister to concentrate on his own country’s interests, Velayati stressed that Saudi Arabia will definitely sustain losses in the future due to its foreign minister, who is a threat to the country’s foreign relations, and his baseless remarks.

He added the Islamic Republic of Iran is present in Iraq and Syria and is providing the two countries with advisory assistance at the official invitation of the two states’ incumbent governments.

Velayati stressed, “Those who have entered these countries without any permission or invitation are invaders and must leave these states. They either leave the countries themselves or will be thrown out of them by the Iraqi and Syrian people.”
