Iran Executes Rouhollah Zam on Charge of ‘Corruption on Earth’

He was executed on Saturday morning, according to Iranian official media.

Amad News was notorious for disseminating incriminating content against the Islamic establishment, insulting the sanctity of Iranian Muslims and publishing fake news in order to drive a wedge between the Iranian people and government.

Zam faced charges of having “committed offenses against the country’s internal and external security” and “espionage for the French intelligence service,” alongside “corruption on earth” as well as insult to “the sanctity of Islam” according to an indictment released in February.

He was arrested in October 2019 by the Intelligence Organization of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corp (IRGC).

The meticulous intelligence operation involved outmaneuvering the intelligence services of certain Western countries, especially France, which offered Zam guidance and protection for his operation.

“Intelligence forces had been keeping a watchful eye on Rouhollah Zam’s movements for a long time and he stepped into the intelligence trap set by IRGC some two years ago. Ultimately, we were able to arrest him through cooperation with other intelligence services,” Second Brigadier General Mohammad Tavallaei, a high-ranking IRGC official, said at the time.

Iran Strongly Blasts Erdogan’s ‘Interventionist’ Remarks

In a tweet on Friday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said the Turkish ambassador to Tehran was notified of Iran’s dismay over Erdoğan’s comments in Baku.

“The Turkish ambassador was reminded that it is not wise to base [a country’s] foreign policy on delusions,” the tweet read.

“There are many in Turkey who know history well. It is necessary that they remind their statesmen of the main reason for which poems were written,” he added, referring to the Araz poem recited by Erdogan in a victory parade in Baku.

Iranian lawmakers also reacted to Erdoğan’s comments.

“Erdoğan should pay attention to the fate of those who had an eye on Iran such as [former Iraqi dictator] Saddam Hussein,” said an MP, adding Iran will give them a strong slap in the face.

“The last ruler who wished Iran to be annexed to his country’s territory was smoked out. Mr. Erdoğan! Read some history instead of poetry,” said another legislator. 

Yet another lawmaker noted the Turkish president is delusional.

Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, the special aide to Iran’s parliament speaker, also expressed surprise at Erdoğan’s move.

“I was surprised by Mr. Erdoğan’s remarks. I think the Turkish president himself doesn’t know what he said,” he noted.

“Mr. Erdoğan! There is a difference between being a neighbour and having an eye on a neighbouring country for conquest. Please review the history of Iran, especially that of the Islamic Republic of Iran, carefully,” he said.

In the meantime, representatives of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei in northeastern Iranian provinces of West Azerbaijan and East Azerbaijan said Erdoğan’s comments “targeted Iran’s territorial integrity.”

“The poem recited by the Turkish president were originally composed by Iranians separated from their motherland,” read the statement.

During his visit to Baku on December 10, 2020, Erdogan attended a military parade that saluted Azerbaijan’s recent victory in the bloody Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

At the ceremony, which was also attended by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, the Turkish president recited a poem which bemoans the separation of Azerbaijan under the Tukmenchay Treaty during the Russo-Persian War (1826–28), but Erdogan referred to it in the context of the occupation of Azerbaijani territories of Lachin and Karabakh.

Iran Reports Lowest Daily Rise in COVID-19 Cases Since Nov. 10

In a press briefing on Friday, Sima-Sadat Lari said the virus has also killed 232 patients since Thursday noon, increasing the overall death toll to 51,728.

She said so far 787,853 patients have recovered from the disease or been discharged from the hospital.

Lari went on to say that 5,760 patients are also in critical conditions caused by more severe infection.

The spokeswoman noted that 6,611,783 COVID-19 tests have been taken across the country so far.

She said currently 34 cities are in the “red zone”, 260 in the “orange zone”, and 154 in the “yellow zone” in terms of coronavirus outbreak.

Iran Condemns Bahrain’s Plan to Normalize Relations with Israel

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Saeed Khatibzadeh said on Friday that ambassador of Turkey to Tehran has been summoned over the “interventionist and unacceptable” remarks that Turkish President Erdogan has made during his visit to the Republic of Azerbaijan.

The Iranian Foreign Minister’s assistant and director general of Eurasia at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned Turkey’s ambassador to Tehran on Friday, December 11, 2020, to voice Iran’s strong protest against the Turkish president’s comments, Khatibzadeh added.

The envoy has been reminded that the Islamic Republic of Iran demands an immediate explanation from the Turkish government for the issue, the spokesman noted.

The Turkish ambassador has been also notified that “the era of territorial claims and warmongering and expansionist empires” has ended long ago, Khatibzadeh added.

