A Look at Iranian Newspaper Front Pages on May 16

The top story in all Iranian newspapers today was Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf’s decision to drop out of presidential race in favour of his fellow right-winger Ebrahim Raisi.

The move was widely hailed by conservative media, who praised Qalibaf for the revolutionary decision. Reformist and pro-government papers also called Qalibaf a proxy candidate who just wasted people’s time and public funds for useless campaign.

A gathering in Tehran attended by Iranian ministers of foreign affairs, culture, and oil, and a number of Iranian artists was also a top story today. Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif’s remarks were particularly highlighted today.

The above issues, as well as many more, are highlighted in the following headlines and top stories:

The second prize went to Mostafa Mohseni from Iran, while Francesca Bernardini from Italy and Tatsumi Sakai from Japan shared the third prize.

Two artists, Ana Maria Negara from Romania and Umit Turgay Durgun from Turkey, were also honored at the ceremony.

12 foreign and 5 Iranian sculptors competed in the contest, while 10 students took part in the non-competitive student section.

Shima Sadat Musavi, Fatemeh Akbari and Melika Nik-Khah were also honored in the students’ category.

Organized annually by the Tehran Municipality’s Beautification Organization, the symposium seeks to help beautify the urban environment of the city and familiarize the citizens with the process of making new designs.

Raisi Hails Qalibaf’s ‘Revolutionary’ Withdrawal from Candidacy

“I thank him. His move was revolutionary,” Raisi said, addressing his supporters at a campaign rally in the southern city of Shiraz on Monday.

Qalibaf earlier on Monday said he came to the decision to pull out of the race in favor of Raisi as part of efforts against President Rouhani’s “inefficient and impotent” cabinet.

According to Tasnim dispatches, Qalibaf and Raisi held a meeting on Monday, during which both announced readiness to quit the presidential race in favor of the other.

A senior member of Qalibaf’s team said he practically proved that achieving power per se is not what really matters for a “revolutionary”, but the purpose is supporting the needy and the unemployed frustrated with the administration that has achieved “almost nothing” over the past four years.

From now on, Qalibaf will throw his weight behind Raisi, the senior member added, describing the withdrawal as a “strong coalition” against the incumbent administration.

Attracting attention for his caustic criticism of President Rouhani during live televised debates, Qalibaf was categorised as a principlist figure along with two other candidates, Ebrahim Raisi and Mostafa Aqa-Mirsalim.

The three other candidates known as “reformists” are Rouhani, First Vice-President Eshaq Jahangiri, and Mostafa Hashemitaba.

Qalibaf, 56, had entered the race with the pledge to triple the amount of monthly cash handouts, pay the registered unemployed in his proposed national job center system a basic salary, and create at least 5 million jobs after taking the office.

The presidential election will be held on Friday.

During the previous polls in June 2013, President Rouhani garnered 50.7 percent of a total of over 36 million votes.

The number of eligible voters in the upcoming elections stands at more than 56,400,000. Authorities say Iranian expatriates in 104 countries will have the chance to vote at the same time with the polls at home.

“US Can’t Understand Depth of Iran’s Defensive Might”

General Massoud Jazayeri

Deputy Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Brigadier General Massoud Jazayeri says in view of the information and news presented and published by the influential people and organizations in the US about Iran’s defensive power, it can be inferred that their military and intelligence organizations and agencies cannot understand the depth of the Islamic Republic’s defensive capabilities.

According a report by IFP, he acknowledged that foreigners and enemies, particularly the US, have partial access to information about Iran’s defensive might, and even this limited amount of data has bewildered them and acted as a deterrent against their invasion of the Iranian territory.

Jazayeri said the Islamic Republic’s deterrence power is based on active deterrence, which means the country will not let go of aggressors until it either annihilates them or forces them to surrender.

He further noted that war and military invasion have failed to cast their shadow on Iran for several years, as the country has developed active deterrence power.

