Baghdad Hosts Security Meeting between Iran, Russia, Syria, Iraq

During the Sunday meeting of the Intelligence Center of Iran, Russia, Iraq, and Syria chaired by Iraq’s Director of Military Intelligence Major General Saad Mezher Al-Alaq, the participants discussed activities of the four countries in the security and intelligence fields and counter-terrorism.

Speaking at the session, Major General Alaq expressed his gratitude to Iran for supporting the Iraqi nation in the fight against Daesh terrorists and said although Daesh was defeated in Iraq, vigilance should be exercised to counter their activities to insecure the Arab country under new names.

The Iranian ambassador to Iraq, Iraj Masjejdi, also praised the role of the intelligence center in the collapse of Daesh and thanked all members of the quadrilateral coalition, including Russians and Syrians.

On November 19, Daesh terrorists were flushed out of their last stronghold in Syria’s Al-Bukamal. The city’s liberation marked an end to the group’s self-proclaimed caliphate it had declared in 2014.

Daesh militants made swift advances in northern and western Iraq over the summer of 2014, after capturing large areas of Syria.

But the timely support by Iran helped Syria and Iraq fight off Daesh. In addition, formation of military units by volunteers in Iraq, known as Hashd al-Shaabi or Popular Mobilization Units, blunted the edge of Daesh offensive and later made the terror group withdraw from much of the territories it had occupied.

Man Shot Down after Trying to Enter Iran President’s Office with Machete

According to the deputy governor of Tehran province, the 35-year-old man ignored the warnings of security forces and tried to enter the presidential palace in Tehran.

The man, who attacked the security guards with his machete, was finally stopped by the guards who shot and injured him.

He has been transferred to the hospital, and his identity and motivation is being investigated, the deputy governor said.

Number of Flights over Iran’s Sky Tripled: Commander

Brigadier General Farzad Esmaili says flights passing through Iran’s airspace feel safe and secure because of the presence of Iran’s strong air force.

This comes despite the tight sanctions imposed on Iran’s aviation industry over the past years, he added.

The commander admitted that most flights were cancelled in the wake of the recent heavy snow in Tehran and a number of other provinces.

“It is right that most flights were cancelled in the wake of the recent snow which covered most parts of Iran but a brief review of the conditions of the flights in countries equipped with the highest technologies reveals that they are also challenging with lots of problems during snowy days,” a Farsi report by Fars News Agency quoted him as saying.

The general praised Iran Air and a number of other Iranian airlines saying these airlines kept alive Iran’s airspace by offering good services to their domestic and foreign passengers.

Back in August 2017, Esmaili had noted that at least 1,400 planes cross Iran’s skies every day in what he described as a proof of the country’s airspace security for regional and transregional airliners.

“Today, Iran has been chosen [by airliners] as the safest air corridor in the Middle East,” he noted at the time.

Official figures show around 450 planes crossed Iran’s skies every day in 2014. However, the insurgency that ISIS militants waged in Iraq as well as the conflict in Ukraine pushed the number up to as high as 900 planes per day the next year, marking an increase of 100 percent.

The diplomatic crisis between Qatar and Saudi Arabia and its allies also forced the tiny Persian Gulf state to use Iran’s airspace for its international flights, and this in turn led to a 20-percent increase in the number of flights crossing the Iranian skies.

Baquer Namazi Not Released from Jail: Iran Judiciary

“The individual has not been released,” Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejei said in a weekly press conference on Sunday.

“Like many other prisoners, he has gone on leave,” he added.

Namazi had applied to leave the prison only for three days, Ejei further said, adding that it was later extended over his health condition.

His remarks came after a US State Department official said recently that the 81-year-old dual national was temporarily released from prison over health concerns after the US and Iran conducted backchannel discussions about releasing American prisoners.

State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert took to Twitter, saying, “We welcome the release of Baquer Namazi given his deteriorating health, but we note that his release is only temporary. We call for the immediate and full release of the Namazi family, including his son Siamek, as well as other Americans unjustly held by the Iranian government”.

Namazi was imprisoned in February 2016, after traveling to Tehran to secure the release of his son Siamak, an American-Iranian businessman, who was detained in October 2015. They were both charged with espionage and collaborating with a foreign government and sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Austria to Allocate €200m for Iran’s First Nuclear Hospital

The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) says Austrian banks have allocated €200 million for the procurement of the equipment required for a nuclear hospital in Tehran.

“One of the most important phases in the construction of the hospital is the provision of equipment on which negotiations have been held with an Austrian company,” said AEOI Spokesman Behrouz Kamalvandi as quoted by the Persian-language Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA).

