Gilan: Awkonoos

One of the popular Yalda dishes in Iran’s northern province of Gilan is Awkonoos (water and common medlar), a traditional food with a unique recipe. In autumn, big vats are filled with the raw fruits of common medlar. The vat is then filled with water, a small amount of salt is added, and the containers are covered with lids before being stored in a corner away from high temperatures. The raw and hard common medlar ripens and becomes tasty and succulent after a while. Awkonoos is usually found until the next spring in nearly all houses of Gilan, so that the family members can enjoy the traditional food whenever they fancy a fresh, juicy, ripe common medlar fruit, eaten with salt and Persian hogweed.

Zanjan: Khagine Khorma

Khagine Khorma, whose main ingredient is date palm, is the traditional and popular Yalda dinner in the city of Zanjan.

Recipe for Khagine Khorma:

Mash 400 grams of date fruits after removing their stones, and mix the flesh with cardamom, cinnamon, crumbled walnut, and cooking oil. In a separate dish, mix four eggs with a spoonful of vanilla, add 50 grams of yoghurt and a pinch of baking powder, and blend the mixture well. Add sifted flour to the mixture, spread it in a nonstick frying pan (preferably 25×30 cm) that has been slightly oiled in advance, and cook it over a medium heat for 15 to 20 minutes.

When the base, or Khagine, is ready, allow it to cool a little before spreading the date palm mixture onto the base with a spoon or spatula. Then roll the Khagine gently from one side, pour syrup on the dessert, and put it in the refrigerator to let it become fair before being served.

To make the syrup, allow the mixture of water and sugar to boil over the heat to produce a solution. Add steeped saffron and rose water to the syrup, and let it cool down before pouring it on the rolls.

Iran Open to Any Plan for Rise in Oil Sales: President

In a Friday meeting with Prime Minister of Japan Abe Shinzo in Tokyo, President Rouhani highlighted Iran’s contribution to regional and international peace, saying Tehran has worked in cooperation with the neighboring and regional countries to that end.

Hailing Japan’s support for the Iranian-proposed Hormuz Peace Endeavour (HOPE), the president said, “Iran has always fulfilled its responsibility to ensure regional security, and we believe that the Persian Gulf security has been upset by the foreign countries.”

“In order for regional security to prevail, we must eradicate unilateralism, and make the ones pursuing plans other than cooperation on the basis of international regulations realize that they have to choose a different path,” President Rouhani added.

Lauding the close relations between Iran and Japan over the past 90 years, the president said the many meetings between the heads of the two countries during the past six years indicate the cordial and growing ties between Tehran and Tokyo.

President Rouhani also called for efforts to enhance the bilateral ties in various fields, noting, “The two countries can boost cooperation in diverse areas such as energy, science and new technologies, medicine, tourism, sports, customs affairs, as well as the industrial, economic and trade relations.”

He further denounced the US’ “cruel and illegal” sanctions after its withdrawal from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, saying, “The US’ unilateral withdrawal from the international agreements, like the JCPOA, threatens security and peace in the world.”

Stressing the need for all countries to respect the UN Security Council Resolution 2231, President Rouhani said, “The US sanctions amount to economic terrorism, and the countries fighting against terrorism must stand against this American move as well.”

“Iran has done and will do its utmost to save the JCPOA within the framework of its interests, and we call on the other JCPOA parties to honor their commitments,” he added.

He also noted that the JCPOA parties could force the US to correct its mistakes and follow the right and legal path by fulfilling their commitments to the nuclear deal.

The Iranian president further expressed Tehran’s readiness for any plan for increased economic interaction with the other countries, particularly those resulting in a rise in Iran’s oil sale and export.

Describing the JCPOA as a good model for peace and friendship among the nations, President Rouhani said a phased reduction in Iran’s commitments to the nuclear deal took place after the US withdrawal from the agreement and the Europeans’ failure to meet their commitments.

Washington’s exit from the JCPOA and the imposition of unprecedented sanction on the Iranian nation were not in the interests of anyone, the Iranian president deplored, adding, “The American violation dealt a blow not only to a major international agreement, but also harmed the peace and friendly political relations among the countries.”

Iran welcomes any effort from the other countries to salvage the JCPOA and ensure regional and international security, peace and stability, he underlined, adding, “Naturally, we would not decline any negotiation and agreement within the framework of our interests in this regard.”

“Throughout these years, Iran has proved that it fulfills its interests with logic and dialogue, and has always maintained that effective and lasting agreements would be possible with the logic of dialogue and the win-win concept.”