Jazayeri warned that this, however, does not imply that Iran can slow down or stop its progress in defensive fields, saying the country will absolutely continue increasing its defensive capabilities given the evil enemies it has.

He stressed that the enemy fails to understand the power and impact of the strong and wholehearted backing provided by Iran’s huge number of human armed forces, adding these forces are among the important factors contributing to the country’s increased military capabilities.

“[Bringing about lasting] Peace and [ensuring greater] stability in Western Asia require the enemies to exit the vast and strategic land. Today, the moves and plots by the US, Zionist regime as well as the corrupt and reactionary regional governments are the main cause of all the evildoing, wars and bloodshed witnessed in this region.”

Jazayeri added nonetheless, even if the Americans increase their military budget a hundredfold to dominate the region, they will fail to achieve their evil goal.

Concerts to Be Held Aboard Cruise Ships in Southern Iran

Less than a week after announcing the launch of Firouzeh—the expected to become Iran’s first cruise liner to work all year round—Bushehr’s top tourism official said that the ship will host “Iran’s first marine concert” soon.

“A popular Iranian singer will hold a concert aboard Firouzeh,” Nasser Amirzadeh, the head of the provincial office of Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization, was quoted as saying by Mana news agency.

He did not reveal the singer’s name, but said the artist’s team is in the process of acquiring permits.

“Hosting concerts is essential to developing tourism in the region,” Amirzadeh said.

Firouzeh, which made its first trip on Friday, is owned by Valfajr Shipping Company. The ship is supposed to become Iran’s first cruise liner to offer year-round tours.

The 200-seat cruise ship operates in the evenings, as the weather is cooler. All travel agencies in the province book tours aboard the ship.

Located off the Persian Gulf coast, the province of Bushehr boasts more than 700 kilometers of coastline where beachgoers can enjoy the sun, sand and a variety of other water sports. About 80% of Bushehr have a coastline alongside the Persian Gulf. Its tourism potentials have largely been overlooked in favor of the region’s massive oil and gas reserves.

Qalibaf Drops Out of Presidential Race in Favour of Raisi

In a statement released on Monday, the conservative mayor of Tehran Qalibaf said he is withdrawing from presidency in favour of Raisi to protect the interests of Iran, the people, and the Revolution.

“A major and important decision has to be taken to unite the Revolutionary Front. Therefore, I ask all my supporters across the country to use all their capacity and support for the success of our dear brother Hujjatoleslam Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi and the formation of his government, known as the Government of Dignity and Work,” he noted in the statement.

He also expressed the hope that his decision would prepare the grounds for the beginning of a new era of economic evolution, when the four-percenters are removed from the economy, and further jobs are created for young Iranians.

“The campaign has just started and we should sacrifice our lives and reputation until the full eradication of corruption and inefficiency,” he added.

Before Qalibaf’s withdrawal, Tasnim had quoted a letter by a group of Iranian students who called on all three conservative candidates – Raisi, Qalibaf and Mirsalim – to remain in the presidential race and prevent President Hassan Rouhani from securing the required number of votes (50%+1), so that the candidates would have to fight in the run-off.

However, now that Qalibaf has withdrawn, one of the candidates will probably win the presidential election in the first round.

Ex-President Khatami Calls on Nation to Vote in Iran Elections

Seyyed Mohammad Khatami

In a video message on Sunday, Khatami called on the Iranian nation and his supporters to vote in the country’s presidential and local elections due to be held on Friday, May 19.

He said both elections are important, and all people should cast their votes to enhance Iran’s national might, foil enemy plots, and resolve the country’s problems.

“All of us, from farmers, workers, employers, and craftsmen to intellectuals, artists, thinkers, and culture professionals, all men and women, should go to the ballot boxes and mark our destiny,” he noted.

He further endorsed the moderate presidential candidate Hassan Rouhani, and ‘testified’ that his government has been successful in the past four years.

“I’m familiar with people’s problems, and I believe great steps have been taken to resolve them,” Khatami said.

