Four Newly-Purchased ATR Planes Land in Tehran

Iran Air took delivery of its first four ATR 72-600s on Tuesday in a ceremony in Toulouse, France. The planes have just landed in Tehran’s Mehrabad Airport, according to media reports.

The delivery of these planes officially triggers a transaction that includes a firm order for 20 of the Franco-Italian turborprops and options for a further 20. The contract calls for deliveries of the 20 airplanes on firm order to extend until the end of 2018.

With the transaction, ATR becomes the second Western supplier to deliver airliners to Iran Air since implementation of the nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers in 2016.

Airbus delivered Iran Air’s first A321 narrowbody on January 11 and has since sent an A330-200 and another A321 under the terms of a contract covering 46 A320-family jets, 38 A330s and 16 A350s, Ain Online reported.

Boeing, meanwhile, has yet to deliver an airplane from an order announced last December that calls for delivery of fifty 737 Max 8s, fifteen 777-300ERs and fifteen 777-9s valued at $16.6 billion at list prices.

While all three manufacturers have secured their required licenses from the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) to deliver any airplane carrying 10 percent US technology content, questions persist over whether the new Treasury Department secretary appointed by the Trump Administration will exercise his right to amend, modify or revoke the licenses.

While Trump remains critical of the 2015 nuclear settlement with Iran that allowed for the export of commercial aircraft to the Islamic Republic, he has also lauded Boeing for its role in creating US jobs through the sale of its aircraft around the globe.

Iran Elections Unlikely to Head into Run-Off: Minister

Rahmani Fazli

Speaking in a televised interview on Tuesday, Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli said, “Given that some candidates have abandoned their bids and some alliances have been formed to strengthen certain campaigns, it is estimated that the polls would not head into a second round.”

The electorate will head to the polls on Friday to choose among incumbent President Hassan Rouhani, Ebrahim Raisi, who has served in different capacities at the Iranian Judiciary, Mostafa Aqa-Mirsalim, a current member of Iran’s Expedience Council, and Mostafa Hashemi-Taba, a former vice president.

Iranians will also choose members of Iran’s City and Village Councils in separate elections on the same day.

On Tuesday, Es’haq Jahangiri, the Iranian first vice president and presidential candidate, dropped out of the race to increase Rouhani’s chances of victory.

Tehran Mayor Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf had done so earlier in favor of Raisi.

“We are well prepared to hold the elections and have no concerns in the area,” Rahmani-Fazli asserted.

The minister said the voters can cast their ballots at more than 63,000 stations, and that about 1.5 million staffers, 70,000 monitors and 350,000 security enforcement personnel will be assisting with the election process.

The candidates are also allowed to assign a representative to each polling station to observe the proceedings there, Press TV reported.

As many as 200 million ballots have been printed by Iran’s Bank Melli using the type of paper used in printing out traveler’s checks, he said.

The official added that the ballot papers bear 14 types of codes, and, therefore, cannot be either independently produced or copied. “The ballot papers are now quarantined,” Rahmani-Fazli said, and hoped that such measures would help avoid any voting irregularities.

The number of security forces can be enhanced if need be, said Rahmani-Fazli, giving assurances that the authorities are closely monitoring the circumstances.

Final Days of Election Campaigns in Iran (Photos)

Jahangiri Steps Aside in Favour of Rouhani in Iran Elections

Addressing a packed gathering in the city of Shiraz, Jahangiri called on all his supporters to vote for Rouhani in the upcoming presidential election.

In a statement later released, Jahangiri said he is stepping aside now that Rouhani has passed all the unfair and unethical attacks.

He promised to help Rouhani implement his future plans for the country, and said he is totally devoted to serve reformism and moderation.

Jahangiri’s withdrawal came after the other presidential candidate Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf dropped out in favour of his fellow right-winger Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi on Monday.

Only four contenders are left in the presidential race, but the main rivals are Rouhani and Raisi.

Iranian people will go to the ballot boxes on Friday, May 19.

