Iranian Aide Rules out Foul Play in Rafsanjani’s Death

hashemi rafsanjani

Gholam-Ali Rajaee, one of the close associates of demised Rafsanjani, has reacted to the propaganda campaign launched by some foreign media outlets which have tried to create the impression that Rafsanjani’s death was suspicious.

“How dare they say the [Iranian] Establishment was behind Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani’s death,” said Rajaee, according to a Farsi report by Khabar Online.

He asked why the Islamic Republic of Iran should want to remove one of its best people, adding that some individuals want to fish in troubled waters.

Rajaee reiterated that Ayatollah Hashemi died of a cardiac arrest and that his popularity was quite obvious from his funeral which had drawn large numbers of people who had come to pay homage to that great man.

Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani needn’t be canonized or his prominent personality be aggrandised. He said Rafsanjani was a great character who can be neither demonized nor celebrated through propaganda. Even if the whole world wants to humiliate or canonise a person, it can’t, he noted.

He added that Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani was trusted by people as well as the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and the late Imam Khomeini.

Rajaee referred to the letters that Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani wrote to the late Imam Khomeini, and said the late Ayatollah always consulted with the late founder of the Islamic Republic.

Rajaee also described the late Ayatollah as a symbol of hope. He said Hashemi Rafsanjani was tortured when he was in prison during the despotic Pahlavi regime, and was about to be executed.

Unfortunately, he noted, Iranians trust the word of mouth and believe whatever gossip and lies they hear. According to Rajaee, Hashemi Rafsanjani had evidence which could neutralise a smear campaign launched against him and his children.

However, he added, the late Ayatollah did not want to tarnish the image of any institution, so he remained silent.

UAE Official Calls Iran ‘Meddlesome Country’

Anwar Gargash

The UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Gargash has, in a Twitter post, accused Iran of interfering in the domestic affairs of the regional states.

In his post, he said Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammad Javad Zarif has invited the Persian Gulf littoral states to hold regional dialogues, adding if he wants the talks to be serious, his country has to stop meddling in the domestic affairs of regional states.

According to a Farsi report by ISNA, Zarif has called for organising a set of meetings to hold regional talks with the governments of the Persian Gulf littoral states.

Such claims come as Iranian officials have repeatedly stressed that Iran is a country which is willingly and resolutely contributing to establishing peace and ensuring stability in the entire region.

Iran plays a constructive role in the region. Accusing Iran of intervention in other countries’ affairs is an act of psychological projection. Some think that by placing the blame on other countries, they can duck their responsibilities and avoid their problems.

Farsi Added to Turkish Education Ministry’s Curriculum

Education

Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency has reported that the cabinet decision about usable languages in formal and non-formal educational institutions in Turkey was issued in the Official Gazette on Feb. 22.

Revisions to the country’s national curriculum sparked debate after the Education Ministry on Jan. 13 published a draft curriculum covering 51 compulsory classes taught in elementary, middle and high schools. The ministry also established a platform in which citizens could leave comments and make suggestion on Jan. 15.

The program for the upcoming academic year, to begin in September 2017, caused particular controversy over the reduced profile of the founder of the Republic of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, in lesson materials as well as the removal of evolution theory from biology classes.

‘Referendum Only Solution to Palestine Issue’

amir-abdolahian21

Hossein Amir Abdollahian, the secretary general of an international conference on support for the Palestinian Intifada, has, in a Farsi interview with Al-Alam, elaborated on the different dimensions of the event held in the Iranian capital, Tehran.

Here are excerpts from his remarks in this interview:

The 6th International Conference on Palestinian Intifada is underway in Tehran, marking the centenary of the release of the Balfour Declaration and the 70th anniversary of the division of Palestine as well as the 50th anniversary of the occupation of al-Quds, the first Qibla of world Muslims. So, historically speaking, the conference coincides with three landmark occasions.

Regionally and internationally speaking, two pressing issues on Palestine are at hand. One is the normalisation of relations between some countries and the Israeli regime in both covert and overt domains. The second issue is that some American officials, even President Donald Trump, have reiterated their unflinching support for the Israeli regime and spoken of a plan to transfer the US embassy from Tel Aviv to al-Quds [Jerusalem].

The event is held at a time when, in addition to the above-mentioned issues, foreign interference and Israeli machinations coupled with acts of terror in the region have caused an unstable and critical situation in parts of the Muslim world and prompted efforts by some foreign intelligence services to fuel divisions between Shiites and Sunnis.

Presence of Prominent Figures and Parliamentary Delegations

The participants in the conference are parliamentary delegations from Islamic and Arab countries as well as some non-Islamic states in Latin America. Overall, the two-day conference brings together over 500 foreign guests to exchange views on ways of supporting Palestinians.

