Iranian FM to Attend Friday Trilateral Meeting in Moscow

Mohammad Javad Zarif

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi confirmed on Tuesday that Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif will leave Tehran for Moscow on Friday to take part in a trilateral meeting with Russia’s Sergey Lavrov and Syria’s Walid Muallem.

Earlier on Tuesday, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova had declared that at the end of the week three-way talks are planned in Moscow between the Foreign Ministers of Russia, Syria and Iran.

Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov had hosted his Iranian and Syrian counterparts in Moscow late October 2016 to confer on ways to intensify anti-terrorism efforts in the Arab country.

The meeting seems to be in response to the US President Donald Trump’s military order against the Damascus government.

Over 100 Apply for Iran’s Presidency on First Registration Day

Over 100 Register for Iran’s Presidency on First Registration Day

As the process of registration of applicants for candidacy for the post of president kicked off at Iran’s Interior Ministry on Tuesday, dozens of people made applications on the first day, most of whom were ordinary people without the experience of any political activities, according to Tasnim.

The process began at the country’s Election Office, which is located within the Interior Ministry’s premises in Tehran, and will last for the next five days.

The candidates are expected to be political and religious personages who fulfill the fourfold criteria of being of Iranian origin, being a national of the Islamic Republic, being prudent and capable of taking on leadership duties, and being religious and believing in the Islamic Republic’s principles and its official religion.

All hopefuls will be vetted by the Guardian Council, which will announce the names of qualified candidates possibly in late April, Press TV reported.

Here are photos of some of the candidates who signed up today:

Terrorists Killed after Assassinating IRGC General in Southeast Iran

Commander Rouhollah Aali was gunned down by “two Takfiri terrorists” while traveling to the Kurin District of Zahedan County in Iran’s Sistan-and-Baluchestan Province on duty, Tasnim News Agency reported on Tuesday.

The assailants were subsequently killed by Basij volunteer forces, it added.

Aali was the commander of the Kurin Battalion of Brigade 110 of the IRGC’s Salman Unit, which is assigned to Sistan-and-Baluchestan Province.

The IRGC has foiled numerous Takfiri plots to conduct terrorist activities in Iran and arrested many Takfiri elements.

Last June, Commander of the IRGC’s Ground Forces Brigadier General Mohammad Pakpour said the forces had captured a terrorist outfit in southwestern Iran, which had admitted to receiving Saudi and American backing.

No Solution for Syria without Iran, Russia: German FM

“Not everyone may like it, but without Moscow and without Tehran there will be no solution for Syria,” Gabriel said ahead of a meeting between foreign ministers of the Group of Seven industrialized nations.

He further noted that Russia and Iran must be involved in any peace process to end Syria’s six-year civil war.

The German FM said the United States had “sent a clear signal to the Assad regime” by launching cruise missiles at a Syrian air base, but said other nations should “reach out to Russia” rather than seek a military escalation.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel also called on US President Donald Trump in a phone conversation on Monday to continue the Syrian settlement under the UN auspices and cooperate with Russia, German government spokesman Steffen Seibert said.

“The Chancellor stressed that … there is the need to do everything to continue political settlement under the UN auspices,” Seibert said. “At the same time, cooperation with Russia has special importance for launching transitional political process,” he said

Japanese foreign ministry spokesman Masato Ohtaka has also said that “in terms of dialogue and other political engagement I think a lot of countries think that Russia can play a key role.”

The G-7 wants to deliver a united message to Russia through US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who heads to Moscow after Tuesday’s meeting in Lucca, Italy.

German-Iranian Head Coach Attracts Attentions in Bundesliga

Clubs in the Bundesliga, Germany’s premier football league, were among the very first European teams to trust Iranian football players. Not a long time has elapsed since Iran sent its first football players to the Bundesliga clubs, and now the German league has given the former Iranian-German football player Alexander Nouri the opportunity to gain worldwide fame as Werder Bremen’s head coach.

According to a Farsi report by the Vaghaye Ettefaghieh newspaper, these days, two young coaches have attracted all the attentions in the Bundesliga. The first one is the 29-year-old German manager of Hoffenheim Julian Nagelsmann whose side have achieved spectacular results in the current season (2016-17) and stand third in the Bundesliga table with 51 points from 28 matches.

The second one, however, is the retired Iranian-German footballer and current head coach of Werder Bremen Alexander Nouri, who is of greater importance to Iranians and more attractive to them than Nagelsmann.

He was appointed as Werder Bremen coach a few months ago, when the crisis-hit team were struggling in the relegation zone. Nouri helped them climb to the 10th position in the table with 36 points and, given the slight point-difference between the teams sitting in the middle of the table, they have the chance to book a Europa League berth. The question is how Nouri managed to save the veteran team from a disastrous finish in the present season of the German league.