“It was made clear to the Turkish ambassador that the Islamic Republic of Iran would not allow anybody to meddle in issues about its territorial integrity, and as its (Iran’s) glorious history testifies, it would not cede even an inch when it comes to its national security,” the spokesman underlined.

His comments came after Turkish President Erdogan provoked controversy when he recited lines from a folk song that promises a reunion of Azeri-speaking people from Iran and Azerbaijan Republic, who are now separated by the Aras border river.

The Turkish leader made the comments at a speech to the “Victory Parade” in Baku on Thursday.

US in No Position to Set Conditions for Rejoining JCPOA: Iran

“President Erdogan was not informed that what he ill-recited in Baku refers to the forcible separation of areas north of Aras from Iranian motherland,” Zarif tweeted Friday.

“Didn’t he realize that he was undermining the sovereignty of the Republic of Azerbaijan?” he asked rhetorically.

“NO ONE can talk about OUR beloved Azerbaijan,” he added.

In a speech to the “Victory Parade” in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan Republic, Erdogan recited a famous poem which promises a reunion of Azeri-speaking people from Iran and Azerbaijan Republic, who are now separated by the border river.

Iran Congratulates Iraq on Anniversary of Victory over ISIS

In a statement released on Friday, Saeed Khatibzadeh hailed the victory as a result of the firm resolve and integrated fortitude of the Iraqi government and nation as well as all military and security forces of Iraq, and said the triumph over inclusive terrorism has been inspired by the Iraqi religious authority, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani.

Highlighting Iran’s support for Iraq in the fight against ISIS terrorism, the spokesperson said, “The Iranian government and nation have always stood by the Iraqi government and nation and will spare no effort to contribute to Iraq’s solidarity, security, stability, establishment, development, and prosperity.”

He also lauded the sacrifices that Iranian and Iraqi martyrs made in the holy fight against terrorism, saying, “The collaboration and rapport between the two governments culminated in the assassination of martyr Qassem Soleimani and martyr Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, known as the commanders of the fight against terrorism and extremism.”

“Although the military force of Daesh (ISIS) has been defeated, the Takfiri, anti-human, and terrorist thoughts and the overt and covert regional and extra-regional supports for that (ISIS) continue, and it is necessary for the international community to be vigilant in the face of the ideological spread and resurgence of that current,” Khatibzadeh added.

In November 2017, Iraqi military forces captured the border town of Rawa, the last remaining town under ISIS control, marking the collapse of the terror group’s self-proclaimed caliphate.

Late Iranian commander Major General Qassem Soleimani announced on November 21, 2017, that the self-proclaimed caliphate of Daesh terrorist group had formally collapsed in Islamic territories after recapture of its last stronghold in Syria’s Albu Kamal.

In early January 2020, a US drone strike near Baghdad International Airport assassinated Lt. General Soleimani and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the second-in-command of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) anti-terror group, along with several others.

Daily Rise in Iran’s COVID-19 Cases at All-Time High Again

In a press briefing on Thursday, Health Ministry spokeswoman Sima-Sadat Lari reported 10,403 new cases of COVID-19 infection, raising the total number of cases to 1,083,023.

So far, Lari added, 778,160 patients have recovered from the disease or been discharged from the hospital.

Lari said 5,768 patients are also in critical conditions caused by more severe infection.

The spokeswoman noted that 6,568,742 COVID-19 tests have been taken across the country so far.
She said currently 34 cities are in the “red zone”, 260 in the “orange zone”, and 154 in the “yellow zone” in terms of coronavirus outbreak.

In his message, Mansour Gholami said Afghanistan definitely has a bright future given the Afghan youth who are hungry for knowledge.

He said despite the enemies’ invasion of Afghanistan, this country has maintained its brotherly relations with the Iranian nation.

He noted the enemies cannot separate the two nation with “walls” as people of both countries are connected through affection and brotherhood.

The minister reiterated that the Iranian nation will stand by their Afghan brothers in the domain of science and knowledge.

Present at the ceremony were Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and his Afghan counterpart Ashraf Ghani, who attended the event via videoconference due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The two presidents described the project as an important and significant one which would help revive both countries’ economic and boost mutual cooperation.

The Iranian president said the project will hopefully bring prosperity to both nations, which share a common history and culture.

He said the railway will further strengthen bonds between the two peoples who already enjoy a good relationship.

President Rouhani described the event as an unforgettable day for both nations.

The Afghan president, in turn, said the railway project was the result of tireless efforts by both countries aimed boosting regional links and economic welfare.

He said the inauguration of the project despite the restrictions brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic shows the firm determination of both countries.

He also noted the landmark project will definitely give fresh impetus to economic cooperation between the two sides.