Key Topics at the Conference

High on the agenda are the issue of countering the continued construction of Jewish settlements in occupied territories, stopping the Zionisation of al-Quds, reviewing different political, movement-based, resistance and parliamentary plans as well as the issue of NGO’s and non-governmental groups. The delegates are discussing how they can assist Palestinians and help halt Israeli hostilities. They are also discussing how it is possible to deflect some countries’ attention from local and ethnic conflicts by focusing on the issue of Palestine and al-Quds.

Referendum in the Political Arena; Resistance on the Ground

The reality is that referendum is a solution in the political arena, and that the Palestine issue will not be settled without focusing on resistance. Resistance by Hamas, Islamic Jihad and other Palestinian groups in Gaza has kept the Zionist regime of Israel from achieving its goals in wars. Likewise, resistance by Hezbollah during the 2006 Lebanon-Israel war secured the liberation of areas in south Lebanon occupied by Israel. Therefore, the only way to counter Israel’s ambitions is resistance. Iran has explicitly put forward numerous ideas in order to reinforce resistance. Tehran itself has, loud and clear, announced its support for resistance both in occupied Palestine and in the region. In fact, Iran has practical proposals, both at the political level and on the ground, on helping settle the Palestine issue.

Why Is Palestine Important to Iran?

Iran regards Palestine as one of the key issues in the region due to different reasons. First, ideologically speaking, Quds was Muslims’ first Qibla. Second, ethically speaking, the Palestinian people are oppressed. Zionists have had Palestinian territories under occupation for 70 years now and continue to grab more Palestinian land. And the third reason is a political one. Iran, under its Constitution, has announced clearly that it will whole-heartedly defend all oppressed peoples around the world if they ask for help. To that end, we have taken all necessary measures. All measures we adopt are in line with international law. Within that framework, we will continue our strong support for the Palestinian resistance. We believe the Palestinian resistance has not only not been undermined, but is growing and burgeoning in the region.

Palestinian Groups Should Band Together

Iran believes all Palestinian leaders and groups should remain united. We are of the conviction that with a view to resistance against Israeli aggression, it is possible to help resolve the Palestine issue. In the meantime, Palestinian groups should set aside their differences and follow up their issues through cooperation and rapport.

Israel Cannot Wage another War

Israeli authorities may make some threats in their statements, but they do not have what it takes to launch a war in the region. Israeli officials are grappling with numerous internal problems on the one hand, and are not strong enough to stand up to the Palestinian resistance on the other. So, the concept that “Israel poses a threat to the region” is correct in the general sense, but the Palestinian resistance will not allow Israel to launch a military operation and emerge victorious.

Iran to Sell Crude Oil to Russia: Minister

Zanganeh

The deal, to be signed in the following weeks, would provide Iran with an opportunity to find new customers, Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh said, briefing his meeting with visiting Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak.

“During the meeting, we agreed to hold a workshop in Moscow over the next few weeks on the new model of Iranian oil contracts,” he said, Press TV reported.

Russia has expressed willingness to cooperate with Iran for long-term regulation of the country’s oil market.

Azerbaijan’s President Appoints Wife as First VP

Azerbaijan’s President

Tuesday’s appointment of Mehriban Aliyeva follows constitutional changes made after a tightly-managed referendum last year that introduced the powerful position of first vice president, the second most senior official in the country.

Aliyeva, 52, has been an MP for the ruling Yeni Azerbaijan party since 2005 and head of the influential Heydar Aliyev Foundation – named after her father-in-law and former president, Al Jazeera reported.

Born into the powerful Pashayev family, Aliyeva has sometimes been seen as a possible successor to her husband, who took over in 2003 after the death of his father Heydar, a former KGB officer and Communist-era boss.

Iranian President’s Regional Visits May Backfire

Rouhani

Although recent regional visits — to Kuwait and Oman — by Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani are indicative of the country’s goodwill and determination to establish cordial relations with the Middle Eastern and Persian Gulf littoral states, they can also serve the intentions and objectives of the members of the [Persian] Gulf Cooperation Council ([P]PGCC), particularly Saudi Arabia, given their security moves and measures during the past month, such as the inauguration of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) office in Kuwait in late January.

According to a Farsi report by Tabnak news website, recent visits by Kuwaiti officials to Tehran which were, later, reciprocated by President Rouhani, irrespective of what is going on offstage, are very important in one aspect, as a closer look at them clearly explains the reason why some states currently attach great importance to reciprocal moves aimed at creating tension in the Middle East region.

Rouhani’s trips to Kuwait and Oman can, perhaps from a wider point of view, be interpreted as joint efforts to relieve tensions and foster more friendly relations in the region. President Rouhani’s trip to Kuwait, which was made in response to the visit of Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah al-Khalid al-Hamad al-Sabah to Tehran, showed Iran’s resolve to further forge ties with its southwestern neighbour.

Nevertheless, regardless of their objectives, these visits and efforts — to develop closer relations — will be in no way in Iran’s favour as they would fail to shift the balance of power towards Iran in the region, in case the security moves and measures initiated and taken, respectively, by the Persian Gulf littoral states over the past 30 days as well as their consequences and outcomes turn out to be what they are actually anticipated to be.