He said a considerable amount of time has been spent on the conclusion of the contract.

“The Austrian side has undertaken to provide the funding. One bank will provide the financing, and another will guarantee the funds granted. The process has been fruitful with the help of the Central Bank and Investment Organization,” the spokesman noted.

He said the €200 million provided by Austrian banks will be repaid from the revenues of the hospital once it becomes operational.

The contract on the construction of Iran’s first nuclear hospital was signed in 2015 in a ceremony attended by the AEOI chief and health minister.

Security Forces Seize 2.9-Tonne Drug Haul in SE Iran

Following a sensitive round-the-clock operation, the intelligence forces managed to seize a 2,869-kilogram haul of illicit drugs in the province.

The illicit drugs loaded onto two Toyota pickup trucks were smuggled into Sistan and Baluchestan province, a Farsi report by Fars News Agency said.

This is largest haul of illicit drugs seized by Iranian intelligence forces over the past years.

With its 900-kilometre common border with Afghanistan, Iran has always been used by the smugglers as the main conduit for transferring Afghan drugs to narcotics kingpins in Europe.

Iran has been fighting drug-trafficking over the past three decades paying a heavy economic and human price.

Nearly 4,000 Iranian police forces have lost their lives during the fight in the past four decades.  Meanwhile, Iran has spent over $700 million on sealing its borders and preventing the transit of narcotics destined for European, Arab and Central Asian countries.

Fire at Iraqi Hotel Kills Two Iranian Pilgrims (+Video)

The fire started at Al-Nasir Hotel, located in Najaf’s Old City quarter, which was accommodating Iranian pilgrims.

A Farsi report by the IRIB News Agency  quoted an official with Iran’s Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization as saying that two women died as the result of smoke inhalation in the blaze and another woman has been transferred to hospital for treatment.

Earlier, Najaf police had announced that no one has been killed in the incident.

Initial reports said over a hundred pilgrims suffered from smoke inhalation.

The fire was caused by burning of a curtain close to a heater in one of the rooms in the third floor of the hotel.

In December 2017, in a similar incident that broke out inside al-Qabtan Hotel in the city of Najaf, dozens of people were wounded, including several Iranian pilgrims.

Governmental offices and business centres in Baghdad and several other provinces experience similar problems every now and then.

Najaf hosts the shrine of the First Shiite Imam, Imam Ali (PBUH), and is frequented by thousands of Iranians each year.

“Iran to Export 3m Barrels of Oil to Russia Monthly”

Iran’s Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh says Tehran has signed a contract with Moscow under which the country will export three million barrels of crude oil to Russia on a monthly basis.

Speaking in a press conference on Sunday, the oil minister noted that Iran’s crude exports in the ten months to January 2018 rose by 60,000 barrels year on year.

“Also, production and exports of oil have increased by more than one million barrels following the [conclusion of the] Iran nuclear deal,” the minister noted.

He further said construction of supply lines to take Iran’s crude to Iraq have been completed.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Zanganeh said production of natural gas at the South Pars Oil and Gas Field stood at 285 million cubic metres in 2012, adding the figure reached 553 million cubic meters last month.

The oil minister underlined that the contracts signed with France’s energy giant Total, the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) and Iran’s Petropars are going according to schedule.

Zanganeh further said Trump wants to create the impression that the situation for foreign investors in Iran is unstable.

“Trump is suspending the Iran nuclear deal every four months, which somehow causes instability. We cannot say Trump’s decisions have no impact on the decisions made by Total and other companies, but we will go ahead with what we’re doing,” the minister said.

He also said OPEC is to meet in June to decide on whether or not to curtail its output.

Iran FM, Philippine Official Call for Expansion of Ties

During the Sunday meeting held in Tehran, the two sides underlined the reinforcement and promotion of bilateral ties between Tehran and Manila, particularly in the fields of economy, energy, and petrochemistry.

De Venecia, who is also the Chairman of International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP), also conferred with Zarif on the development of cooperation between Asian political parties.

Diplomatic relations between Tehran and Manila started on January 22, 1964.

As of February 2016, Iran has been one of the six nations with which the Philippines has a Joint Economic Commission at a ministerial level.

There is a community of thousands of Iranians in the Philippines including many international students drawn by the country’s low-cost English education.

On the other hand, many Filipino maritime labourers are working in Iran, particularly in the Persian Gulf island of Kish. The two sides have agreed to ensure better labour conditions for these workers. Manila has also expressed its preparedness to open a consulate in Kish considering the huge number of its nationals working in the island.
