Iran-EU Expert Talks Open in Brussels ahead of Ministerial Meeting

Araqchi arrived in the Belgian capital on Monday, May 14, heading a delegation of experts from different economic state institutions.

Upon arrival, Araqchi met and exchanged views with Secretary General of the European Union External Action Service (EEAS) Helga Schmid.

Meetings between Iranian and European experts kicked off on Monday and will run until Tuesday, May 15, before Iranian and European foreign ministers sit down for talks.

Araqchi’s trip comes ahead of a visit to Brussels by Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif who is to meet with his German, French and British counterparts as well as EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini.

Zarif will arrive in Brussels on Tuesday as the last leg of his three-nation tour, which earlier took him to Beijing and Moscow. While in China and Russia, the Iranian top diplomat discussed the US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal and ways to preserve the 2015 agreement.

In the aftermath of Washington’s pullout, Europeans are seeking ways to protect the interests of their firms doing business in Iran and help them escape the brunt of the upcoming US sanctions.

Senior EU politicians recently threatened that the 28-nation bloc is ready to challenge any move that may harm their businesses in the Iranian market at the World Trade Organization (WTO).

US Relocation of Embassy Not to Go Unpunished: Iran’s Larijani

Addressing an emergency meeting of the IPU’s Permanent Palestine Committee in Tehran, Larijani underlined that the US doesn’t remain committed to any treaty.

“The provocative moves by the US to withdraw from the JCPOA and relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem al-Quds will create more tensions in the region and the world,” he said during the Monday meeting.

He then called on Islamic states to get united against the imprudent and illegitimate move of US President Donald Trump to recognise Jerusalem al-Quds as Israel’s capital.

Larijani referred to the widespread objections by many Arab states to the US move to relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem al-Quds and added the objections need to be backed by some serious practical steps.

“Today all the world has come to this conclusion that the US is the origin of chaos and insecurity in the whole world.”

He then referred to the US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal and said the US remains committed to no international treaty.

“One day it violates the Paris Climate Agreement and breaches its customs duty with China and the EU. Then, the other day, under pressure, it retreats and resumes its earlier agreements with the EU. One day, it sets unjust laws for entrance of immigrants from Islamic states and the other day, it withdraws from the JCPOA which was signed by itself. One day it says will not remain in Syria and the other day urges regional states to provide it with money for remaining in Syria,” he noted.

Iran’s parliament speaker then added the US has been supporting terrorism since a long time ago and added the US officials have confessed that Washington created ISIS.

“This shows that the US is suffering from decision-making crisis and deals with the international issues in an unconsidered manner. The US president can’t recognize the long-term fallouts of his decisions.”

Larijani underlined that today the Palestinians need assistance from freedom-seeking people across the world more than ever and added backing the oppressed nation of Palestine is not only a humanitarian move but also a considered measure to help those people who have paid a heavy price for defending the Islamic World.

He lashed out at the international silence over the horrible developments in the Palestinian lands and said the Palestinians want to have the right to decide for themselves.

Larijani then referred to the Zionist regime’s repeated failures in the region and said the latest developments initiated by Israel are aimed at covering up its defeats.

He finally called on the Islamic states to get united in fight against the US’ unjust move against the Palestinians.

Israeli Forces Kill 18 Palestinians, Wound over 500 near Gaza Border

According to Palestine Al Yawm television network, at least 18 people were killed on Monday by Israeli forces near the Gaza border as protests intensified on the 70th anniversary of Israel’s founding. Over 520 people were reported wounded.

Three kids were among the dead, the report added.

The Israeli army said 10,000 Gazans were demonstrating in 10 different locations along the border. It said thousands more were located in gathering points several hundred meters from the fence.

The killings have drawn international criticism, but the United States, which has angered the Palestinians and Muslims by relocating its embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv, has echoed Israel in accusing Gaza’s ruling Hamas movement of instigating violence.

The protests are scheduled to culminate on Tuesday, the day Palestinians mourn as the “Nakba” or “Catastrophe” when, in 1948, hundreds of thousands of them were driven out of their homes.

The Israeli military claims its troops are defending the border and firing in accordance with the rules of engagement.

