‘Iran Has Plans to Counter US Possible Pullout from JCPOA’

Iranian Lawmakers Endorse Anti-Israel Motion ahead of Quds Day

Iranian lawmakers are having busy days. Key and rapid developments in the region and the world as well as a meeting of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Russia’s Saint Petersburg have prompted Iranian lawmakers to announce their positions on major international issues as well as the Iran nuclear deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

US President Donald Trump’s anti-Iran remarks and his threat to pull out of the JCPOA have

drawn extensive and mixed reactions, bringing to the fore discussions on Tehran’s reactions to Washington’s new policies. Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani stressed in an interview with NTV that Iran has an organized plan to continue its nuclear activities.

Larijani: Iran OKs Plan on Responding to US; Americans Will Regret

The parliament speaker, who has travelled to Russia to attend the IPU meeting, talked to reporters on the sidelines of the event.

“Trump is not responsible for confirming Iran’s compliance with its obligations under the JCPOA; rather, it is the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) which is responsible, and it has, so far, corroborated Iran’s compliance eight times,” he said.

He referred to his meetings with parliament speakers of other countries in recent days, and said the United States is regarded as a “trouble-making country” these days. He then touched upon Washington’s sanctions on Moscow, saying, “It is not only Iran that has problems with the US. Other countries also believe that the US has not treated them well.

He said US sanctions against Iran will be a nonstarter, according to a Farsi report by ICANA.

“Other countries do not agree with the US [on this issue], and if Trump maintains his approach, Iran is likely to react to that,” said Larijani.

Larijani was questioned by reporters whether Iran has prepared a plan to continue its nuclear activities if Washington withdraws from the JCPOA.

“Yes,” Larijani responded.

“We have an organized plan and a specific law. Recently, too, we decided in parliament what measures to adopt against US actions. Iran has a clear program vis-à-vis Washington’s different scenarios. We will do something that’ll make the Americans sorry,” Larijani noted.

MP Warns France about Its Call for Non-Nuclear Talks

Saffar Nazari, a member of Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, has also expressed Iran’s view on the nuclear issue. He told ICANA that Iran will not enter into talks with the West outside the framework of the JCPOA.

He also reacted to remarks made by the French president, who had said in a meeting with Trump that Iran should be controlled and held answerable regarding its ballistic missile activities.

“Emmanuel Macron’s talks with Trump were not related to the JCPOA, and it should be said seriously that the missile industry [of Iran] is not negotiable,” said the MP.

“French officials have been told in a straightforward manner that Iran will not accept to return to talks on the JCPOA, and accordingly, it was decided that they rectify their previous positions in that regard,” said the legislator.

Iran Has Plans for US Possible Withdrawal from JCPOA

Mohamad Mahdi Eftekhari, another Iranian lawmaker, believes that Trump is not able to pull out of the JCPOA unilaterally.

“Trump’s claims about Iran’s performance regarding the JCPOA will worsen the situation and isolate Washington on the international stage,” said the legislator.

“The team from Iran’s Foreign Ministry first sat down for talks with the issue of ‘distrust in the US’ in mind, and Iranian diplomats had envisioned Washington’s possible withdrawal from the JCPOA, and the necessary mechanisms to deal with it had already been worked out,” he said.

Also, parliamentarian Behrouz Nemati told ICANA that “the United States’ 40-year objective is to overthrow the Iranian government.”

“The imposition of sanctions by one of the signatories to the JCPOA and the violation of the deal are impossible and unacceptable by Iran. Moreover, Iran and the five European countries which are parties to the agreement are opposed to the addition of a new addendum to the JCPOA,” he said.

Iran Favouring Nuke-Free World

Also present at the IPU meeting was top Iranian MP Mostafa Kavakebian. He highlighted Iran’s opposition to the proliferation of nuclear weapons, and said Iran favours a world free from nuclear weapons, and nuclear arms states should move toward disarmament.

