Iran Strongly Denounces Tillerson’s ‘Interventionist’ Remarks

In response to the recent statements by Rex Tillerson, Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said such remarks are ‘interventionist’ and clear violation of norms of international law.

Qassemi also called the foreign policy of the new government in the United States “confused, affected by inappropriate suggestions, and escaping from realities,” adding that the most recent example of this policy are the statements made by Tillerson.

Earlier, the US Secretary of State claimed that Iran continues activities and interventions that destabilize the Middle East. He also accused Iran of providing support for the Assad government, funding militias and foreign fighters in Iraq and Yemen, and arming “terrorist” organizations like Hezbollah, which threaten Washington’s ally Israel. “We and our allies must counter Iran’s aspirations of hegemony in the region,” Tillerson had noted in an address to the US House Foreign Affairs Committee on Wednesday.

The Iranian foreign ministry spokesman further noted on Thursday, “Undoubtedly, such immature and inappropriate remarks are attempts to create gap within Iran’s ruling system and also to create divisions among the great Iranian nation. Like the last four decades, such false wishes will not come true. Since the 1950s, the US has been seeking different forms of intervention in Iran such as coup d’état, regime change, and military intervention.”

They have been continuously and formally pursuing this within the first three decades after the establishment of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Qassemi noted.

However, he added, such efforts have always failed and led to Iranians’ hatred for the US and an international embarrassment for Washington.

“New authorities in the US seem to have forgotten that recently their predecessors were forced to apologize to the great nation of Iran for their moves to overthrow the popular and national government of Iran [in 1953] and also for their support for the dictatorial and tyrannical establishment [of Shah], and at the same time for their political slogans to promote democratic values in the years following the 1953 coup,” Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman added.

Qassemi slammed the US government for adopting such a futile approach towards Iran for several decades, saying such moves have always been counterproductive.

“This has been proven by huge turnout of the great nation of Iran in many elections in which they exercised democracy at the ballot box,” Qassemi added.

“During the consolidation years of the Iranian revolution and at the time of the imposed war [in the 1980s] and illegal sanctions against the country, the Iranian government and nation proved that they stand out to protect their country, the Establishment and its ideals with rationality, wisdom and unity,” he noted.

“These baseless and fanciful remarks are despised and rejected by Iranians from all walks of life who are educated and resisting.”

Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman also warned Trump’s administration not to go astray visa-a-vis the great and brave nation of Iran. He also advised them not to make a mistake again because it would only lead to more regret and heavy losses for them.

“The only option for them [US officials] is to have a clear understanding of the realities in Iran and the region, and not to make idle threats.”

Qassemi advised the US officials to stop interfering in the internal affairs of Iran and the other regional countries and instead deal with the developments in Iran and the region realistically and logically.

“They should know that like security and sustainable stability, the historical, geographical, and cultural realities are far beyond doing business with and milking the regional countries. Wisdom, understanding and thinking is needed,” he pointed out.

Map Shows Iraqi Areas Retaken from ISIS in Past Years

Map Shows Iraqi Areas Retaken from ISIS in Past Years

As you see in the picture below, the left map released by the Iraqi army dates back to 2014 in which about one-third of Iraq was under ISIS militants’ control.

The right map is of 2017 when most parts have already been retaken from ISIS except for small areas in Nineveh, Anbar and Kirkuk provinces which are still the scene of clashes between the Iraqi army and the ISIS militants.

ISIS militants took large swaths of northern and western Iraq in the summer of 2014. Over the past three years, the militants have been losing ground steadily.

This has increased their acts of violence in revenge for the blows they have been suffering at the hand of Iraqi forces, particularly in the northern city of Mosul.

The Iraqi forces took control of eastern Mosul in January after 100 days of fighting, and launched the battle in the west on February 19.

Iran Extends Sympathy to Families of London Fire Victims

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi in a message on Wednesday expressed regret over the London fire which killed at least 17 people and wounded several others.

He also extended the Islamic Republic’s sympathy to the families of the victims, whose number is expected to rise, according to the London police.

Up to 600 people are believed to have been inside Grenfell Tower’s 120 flats when the blaze tore through the 24-storey building in the early hours.

Eighteen people are in critical care after 79 injured people were taken to hospital. But many are still missing after residents were left trapped on upper floors as flames rapidly ripped up the block after initially being told to stay in their homes.

Pictures showed flames engulfing the block and a plume of smoke visible across the capital, while others showed desperate residents looking out of windows in the block.

As an investigation into the cause of the fire began, residents reported that fire alarms had not sounded and that they were told to “stay put” in their flats and “put a wet towel down by the door”.

Iran Should Steer Clear of Saudi-Qatari Row: Analyst

Senior political analyst Sadeq Maleki has, in an interview with Farsi IR Diplomacy website, expressed his opinion on the approach Iran should adopt vis-à-vis the Saudi-Qatari crisis. The highlights of his Farsi analytical piece follow:

It would be logical, rational and far-sighted to distance yourself from conflicts and crises in which you are not involved, especially when parties to the crisis are your rivals or enemies.

In the Middle East, a geographical area awash with complexities and ambiguities, every step taken should be well calculated, especially in times of crises. In the crisis involving Saudi Arabia and Qatar, two countries which look at Iran as a stranger, if not an enemy, the best stance that Tehran can take would be “positive neutrality.” Iran has proposed to offer consultations as well as humanitarian and food aid to Doha. This will not only help Iran steer clear of possible dangers associated with the crisis, but will enhance Iran’s prestige and keep grudges from further piling up.

One should bear in mind that the sudden emergence of ISIS was the joint handiwork of Riyadh, Doha and Ankara. Saudi Arabia has been the origin of the ISIS’ Takfiri ideology, Qatar has been its financial sponsor and Turkey has provided logistical support for the terror group.