And Suddenly Werder Bremen

German-Iranian Head Coach 3Nouri was born in Buxtehude, a town on the Este River in northern Germany, to an Iranian father and German mother. His father is an Iranian native who was born in the city of Rasht and grew up in Tehran.

During 1998-2001, he played for Werder Bremen II. In 1999, he was transferred to the club’s first team but did not find the opportunity to be in the team’s line-up in any of their matches. He, then, was transferred to US Major League Soccer club Seattle Sounders. In 2001, he returned to Germany and joined the Regionalliga, the fourth tier of football in the German football league system, club KFC Uerdingen 05.

In three seasons, he played 89 matches for the German team and scored eight goals. In 2004, he joined Regionalliga Nord – the fourth tier of the German football league system in the states of Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein, Bremen and Hamburg – club VfL Osnabrück and played for the team for four years, scoring eight goals in 85 games.

He played for Regionalliga Nord club Holstein Kiel during 2008-10. Finally, in 2010, he joined VfB Oldenburg, a German association football club based in Oldenburg, Lower Saxony. This was the last team the Iranian-German football player played for.

He started his coaching career as an assistant in his last club and in 2013 was appointed the team’s head coach.

A year later, he joined Werder Bremen’s coaching staff as an assistant. During 2014-16, he coached Werder Bremen II and obtained good results with the side. Nevertheless, Werder Bremen started the 2016-17 season with the Ukranian manager Viktor Anatoliyovych Skrypnyk. They conceded a bitter 0-6 defeat to Bayern Munich and moved to the bottom of the Bundesliga table from the very beginning. Although Werder Bremen continued their losing streak for another two weeks, what led to the sacking of Skrypnyk was his side losing to Sportfreunde Lotte, a third-division team, in DFB-Pokal, German knockout football cup competition.

Following the fiasco, Werder Bremen president and chief executive Klaus-Dieter Fischer fired Skrypnyk and appointed Nouri at the helm of the club temporarily. Werder Bremen lost their first match with Nouri as their head coach but managed to power past Wolfsburg and win their first three points.

Next week, Nouri’s side drew with SV Darmstadt 98 to be able to leave the relegation zone thanks to the four points gained from their previous two matches. What marked Nouri’s most impressive achievement in Werder Bremen was the Die Grün-Weiben (the Green-Whites) 2-1 victory over Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the seventh week. Following the great victory, the club’s president officially named Nouri as the team’s permanent head coach.

From Fear of Dropping to Lower Division to Europa League Berth

German-Iranian Head Coach 1Nouri’s tough days began after he was appointed the club’s permanent head coach. Werder Bremen’s string of defeats in a number of consecutive matches raised doubts about the coach’s abilities. In fact, since the very beginning of Nouri’s appointment at the helm of Werder Bremen, there were critics voicing doubt about Fischer’s decision. However, right when the team were apparently experiencing some of their toughest days, Werder Bremen obtained a couple of good results to kindle hope in the hearts of the fans and club’s directors.

At the end of the first half of the season and the beginning of the second one, Werder Bremen, however, conceded a number of defeats in the German league. Nevertheless, their overall progress was quite visible. After all, losing 2-1 to Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, when they were piling up points at light speed scoring more than two goals in each match, were not disastrous results. As time passed, Werder Bremen’s results improved, with their best being obtained in the 25th week when they thrashed RB Leipzig, currently second in the table, with three goals. Werder Bremen snatched a 2-2 draw against their hosts Eintracht Frankfurt in their latest match – week 26 – under Nouri which was played on Friday (April 7). In their past 25 matches under Nouri, Werder Bremen have notched up 10 victories, snatched four draws and conceded nine defeats. The team’s results are apparently satisfactory to the club’s directors, president as well as fans.

Thrilling Like Nouri

German-Iranian Head CoachIn addition to the team’s good results, a number of other factors are also effective in Nouri becoming a main subject for German media. Nouri’s behaviour and moves in the technical area during the match is very interesting. The coach’s emotional reactions during his side’s games have caused many not to notice or regret the absence of former Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp, who has moved to Liverpool, in the present season of Bundesliga. However, Nouri’s reactions and moves have their own critics.

Following Werder Bremen’s draw against Eintracht Frankfurt, German media lauded Nouri, writing he has great ambitions as the head coach of the German club and has devised plans to book a Europa League berth.