He was speaking at a special IPU meeting on the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

“We should have not only a Middle East, but a world free from nuclear weapons. Iran’s initiative of creating a Middle East region free from nuclear arms presented in 1974 as well as the fatwa by Leader of the Islamic Revolution [Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei] which bans weapons of mass destruction, especially nuclear weapons, clearly shows our position on the issue,” he said.

“Unfortunately, international efforts to remove the major threat of nuclear weapons have been futile so far, and the most important reason behind this failure is those possessing nuclear weapons, which have not adopted any serious measures to live up to their commitments regarding denuclearization.”

81-Year-Old Iranian Woman Wins Gold in China Athletics Games

81-Year-Old Iranian Woman Wins Gold in China Athletics Games

81-year-old Iranian woman Fatemeh Heshmati has been crowned the champion in international track and field competitions in China.

She has been doing sports professionally in the city of Shiraz in southern Iranian Fars province for years. She has already attended international competitions several times.

The lady’s high motivation at the age of 81 has surprised, and at the same time received compliments from the Chinese. News of Heshmati’s success is making headlines inside the country as well.

She was born in the city of Abadan, southwestern Iran, and migrated to Shiraz after the end of the eight-year Iraqi imposed war on Iran in the 1980s. Although she suffers from wartime wounds and has shrapnel inside her head, she keeps trying hard.

She says she has done whatever it takes to encourage young and old. The Shahrvand newspaper has conducted an interview with this Iranian athlete. The highlights of the interview follows.

First, tell us about the international competitions in China where you won a gold and one silver medal.

The contests held for veteran athletes and elderly people included a 5-km race-walking and a 1-km running event. Most competitors aged between 30 to 50. I took part in the event in the 80-year-old age group along with a Chinese lady. There were around 30 contestants at the starting line, but they competed separately in different age groups. The Chinese woman, who was younger than me, grabbed the gold. I received the silver medal. I didn’t know that she was my rival; otherwise I might have been able to overtake her. Of course, I got a gold medal as well. There were other Iranian competitors, who also received medals.

Who did sponsor you in the competition?

I’ve been a member of a sports club in Shiraz for 25 years now. We attended a match in Tehran recently. I finished first in my age group. After that, it was decided that I take part in the China competitions.

How did the Chinese and spectators who were there react to your presence at the event?

The Chinese behaved perfectly. They were so happy that they took pictures with me and filmed me. It was so interesting for them to see a woman at my age could take part in the competitions. Of course, I received no prizes. But it was so great for me to see their behaviour was so good. They liked me very much and I could feel it.

When did you begin to do sport? Tell us a little bit about your background.

I have been interested in race-walking since childhood. Even during the war when I was living in Abadan, I used to exercise at a football (soccer) stadium there. After that when I came to Shiraz, I did sport and race-walking whenever I could. One day when I was running on the track, a lady called me and asked if I was an athlete. Then she invited me to join a sports club, and now it’s been 25 years that I’m doing exercises. I have attended international competitions. I once got a gold medal in Malaysia.

Don’t you get tired of doing sports?

I never get tired. I’m proud of being able to do sports professionally at this age. I never feel old. I have lost one of my seven children has died. My husband, who had been wounded at war, passed away, too. My children are always happy at my successes and they encourage me. I attend competitions to promote the culture of doing sports among people.

The top story today was the remarks made by Iranian officials about the European Union’s call for negotiation with Tehran on its missile program. They particularly covered the warning by Ali Akbar Velayati, an international aide to Iran’s Leader, who said the EU is not allowed to raise the issue of talks on Iran’s regional presence and missile program.

Newspapers also covered the defeat of secessionist Kurds led by Masoud Barzani from the Iraqi central government in Kirkuk, and rumours of their independence referendum being suspended after mediation of Iranian General Qassemi Soleimani.

The Shahrvand newspaper dedicated its front page photo to the dire situation of displaced Rohingya Muslims and Iran’s dispatch of medical and food aid to the minority group.