Palestinian witnesses said Israeli aircraft also dropped flammable material on Monday to burn tires that protesters had stacked in preparation for them to be set on fire and rolled at the fence.

The Israelis also fired tear gas at people inside the tented encampments that have sprung up along the border, witnesses said.

Rageh Canyon; Paradise at Heart of Desert

Rageh Canyon is located 20 km from Rafsanjan, near the two eco-tourism attractions of the province, namely Meymand Village and Shahdad kaluts.

The sharp cones, eroded pillars and columns, arches and striped walls of up to 100 metres high are among the special parts of this region, a report by Mehr News Agency said.

Passing through the valley’s slopes, you encounter big and small holes, some of which are natural and others have been built by humans in the past.

Walking along the 20-kilometre valley provides the opportunity for every visitor to see the effects of soil erosion.

There are currently three geo-parks in Iran, which include Qeshm Global Geopark, Aras Geopark and Rageh Geopark.

Iran Giving Diplomacy Second Chance: FM Zarif

The Iranian top diplomat made the comments in a Monday meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Moscow.

During the talks, they exchanged views on the future of the Iran nuclear deal following the withdrawal of the US from the 2015 agreement. Zarif and Lavrov also conferred on ways to deal with the legal, economic and political aspects of the US pull-out of the JCPOA.

Zarif underlined the necessity for an all-out exploration of the issue and added, “We have decided to give another chance to diplomacy to safeguard the interests of all parties involved.”

The Iranian foreign minister went on to say that the interests of all sides hinge on economic relations among them free from Washington’s undue interferences.

For his part, the Russian top diplomat underlined the need for fulfilling obligations under the JCPOA by all involved sides and providing appropriate mechanisms for saving the nuclear deal and safeguarding the interests of Iran and other parties to the accord.

During the talks, the two sides also discussed the latest regional developments including Syria crisis, the legal regime of Caspian Sea, the issue of Palestine and the irresponsible move by the US to relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem al-Quds.

Zarif arrived in Moscow earlier Monday at the top of a high-ranking political and economic delegation. It is the second leg of his tour during which he is to sit down with officials from 5 states in the JCPOA to discuss how Iran’s interests under the deal can be guaranteed.

Back on Sunday he sat for talks with his Chinese counterpart in Beijing. He is expected to visit Brussels as well to hold talks with his counterparts from Germany, Britain, and France as well as the EU foreign policy chief.

Turkey’s Orhan Pamuk Talks of His Deep Interest in Persian Fables

During his recent visit to Tehran, Pamuk elaborated on his love for the Persian history and literature, and how his works had been inspired by Iran.

He says he was told by many of his readers that his novel “My Name is Red” is a Persian novel in terms of style and atmosphere.

“Though the novel revolves around characters and events in the Ottoman era in Istanbul, it is the Persian fables and arts which have the final say there. I’m interested in the Iranian history under Safavid dynasty and my works are built on this era’s arts,” he said in a recent interview with Etemad daily newspaper.

Elaborating on his career as a professional writer, Pamuk said his love to write has turned him into a writer. “Whatever feeling I may have, the love to write remains unchanged in me. I like to depict whatever I see either through writing or painting,”

Pamuk went on to say that he can spend a long time alone in a room by writing and painting and added, “But my imagination does not remain in the room and wonders around the world.”

Criticism of Turkish Gov’t for Restricting Freedom of Opinion

Elsewhere in the interview, Pamuk referred to the prices he has already paid for his protests against certain policies of Turkey’s ruling party and added, “Once I put my weight behind the Armenians and in response the government decided to ban my book in some cities.”

He also added that the point of his criticism is directed at the Turkish government rather than nation for restricting the freedom of expression.

“I maintain that Turkey should join the EU because the membership will promote our culture, economy and politics. I believe in Liberal Democracy principles and criticise any move distracting us from the principles.”

The Noble laureate underlined that winning the Noble prize has turned him into Turkey’s ambassador at the international level, and he is not happy about it.

Iran, Russia Discuss Syria Peace in Astana

Hossein Jaberi Ansari, a senior assistant to the Iranian foreign minister and the country’s senior negotiator at the Syria peace talks, held talks with the Russian delegation headed by President Vladimir Putin’s special envoy for Syria, Alexander Lavrentiev.

