Iranian FM Condoles with Egyptians in Arabic

“We condemn the cruel bombings of churches in Egypt and offer our condolences to Egyptian brothers,” Zarif said in an Arabic post on his Twitter account.

“The region needs unity against terrorism and extremism,” he went on to say in his Monday message.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman had earlier denounced the bomb explosions at two Coptic churches in various cities in northern Egypt, warning of bids to sow discord among followers of different divine religions.

“Such criminal measures are planned and implemented in order to incite sectarian strife and create terror and division among followers of divine religions,” Bahram Qassemi said on Sunday.

He stressed the importance of cooperation and vigilance among regional governments and nations to thwart such plots.

arabic zarif twitterarabic zarif twitter“We resolutely condemn any act of aggression against religious sites and gatherings and targeting of defenseless civilians under any pretext and with any motivation,” the Iranian spokesperson said.

In the first of the twin attacks in Egypt, at least 27 people were killed and 78 others injured after a bomb went off inside St. George’s Church in the Nile Delta city of Tanta.

A few hours later, a terrorist rushed toward St. Mark’s Cathedral in the coastal city of Alexandria, the historic seat of Christendom in Egypt, killing at least 16 people and wounding 41 others, the Interior Ministry said.

Later, the ISIS terrorist group in a statement claimed responsibility for both church bombings in the Arab country.

“US No-Fly Zone Plan for Syria a Nonstarter”

In a Farsi interview with ICANA, senior Iranian lawmaker Mohammad Rezaei commented on the US plan to create a no-fly zone over Syria. He said the move will not be successful.

“The plan by the US and Turkey to establish an air-exclusion zone will push the crises in Syria and in the region into a new phase, and will make the situation much worse and complicated,” said Rezaei, who sits on the Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission.

He also took a swipe at some officials of the US and certain other regional countries who said they would supply terrorists with air defence weapons.

He said the US missile strike at a Syrian airbase indicated Washington’s blatant support for terrorist groups.

The Iranian MP noted the allegation that Damascus used chemical arms in Idlib was just a fabricated excuse to implement the United States’ interventionist policies.

“Over the past few years and since the beginning of the Syria crisis, Western and Arab countries have been trying to implement scenarios such as the establishment of a no-fly zone and sending in modern weaponry, and they have given financial, political and arms support to terrorists,” he underlined.

He said the US direct military intervention in Syria’s conflict shows the American-Zionist scheme in the region has failed because they sought to use terrorists as a tool to set the stage for a change in Syria, but their attempts ended in a fiasco.

“In my point of view, Washington’s efforts to establish an air-exclusion zone will get nowhere, and the Syrian army as well as the resistance front backed by the people will definitely win over terrorists,” the parliamentarian underscored.

He said the creation of a no-fly zone by the US would amount to a violation of Syria’s sovereignty and international law.

Iranian, Russian Presidents Discuss US Syria Strike over Phone

In a phone call on Sunday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin stressed the importance of further supporting the Syrian people in their fight against Takfiri terrorists.

“We condemn the US missile attacks on Syria and regard them as a case of explicit violation of the sovereignty of an independent country,” the Iranian president said.

“It is imperative that this unilateral US move be discussed and condemned at the United Nations Security Council,” he added.

He also deplored the use of chemical arms in Syria, saying, “Reports indicate that terrorists have access to chemical weapons and the US strikes will prompt terrorist groups to use chemical weapons once again.”

At least 86 people were killed in a gas attack in the Syrian town of Khan Shaykhun in Idlib Province. Anti-Damascus militants and Western countries rushed to blame Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for the incident, without providing any evidence to support their accusations.

Rouhani emphasized that the US airstrikes against Syria were an attempt to strengthen terrorists and lashed out at some regional countries for their support for Washington’s move.

“We should not allow the path created in the fight against terrorism to change through some countries’ support for the recent US measure,” the Iranian president pointed out.

He reiterated Tehran’s stance that the crisis in Syria can only be solved through political and not military approaches and expressed the Islamic Republic’s readiness to hold consultation and cooperation with Russia on the battle against terrorists.

He warned that the US attacks would create a rift among countries in fighting against terrorism and divert the political negotiations about Syria into a military direction.

The Russian president, for his part, condemned the US strikes against Syria as an unacceptable move and a bid to support terrorists.

He said the United Nations has acknowledged that the Syrian government does not possess chemical weapons, adding that Washington’s missile strikes were a pre-planned move which would fail to help solve the Syrian crisis.