Tehran needs to stay away from these filthy hands. Ankara has even contributed more to the emergence of ISIS than Saudi Arabia has. Turkish officials have explicitly spoken out against Tehran’s stand on developments in Iraq and Syria.

One should make precise calculations before getting involved in a crisis. It is easy to step into a crisis, but very difficult and costly to get out. We should prudently distance ourselves from the Doha-Riyadh trap.

Iran’s democratic system is a far cry from the ruling establishments in Riyadh and Doha. At a time when the manifestations of democracy in Iran have posed a serious challenge to countries south of the Persian Gulf region, some might think that certain political factions in Iran have misgivings over the trend of democracy and its results, and hence, they tie Iran’s fate to that of the Doha-Riyadh crisis. They seek to create the impression that Iran has turned into a police state after the Tehran terror attacks in a bid to deal a blow to democracy.

Iranian people have experienced difficult days of war and conflict. We should not get them involved in another war and crisis. In making its final choice, neither will Doha be considerate towards us, nor is it an entity worth sacrificing ourselves for. In the conflict between Saudi Arabia and Qatar, Iran is like a stranger in the middle of a family feud and can be a common victim if Qatar and Saudi Arabia begin the trend of reconciliation. So, we should not be deceived and should not set the stage for our own entrapment. And one more thing; we should not believe and get on board with Turkey. The death and destruction in Iraq and Syria today are the fallout from Ankara’s destructive policies.

“June 7 Can Be Named Day of Solidarity against Terror”

Iranian parliamentarian Abdolkarim Hosseinzadeh has suggested that June 7, the day when ISIS terrorists killed 17 people in twin attacks on Tehran, should be named as National Day of Solidarity against Terrorism.

Speaking at an open session of Parliament, the MP condemned the terror raids while expressing condolences on the martyrdom of a number of Iranian citizens in the terror incidents.

“It’s been years that ISIS has been savagely butchering men and women, old and young, Muslims and non-Muslims, and slaughtering members of all ethnic and religious groups as well as humans and humanity,” he said.

“In their latest inhumane move, they targeted Iranian people at the Imam Khomeini mausoleum and the Iranian Parliament,” said the MP.

He then presented a brief explanation on the genealogy of terrorism in Iran since 1979.

In the early years following the 1979 Islamic Revolution of Iran, he said, terrorists affiliated with the MKO terror group sought to assassinate Iranian authorities, and several Iranian officials were martyred in the terrorist acts

However, the MP pointed out that some of their acts of terror failed such as the attempts on the lives of Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and late Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani.

Later on in the 1970s and 1980s, Hosseinzadeh added, terrorist groups mostly aimed to target and pressure religious democracy authorities in the country. They could not even tolerate huge turnouts in Iranian elections and, as a result, began to carry out acts of terror, added the MP.

Abdolkarim HosseinzadehThe terrorist acts included the assassination of high-profile Iranian officials as well as the killing of ordinary citizens, he said.

“Terror groups couldn’t tolerate the 40-million-strong turnout in Iran’s 2017 elections either […] and targeted two very significant institutions,” the parliamentarian said.

He mentioned that victims of terror in Iran include people of different ethnic and religious groups as terrorists have been targeting them as “Iranians” and not as individuals belonging to a certain ethnic or religious group.

Accordingly, he criticized certain individuals for putting a religious and ethnic spin on the recent terror attacks in Tehran and seeking to link the terrorists with certain religious or ethnic communities.

The parliamentarian then called on security forces to seriously deal with those involved in suspicious and terrorist acts as well as those who seek to polarize the society and trigger sectarian rifts.

Chinese Naval Group to Dock at Iranian Port

The Chinese Navy flotilla comprises two battle cruisers, a support vessel, and a helicopter, the Iranian Navy’s Public Relations Department said.

It said the group, which has just been to the Pakistani port of Karachi for training purposes, will be docking at the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas on Thursday.

A high-ranking naval delegation from China visited Iran for talks in October 2015.

A Chinese Navy flotilla also arrived in the southern Iranian coast three years ago.

Subsequently, Iran’s Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari visited China’s eastern port city of Qingdao with a high-ranking team in attendance and held talks with Chinese military officials.

The Iranian Navy dispatched a naval group to China back in 2012, setting a new precedence in the countries’ bilateral naval cooperation.

Mideast Leaders Pressured Obama to Bomb Iran: Kerry

The recent Oslo Forum 2017 in the Norwegian capital gathered together former US State Secretary John Kerry, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, and EU’s Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini, who played the main role in the finalization of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers.

In his Tuesday address to the 15th Annual International Retreat of Mediators and Peace Process Actors in Oslo Forum, Kerry referred to the difficult situation his country faced before the nuclear deal, which was finally signed in July 2015.

Kerry has been quoted by IRNA and Shargh reporters as saying, “We were moving toward a conflict quickly. There is no way to express it otherwise. The leaders in the region personally told me and President Obama that you should ‘bomb these guys.’ This is the only way to solve this problem. And we chose another way.”

He went on to say that Obama insisted the issue of Iran’s nuclear program should be resolved through negotiation rather than a military conflict.

Iran consented to work with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and the world is now a safer place thanks to the deal, he added, according to IRNA.

“We are confident that Iran sticks to its commitments and others should also fulfil their JCPOA obligations,” he was quoted as saying.

Elsewhere in the Forum, the European foreign policy chief Mogherini also said that she was confident the United States would stick to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, despite its protestations to the contrary, as the deal is working.

“I am confident that the review in the United States will bring to wise decisions, which means keeping something that is working,” she told a news conference on the margins of the peace mediation conference in Oslo.

“In any case the European Union will guarantee that the deal keeps, that we stick to that … and that our policy of engagement with Iran continues.”
