The top story in many newspapers today was the remarks made by EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini about the fate of the Iran nuclear deal. Mogherini has stressed that the EU cannot give Iran any guarantee, but it will do its best to protect the European investments in Iran.

Several papers also covered North Korea’s threat to cancel a planned meeting between Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump.

A deal between Iran and the British consortium Pergas also made the headlines today, as the UK became the first Western state to enter business with Iran following the US withdrawal from the JCPOA and the upcoming return of sanctions on the Islamic Republic.

Chinese Firm May Replace Total If It Exits Iran

“Total has said that if it doesn’t get an exemption from the United States to continue its work, it will begin to pull out of the deal. If that happens, the Chinese firm CNPC will replace Total.” Zanganeh was quoted as saying by oil ministry’s Shana news service.

In a press release on Wednesday, Total said it may pull out of SP11 project in light of the US recent withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal.

“On 8 May 2018, President Donald Trump announced the United States’ decision to withdraw from the JCPOA (nuclear agreement) and to reinstate US sanctions that were in force before the JCPOA’s implementation, subject to certain wind down periods,” Total said in the press release.

It went on to say that it has to unwind all related projects by 4 November 2018 unless it is granted a specific waive by the US.

Total added it is engaging with French and US authorities to examine the possibility of a project waiver.

It underlined that the waiver should include protection of the company from any secondary sanction as per US legislation.

The French company, together with the other partner Petrochina, began to launch SP11 project on 4 July 2017 in compliance with UN resolutions and US, EU and French legislation applicable at the time.

Total’s expenditure for the SP11 contract has been less than Eur40mn ($47 million) so far and the company says withdrawal would not impact its production growth target of 5% CAGR between 2016 and 2022.

SP11 is a gas development project aimed at supplying domestic gas to the domestic Iranian market.

Casualties Reported in Southern Iran after Protests Turn Violent

The protesters were reportedly calling for the release of people detained in small demonstrations in the city on Wednesday.

Fars News Agency reported that the Wednesday protests took a violent turn after people masking their face tried to enter the police station.

Some protestors set fire to parts of the station and police vehicles, according to Asr-e Iran news website.

Located over 1,000 kilometers south of Tehran, Kazeroon has recently been the scene of protests against a parliamentary motion to change the city’s boundaries.

The Wednesday protests were against a motion recently raised in the parliament that separate the cities of the Kazeroon County to form another county.

According to the plan, the cities of Chenarshahijan, Koohmareh Nodan, Bishapur, Imamzadeh Seyyed Hossein and Dashte Barm were to form Kooh-Chenar country.

But people of Kazeroon say cities of Bishapur, Imamzadeh Seyyed Hossein and Dashte Barm are inseparable parts of Kazeroon County.

They have staged protests to block the move, which would slash a range of benefits and jobs the city has received for many years.

Fars News Agency said the Wednesday night clashes seemed suspicious, as the city had seen no major protests since announcements by First Vice President Es’haq Jahangiri and provincial officials two weeks ago that the separation plan was cancelled.

The report also said the protests were started after unknown people used Telegram messaging app to invite people to join the demonstration.

This is while the city had seen no major protests since Kazeroon Friday Prayer Leader Mohammad Khorsand, who himself opposes the division plan, paid a visit to Tehran three weeks ago to discuss the issue with government officials.

Countdown Begun for Collapse of Zionist Regime: Iran’s Armed Forces

In a Wednesday statement, Iran’s Armed Forces underlined that based on the divine promise, the days of the occupying regime will come to an end forever.

“The Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic vehemently condemns the US provocative and satanic move to relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem al-Quds,” the statement said according to report by Fars News Agency.

It went on to say that the US’ ‘seditious’ decision to relocate its embassy and recognize Jerusalem al-Quds as the capital of Israel once again unveiled the real face of the criminal government of the US to create tensions and insecurity in the region.

The Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic also said the US President Donald Trump’s rude move to relocate the US embassy to Jerusalem al-Quds on the 70th anniversary of Nakba (Catastrophe) Day, unlike its perpetrators’ imagination, has not strengthened the shaky and rootless bases of the Zionist regime.

“On the contrary, the blood of the Palestinian martyrs and fighters as well as women, children and the elderly heralds upcoming growth and development of Intifada (uprising) of Palestinian nation against the crimes of the Zionists.”