Jews Live Better Lives in Iran than in Europe: Jewish MP

“Generally speaking, the Jews’ condition in Iran has always been better than in Europe. In our country’s history, there was never a time when all Iranians had the same religion, race, or language, so there is a high degree of tolerance,” Siamak Moreh Sedgh said in an interview with Germany’s Deutsche Welle (DW), which was published on Monday.

“Jews are a recognized minority here, so we can practice our religion freely. We have more than 20 working synagogues in Tehran and at least five kosher butcheries,” he said.

The Iranian MP said that Jews and Muslims respected each other despite differences.

He said the Jewish community and other religious groups in Iran were not separated from one another, adding that Jews have economic relations with Muslims.

Moreh Sedgh, who also serves as the director of the Tehran Jewish Committee and the Dr. Sapir Hospital in the Iranian capital, said his closest friends were Muslims.

“The hospital I work in is a Jewish hospital, for example, but more than 95 percent of both our personnel and patients are Muslim,” he added.

Elsewhere in his comments, the lawmaker pointed out that Jewish children, who go to Iranian public schools, are allowed to stay at home on Saturday if they want to observe the Sabbath, the holy Jewish day.

Moreover, Moreh Sedgh drew a difference between being a Jew and a Zionist, saying some Jews were critical of the behavior of the Israeli regime and army.

“Invading other countries and killing innocent people are not Moses’ teachings,” he said.

About 9,000 Jews are said to be living in Iran.

Iranian Striker among Best Players of Dutch Football League

The Goal news website has named the Iranian international forward of the Dutch Heerenveen football club among the Eredivisie’s best XI of 2016-17 in a Monday (May 15) report.

According to a report by IFP, Ghoochannejhad, who is not used to missing scoring chances, scored 19 goals in 34 matches to help his side finish in ninth place at the end of the season.

Ghoochannejhad ranked third among Eredivisie’s top scorers following Feyenoord’s Danish striker Nicolai Jorgensen (21 goals) and Vitesse’s Ricky van Wolfswinkel (20 goals).

Heerenveen’s forward played a total of 2,924 minutes for his team this season and registered three assists. Sixty percent of his shots have been on target, more than top scorer Jorgensen (54 percent) and Wolfswinkel (58 percent).

Praising his brilliant performance, the Goal report said scoring 19 goals for the Heerenveen team finishing right in the middle of the league is no easy achievement, but the Iran international has been deadly all season.

Other members of Eredivisie’s best XI of 2016-17 are: Willem II’s Greek goalkeeper Kostas Lamprou, Feyenoord’s Dutch right-back Rick Karsdorp, Feyenoord’s Brazilian centre-back Eric Botteghin, Ajax’s Colombian centre-back Davinson Sanchez, Feyenoord’s Dutch centre-back Terence Kongolo, PSV’s Dutch midfielder Davy Propper, Feyenoord’s Dutch defensive midfielder Karim El Ahmadi, Ajax’s Dutch-born Moroccan attacking midfielder Hakim Ziyech, Jorgensen, Heracles’ Swedish forward Samuel Armenteros.

Iranian Academics in US Back Rouhani

A group of Iranians professors, researchers and students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University have, in a statement, announced their support for Iranian presidential contender Hassan Rouhani. The full text of the statement follows.

Over the past few months, leading election activists in different countries have, unfortunately, not done enough to sway undecided voters. The results of voting in most of those countries showed that not participating in the election will not have a positive influence on national development and progress, but rather, will only make the road ahead more difficult and set the stage for monopolies. We, for our part, do believe that not taking part in elections and remaining indifferent in our country will never lead to democracy and national development, and that we can play a role in determining the country’s future by turning out en masse to cast our ballots.

Iranian experts working in modern countries have witnessed the effects of Iran’s development over the past four years. Economic indicators show the country is on the right path to all-out development. From the standpoint of outside observers, an administration which has managed to bring down the inflation rate from more than 45 percent in 2013 to 8 percent in 2017, and push up economic growth from “minus seven” percent to “plus eight” percent, has treaded the right path. Such statistics have laid the groundwork for economic boom as well as economic order and discipline in the country. Moreover, the administration’s not having injected fiat money into society, making every move based on consultations with experts, and believing in long-term planning shows the administration has not been using populist and demagogic tactics, and has prioritized free flow of information in the society and telling the truth.