“We will vote for Rouhani for freedom of thought, logic in dialogue, law in practice, reclaiming citizens’ rights, and realizing social and economic justice in our society,” he added.

The top story today was the presidential candidates’ trips to various cities and the remarks they made in their stump speeches.
Hassan Rouhani’s trip to Isfahan was particularly highlighted in today’s media, where reformist and pro-government papers released photos of the ‘huge’ number of people who welcomed Rouhani, and conservative papers published photos of the same ceremony from another point of view to show the ‘weak’ reception.

Conservative media also blasted Rouhani’s government for an alleged resumption of paying cash subsidies to those whose payments had been earlier cut. They criticized Rouhani for making such moves ahead of the Friday election in a bid to buy votes.

Tehran Ready for Talks with Saudis If They Stop Anti-Iran Policies

“We do not want our problems to continue with neighboring states and our foreign policy is based on the establishment of constructive relations with other countries, including the Persian Gulf littoral states,” Qassemi said in an interview with the London-based al-Araby al-Jadeed newspaper.

He added that the issues between Tehran and Riyadh are not very complicated, saying, “What undermined mutual relations was misunderstanding and unfounded accusations against Iran.”

Relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia soured after a deadly human crush occurred during Hajj rituals in Mina, near Mecca, in September 2015. Saudi Arabia initially published a death toll of 770, but refused to update it despite gradually surging fatality figures from individual countries whose nationals had been among the victims of the crush.

Tehran Ready for Talks with Saudis If They Stop Anti-Iran Policies

Iran said about 4,700 people, including over 465 of its nationals, lost their lives in the incident.

Mutual ties deteriorated further when Riyadh executed prominent Shia cleric, Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr, in January 2016. Saudi Arabia unilaterally severed its diplomatic ties with Iran after protests in front of its diplomatic premises in the cities of Tehran and Mashhad against Nimr’s execution.

In response to a question about the dispute between Iran and Saudi Arabia over the war on Yemen, the spokesperson said Riyadh had made a big mistake by attacking Yemen.

“This issue is not acceptable to Iran,” Qassemi pointed out.

Tehran Ready for Talks with Saudis If They Stop Anti-Iran Policies

He said that the Yemenis were in possession of a huge amount of arms, adding that the Al Saud regime had wrongly believed that everything would end in its own favor; however, it faced the Yemeni people’s resistance.

“Iran has neither military nor financial intervention in Yemen,” the spokesman said.

Since March 2015, the Saudi regime has been engaged in a brutal campaign against Yemen in an attempt to reinstall Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, the former Yemeni president who resigned and is a staunch ally of Riyadh. The campaign also aims to crush the Houthi Ansarullah movement. The Saudi regime has failed to achieve its objectives.

Latest tallies show that the Saudi war on Yemen has so far killed over 12,000 Yemenis and wounded thousands more.

Qalibaf Vows to Declare Number of Created Jobs on Billboard

Qalibaf

Qalibaf, who is one of the six Iranian candidates contesting the country’s May 19 election, has, in a stump speech in Shiraz in the southern Iranian province of Fars on Sunday (May 14), promised to create 5 million jobs if elected as president.

Based on the feasibility studies and plans, Qalibaf said, 1.2 million will be generated in the villages and deprived areas based on each district’s comparative advantages, to develop small industries and improve the agro sector.

According to a report by IFP, he added he will also install a digital billboard in the Iranian capital, Tehran, to publicly announce the number of jobs created by his administration on a daily basis after he is elected as president.

He said Rouhani’s administration has failed to produce any favourable outcome for the people during its four-year opportunity.

Commenting on the blocking of his registration website for entrepreneurs and job seekers, the candidate said, the website was blocked due to the dissent expressed by the 4-percent affluent population of Iran.

He added this is while, now, they (President Hassan Rouhani’s administration) have set up and launched a similar website called ‘internship’.

Qalibaf also promised to pay a monthly amount of close to $70 to unemployed people until they find job.