The statement then denounced the international bodies as well as some Islamic states for their deadly silence over the massacre of the oppressed and defenceless nation of Palestine and said, “The countdown has begun for the overthrow of the hollow regime of Israel and doubtlessly, the criminal move will lead to further unity among Muslim nations and seekers of righteousness. In the near future, based on the divine promise, the doom of the occupying regime will be sealed forever.”

Israeli forces killed at least 62 Palestinians during protests near the Gaza fence on the eve of the 70th anniversary of the Nakba Day, which coincided this year with Washington’s embassy relocation. More than 2,700 Palestinians were also wounded as the Israeli forces used snipers, airstrikes, tank fire and tear gas to target the demonstrators.

Iran Calls on Muslim World to Stand United against Israeli Crimes

In a Wednesday phone conversation with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Rouhani described the latest massacre of Palestinians by the Zionist forces in Gaza on the 70th anniversary of Nakba (Catastrophe) Day as tragic and moving and called on the international bodies to stand by Palestinians.

“The UN and the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC) should fulfil their duty to put their weight behind the oppressed nation of Palestine at this critical time,” he said, according to a report by the Iranian President’s website.

He condemned the US move to relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem al-Quds saying the illegal move provoked outrage among the Palestinians and upset the Islamic states.

President Rouhani said the US administration and the Zionist regime should be held accountable for the massacre of people in the region and said “unfortunately, the US president has made grave miscalculation about regional issues thinking that it can put down Palestinian uprising by supporting the Zionist regime.”

He then referred to the upcoming emergency meeting of the OIC in Istanbul and said “we should have our unified voice against the US and Israel heard across the world.”

For his part, the Turkish president called the latest massacre of Palestinians in Gaza by Israeli forces deplorable and added the US policies should be blamed for triggering the heinous crimes.

He officially invited his Iranian counterpart to attend the OIC summit in Istanbul and said the Muslim world should unanimously follow up the plight of the Palestinians in the international arenas.

Erdogan underlined that any peace initiative which ignores the concerns and demands of the Palestinians is doomed to failure and will lead to further tensions and chaos.

Back on Monday, Israeli forces killed at least 62 Palestinians during protests near the Gaza fence on the eve of the 70th anniversary of the Nakba Day, which coincided this year with Washington’s embassy relocation.

More than 2,700 Palestinians were also wounded as the Israeli forces used snipers, airstrikes, tank fire and tear gas to target the demonstrators.

Statement Calling for Rouhani’s Apology over JCPOA Draws Criticism

The statement, published Sunday by the website of the Assembly of Experts as the body’s official position, said the Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei had approved the deal at the administration’s insistence.

Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati, the chief of the Assembly of Experts which is responsible for selecting and monitoring the performance of the Leader, said Rouhani should offer apologies for failing to observe the “redlines” set by the Leader.

Jannati’s statement also expressed pessimism that Europeans could help keep the deal in place as they are apparently in cahoots with the US.

The statement was first published by the secretariat of the assembly of experts titled as the reaction of the assembly to the US pullout. But the website later changed its title to the reaction of the body’s chairman, after some members of the assembly, notably Ayatollah Hashem Hashemzadeh Harisi, said many members were unaware of the statement, and that was just Ayatollah Jannati’s personal stance.

Government Defends

The government was quick to reject Jannati’s call for apology in a statement on Monday.

According to Tasnim News Agency, the statement said the whole process of nuclear negotiations was in compliance with the Constitution, the authority vested in the president, and Supreme National Security Council measures, which must be approved by the Leader.

The government statement said the critics demanding an apology from the administration were once concerned about the US presence in the JCPOA, but are now complaining about the US exit.

“Those who should apologize for wrong positions in the past are now arrogantly attacking national achievements,” it said, without addressing Jannati by name.

The statement said the government has devised plans to ensure Iran’s interests are protected after the US exit from the nuclear deal.

The government also called on all Iranian people and organizations to follow the guidelines of the Leader and boost national solidarity in standing against those who reneged on their commitments.

In a separate reaction on Tuesday, the government’s spokesman Mohammad Baqer Nobakht reiterated that the Leader’s concerns were taken into account by the government.

“It is no time to distract attention of diplomats busy with negotiations [with world powers],” he said.

“We have managed to prove Iran’s goodwill to the world. The world understood that we were not lying,” he said.

“Without a doubt, history will praise Rouhani and Ayatollah Khamenei will be known as a wise leader,” he said.

Unwitting Insult

Among the well-known figures who censured Jannati’s statement was Ali Motahari, the deputy speaker of the parliament, who accused Jannati of making “paradoxical” statements.

