Terrorist Cell Smashed in Southeastern Iran

The police chief of Sistan-and-Baluchestan province, Brigadier General Mohammad Qanbari, said Wednesday the terrorist cell was disbanded in Saravan region.

He said that the clash between security forces and terrorists took place near the border region of Saravan.

“During this operation, significant amounts of light and heavy weapons, several booby traps and suicide vests, and significant amounts of ammunition were confiscated from terrorists,” he added.

He said that the bomber of the terrorist group was killed in the conflict, but police forces suffered no casualty.

Qanbari said that the police force would firmly confront any terrorist group seeking to endanger the security and peace of the country, and would not allow them to go ahead with their plans.

Over the past years, Iranian security forces and border guards have engaged in clashes with terror groups, many of whom cross border from Pakistan into the country to carry out attacks.

Last month, Iranian security forces discovered and captured a large cache of explosives in Sistan-and-Baluchestan province.

The Iranian Intelligence Ministry said in a statement on April 16 that security forces confiscated the consignment due to be smuggled into the country.

The forces thwarted terrorist groups’ plots to transfer 80 kilograms of composite explosives, 17 booby traps, 28 pistols with 2,100 bullets, 35 hand grenades, tens of electronic detonators and other explosive equipment through technical and intelligence operations, the statement added.

It noted that 580 kilograms of narcotics were also seized from the terrorists.

Iran FM Writes Letter on JCPOA to Foreign Counterparts

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said on Wednesday, “Dr. Zarif, the foreign minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran, has, in an elaborate letter to his counterparts from other countries, expounded on the latest situation of the JCPOA following the United States’ unilateral withdrawal from the agreement and the continuation of the provocative and illegal approach adopted by the government of this country to scupper this international deal.”

“This important letter will be handed over to the foreign ministers of other countries by ambassadors and special envoys of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the spokesman added.

On March 8, Trump pulled the US out of what he called an “embarrassment” and threatened Washington will impose “the highest level” of economic bans on the Islamic Republic.

Palestinian Resistance Groups Respond to Israeli Attacks on Gaza

Over the past few days, Israeli warplanes have been targeting the Gaza Strip continuously and in the last of these attacks, three members of the Islamic Jihad Movement were killed in Gaza.

In reaction to the continued bombardment of Gaza strip by the Israeli regime, the resistance forces responded to these aggressions and bombed the Israeli positions around the Gaza Strip.

In a joint statement on Wednesday, Izz ad-Din al-Qassam and Al-Quds Brigades claimed responsibility for the attacks, and said, “We warn Israel against continuing to attack our people. All options are open to the resistance, Bombings will be answered with bombings and blood with blood and we will not allow the enemy to impose new equations, no matter the cost.”

The statement said, “This was a response to the Zionist aggression and the crimes against our people and members of the resistance, the last of which was attacking the two military wings’ outposts which led to the deaths of several of the combatants therein.”

“Our retaliation today was a statement that these crimes will not remain unanswered. The resistance is waging a campaign against Israel in a manner serving the interests of the Palestinian people and will not allow (Israel) to force new equations of bloodshed.”

“Europe Resisting US Pressure to Protect Own Interests, Not Iran’s”

Twenty days on since US President Donald Trump announced Washington’s withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal, reactions to, and analyses on the unexpected move continue to pour in. Some say companies will not invest in Iran fearing penalties by the United States, and some hold a different opinion.

Political commentator Hossein Valeh has, in an interview with Khabar Online news website, weighed in on the consequences of the United States’ pullout from the Iran nuclear deal as well as the prospects of Tehran-Washington relations.

He says Washington’s new sanctions run counter to the UN Security Council resolution. The analyst believes countries will sue the US for the repercussions of the sanctions on their companies or banks, and may even take part of Washington’s assets in Europe to indemnify their citizens, companies and governments.

The first part of the interview follows.

Some analysts and politicians say Europe may give Iran some promises in word, but it would be impossible to fulfill the pledges, and even small companies cannot forgo the profits they make via the US and cannot ignore Trump’s threats. That being said, is holding talks with Europe futile?

