Iranian Korsi Brings Family Members Together on Yalda Night

Iranian Korsi Brings Family Members Together on Yalda Night

Korsi is a type of low table commonly used in Iran, with a heater underneath it, and blankets thrown over it. It is a traditional item of furniture in the Iranian culture. Family members sit on the floor around the korsi during meals and special events, like Nowruz and Yalda night. Although the tradition of sitting around the korsi has somehow begun to fade away among Iranians, some families have still kept the tradition alive.

Korsi was originally used to bring family members together, though it is also used as a heater during the cold season.

Iranian Korsi Brings Family Members Together on Yalda NightA korsi is defined in some books as a table measuring three spans of a hand high, one meter long, and one meter wide.

People would put heaters under the korsi. Heaters were first powered by coal, then oil and later by electricity. Families who could not afford a heater used a hole under the korsi instead. They would make fire inside the hole to be used as a heater.

Iranian Korsi Brings Family Members Together on Yalda NightFamily members would spread on the korsi a 4m x 4m quilt, which was sometimes as large as 7m x 7m. The korsi quilt was usually part of the bride’s dowry and was so heavy. The quilt was usually made of red-coloured velvet or satin with decorative patterns in the middle and was covered with a white sheet. Over the quilt, they would spread another piece of fabric often made of cashmere or loosely-woven woolen cloth. They would put on that cloth a big round copper tray in which they would put the samovar and food plates.

They would spread comfortable mattresses around the korsi to sit on, and cushions to lean against. The mattresses were often red-coloured with diamond patterns.

The whole thing would provide a warm atmosphere for a friendly get-together and chit-chats.

In the past, people would usually not buy any food items from the market. Women usually collected food items during the year and served it on Yalda night along with food items that guests brought with them. The food items included walnut, watermelon seeds, melons, raisins, Russian olives and dried white mulberry, among others.

As for the tradition of sitting around the korsi, the elder of the family would sit in a place what was rather far from the door of the room, and then other members would sit down next to each other one by one. The closest spot to the door was usually allocated to children.

Members of each family would take a lantern with them each, which would finally result in a beautiful scene when all lanterns were put next together.

Iran, Japan Agree to Continue Close Consultations: Araqchi

Azerbaijan-Armenia Peace Deal Based on Iran’s Proposal: Araqchi

Speaking to reporters at the conclusion of President Rouhani’s visit to Japan, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Seyyed Abbas Araqchi said a series of issues were mooted in the meetings between the Iranian and Japanese authorities, including the bilateral, regional and international issues, as well as the subjects pertaining to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA) and the US sanctions against Tehran.

“It was decided that the two countries continue close consultations,” he added.

Araqchi also noted the presidential visit to Japan took place in response to a June visit to Iran by Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo during the 90th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

Hailing Japan as an “old friend and trade partner” of Iran, the deputy minister said, “We’ve always had close political consultations with Japan. Also this year, it was necessary for the two countries to hold closer and more intensive negotiations because of the 90th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries and considering the ongoing developments, including the US pressures (on Iran) and the unfair sanctions that have been imposed (on Iran) after the (US) withdrawal from the JCPOA.”

According to Araqchi, the Iranian and Japanese officials have held “heavy and intensive negotiations” in Tokyo.

President Rouhani left Tokyo for Tehran on Saturday after a tour that took him earlier to Malaysia.

Art Exhibition Features Mythical Figures on Wooden Spoons

Art Exhibition Features Mythical Figures on Wooden Spoons (5)

The same big spoons used to cook food have now been decorated with mythical figures and hung on the walls of the gallery.

“Old Patterns” is the name of the exhibit where works of art by Forough Rayhani was displayed. It was an exhibition where canvases were replaced with spoons featuring characters of mythology.

Rayhani has already held several exhibitions both at home and abroad.

“’Old Patters’ are recurrent patterns manifested in various forms in the myths and legends of different peoples since old times,” says Rayhani.

“This exhibition happened to begin with old spoons which used to be used in cooking in traditional ceremonies,” he adds.

“I decided to paint on these spoons and draw characters which could somehow represent the originality of these spoons,” he says.

“The reason for choosing old patterns was that the personages on the spoons looked like ancient mythical heroes; of course, these mythical characters do not only include those of Ancient Persia, but those of many European countries as well as Egypt,” he says.

The connection between these old patterns and mythical figures is associated with the theory of Jung, which says “these old patters are present in our unconscious self and keep repeating in different forms in our lives.”

She has been involved with books since she was a child. Her grandfather was the first book seller in Arak. Book-selling has been job in their family passed on through generations.

Currently, Mahdieh’s father, sisters and brother run book shops in Arak, too. However, Mahdieh was thinking of an innovation in her job until she came up with the idea of running a mobile book shop. She is not allowed to drive heavy vehicles as she is too young, and she cannot drive a minibus for the next two years.

Her book shop is located at a stationary place at the moment. She has to wait until she gets old enough to be able to drive a large vehicle that would serve as a mobile book shop.

Iran Has No Problem Sitting for Talks with US: Rouhani

Hassan Rouhani - President of the Islamic Republic of Iran

President Hassan Rouhani also urged American authorities to rectify their approach and get on the right track.

“We have no problems holding a dialogue with the United States about our issues, but they should roll back the wrong path they have been treading over the past one and a half years,” said Rouhani in a meeting with senior Japanese managers in Tokyo before leaving for Tehran on Saturday.

“We should not award a wrongdoer; however, we should not block the path if a wrongdoer wants to make up for his mistake,” he added.

President Rouhani also hit out at Washington’s sanctions on the Iranian nation.

“The US pressure on Iran and other countries is a bitter reality which we are facing today, but what is important is that we should find a way under such tough circumstances to continue having trade and cooperation with each other (Iran and Japan) and take steps to serve the interests of the two nations,” he added.

“Undoubtedly, the United States’ illegal sanctions cannot continue in the long run, and the Americans have to abandon this fruitless and harmful path one day,” the president added.

Rouhani also stressed the importance of relations between Iran and Japan as the two states “are two very important and influential countries in Asia and in the world.”

“The two countries have very good potentialities to boost mutual relations,” he added.

He said Iranian and Japanese nations have had friendly relations since old times, and that trade relations between the two nations goes back more than a thousand years.

He also urged Japan to release Iranian assets frozen at Japanese banks, saying the oil revenues date back to the time before US sanctions were imposed, and, hence, the money must be returned to Iran.
