Luxembourg Blocks US Request to Transfer $1.6 Billion of Iran Assets

Luxembourg Blocks US Request to Transfer $1.6 Billion of Iran Assets
At least $1.6 billion worth of Iranian assets is held in the Clearstream clearing house, a financial company owned by Deutsche Boerse based in Luxembourg.

In an official statement on Monday, Luxembourg announced an appeals court on April 1 found the US seizure demand inadmissible.

The decision confirms earlier remarks by Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani who said on Sunday the country had won a legal victory over the assets that had long been frozen on a US request in Luxembourg.

During a cabinet meeting, Rouhani said “Iran’s central bank and foreign ministry have recently won a very good victory in a legal battle. $1.6 billion of our money was in Luxembourg and the Americans had put their hands on it.”

The money is held in the Clearstream clearing house, a financial company owned by Deutsche Boerse based in Luxembourg.

A New York court in 2012 ordered Iran to pay $7 billion in damages over the September 11 attacks, claiming that Tehran had aided Al-Qaeda by allowing its militants to travel through its territory.

Iran has rejected the allegation and refused to pay the sum.

US Imperialism More Perilous than Coronavirus: Rouhani

US Imperialism More Perilous than Coronavirus: Rouhani

In a telephone conversation with his Venezuelan counterpart on Monday, President Hassan Rouhani said the avarice and bullying of US statesmen has always put pressure on independent and freedom-seeking nations such as Iran and Venezuela.

President Rouhani said the cruel and illegal sanctions of the United States in the field of oil production against Iran and Venezuela are against international rules and human principles.

Rouhani reiterated that Tehran and Caracas have been able to resist in solidarity for years against an invading and aged virus called the United States.

Referring to Iran’s plans and actions against the coronavirus and the successes achieved in the field of research and production of diagnosis kits as well as other required items, he announced the Islamic Republic is ready to share experiences in the fight against the coronavirus with Venezuela.

Elsewhere in his statements, the Iranian president praised the steps taken at the OPEC Plus summit stressing that Tehran and Caracas must continue to work together to reduce production and return prices to a balanced level.

Stating that cooperation between the two countries should continue, the president said the development of cooperation and ties between the two countries will certainly benefit the two great nations.

For his part, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro expressed solidarity with the Iranian government and people and praised the country’s success in fight against the coronavirus.

“Iran and Venezuela have always been united and in one front in their fight against imperialism,” said Maduro.

Today, all the countries of the world are in a joint battle to fight COVID-19, he said, adding that defeating this virus is a difficult task that requires a lot of effort and cooperation.

Maduro also called on Iran to share its experience in the fight against COVID-19 proposing that a video conference be held between the two countries’ health ministers in this regard.

Referring to the OPEC summit he expressed hope that the oil output cut agreement will be implemented to achieve stability in the global oil market.

“Despite extensive efforts to prevent the progress of liberal countries, the United States has not succeeded,” the Venezuelan president underscored.

Iran Says US Has No Legal Right to Veto IMF’s Measures

In remarks at a press conference on Monday, Ali Rabiei decried the US’s attempts at blocking Iran’s request for an emergency IMF loan for the fight against coronavirus.

“The US is legally in no position to obstruct the natural and expectable performance of the international institutions and organizations,” he underlined.

The Iranian spokesman said the US must realize that the international institutions are not the American properties and assets, nor are the other nations under its command, and Washington cannot dictate to the other countries such cruelly.

“We believe that the US has no right to veto the (International Monetary) Fund’s measures. No right has been determined to veto the Fund’s measures, and such right does not exist,” Rabiei emphasized.

“What we have been informed of is that the other members of the IMF will also prevent the US’ anti-human measure, and we believe that the IMF will make decisions independently,” he stated.

“We have been paying this fund (IMF) our membership fees for many years. We have also never made any request from the fund throughout the past years, and today, it is the Iranian people’s natural right to be able to use it (the loan) under the conditions that the sanctions are threatening the lives and livelihood of people,” the spokesman noted.

He said while Iran is struggling with the sanctions, the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic, which is threatening the lives of all people across the world, has created a new suffering for Iran.

Tehran regards this as its legitimate right to get an IMF loan, Rabiei added.

He finally noted that the IMF’s measure will show the world that its cooperation in the international affairs could not follow the “unilateral policies” of any party.

The IMF’s independent decision “will be a symbol of moral and humanitarian nature of the funds that are created for the humanitarian issues,” he concluded.