There are two viewpoints about the US and Europe’s positions on issues related to Iran, including the JCPOA. Based on one view, the US and Europe are both tarred with the same brush and both play the good-cop bad-cop game. The same opinion applies to the US government: All American parties and political groups are, in fact, one single current with a certain number of objectives.

Naturally, the advocates of this view are concerned that the West has planned to eliminate Iran in four phases: First, imposing deadly sanctions to bring Iran to the negotiating table; second, giving hollow promises about the JCPOA to remove fears and persuade Iran not to go on the defensive; third, violating the JCPOA in order to ratchet up the pressure on Iran and make it give more concessions in the future talks, and fourth, dealing the final blow under the table and triggering a direct or indirect military confrontation after undermining Iran’s power in a bid to topple the government or disintegrate the country. Now, it begs the question whether Europe will live up to its commitment or will breach it as the US did? If there are no assurances in that regard, is there any use holding negotiations with Europe?

The second group believes the world is really marked by plurality. Europe and the United States have quite different interests, issues and approaches. They have some cooperation while having conflict of interests. The US, itself, is not homogeneous, either. There are both hawks and doves in the US with disparate ideologies, policies, histories and power bases. Today, the geographical borders of the Westphalian nation-state system have been superseded by the supranational interests system and transnational alliances. In the new system, the conflict of interests between major powers creates rifts between them which gives semi-major powers some breathing room.

In the second viewpoint, Europe’s resistance against Washington’s pressure is aimed at safeguarding its own interests, not Iran’s. Europe has put up such resistance before. We can mention the Cuba case as an example. We should be able to take advantage of rifts among major powers. It would be wrong to think we can pit big powers against one another for the sake of our interests. As a result, we should have realistic expectations. Iran once reached agreement with the European Troika, but Bush junior prevented the deal from going into effect. The current agreement (the JCPOA) is different from the previous deal in that the JCPOA is an international agreement and approved by the UN Security Council, which shows all signatories have common interests under the deal. However, the previous agreement was not like that. Therefore, the idea that Europe is making promises just in order to please us would be an illusion resulting from a lack of understanding the nature of relations between international powers. The point is that part of the ruling elite in the US that, from the outset, was against engaging with Iran, including working with Tehran under the JCPOA, has now come to power and tries to impose its will on others. The other part of the US government is resisting this imposition of ideas. The degree of their resistance and success depends on numerous factors, but this is the right way.

If negotiations with the West break down, should we look to the East, again? Putin said in his recent remarks that the annulment of the JCPOA would have adverse repercussions. What does he mean? What options does Moscow have on the table if the JCPOA is scrapped?

The geopolitical landscape has become very complicated. Under such circumstances, the Russians, Europeans and Americans really need Iran, and it is due the geopolitical status. Washington is pressuring Iran to make the country succumb to its demands. The US pressure is partly driven by the favourable situation in the region which emanates from the animosity between countries in the south and north of the Persian Gulf as well as Israel’s acts of sedition. The Europeans need Iran for energy and security. They also need Iran to maintain the balance of power among traditional heavyweights. An Iran which is totally dependent on the US or Russia would limit Europe’s manoeuvering power in the face of Washington. For Russians, Iran is a gemstone which has finally got out of their rival’s shop window, and it would be very good if this gem can be Moscow’s. Iran is a major tool in the hands of Russia to rein in the Americans in Afghanistan and Iraq. Moreover, Europe is dependent on the United States when it comes to strategic balance with the Russians. If it weren’t for the commitment of NATO and the US, Russia’s military might at the conventional level would be more than that of whole Europe combined. The ceiling of Russia’s ambitions is set by NATO, an alliance in which the US has a determining role.

I believe we need to steer clear of two dangers: First, the emergence of a situation where war between Iran and Arab countries will serve the interests of Russia and the US, and the Europeans will not be able to stop it. Second, the withdrawal of Iran from a position of creating negative balance in the global powers’ club. Iran’s becoming completely dependent on Russia or the US in such a way that others will not benefit from cooperation with Iran, will pose long-term threats to the Islamic Republic’s national security. If we manage to ward off these two dangers, we will be able to pass through the “Trump wave.” The world is too big for a country to be able to impose its will on everybody. This applies to us, as well.