Over the past four years, we witnessed the conclusion of one of the world’s landmark political and economic agreement on the back of efforts by the Rouhani administration. In the contemporary history, all countries on which similar sanctions had been imposed were gripped by domestic chaos and, in some cases, were attacked by foreign powers. But the Rouhani administration’s political prudence and art of diplomacy brought heads of state from around the world to the negotiating table. The historic talks led to the signature of a fruitful win-win deal. Few accords similar to this one can be found in the history of diplomacy. One of the early effects of the JCPOA was that Iranophobia diminished and was replaced by Iranophilia. Trump’s taking over as US president has made it all the more necessary for such policies to continue. One can say with certainty that Mr. Trump and his associates have not been able to deny the advantages of the JCPOA and have announced time and again that they are seeking pretexts to disrupt the deal.

Today, many experts and investors are keen to visit Iran and establish economic and scientific contacts with the country. This comes as we not only could not defend the performance of the ninth and tenth administrations in most cases, but were ashamed of their performance and could not justify their policies, which ran counter to national interests. All these reasons coupled with relative enhancement of cultural, political and social relations, the successful implementation of the healthcare insurance program, reaching self-sufficiency in wheat production and a rise in production and exports of oil, as mentioned in documented reports by international organizations, will turn Iran into a regional economic hub in the coming years.

By looking at figures released by Iranian science-based companies and their products in recent years, one can realize that Iranian university graduates prefer to stay in Iran and start modern businesses. This is an appropriate approach which runs counter to the path trodden by the ninth and tenth administrations and which suggests the Rouhani administration has invested in the younger generation.

We are of the conviction that May 19th presidential elections will not only serve to pick a president; rather, May 19 will be a day on which to show we are determined not to give up the right path which determines Iranians’ destiny. It will be a choice between going for rationalism, moderation or extremism. We regard it as a rational and expedient move to go to the polls along with you fellow countrymen in Iran, and play a role in determining the country’s future and insisting on civil rights.

UNESCO’s Education 2030 Document “Non-Binding”

unesco2030

The Secretariat of the Iranian government’s Information Council has released a statement on UNESCO’s Education 2030 document. The text of the statement is as follows:

The invaluable and judicious comments by the Leader [of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei] regarding UNESCO’s Education 2030 document were put on the government’s agenda immediately. The Leader made the remarks in a meeting with teachers on May 7, 2017. The government, in line with its responsibility, clarified to Ayatollah Khamenei some of the ambiguities on the document, and began to work to remove the Leader’s other concerns on that.

Despite all this, certain political groups and currents unfortunately cashed in on the coincidence of the Leader’s speech with the presidential election campaign, and sought to use the issue as political leverage to put pressure on the administration in the run-up to the vote. The same groups tried to launch a smear campaign against the administration by spreading lies. For example, they spread the rumour that the government has allowed schools to have education on homosexuality, or that a book on sex education was distributed at Tehran Book Fair. All these claims were lies and only aimed to stir up public opinion and paint a black picture of the Rouhani administration in the eyes of Iranian people.

Such rumour-mongering comes as no country has been asked to sign UNESCO’s Education 2030. Basically, other than binding accords, which must be approved by countries’ parliaments, no UNESCO agreement is physically signed by countries. UNESCO’s Education 2030 is a non-binding deal as well and is regarded as a framework for action which is implemented based on countries’ own national structure. The document only recommends countries act in line with what is suggested.

Ayatollah Khamenei had said in his meeting with teachers that Iran will not agree to enforce documents such as UNESCO’s Education 2030, and reiterated a so-called international organization which is under the influence of super powers cannot tell Iran what to do and what not to do.

The Leader said the government is not permitted to accept and implement such documents.