Putin called for the strengthening of unilateral and multilateral cooperation among Iran and regional countries to fight terrorists.

US warships deployed to the eastern Mediterranean launched a barrage of 59 Tomahawk missiles against Shayrat Airfield, southeast of the western Syrian city of Homs, on Friday.

Washington ordered the assault after accusing the Syrian government of President Bashar al-Assad of carrying out a chemical attack against Khan Shaykhun.

Iran Condemns Deadly Attacks on Egypt Churches

Bahram Qassemi

In a message on Sunday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi expressed condolences to the Egyptian government and nation over deaths in the “heinous crime.”

Iran decisively condemns any assault against religious sites, congregations, and ordinary and defenseless people with any purpose, the spokesman noted.

“Such criminal moves are designed and carried as part of attempts to foment religious sedition and create horror and division among followers of major celestial religions,” he deplored, stressing that such plots would be thwarted by cooperation and consultation among the regional governments and nations.

At least 27 people were killed in an explosion inside a church in the Egyptian Nile Delta city of Tanta on Sunday, as another blast killed 16 in front of a church in the coastal city of Alexandria.

Daesh (ISIL, also known as ISIS) terrorist group claimed responsibility for both attacks, saying they were carried out by two of its fighters wearing suicide vests.

The bombings were the latest in a series of assaults on Egypt’s Christian minority, who make up about 10 percent of the population and have been repeatedly targeted by armed groups.

US Strike on Syria Strategic Mistake: Iran’s Leader

“What the Americans did was a strategic mistake and error and they are repeating the [same] mistakes as their predecessors,” the Leader said in a meeting with senior commanders of Iran’s Armed Forces on Sunday.

“Former American officials created ISIS [terrorists] or helped them, and the current officials are also strengthening ISIS or a group similar to it,” the Leader added.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Ayatollah Khamenei warned that the threat posed by such terrorist groups would backfire on Americans in the future, adding, “Europe is currently in trouble for the wrong step that it took for bolstering Takfiris, and [European] people are not secure at [their] homes and on the street, and America is repeating the same wrong step.”

The Leader then noted that the Americans were quite apt to committing crimes and acts of aggression as they had already carried out such measures in other parts of the world.

US Strike on Syria Strategic Mistake: Iran's Leader

Ayatollah Khamenei said some Western countries fully supported the former Iraqi dictator, Saddam Hussein, during the eight-year imposed war against Iran (1980-88), adding that “hypocrite” European governments, which are now claiming that chemical weapons have been used in Syria, gave tons of chemical weapons to Saddam to use them in attacking the Iranian city of Sardasht and the Iraqi city of Halabjah.

Ayatollah Khamenei also warned against the enemy’s plot to undermine the morale of the Iranian officials, nation and the Armed Forces, saying that the enemy was trying to create a feeling of weakness among Iranians through psychological tactics.

However, the Leader stated, the Islamic Republic has proved that it would not succumb to any unfounded remarks and wrong measures taken by enemies, and the Iranian officials and people, who believe in the Islamic Revolution, would not yield to threats due to their trust in God.

11 Killed in Second Egyptian Church Bombing

11 Killed in Second Egyptian Church Bombing

Thirty-five people were wounded in the Alexandria blast at Saint Mark’s church where Coptic Pope Tawadros II had been attending a Palm Sunday Mass.

A Coptic Church official said that Tawadros had left the church before the blast, whose death toll has reached 11, according to AFP.

An earlier blast at a church in Tanta, north of Cairo, killed 25 people and wounded dozens, the health ministry said, in an apparent attack on Coptic worshippers.

The ISIS terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the deadly explosions.

Copts, who make up about one tenth of Egypt’s population of more than 92 million and who celebrate Easter next weekend, have been targeted by several attacks in recent months.

Pope Francis is due to visit Cairo on April 28-29 to show solidarity with Egypt’s Christian community.

Iranian, Syrian Presidents Condemn US Strike over Phone

President Rouhani “expressed strong condemnation of the blatant US aggression on the Syrian territories,” the Syrian state news agency SANA quoted a presidential office statement as saying on Sunday.

“President al-Assad said that the US failed in achieving the goal behind this attack which is to raise the morale of the US-backed terrorist groups after the victories achieved by the Syrian Army,” the agency said.

Some 60 US Tomahawk missiles were fired from US warships deployed to the Mediterranean at the Shayrat airfield southeast of the western Syria city of Homs on Friday.