Some reformist papers also highlighted domestic issues including the 2021 presidential election and criticism of conservatives.

Czech Republic Interested in Investing in Iran’s Steel Industry

Czech Republic Interested in Investing in Iran’s Steel Industry

The Czech Republic’s Deputy Minister of Industry, Eduard Muřický, who is on a state visit to Iran, said his visit is mainly aimed at closely watching Iran’s progress in steel industry.

Iran has made significant progress in the industry and this has prompted the Czech Republic to invest in this area and import Iran’s productions, a Farsi report by IRNA quoted him as saying.

In a meeting with the top managers of Iran’s Mobarakeh Steel Company (MSC), the Czech official went on saying his country has prepared the ground for installing some technologies in the production of steel.

The Czech Republic is interested in launching a joint project with Iran, particularly with the Mobarakeh Steel Company, he added.

The meeting was also attended by the Czech Republic’s ambassador to Tehran Svatopluk Čumba.

For his part, the ambassador called Iran a large developing country and will play a key role in the international affairs in future.

Čumba also said he was moved by the perspective set forth by the Mobarakeh Steel Company’s managers and added Iran and Czech Republic can tap into their capacities for further cooperation.

He went on to say that many of the residents of Isfahan have a positive impression of the Czech Republic as well as the cooperation which the country used to have with the MSC.

During the meeting, the participants also explored ways to expand industrial ties between the two sides.

Mobarakeh Steel Company, located in west of Isfahan, is the largest steel maker of MENA (Middle East & Northern Africa) region, and one of the largest industrial complexes operating in Iran.

German Couple Takes Cycling Trip to Iran

German Couple Takes Cycling Trip to Iran

The couple entered Iran from the land border of Astara in the northern province of Gilan, said a Farsi report by IRNA.

In an interview, Michael Jurgen said he along with his wife began their journey six months ago. “We cycled from Germany and arrived in Iran passing through central and eastern European countries as well as Russia and Azerbaijan Republic.”

He described Iranians as ‘very nice and hospitable people’, adding, “I’m sure that we will have a memorable trip to Iran.”

The 29-year-old German tourist said getting familiar with the Iranian customs and cultures was the main reason behind their cycling trip from Germany to Iran.

“We are determined to cycle Iran from north to south within the next 2 months. We are eagerly waiting to see the attractive sites in Isfahan and Bandar Abbas.”

Leader Blasts Europe for Stances on Iran’s Missiles, Regional Presence

Iran’s Leader Condemns Massacre of Indian Muslims

Speaking in a Wednesday meeting with a group of elite students in Tehran, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei strongly condemned Europe for reiterating the US remarks about Iran’s regional presence and missile program, saying that such issues are none of their business.

“Why do YOU have missiles? Why do YOU have nuclear weapons?” Ayatollah Khamenei asked.

“It is not acceptable for us that Europe repeats the US bullying against Iran,” he added.

The Leader also referred to Trump’s remarks against the nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers, known as Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), and Europe’s support for Iran on this issue.

“The European governments underlined the issue of JCPOA and condemned the US president’s remarks. We welcome such stances, but it is not enough that they only ask the US not to scrap the deal,” Ayatollah Khamenei added, noting that the JCPOA is to their benefit.

“We will not tear the nuclear deal apart as long as the other side does not do so, but if they ripped it apart, we will shred it,” he went on to say.

The Leader further asked Europe to stand against the US practical actions and refrain from interfering in Iran’s defensive issues.

Trump’s Stupidity Shouldn’t Distract Iran from US Deceitfulness

The Leader further hit back at Trump’s anti-Iran allegations and said US President Donald Trump shows stupidity, but this should not distract Iran from the Americans’ deceitfulness.

“I don’t want to waste my time by responding to the rants and whoppers of the rude president of the US. It is a waste of time to respond to such a person.”

“The US is an agent of the international Zionism. The US is the creator of ISIS and Takfiri movement. Do you expect the US not to be angry with a force which is standing against ISIS?”