Even, the well-known German head coach Thomas Schaaf, who has coached Werder Bremen for more than 14 years and steered the team to Bundesliga championship in 2004, has praised the Iranian-German coach, saying, “Alexander Nouri does his best to guarantee his side’s success. This is crystal clear. He uses his body language in the technical area very well during the game. However, I warn him to avoid expressing too much excitement. The team’s self-confidence has been obviously boosted. It is quite evident that Werder Bremen is not comparable to what it was at the beginning of the season.”

Schaaf, who is quite popular among Werder Bremen fans, added a team is required to remain calm and work hard and carefully to be able to go through to the Europa League.

“It is not bad to be happy and satisfied with the team’s present success, but considerable effort is required to secure its continuity. This is a very big game and a long way with defeats waiting in ambush. Concentration is the key to the continuation of Werder Bremen’s successes.”

Perhaps, following Nouri’s recent successes and achievements many in Iran are now thinking to bring him back to the country and use his expertise. However, given his recent results and brilliant performance in Europe, he has become even more well-known in Germany and will, most probably, continue his career as a head coach in Bundesliga for many more years. At present, he does not seem to be thinking about working in Iran.

Iran Not to Let US Change Equations in Syria: Advisor

Hossein Sheikholeslam, a top aide to the Iranian foreign minister, strongly denounced Washington’s missile strike on a Syrian air field.

He further underlined that Iran, as an important actor in Syria, will not let the US and its allies change the equations to their benefit.

“The attack is condemned from every perspective and we, as the mighty power on the ground in Syria, will not allow the equations to change in Syria after (victories in) Aleppo,” Sheikholeslam said on Monday, according to Fars.

He said that the Americans’ missile strike against Syria before scrutinizing and finding the culprits behind the Idlib chemical attack was unacceptable.

Washington may be able to fire missiles but the main role is played by those who enjoy the power on the ground, the Iranian advisor went on to say.

Reforms Necessary in Syrian Gov’t: Iranian President

Rouhani

“From the very beginning [of the civil war in Syria], the Islamic Republic of Iran believed that the terrorists – who have come from all regional and ultra-regional countries to Syria to fight against Syrian people in the most cruel way – should be countered, and an end should be put to this trend,” President Rouhani said in a Monday press conference.

However, he added, the Syrian ruling system should also undergo a series of reforms.

“Iran has always maintained that the only way to resolve Syria’s problem is the ballot box. Ballot box is recommended for the entire region,” he went on to say, according to a Farsi report by the president’s website.

He further expressed the hope that reforms are realized in Syria, stressing that such changes are necessary for the Arab country.

Meanwhile, he pointed to the recent US strike on a Syrian airbase on the pretext of an alleged chemical attack blamed on the Syrian president, and said such pretexts are “neither documented nor clear”.

Iran has proposed formation of “an international fact-finding committee” to investigate the matter, Rouhani said, reminding that both him and Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin had stated that “it will be easy” to find out about the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“What if this committee goes there and finds out this has been done by the terrorists? What will the US answer then?” Rouhani asked, as reported by Press TV. “What will become of Syria and the region’s situation if terrorists are to find out that the US will support them whenever they spread some gas?”

The American actions in Syria contradict the international law, logic, and other countries’ interests, he asserted, saying that those states, which cheer Washington for its involvement in the Arab country do so as it reinforces the terrorists.

450 Iranian Relics to Go on Display in Germany

The exhibition, displaying 446 historical objects of Iran, is slated to be launched in the German city on Thursday, April 13, Kargar said.

The historical items, dating back from the seventh millennium BC to the Achaemenid period (550-330 BC), can reflect Iran’s culture, history, and civilization, he said.

He noted that plans for the exhibition had been in the making for three years.

According to the official, the artifacts have been sent to Germany in standard packages with insurance coverage.

Kargar went on to say that the exhibition will be launched with a number of political, scientific and cultural figures in attendance.

Saudi Cleric Mocked for Remarks on Adulterous Storks!

According to a Farsi report by Al-Alam, a Saudi Mufti was mocked after stating that the male stork kills its mate if it learns about the female’s adultery.

Abdullah al-Suwailem said on a TV show that a French scientist had obtained such a result by observing the storks’ behaviour: among these birds, the penalty for the infidelity is death, as is in Islam.

He further claimed that the French scientist has converted to Islam after this study!

“The scientist picked up a pair of the storks’ eggs, replaced them with those of a hen, and installed a camera nearby,” he explained. “After the birds came out, the male stork started to blame the female. Then other storks joined it and killed the mate.”

Following his statements, social media users called on the Saudi authorities to stop the Mufti from appearing on TV.

The “male stork kills the female on charge of adultery” hashtag has been made on Twitter, and satirical comments are posted about the cleric.

Al-Suwailem had earlier sparked controversy by claiming that in Islam, leaving one’s prayers is more sinful than incest!
