Iran Imposes Retaliatory Sanctions against US Entities

In a statement on Thursday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry slammed the US Treasury Department’s move to announce new sanctions on Iran as an attempt to “downplay the positive outcomes” of the Washington government’s measure to continue to waive anti-Iran sanctions as required by the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a nuclear agreement between Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).

In dual actions on Wednesday, the US administration extended wide sanctions relief for Iran under the JCPOA, but also imposed penalties on Iranian and Chinese figures for what it called supports for Tehran’s ballistic missile program.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran condemns the US government’s bad will (and) attempts to reduce the positive impacts of carrying out its (US) JCPOA-required commitments by adding legal and natural personalities to its (US) list of foreign, unilateral and illegal sanctions, and considers that as unacceptable and in breach of the international law,” the statement added.

The Foreign Ministry also reiterated that Iran’s inalienable right to boost its defense capabilities for protecting its sovereignty and territorial integrity or to press ahead with its missile program have nothing to do with its international commitments and with the UN Resolution 2231.

Resolution 2231, passed by the 15-memebr United Nations Security Council in July 2015, has endorsed the 159-page JCPOA. The resolution calls upon Iran “not to undertake any activity related to ballistic missiles designed to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons.”

Iran maintains that none of its missiles have been designed to be capable of carrying nuclear warheads, because nuclear weapons have basically no place in the Islamic Republic’s defense doctrine.

Elsewhere in the statement, the Iranian Foreign Ministry said it came up with a plan to retaliate the new US sanctions by adding nine American individuals and companies to the list of the “legal and natural individuals under Iran sanctions.”

According to the statement, the nine entities “have a proven record of brazen violation of human rights and international humanitarian law by engagement or direct and indirect aid and abet in the Zionist regime’s anti-human crimes in the occupied Palestine or in that regime’s terrorist measures, of involvement or aid and abet in sponsoring Takfiri terrorism and suppression of people of the (Middle East) region, or of effective engagement in measures against the Islamic Republic of Iran’s national security.”

The US Treasury Department announced in its Wednesday statement that Washington has sanctioned two Iranian defense officials, an Iranian company and members of a China-based network for the so-called supports for Iran’s ballistic missile program.

“Ties with Other Countries Should Be Based on Dignity”

Iranian presidential candidate Ebrahim Raisi in a stump speech in the city of Semnan weighed in on a range of issues in the run-up to the election. The following are highlights of his comments:

–  People have grievances and concerns over the one million jobless university graduates, the closure of hundreds of workshops and factories, and why father and son are unemployed at the same time. They’re concerned why factories are being closed down while there are enough facilities? What is going to happen to the livelihoods and employment of people?

– We will establish diplomatic relations with other countries based on dignity. We believe the Foreign Ministry should ease exports through foreign relations.

– They (the Rouhani administration) say they have provided villages with Internet connection. We have no problems with the Internet. What we’re saying is that you should promote economic activities in cyberspace.

– They accuse others of trying to disrupt freedom. But it wasn’t us who gave boys and girls freedom. God did so. They’re free because God has given them freedom. The government should protect this freedom.

– They say the country has weathered the stagnation, OK, take the hands of businessmen and help them weather the stagnation as well. I’m not denying that the inflation rate in the country hovers around eight percent, but there is no dynamism in the economy. Mr. Rouhani said “figures don’t count, but it’s people’s pockets that do.” Go to the market and you’ll see the prices of basic goods have doubled.

– Students at Sharif University of Technology wanted to conduct a satellite test. But officials removed the launch pad, lest foreigners might get upset! These are bad signs.

Iran’s Enemies No Friend of Any Government: President’s Aide

Hesamoddin Ashna, a cultural advisor to Iranian president and presidential candidate Hassan Rouhani, said in a post in his Telegram channel, “Everyone knows that the Iranian nation has enemies. Some of our deceitful enemies try to deceive public opinion by pretending that they support a particular group or faction.”

However, he added, the Iranian nation will not be deceived.

“Our enemies have never been a friend of any [Iranian] government. The Iranian nation will go to the ballot boxes on Friday to decide its destiny, and does not need the recommendation and support of its deceitful enemies.”

“No government in the Islamic Republic is tricked by their [enemies’] plots. You are just securing your interests while putting us in trouble,” he added.