During the Monday talks, the two sides discussed the latest political and field developments in Syria and exchanged views on the Syrian-Syrian dialogue to resolve the Arab country’s crisis through peaceful ways.

Jaberi Ansari also met with members of the Syrian delegation led by Bashar Jaafari, the Syrian ambassador to the UN.

In the meeting, the heads of the Iranian and Syrian delegations taking part in the 9th International Syria Peace Conference (Astana Process) discussed the latest developments in Syria both in the political arena and on the ground.

They also exchanged views on the agenda of this round of Astana talks.

Downtism Café; Cosy Hangout Run by Autistic, Down Syndrome Staff

Downtism Café has been launched with the efforts of Ailin Gerami, a music teacher who has been teaching music to these mentally disordered guys for more than 17 years.

Currently, the café just serves coffee and tea and juices to customers, a recent report by Shargh Newspaper said.

The café is run by 35 crew members, all of whom have mental disorders but are able to work in several shifts. This is how they can earn an income and be accepted by the society.

The place is not as big as one may think. It has six or seven tables. A little piano is located at the corner of the café, and one of the staff plays it and sings songs.

Mohammad-Javad, 26, suffers from autism. He welcomes us and suggests that we try the natural juices of the café. He takes the order and then Ailin enters. She had been thinking of running such a place for more than five years, but she has just managed to implement it. With the help of the Welfare Organization, she rented a place to start the job.

“I majored in music, and I am the director of the Department of Music at university. The fact is that I’ve given many concerts with these guys for 17 years. We’ve travelled to different cities, but I felt that’s not enough. Although a lot of people were attending the concerts, I felt something is missing. How long can they perform concerts? People just came to see them and then left after a few minutes.  Nobody gave them a job and they were disappointed,” added Gerami.

Downtism Café; Cosy Hangout Run by Autistic, Down Syndrome Staff

“For the past three years, I have been thinking of running a workplace for them. I shared the idea with the Welfare Organization, and I referred to many officials. There were many problems. I told the organization last week that I really want to launch a workplace for these guys because they are grown-ups now and need to be part of the society. The Welfare Organization was very supportive and I managed to rent this place and employ 10 people.”

“However, yesterday something interesting happened. As the 10 people started their work, the family of 25 others came and asked for a job for their children in this café as well. We did not know at all what the output of this café would be. Despite all of this, 35 people are now set to work here. I saw how much they need to work, and now all of them will work here in different shifts and the income will be equally distributed among them,” underlined Gerami.

“Employees here are suffering from Down Syndrome, Autism, Learning Disorder, and some other disorders. We are currently accepting orders for juice and coffee, because we do not even have professional coffee machines. But in Ramadan, a barista is to going to train the staff for a month, and we will be completing our purchases for the cafe in the next week to have a great opening on Eid al-Fitr.”

Talking about the reaction of shopkeepers in the shopping centre, Gerami said, “I didn’t think the opening ceremony would be so crowded. For the same reason, I didn’t mention it when asking for their permission to hold the ceremony. However, encountered with such a massive crowd, they were somehow scared. After I explained why so many people have rushed to the place, they warmly welcomed the idea, and ordered coffee and sent us big flower bunches.”

Iran Limits Foreign Currency Allocated to Those Travelling Abroad

According to Iran’s Customs Office, from now on, the departing Iranian travellers are allowed to carry foreign currencies, bank documents and bonds worth up to €5,000 through aerial borders and €2,000 through other borders.

Ali Ma’qouli, the Director General of Import Department at Iran’s Customs Office, has introduced the new regulations for allocating foreign currencies to Iranian travellers, a report by Khabar Online said.

Referring to the letter by Deputy Governor of Iran’s Central Bank, the new regulation calls for making certain reforms to the directives for foreign currencies allocated to Iranian travellers.

Meanwhile, based on the new instructions, the regulation is binding in all entrances and exits across the country.

The new regulations have been coordinated with Iran’s Bank Melli and the Economy Ministry’s Anti- Money Laundering Centre.