Bin Salman’s Month-Long Disappearance Intentional: Saudi Whistleblower

In a tweet on Tuesday, Mujtahidd said bin Salman has been worried his cousins could be plotting to overthrow him, hence he has retreated from the public eye to see if his adversaries mount a coup.

The anonymous Twitter user who is known for leaking information about the Saudi royal family said the crown prince has in recent weeks been enjoying his time in his ships and palaces in the Red Sea, according to a report by Fars News Agency.

The media-savvy leader of the oil kingdom has been unnaturally quiet since the April 21 incident, when prolonged heavy gunfire was heard at the royal palace in Riyadh.

The official Saudi narrative was that the shooting was caused by a toy drone flying too close to royal palaces, but speculations were rift that it could be a possible coup attempt by bin Salman’s many adversaries inside the oil kingdom.

He has been absent from a number of state meetings and ceremonies held in recent weeks.

Bin Salman’s disappearance has fuelled speculations about his whereabouts, which went as far as claiming that bin Salman had been shot twice in the April 21 incident and could be dead.

Iranian conservative daily Kayhan recently quoted Palestine’s Al-Manar news as saying that Bin Salman’s leg had been seriously wounded in the shooting incident. It also claimed that a team of Israeli doctors has been dispatched to Riyadh to oversee the treatment of Bin Salman’s leg.

Saudi outlets and officials have so far published photos of bin Salman standing next to some Arab leaders or taking part in a meeting of the Saudi council of ministers, apparently in a bid to quash speculations about the conditions of the prince. But the date of the photos could not be verified.

In the latest attempt to dispel rumours, state-run Saudi outlets reported on Saturday bin Salman has met President of the International Football Association (FIFA) Gianni Infantino on Friday. However, the photo of the meeting released by Saudi media was in fact an old one published last January.

Iran Has No Special Plan to Control Ronaldo, Iniesta: Queiroz

Team Melli is to face Spain in Kazan on 20 June before meeting Portugal in Saransk five days later. Queiroz has been in charge of Team Melli since April 2011. He led the team in World Cup 2014, during which Team Melli showed a brilliant performance in the match against Argentina.

In an interview with the Spanish-language daily Marca, former coach of Read Madrid has elaborated on his views about the upcoming World Cup. Here is what he told the daily, according to a report by Tasnim News.

What do you remember of the elimination of Portugal during World Cup 2010?

It was a highly difficult game for us during which the best team finally won. But if there was a more attentive referee or if there was a Video Assistant Referee (VAR), the story could have been changed. That is the past.

You are usually not lucky when it comes to referees; for example, the penalty against Argentina in the World Cup 2014.

The referee’s decision inflicted a heavy blow on us. We played very well against Argentina, but Messi came up with a magical pass. Two people turned the table on us during the game: Messi, with his fantastic pass, and the referee who didn’t see a penalty for Ashkan Dejagah. If we were awarded the penalty kick, that could have been 1-0 for us. Meanwhile, Zabaleta should have received a red card. But we always have to move on.

You have said once in an interview with the FIFA website that Messi should be banned.

(Laughing) He should have been banned from playing in the World Cup 2014. He does things that shouldn’t be allowed in football. To me, Ronaldo is the best player in the world, but Messi does things that are far beyond human capabilities.

What do you think about your draw, which grouped you with Spain, Portugal and Morocco?

It’s a very difficult and the most complicated group. But we have a clear mission: facing things, moving forward and seeking to advance. This is our goal. Our unity was very good, with a consistent sense of belonging. But we aren’t as unified as in the past. Our goal is to appear in the World Cup with a better and more competitive spirit to honour the national team’s jersey.

Your first match in the World Cup is against Morocco. How do you see it?

Iran and Morocco are two teams which seek to advance the stage group. This is better for everyone. It goes without saying that Spain and Portugal don’t play just to pass this stage. They have come to become world’s champion. But Morocco and Iran seek to be in the last 16.

How do you see today’s Spain?

Firstly, Spain has returned to its glorious days. They play beautifully, controlling the space and the ball.  They are in full control of the game. Under Lopetegui, they have made progress. They have the same creativity as they had under Vicente Del Bosque. But today they have progressed and are creative in every 10 minute. This makes them a fierce rival. They not only control space and rhythm of the game but also play with high intensity.