Slamming the US’ move to scrap the JCPOA as a damage to peace and security, President Rouhani said such American exit did not benefit any party and proved that the sanctions are doomed to be a lose-lose policy.

The Iranian president finally expressed hope that all countries, including Japan, would push for saving the JCPOA.

The Japanese prime minister, for his part, said the reciprocal visits by the Japanese and Iranian official in the recent years have enhanced the bilateral ties.

Abe also voiced Japan’s willingness to promote cooperation with Iran in various fields, particularly in the consular affairs, medical management, crisis management, and earthquake preparedness plans.

The Japanese leader also called for the immediate implementation of the agreements in the tourism industry to boost the relations between the two nations, and highlighted the significant role of the private sectors in the enhancement of economic ties between Iran and Japan.

Prime Minister Abe further reaffirmed Japan’s support for the Hormuz Peace Endeavor, and praised Iran for its “constructive role” in protecting regional security, peace and stability.

Japan has always supported the JCPOA and will continue efforts in that regard, the Japanese leader added, saying Tokyo has launched cooperation with the three European parties to the JCPOA.

President Rouhani has travelled to Japan after participation in the KL Summit 2019 in Malaysia.

Iranian, US Envoys Hold Rare Talks at UN Hall

A UN video shows the new US ambassador, Kelly Craft, approaches the Iranian delegation inside the Security Council hall on Thursday and holds talks with Iranian ambassador Majid Takht Ravanchi for a few minutes.

During the short conversation, held on the sidelines of a Security Council meeting, the American envoy has offered condolences over the death of a two-year-old child suffering from a rare disease called epidermolysis bullosa (EB), according to Iranian UN mission spokesman Alireza Miryousefi.

The meeting came shortly after a speech by Takht Ravanchi, in which he said Sweden, under the pressure of US sanctions, has stopped exporting special bandages for patients suffering from EB, a rare genetic condition resulting in easy blistering of the skin.

He said a 2-year-old girl from the city of Ahvaz, named Ava, has lost her life as result of this disease. Takht Ravanchi added that Ava was one of the “butterfly children” who are known so because their skin is as fragile as butterflies. Nowadays, the import of these special bandages for EB patients has become almost impossible, and that has endangered the lives of innocent children like Ava.

“Now butterfly children are feeling the pain of the US inhumane sanctions with their hearts and souls. In June this year, Ava was relieved of pain forever and passed away. Her story only reflects the tip of the iceberg, as children and adults with cancer and rare diseases are struggling with death in silence. Killing children and patients takes no courage,” underlined Takht Ravanchi in his statement.

Miryousefi further stressed that no other issues were raised in this brief conversation. He added that it is not strange for diplomats from different countries at the United Nations headquarters to meet by chance or have a brief conversation.

Muslims Must Stand United against Enemies: Rouhani

He made the remarks during the Round Table Session of the Priority of Development and the Challenges held in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur Thursday afternoon. The Prime Minister of Malaysia Mahathir bin Mohamad and the President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan also attended the meeting.

In his speech, Rouhani thanked the Malaysian Prime Minister for holding the Kuala Lumpur Summit, saying that “There were some very important points raised in this summit that can unite and empower the Muslim countries.”

Rouhani emphasized that the Muslim world has many capacities but we do not make good use of this capacity.

“Unfortunately, we are witnessing religious differences [among Muslims] that should not be so. There should be no division among Muslims under the umbrella of monotheism.”

Rouhani further noted that there are many summits in the Muslim world for solidarity and dispute resolution, and it is not expected that all problems will be resolved in one sitting. “However, these summits must force the participating states to look for solutions to the problems.”

“If we can solve some of the problems, then there is a great opportunity for us to take an important step to co-operate. Using the capacity of the Muslim world we must stop the enemies who seek to prevent the Muslims from reaching their goals.”

The president also emphasised that with the awareness of the younger generation and with the greater knowledge it is possible to achieve this goal. “We must develop science and technology in Muslim countries, and increase our awareness of the past and trust what our predecessors have left for us. We should have hopes that victory is near.”

Rouhani had earlier attended Kuala Lumpur Summit 2019 in the Malaysian capital on Thursday morning. A number of Muslim world leaders including those of Malaysia, Turkey, and Qatar, as well as hundreds of elite figures, had taken part in the event.

Iranian President, Japanese PM Meet Behind Closed Doors

Following the private meeting, the high-ranking delegations of Iran and Japan will hold negotiations together.