Iran has asked the International Monetary Fund for a $5 billion loan to deal with the outbreak of COVID-19.

Last week, President Hassan Rouhani said it would be unacceptable for the IMF to unfairly refuse Iran’s application for the loan that it needs for the fight against the coronavirus.

Continuation of Sanctions Violation of Basic Human Rights: Rouhani

Continuation of Sanctions Violation of Basic Human Rights

Rouhani called the continuation of sanctions, which actually include food and medicine embargo, a violation of the most obvious basic human rights and a clear example of health and food terrorism.

He made the remarks during a cabinet meeting on Sunday evening during which he also issued necessary instructions to the health ministry to further develop laboratory tests and monitoring of patients.

Rouhani also called on universities and knowledge-based companies to further assist the health ministry and the government in preventing and combating the coronavirus.

3 Countries Where Hunting and Weaponry Are Properly Regulated

3 Countries Where Hunting and Weaponry Are Properly Regulated

Most people attribute the high number of cases of gun violence to these extended freedoms. The debate about gun violence attributable to relaxed gun laws is always contentious. In other countries around the globe, gun laws are properly regulated.

The measure for success for gun laws is all about effectiveness and not the number of regulations. A country can have many laws that are not effective. Weak structures of enforcement mean that countries that have a low number of guns end up with many victims of gun violence. When looking at the regulation, we look at the intention of the law. For example, restricting gun acquisition among private citizens is unnecessary, yet it can lead to less gun violence.

In this list, we look at countries that are achieving the coveted milestones of hunting and weaponry regulations. We look at access to weapons for hunting purposes and access to firearms in the private sphere. According to https://huntingmark.com/6-5-creedmoor-scopes/, some restrictive laws on guns can stifle the growth of hunting as a sport. Without access to hunting-range weapons, the sport will be dead. Here are three chosen countries that have well-regulated hunting and weapons regulations.

Germany’s progressive approach

Although there are many guns in the population in Germany, every incidence of mass shootings leads to tightened gun laws. The government may issue firearm licenses to private citizens for hunting purposes. However, the number of firearms and the type differ significantly. The law prohibits private ownership of automatic firearms. The government also reserves the right to deny anyone from accessing guns. Background checks are extensive and exhaustive.

The law allows the authorities to conduct an extensive background check for all applicants. Applicants below 25 years must undergo a psychiatric evaluation. Those above 25 years also have to pass a comprehensive background check and can be recalled for a psychiatric examination at any time. If a firearm holder is involved in drunk-driving or road rage, the authorities can subject the person to further psychological testing to determine fit.

The country has one of the lowest gun violence cases in the world despite over 5 million legal firearms active in the private domain.

Japan’s no gun policy

Private guns are restricted but can be allowed in exceptional circumstances. You cannot own a firearm for personal protection in Japan. Carrying a gun is only allowed for security personnel. Carrying weapons in public openly or in concealed form is vehemently restricted. The fines for violations are stiff with a maximum jail term, now standing at 15 years if you are found in possession of an illegal firearm.

If you apply for private ownership of a gun, the police will likely conduct extensive background checks on your and immediate families before extending the checks to relatives. All swords and arms must be kept in a safe place where only the licensed owner can access.  Crime syndicates still manage to smuggle weapons into the country, but gun violence is extremely low in the country.

The country often records zero deaths related to gun violence annually, a figure that would make Americans uncomfortable considering that almost 40,000 people died of fatal gunshot wounds.

Australia responsive approach

Carrying a gun was a cultural heritage, and pride issue in Australia before the Port Arthur shooting. The incident, which claimed the lives of 35 people, rallied the country into a new dispensation. The government can issue gun licenses to private citizens. However, just like Germany and Japan, you cannot carry a weapon in a public place. You cannot carry a concealed or open gun.

Automatic firearms, often used by mass murderers, are prohibited from the private domain. Hunting firearms permits are awarded only after vigorous and robust background checks. The authorities reserve the right to deny anyone access to a firearm, even for hunting. Individuals can only carry guns when they are heading to hunting or target shooting. The regulations are effective in reducing the number of cases attributed to gun violence.

The success of any regulation is all about how well it solves the intended problem. Weapons should only be used for the intended purpose. Carrying or owning multiple guns will not be a problem if the owner is capable of handling the weapons for the intended purpose. Unfortunately, the only way you can know the suitability of the person is to subject them to thorough testing and checking.