What are the weak points of Spain in your view?

I don’t see any weak point. During the World Cup, we are going to face Spain’s football rather that its basketball. We are not going to play against an NBA team. Football is a matter of moments, decisions and inspirations. It is a game during which everything seems possible. It is a unique sport making it the most attractive one in the world. There is no winner beforehand in football. Iran will play every game, every minute and has plan for every ball. So, let’s allow the football god do its justice and make the best team win.

Do you have special plans against Ronaldo or Iniesta?

No, not at all. We are seeking to be a competitive team trying just to have a plan for 90 minutes. We know that there should be a big change before Spain. During our qualifying matches, we controlled the ball for 60 or 70% of the time but we have to push the team toward this sense that this is going to be the other way around during World Cup. We need to change our mindset. Inspiration is our greatest rival. We don’t need to make a special plan against Iniesta because Spain’s head coach may decide to put Silva, Isco, Asensio or Pique in his list for the game. We should not think of individuals. We need to be well prepared and then work on each game. We should find the origin of the possible problems.

You are going to face Ronaldo again.

It is a special occasion for me because we lived with each other for a long time. He is the best player in the world, but when there is a match, your team matters more than anything else.

How do you see Iranian football players?

They are strong and determined. We have team with a high personality and high sense of belonging. The top players of Iran are included in the national team. We don’t have stars in prestigious teams like Real Madrid, Manchester United or Inter Milan. Our star is our team. We always work together with the same mentality. We try to perform well and achieve victory through unity. The players have adapted themselves to the principles set for them. Each player knows well what expectations the team has of him.

Is it easy to work with Iranian players playing in Portugal and Belgium leagues?

It is not easy at all. We have players playing outside Iran who have international experiences. On the other hand, we have players who are playing in Iran’s league. That’s why we have sought to hold some training courses to raise their capabilities for the World Cup 2018.

And finally, this World Cup will be Iniesta’s final World Cup.

It is bad for football world that such a great player like Iniesta is going to leave Barcelona. He was part of voting that never did him justice. The world of football owes a lot to him. It is hard to believe that he has never been chosen as the best player in the world. Such things happen in football sometimes.

Minister Vows to Prevent Plunge in Iran’s Oil Exports

“We have ideas and plans to sell oil and will work to use our experience to prevent a decrease in the oil export,” Bijan Namdar Zanganeh said on the sidelines of a cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

“We have [already] taken measures that cannot be announced, as the US could move to create obstacles,” he said as reported by IRNA.

The minister said Iran is negotiating with Europeans to finalise an arrangement for selling them oil and receiving insurance and shipping services.

“Although less than a third of Iran’s oil export is sent to Europe, reaching agreement with them is of importance as other costumers of Iranian oil will follow in their footsteps,” he said.

Iran, which has the world’s fourth-biggest oil reserves, produces some 3.8 million barrels of oil per day, 70 percent of which goes to China and other Asian countries, and 20 percent to Europe.

Zanganeh said Tehran has also talked with China and India about their purchase of oil from Iran, and “positive messages” have been relayed to and from them.

Total Withdrawal

On the possible exit of French oil company Total from Iran South Pars 11 gas field development, Zanganeh said the energy giant has 60 days to decide whether or not it wants to remain in Iran.

Total has announced it will unwind all related projects by November 2018 unless it is granted a specific waiver by the US.

If Total decides to exit Iran for the fear of US sanctions, China’s National Petroleum Company is ready to replace it, Zanganeh said.

US President Donald Trump pulled the country out of the Iran nuclear deal on March 8, when he announced he will impose “the highest level” of economic bans on the Islamic Republic.

Iran has announced the deal could remain in place only if European parties to the pact give Tehran firm assurances that its interests will be served if they remain in the deal.

Iran and the EU have been holding intense talks to finalize a mechanism to prevent anti-Iran US sanctions from hampering trade between Iran and the green continent.

During a visit by EU Commissioner for Energy and Climate Miguel Arias Canete to Iran earlier this month, the EU agreed to open up a banking channel to allow conduction of transactions with Iran.