“As we witnessed in the case of JCPOA [nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers], the power stemmed from the ballot boxes will once again isolate the US radicals at the international level, and will marginalize those who consider boycotting the elections as an ‘opportunity’,” Ashna added.

“We will not anymore allow domestic hard-liners to stab us in the back in an unannounced alliance with global hard-liners and warmongers,” he noted.

Shoy Waterfall, Largest of Its Kind in Middle East

Shoy Waterfall annually attracts thousands of tourists who have to walk a long distance to reach the village where the waterfall is located.

The long and difficult walk starts in Teleh Zang and ends in the waterfall, which is located 90 kilometres away from Dezful.

Here are IRNA’s photos of the beautiful waterfall and the path to it:

“Rouhani Gov’t Made Many Breakthroughs in Past 4 Years”

Mohammad Javad Zarif

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has hailed people for choosing Hassan Rouhani as president in the 2013 election. Here are the highlights of his recent comments made in a gathering with Iranian artists and culture professionals:

[Many years ago,] The UN Security Council adopted seven anti-Iran sanctions. The US had been trying for more than thirty years to secure its objectives during the Iraqi imposed war on Iran in the 1980s and during the 1979 seizure of the US embassy in Tehran and also in Iran’s nuclear issue. Add to that the threats and economic pressure.

The situation needed to change. But people changed the situation by taking part in the election. And [this time, too] people will turn out to cast their ballots on Friday.

The hero-style flexibility, which was proposed by the Leader, and which Iran showed during the JCPOA scenario, contributed heavily to Iran’s success. After that, the president had control over the issue. He made every effort [to advance the issue].

Today, the wrong myth of Iranophobia has shattered. However, the enemy seeks to re-create it. We, the one who serve the nation in the foreign policy arena, ask for artists’ help. They can introduce a culture of dialog and tolerance to the world.

Films, music, plays, paintings, etc are the best representations of realities in Iran. Artists need to make their presence felt on the international stage in order to eliminate Iranophobia.

“Alliance with Raisi Aimed at Countering Gov’t of Four-Percenters”

“Alliance with Raisi Aimed at Countering Gov’t of Four-Percenters”

Tehran Mayor Qalibaf, who withdrew from Iran’s May 19 presidential election on Monday (May 15) in a bid to secure more votes for his fellow conservative Raisi, said their coalition is aimed at ending the tenure of the four-percenters’ government as well as the present status quo.

According to a report by IFP, addressing a huge rally of Raisi’s supporters staged at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini Grand Prayer Grounds (Mosalla) on Tuesday, Qalibaf said, “In these decisive and critical days, we came to this conclusion that, to end the term in office of the four-percenter’ government and the present status quo, I had to form an alliance with my 40-year-long friend and dear brother.”

“Today is a great day for the Revolutionary Front, on which we translated unity in word into unity in action.  But this is not enough.”

He urged their supporters to do their best in the run-up to the election to set an all-time record of 96-percent turnout and end the Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s term in office, which is an achievable target.

“We will end the tenure of the four-percenter’ government to let everybody know that we do know, want and can.”

Best Goal of FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Scored by a Goalkeeper! (Video)

FIFA, the international governing body of football, futsal and beach soccer, in an Instagram post felicitated Iranian goalkeeper Peyman Hosseini on winning the Goal of the Tournament award at the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Bahamas 2017.

According to a report by IFP, FIFA’s congratulatory message, which was posted along with a photo showing Hosseini in the tournament, read: “The #FIFABeachSoccer Goal of the tournament was scored… by a goalkeeper! Congratulations to #Iran’s @peymanhosseinii!”

From more than 260 goals scored at the FIFA Beach Soccer Bahamas 2017, it was ultimately, the very first goal scored at the tournament that captured the votes of thousands of fans from all over the world.

Just 19 minutes into the opening game of the tournament, Hosseini stunned the crowd when, deep into his own half, he coolly flicked it up with his right foot and then fired a volley across the pitch that ended in the top corner of the Mexican net. From that moment, the very first goal of the tournament was a contender for the Goal of the Tournament!

Hosseini’s strike defeated nine other incredible goals to become Goal of the Tournament.