Upon arrival in Tokyo, the Iranian president was officially welcomed by the Japanese prime minister.

Rouhani landed in Japan following a three-day trip to Malaysia, where he attended the Kuala Lumpur 2019 Summit and held separate meetings with a number of world leaders including Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamed and King Abdullah of Pahang, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

Iran Condemns Pompeo’s Insulting Remarks, Propaganda Show

In a statement on Friday, Mousavi said Pompeo has come to the State Department from the leadership of an infernal, deceitful, pro-regime change, and torturer organization (CIA).

“Having brought his infernal thoughts to the civilized field of diplomacy (State Department), Pompeo is not on a par with any foreign minister in the world, and has no position in this field,” the Iranian spokesman said.

“Foreign ministers are usually harbingers of peace, reconciliation, dialogue, and respect, but Mr Pompeo is a mouthpiece of bullying, deceit, humiliation, and insult with a language of anger, aggressiveness, ignorance, and extremism,” he added.

Mousavi condemned Pompeo’s remarks, and stressed that Americans will get nowhere with such methods.

“So far the image they have presented to the people and elites of the US and the world has been nothing but that of an inefficient, delusive, chaotic, static, and bullying diplomacy and foreign policy,” he added.

In a Thursday speech in Washington, Pompeo claimed that “America hears you, America supports you, America stands with you” Iranian people.

“We do so for the sake of freedom, for the sake of human dignity, for the sake of respect,” he claimed.

“One day, the locks on the doors of the Iranian Embassy here in Washington could be cut off. One day, Iran Air could fly direct to Los Angeles, to Houston. … One day, our leaders could receive one another in good will and not as adversaries. What a moment that would be,” Pompeo further claimed.

The comments came as US Treasury Department imposed sanctions against two Iranian judges for what it called violation of the rights of Iranian citizens as well as their role in sentencing American citizens.

Pompeo also announced visa restrictions for the family members of Iranian officials.

He criticized the Obama administration for failing to offer support to protesters in 2009. “When the opportunity arose, America did not do that.”

Following the November unrest in Iran, the country’s Foreign Ministry summoned the Swiss ambassador, whose country represents the US interests in Iran, to protest Washington’s interference in the Islamic Republic’s internal affairs.

At the time, Iran protested the US’ expression of support for a series of violent riots and protests over the rise in oil price that hit a number of Iranian cities.

Earlier, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif slammed the US’ intervention in Iran’s internal affairs, saying that the US government with such coercive economic actions can’t claim that it’s supporting the Iranian nation.

“The regime, that imposes coercive economic actions and bars delivery of food and drugs to the elderly and patients, can never claim that it’s supporting the Iranian nation. Mr. Pompeo should first answer for the announced terrorist actions and crimes against humanity and against the Iranian nation,” he said at the time.

On the sidelines of the KL Summit, Rouhani also held separate meetings with Prime Minister Mahathir, Malaysian King Abdullah of Pahang, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on issues of mutual interest, regional and international affairs.

Top Regional Officials Discuss Common Challenges at Tehran Security Conference

National security advisors and top security authorities from Iran, Russia, China, India, Afghanistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan have wound up a day-long meeting focusing on the issue of Afghanistan.

In their final statement, the delegates underlined the need to work out mechanisms for regional cooperation in order to counter common security challenges.

“While being aware that common challenges with a transnational nature such as terrorism, narcotics, organized crime, migration, poverty, low level of education and economic weakness threaten the security of regional countries, the delegates stress that actions taken individually by countries have little effect when it comes to countering these challenges, and draw attention to the necessity of working out mechanisms for regional cooperation to tackle these problems,” read part of the statement.

The statement also highlights the need for collective cooperation to establish and reinforce safe transit routes and develop the necessary infrastructure. The participating countries also underlined the necessity of facilitating trade relations among them and continuing to implement plans to contribute to the reconstruction of Afghanistan.

The delegates emphasized that the Afghanistan issue has no military option.

“The only way wo establish peace and security in Afghanistan is to achieve an intra-Afghan negotiated settlement with the focus being on the ownership and control of Afghanistan,” read part of the statement.

They stressed that the continued presence of foreign troops in Afghanistan is one of the key contributors to the ongoing war and instability in the country, and underlined the need for immediate withdrawal of foreign forces from the country.

The statement further highlighted the importance of energy, reiterating that all member states of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) are entitled to have free access to the energy market in the region.