Two scenarios unfold about the military moves and security measures by [P]GCC countries:

First Scenario

NATO Office

On January 24, Jens Stoltenberg, NATO’s Norwegian secretary-general, arrived in Kuwait to open the organization’s new office in the country.

Speaking at the centre’s inauguration ceremony in Kuwait, Stoltenberg said, “It (the office) will be a vital hub for cooperation between the alliance and our [Persian] Gulf partners.”

The centre has been set up to provide the Persian Gulf littoral states with military assistance by holding advanced training courses in areas including weapons proliferation, energy security, cyber defence as well as chemical, biological and nuclear attacks.

The NATO centre in Kuwait City was established based on the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative (ICI) launched by NATO leaders in 2004 with the aim of improving security ties and cooperation with the Middle East countries, particularly the Persian Gulf Littoral states.

Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the UAE are all ICI members. The remaining two [P]GCC states — Saudi Arabia and Oman — also plan to join ICI.

Addressing the same ceremony, Stoltenberg added, “We face common security threats like terrorism, weapons proliferation and cyber-attacks. And we share the same aspirations for peace and for stability. So it is essential that we work more closely together than before.”

Second Scenario

The second scenario pertains to a report published a little while ago by The Wall Street Journal which said the Trump administration is in talks with Arab allies about having them form a kind of quasi-NATO military alliance in the region, that would share intelligence with Israel to help counter Iran.

The alliance would include countries such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE that are avowed enemies of Israel as well as Egypt and Jordan, which have longstanding peace treaties with Israel. Other Arab countries could also join the alliance.

For the Arab countries involved, the alliance would have a NATO-style mutual-defence component under which an attack on one member would be treated as an attack on all. However, the US and Israel would assume a logistic role offering military and intelligence support to the alliance.

In their negotiations with the Trump administration members in the past two weeks, the Saudi and Emirati officials praised Israel’s security and intelligence capabilities and, implicitly, agreed to, in case of forming the coalition, share intelligence with the Zionist regime.

Key to Recent Visits’ Puzzle

The opening of the NATO office in Kuwait is not a security threat against Iran per se, as its goals and mechanism are based on providing training and promoting intelligence cooperation. Nevertheless, the Persian Gulf littoral states have always had a glance at Iran. In addition, prior to this, NATO has had military operation centres in Iran’s proximity.

The report by The Wall Street Journal has, nevertheless, a totally different story. In case it is true and such a coalition is created in the Persian Gulf, undoubtedly, Iran would be its main target. The alliance will definitely disturb the regional power balance in a way which would fail to be in Iran’s favour. In other words, in case Yemen is perceived as the current battlefield between Tehran and Riyadh, then, the ground would already be completely prepared for an all-out war between Iran and the members of the coalition.

This, of course, requires a more serious and comprehensive analysis, as the security aftershocks of such a war will have enormous impacts on the present powers of the Middle East and will even shake Russia and China.

Regional trends and developments have, so far, been positive for Iran in terms of security. Nonetheless, a shift in the trends would be what Saudi Arabia deeply desires to take place. The recent remarks by Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir, in which he expressed optimism and hope towards the challenges ahead in the region, are a witness to this.

Trump has created a pleasant atmosphere in the region for Saudi Arabia, which is, apparently, an opportunity the country would not easily miss.

President Rouhani’s regional visits — which, most probably, will continue in the future through other channels, however, can either serve as a brake to slow or stop the fierce military-security competition, which has already begun in the Persian Gulf, or give clear signals to Saudi Arabia indicating Iran’s regional objectives, intentions and policies, preventing any likely miscalculations by Riyadh in its future plans.

Iranian Teams Held by Saudi, Emirati Rivals in ACL

Persepolis of Iran and Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal football teams shared points in Group D of the AFC Champions League on Tuesday.

In the match held in Muscat’s Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex, Mohsen Mosalman’s low shot from outside the area looked to hand the Iranian side what would have been a victory against the run of play.

However, Carlos Eduardo’s header saw Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal secure a point in 80th minute in a dramatic 1-1 draw against Persepolis.

“I think it was the match of the ACL first week. Persepolis and Al Hilal played well in this match. I am satisfied with the way my players played in this game,” Persepolis coach Branko Ivankovic said, as reported by Tasnim.

AFC Champions Leagu

Iran’s Zob Ahan was also held to a 1-1 draw by the UAE’s Al Ain in Group C of the AFC Champions League.

Jerry Bengtson gave the Iranians the lead against the run of play in the 57th minute when he slid in to score from close range after Al Ain had failed to turn their dominance into goals.

Ismail Ahmed rescued a point for last year’s AFC Champions League runner-up in the 76th minute at Hazza bin Zayed Stadium on Tuesday.

“I am satisfied with the result and I am sure this one point will help us in the rest of the competitions. I am proud of my young players in the match against Al Ain,” Zob Ahan coach Mojtaba Hosseini said in the post-match news conference.