“In this letter, on the one hand you have admitted that JCPOA was signed by the Leader’s approval and on the other hand you have asked the president to apologize to the people for the deal’s damages. Aren’t these statement paradoxical and probably an unwitting insult to the Leader?” Motahari asked, according to Khabar Online.

He also censured another part of Jannati’s letter that says it would be a religious and legal duty for the Foreign Ministry to get out of the accord if Europe does not provide binding guarantees.

“Are YOU in charge of determining religious duties or the Leader? Are YOU tasked with imposing legal duties of the diplomatic apparatus or Parliament?” he asked.

Motahari discouraged Jannati from “interfering in the affairs of other institutions”, saying the chairman would do well to adequately fulfil his duty of monitoring the performance of the Leader and bodies under his supervision.

“Addressing issues such as JCPOA and ordering the president and Parliament is not among responsibilities of the assembly,” he said.

Danger to Islam

Ayatollah Ali Akbar Massoudi Khomeini, a co-founder of the Society of Seminary Teachers of Qom, also rejected the statement as “unfounded”.

In an interview with ILNA on Tuesday, Khomeini urged Jannati to refrain from delivering remarks that “could be misused by enemies of Islam and the revolution”.

“You should watch your words and think [deeply] before making statement. Otherwise your words will be misused,” he said.

The cleric also warned opponents of the government not to use the US pullout as a pretext to vilify Rouhani’s administration.

“… This would be extremely detrimental to Islam, Quran, Iran and the Islamic Revolution,” he said.

Attempt to Revenge

The editor-in-chief of the moderate newspaper Jomhouri Eslami, Masih Mohajeri, said asking the president to apologize for a deal approved by the whole political system is more like an attempt to take “revenge” for previous political defeats.

In an editorial published on Tuesday, Mohajeri said such remarks does the country no good and weaken the hand of a government who is in the middle of a political battle with adversaries.

Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami, another member of the Assembly of Experts who is known to be an ally of Jannati, also declared that the statement was just the personal opinion of the chief of Assembly of Experts.

“Ayatollah Jannati has just expressed his views as a religious authority,” he added.

India to Study Construction of Ferroalloy Plant in Iran

That was announced during a visit to Iran’s Port of Chabahar by Sandeep Jajodia, the president of the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India.

During his visit, the Indian official met with investment and economic officials of the Chabahar Free Zone as well as Hamidreza Toosi, the representative of the Iranian Foreign Ministry.

One of the objectives of Jajodia’s trip is to review the possibility of constructing a ferroalloy plant as well as a steel mill, a report by Mizan News Agency said.

Jajodia said among the incentives which have prompted New Delhi to follow up on the construction of the factory is the existence of cheap energy and easy access to target markets through the Chabahar Free Zone as well the potential for investment in the area.

The Iranian side, in turn, touched upon the advantages of making investment in Chabahar, saying that recently discounts have applied to investment activities there, which could draw more investors.

India has, so far, managed its cooperation with Iran in the port of Chabahar through boosting reciprocal ties. Meanwhile, the two countries have been trying to reach common understanding on an alternative route to Central Asia via Chabahar.

Iranian President Claims Victory Over US in Nuclear Deal Battle

“Even if a poll is conducted inside the US, public opinion would be in our favour. This means the US government is really sidelined and we are already the victor,” Rouhani said in a cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

The controversial US President Donald Trump pulled the country out of the deal last Tuesday, when he announced the US will snap back its anti-Iran sanctions suspended under the pact and will impose “the highest level” of economic bans on the Islamic Republic.

Iran has announced the deal could remain in place only if European parties to the pact give Tehran firm assurances that its interests will be served if they remain in the deal.

Rouhani said Iran made the right decision by giving parties to the deal another chance before withdrawing from the accord, as it could be blamed by the people and even other parties of the deal for the collapse of the deal if it had rushed into action.

Rouhani said the US government believed Iran will not drag its feet in walking out of the pact, preparing the ground for a return of international sanctions on Iran.

“According to reports by their intelligence apparatus, Iran should have walked out of the pact within hours after the US pullout. Their plans are now derailed,” he said.

The president said unlike the years before the nuclear deal, when Iran was under pressure over US accusations it was covertly developing nukes, now it is the US who is under pressure and should answer to the world.

“Through [spreading] Iranophobia and false propaganda, they had convinced the world that Iran is a threat. But now it is replaced with Trumpophobia and Iran is respected by all,” he said, adding that the world sees Iran as a peace-loving nation who respects rules.