“They are angry because today the Islamic Republic has managed to foil their plots in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and other places,” the Leader added.

“The US president is showing stupidity, but this should not cause us to ignore the US mischief,” he added.

Norway Solar Firm Inks $4bn Deal with Iran

Norway Solar Firm Inks $4bn Deal with Iran

Norway’s Saga Energy signed the deal with Iran’s Amin Energy Developers to install two gigawatts of solar panels in multiple sites around the central desert region.

The contract was signed at the residence of Norwegian Ambassador to Tehran Lars Nordrum.

“Norway is fully committed to the JCPOA (nuclear deal) and this is proof that we have taken the opening very seriously, and we will see more investment very soon,” Nordrum told AFP.

It comes just days after Trump gave a bellicose speech, imposing further sanctions on Iran and calling for European allies to curb their financial dealings with the country.

The new solar project is being financed by a consortium of European private and state investors, and backed by a sovereign guarantee from the government of Iran.

“We hope to build a factory in Iran to build the panels so that we are also generating jobs,” said Saga’s development manager Gaute Steinkopf at the signing.

“I’d like to thank Norway, which has always been one of the best friends to Iran, for this exciting opportunity,” said Saeid Zakeri, head of international affairs for Amin.

The deal was signed less than a month after UK renewables investor Quercus inked a deal worth over half a billion euros to build and operate another 600-megawatt (MW) solar farm in Iran

The work located in central Iran is expected to take three years, with the project coming online in 100 MW phases every six months, Quercus said of its first project outside Europe.

“As Iran opens for business, we are delighted to be taking a leading role in building the country’s renewable energy infrastructure at such an early stage of its development,” Quercus CEO Diego Biasi said in mid-September.

Iran currently has 63 MW of installed solar capacity, chiefly in the cities of Yazd, Kerman, Isfahan and Hamadan. This figure is meager for a country with over 300 sunny days and an average of 2,800 hours of sunshine.

There is an ambitious plan to expand the renewable capacity in the face of an acute air pollution problem in major cities and towns. Iran’s overall power capacity stands at 77,000 megawatts, which is mostly generated in thermal power plants using fossil fuel.

Before Quercus’s deal in September, contracts for about 950 MW of renewable energy projects had also been signed.

They are part of the plan to add 1000 MW of renewable energy to the national grid each year in the next five years but the ultimate goal is to establish a 26,000 MW renewable capacity with $60 billion of investment.

Iran Raps UN for Silence over ISIS Crimes against Assyrians

In an address to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Russia’s Saint Petersburg, Yonathan Betkolia slammed the human rights groups as well as the UN for their silence over ISIS crimes against the Assyrians and said these entities have closed their eyes to the these crimes.

According to a Farsi report by ICANA, he also referred to the developments in Iraq and Syria which are historical homes to Assyrians and said since the emergence of ISIS in these two countries, the Assyrians have been oppressed.

“These people have seen the most deadly strikes on their thousands-year-old identity and history and were forced to leave their homes.”

According to Betkolia this comes as the so-called democratic and rights groups as well as the United Nations remained silent towards the humanitarian tragedy committed by ISIS.

Iran President Congratulates Kyrgyz Counterpart on Election Victory

In a message of congratulations to the Kyrgyz president-elect on Tuesday, President Rouhani expressed confidence that Tehran-Bishkek ties would continue to grow in Jeenbekov’s tenure.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran sees no limits to the expansion of relations with the Republic of Kyrgyzstan in all fields,” the Iranian president added, expressing the hope that implementation of the bilateral agreements would enhance “friendly and brotherly ties” between the two nations.

Iran President Congratulates Kyrgyz Counterpart on Election Victory

Former Prime Minister Sooronbay Jeenbekov won presidential election in Kyrgyzstan on October 15. Backed by outgoing President Almazbek Atambayev’s Social Democratic party, Jeenbekov received 54.3 percent of the about 1.7 million votes, making a run-off unnecessary.