Other candidates for the award were Italy’s Paolo Palmacci (for his goal against Nigeria), Ecuador’s Daniel Cedeno (for his goal against Switzerland), Brazil’s Bruno Xavier (for his goal against Tahiti), Italy’s Gabriele Gori (for his goal against Mexico), Switzerland’s Dejan Stankovic (for his goal against Senegal), Portugal’s Bruno Novo (for his goal against the UAE), Brazil’s Rodrigo (for his goal against Portugal), Japan’s Takasuke Goto (for his goal against Poland) and Nigeria’s Azeez Abu (for his goal against Mexico).

Real Achievement

Commenting on his award in a Farsi interview with the Tasnim News Agency, Hosseini said, “I became very happy at hearing the news. Nevertheless, Iran’s success to stand third at the tournament has helped this achievement of mine and other individual awards to become more valuable. In case we had not managed to finish in third place, none of these individual accomplishments would have had the same value they have now.”

Hosseini, who also won adidas Golden Glove award at the end of the tournament, was of great assistance to his side in their success to claim a historic third place finish in the meet.

Brazil was crowned champion after thrashing Tahiti 6-0 in the final.

“Rouhani Looks for Solution to Iran’s Problems Abroad”

“Rouhani Looks for Solution to Iran’s Problems Abroad”

Iranian presidential candidate Raisi has, in an address to a huge gathering of his fans in Tehran on Tuesday, weighed in on a range of issues. The highlights of his comments are as follows:

– I said it is necessary to create more than a million jobs in the country today. Mr. Rouhani, my question to you is, “Isn’t this stipulated in the 6th [National Development] plan?”

– You neither contributed to policy-making, nor handed over the plan to the Parliament. You didn’t notify [others of the plan] either. Looks like you are not going to go ahead with the plan!

– I said your wrong policies have widened the gap between different social strata.

– You increased the prices of energy commodities, but didn’t add anything to people [‘s income].

– I approve of increasing cash subsidies for low-income families, but you said there are not enough resources for such a move. There are enough resources. And why did you suddenly decided to increase pensions a few weeks before the election?

In the run-up to the election, you gave assistant village chiefs 10 million tomans [$2,600] each. Where did you bring that money from?

– Under the law for the [implementation of the 6th National Development] Plan, one million jobs must be created every year. Mr. Rouhani, you neither handed over the plan to the Parliament, nor announced it, nor want to implement it.

– Anyone from whatever social class and whatever political taste knows that 17 thousand workshops have been closed down today. Half of the capacity of factories and workshops in the country is not operational.

– In order to solve problems, get the sanctions removed and boost businesses, they (the Rouhani administration) tried to find the solution abroad.

– The key to locks is in the hands of the Iranian nation.

– Civil rights mean people’s livelihoods shouldn’t shrink ever day, mean teachers shouldn’t see their funds plundered.

– The country was in your hands for four years. What did you do for it? You want to create a bipolar atmosphere to secure more votes. Today, people have to choose between “inefficiency” and “work”.

– We favour diplomacy, but one based on power and dignity.

– We should provide a fair administrative system and fair payment system in the country.

– You are saying you support artists. Supporting artists means a fair atmosphere should be created for all artists, not that we see an artist die in hospital, with no one asking about the artist’s health.

– We have enough laws and documents about civil rights. Civil rights mean women and girls should have respected jobs. Civil rights mean people’s livelihoods shouldn’t shrink every day, mean university graduates should not be unemployed, mean teachers, who want their rights, shouldn’t see their funds looted.

Imam Khomeini’s Grandson Calls on Iranians to Back Rouhani

Seyed Hassan Khomeini
Seyed Hassan Khomeini

Seyyed Hassan Khomeini, the grandson of the late founder of the 1979 Islamic Revolution Imam Khomeini, has, in a video message, announced his support for Rouhani, expressing the hope that on May 19, Iranians would decide their fate for the coming years and shape their future.

Addressing the Iranian people, he said, “We hope that on the day of the election (May 19), we would decide our fate for the coming years and decades. Chief economists of the country have all attested to the [incumbent] government’s enormous capabilities.”

On Friday (May 19), Iranians will go to ballot boxes to cast their votes in favour of their favourite candidates.

Vetted by the Guardian Council, initially six candidates qualified to compete in Iran’s 12th presidential election. They included Mostafa Aqa-Mirsalim, Mostafa Hashemitaba, Es’haq Jahangiri, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi and Hassan Rouhani.

With only a few days to the election, however, two of the candidates Qalibaf and Jahangiri, dropped out of the race in favour of their fellow-partisans, Raisi and Rouhani, respectively.