Assad reaffirmed the determination of the Syrian people and armed forces to continue their struggle against terrorism, SANA said. He also expressed gratitude to Iran for standing by Syria in the battle, it added.

Iran has been lending military advisory support to the Syrian Army and the Iraqis in their battle against foreign-backed terrorist groups.

Washington ordered the assault after accusing Syria of carrying out a chemical attack against the town of Khan Shaykhun in the northwestern province of Idlib on Tuesday.

Also on Sunday, Rouhani, who has already urged an investigation into the matter, further questioned the circumstances surrounding the assault which came without a UN Security Council or US congressional permission.

“How do they allow themselves to do this? By what right and logic?” he asked, delivering an address in Tehran.

“Has anyone entrusted the authority of leading the world with the US? Has anyone chosen the US as the world police?” he questioned.

“Still worse are the countries from our own region, which cheer the US invasion and clap for America. Why do you rush yourselves into encouraging the invader and the oppressor?” he said.

“Don’t worry. One day it will be your turn,” Rouhani added.

Separately, Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani addressed the issue of the attack, calling it “a start and not a closure.”

“You have fanned the flames of the crisis, whose consequences will befall on you,” he stated.

He also asked why the attack had preceded any fact-finding operation, and likened it to the American invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, which had failed to succeed in the face of terrorism.

Ebrahim Raeisi Officially Declares Presidential Bid

Hojjatoleslam Raeisi, who is the current custodian of the Holy Shrine of Imam Reza (PBUH) in the northeastern Iranian city of Mashhad, officially declared his presidential bid in a statement released on Sunday.

In his statement, he stressed that he has never been willing to be in power, but this time he could not turn down the numerous requests he had received from people and the elites for running as a presidential candidate.

Raeisi also regretted that the country is in deep trouble and crisis, vowing to restore relief to Iranian people and save the country if he is elected, according to media reports in Farsi.

His statement came as he was earlier shortlisted by the national assembly of the Popular Front of the Islamic Revolution Forces (PFIRF), and had garnered the highest number of votes (2,147) from the conservative coalition.

However, he did not wait for the PFIRF to declare him as their candidate, and seems to be running as an independent conservative rival for President Hassan Rouhani in the country’s 12th presidential election due to be held on May 19.

Raeisi previously served positions in Iran’s Judicial system, such as Attorney General from 2014 to 2016, and Deputy Chief Justice from 2004 to 2014 for ten years. He was also the Prosecutor and Deputy Prosecutor of Tehran in the 1980’s and the 1990’s. He is also a member of Assembly of Experts from South Khorasan Province, being elected for the first time in 2006 election

Nuclear Technology, a Necessity for Iran: President

rouhani

Iran’s President Rouhani on Sunday stressed that having nuclear technology is absolutely crucial for the country, saying the constant emphasis laid by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei on continuing the development of the technology has been just and appropriate.

According to a Farsi report by IRNA, addressing a ceremony to celebrate the 11th anniversary of the National Day of Nuclear Technology held in Iran International Conference Centre in Tehran, President Rouhani noted that the Iranian nation, who, for years, in practice and with their resistance, shouted the slogan of “Nuclear energy is our absolute right” patiently, was chanting the right slogan and endeavouring to achieve a high aspiration all these years.

This is a great skill to make the world powers in Lausanne, Geneva, Vienna and New York hear the slogan chanted in Iran’s streets and convince them to agree to the Iranian nation’s legitimate demand by drafting and approving an international bill which has very precise technological, diplomatic and legal dimensions, he added.

“Although it is very important that an entire nation demands having nuclear energy as its absolute right, besides people’s presence, will and quote, these are a country’s experts who should put the slogan into practice technically. Our lawyers and diplomats are the ones who should defend this absolute right in the national and international communities.”

Iranian organizations, gallant youths and experts have completed 42 important nuclear projects over the course of 12 months to prove it to the nation and the world that nuclear energy is being used peacefully in different sectors of the country and numerous aspects of the Iranians’ life, he went on to say.

“Efforts were underway by some countries to deprive Iran from the right to develop nuclear technology. However, currently, Iran is a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Expert Group on Multilateral Approaches to the Nuclear Fuel Cycle (MNA) and has officially joined the group of countries with the uranium enrichment technology.”

President Rouhani said the world has acknowledged that Iran has indigenized the nuclear technology.