The president said Iran would be pleased to get rid of a “disruptive and annoying” party to the deal, if its interests are protected by other parties.

On Tuesday, the EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini reiterated the EU’s determination to keep the nuclear deal in place, and expressed the bloc’s regret over the US’ move.

“I cannot talk about legal or economic guarantees but I can talk about serious, determined, immediate work from the European side,” she said, speaking after a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his French, British and German counterparts in Brussels.

The Iranian foreign minister was in Brussels on the final leg of a whirlwind diplomatic tour, which had earlier taken him to Beijing and Moscow.

“Some 4,000 Students Learning Persian Language Worldwide”

A verse by Ferdowsi, the great poet known as the Savior of the Persian Language. He is called so because without his 30 years of hard work on 'Book of Kings', Iranians perhaps would be speaking Arabic today.

Gholam-Ali Haddad Adel, the President of Academy of Persian Language and Literature, says there are currently 340 seats of the Persian Language in universities, academies, and learning centres across the world.

Haddad Adel, who is also the head of the Saadi Foundation tasked with promoting Persian language teaching in the world, made the comments at a ceremony marking the 6th anniversary of the establishment of the foundation, coinciding with National Persian Language Day when a software application on learning Persian was also unveiled.

“The Saadi Foundation is an institute established with the approval of the Supreme Cultural Revolution Council in a bid to promote the Persian Language,” he said, as quoted by Tasnim News Agency.

“The sphere of the foundation’s activity mostly covers training for the Iranian children born abroad and interested to keep in touch with their mother tongue,” he noted.

He said scholarships will also be granted those interested in learning and teaching the Persian Language.

Haddad Adel underlined the foundation also compiles books for Persian Language learners.

Persian, also known by its endonym Farsi, is one of the Western Iranian languages within the Indo-Iranian branch of the Indo-European language family.

It is primarily spoken in Iran, Afghanistan (officially known as Dari since 1958), Tajikistan (officially known as Tajiki since the Soviet era), and some other regions which historically were Persianate societies and considered part of Greater Iran. It is written in the Persian alphabet, a modified variant of the Arabic script, which itself evolved from the Aramaic alphabet.

There are approximately 110 million Persian speakers worldwide, with the language holding official status in Iran, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan. For centuries, Persian has also been a prestigious cultural language in other regions of Western Asia, Central Asia, and South Asia by the various empires based in the regions.

Mysterious Disappearance of Crown Prince: Where Is Bin Salman?

In a report published on Wednesday, Fars News Agency claimed Mohammed bin Salman hadn’t been seen on a public appearance since April 21, when videos were posted online in social media purporting to show areas around royal palaces ringing with heavy gunfire.

Saudi authorities firmly denied any major security breach, saying Saudi forces had “dealt with” an unauthorised toy drone near the royal palace in the capital.

But footage circulating on social media showed loud shooting that lasted for at least 30 seconds, giving rise to speculations about a possible coup attempt or a retaliation by the House of Saud’s adversaries.

One video showed at least two police cars parked in the middle of the street.

Saudi Arabia, the world’s top oil exporter, has witnessed a series of radical political changes over the past year as Mohammed bin Salman ousted his cousin as crown prince and jailed well-known princes in an anti-corruption purge.

Moreover, bin Salman oversees social and economic reforms that have been censured by several powerful Wahhabi clerics.

Saudi Arabia is also embroiled in a long running conflict in its southern neighbor Yemen, dubbed by the United Nations as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.

Fars News Agency said regardless of the cause of April shooting, the weeks-long disappearance of Mohammed bin Salman is quite mysterious, in view of the fact that he is known to be highly active on the political scene.

Notably, bin Salman made no media appearance during the April 28 visit of the newly-appointed US State Secretary Mike Pompeo to Riyadh, his first foreign trip as the top US diplomat.

During his stay in Riyadh, Saudi media outlets published images of Pompeo’s meetings with King Salman and Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir.

This is while the state-run outlets used to publish images of meetings in Riyadh between bin Salman and former US secretary of state Rex Tillerson.

A few days after the April 21 incident, Saudi media published footage and images of bin Salman meeting several Saudi and foreign officials. But the date of the meetings could not be verified, so the release of the videos could be aimed at dispelling rumours about bin Salman’s conditions.

It is not clear if bin Salman’s disappearance is due to reasons such as him feeling threatened or being injured in the incident.

It seems only a live television appearance could dispel rumors about bin Salman’s whereabouts.