Iran and the EU have also agreed to form a joint working group to address challenges confronting Iran’s oil trade.

The top story in several papers today was the sexual harassment of a group of boys in a high school in Western Tehran by a school official. Following the sensitive scandal, Iran’s Leader Ayatollah Khamenei urged the Judiciary to immediately punish the perpetrators.

Also a top story was the move by a large number of celebrities to decline an invitation to attend President Hassan Rouhani’s Iftar (fast-breaking) ceremony. They have cited people’s economic problems and Rouhani’s unfulfilled promises as the main reasons behind their decision; however, conservative papers and government officials have criticized the move, saying that the conditions have not changed since last year when the same celebrities expressed their support for Rouhani.

Ask Foreign Tourists about Security in Iran!

Jonathan Betkolia, the representative of the Assyrian community at the Iranian Parliament, has urged media to introduce Iran to foreign visitors very well, saying foreign tourists are the best promoters of tourism in Iran as they let their friends and compatriots know more about the country.

“Embassies and mass media should show the real picture of Iran to foreign visitors and, in addition to introducing tourist attractions, inform the whole world [through foreign tourists] about the country’s security and tranquility,” said the lawmaker, who is also a member of Parliament’s Cultural Heritage and Tourism Commission.

Speaking in an interview with IRNA, he also touched upon the diversity of ethnic groups and religions in Iran.

“Iran has diverse cultural and historical attractions for foreign tourists, and the existence of numerous historical and religious sites is one of the advantages of the country’s tourism sector,” the MP noted.

“As a religious site, the Vatican hosts 30 to 40 million visitors annually, and Iran, too, has thousands of invaluable historical and religious monuments which should be introduced to tourists on the international stage,” said the legislator.

He highlighted the need to use the power of the media to promote the country’s tourist attractions. He further highlighted that the productions of certain multilingual and visual media outlets play an effective role in that regard.

“Unlike the negative propaganda by foreign media outlets, the Islamic headscarf is no impediment to the attraction of foreign tourists; rather, the thing that has had a negative impact on the attraction of tourists is efforts to paint a negative picture of Iran and create the impression that there is no enough security in the country,” Betkolia said.

He said there are 1.5 billion Muslims in the world, the majority of whom wear the Islamic headscarf.

“How many of these Muslims have we been able to attract as tourists?” he asked.

So, he added, the claim that some foreign tourists are reluctant to visit Iran because they have to wear the headscarf is “just a pretext.”

He underscored that security is a prerequisite for absorbing tourists.

“A tourist who visits the country should enjoy full security and be confident that he/she will face no problems in his/her tourist destination,” he said.

Unfortunately, he said, tourists are sometimes robbed and disrespected in small towns.

“Such moves will produce an unpleasant reflection at the global level and in the tourism industry, and such move must be stopped,” the legislator said.

When tourists see good and appropriate behaviour at the entry points on the country’s borders, or when they are respected, they will turn into couriers who will promote the rich Iranian culture, and this very direct promotion [of the Iranian culture] will further boost the country’s tourism industry,” the MP noted.

“Many countries such as Turkey have tourism revenues higher than oil earnings, simply by creating more facilities for tourists of every ethnicity, race and religion,” he said.

Another reason behind the underdevelopment of Iran’s tourism industry is a lack of proper infrastructure, he noted.

“The necessary facilities and infrastructure have been provided in addition to some attractions to develop the tourism industry,” the lawmaker said.

He said the private sector plays an effective role in promoting tourism.

“The tourism industry, which enjoys a high turnover and creates many jobs, can be expanded through investment by the private sector,” he said.

“By having unique historical and religious attractions such as world-famous ancient churches, Iran enjoys excellent capacity to attract foreign tourists,” he said.

He then stressed the need to establish the Tourism Ministry.

“The outlines of establishing this ministry have been approved with the aim of attracting tourists,” the lawmaker said.

In today’s world, the development of the tourism industry is one of the key factors that governments should pay attention to, in order to secure economic progress. The tourism industry needs to be viewed from a new perspective, so that it could be overhauled to put the country on the path to progress and delineate a bright outlook for the tourism sector.
