President Hassan Rouhani noted on Monday, “The protection of the environment is not a preferential matter; rather, it is an obligation and a duty.

Speaking at a meeting of the High Council of Environmental Protection, he underlined that his administration has secured good environmental achievements.

President Rouhani said the government has had environmental concerns and has paid due regard to the protection of the country’s natural resources.

He said the government has adopted different measures to protect the environment and has had good accomplishments.

“The government has taken giant steps in this regard so far in the form of coherent programs, including measures to reduce atmospheric particulate matter, revive the Lake Urmia and lagoons, plant saplings and tackle flooding,” he said.

He said measures have also been adopted to deal with air pollution.

“While seriously caring about environmental issues, the High Council of Environmental Protection seeks to facilitate the country’s development, too,” he said.

He underlined the coronavirus pandemic should not deflect attention from the key issue of the environment.

Iran Holds Talks with German, Russian, UN Envoys on Afghan Peace Process

Taherian discussed the latest Afghan developments in a Tuesday conversation with the UN secretary-general’s special representative for Afghanistan Deborah Lyons.

During the talks, the two sides conferred on the latest status of intra-Afghan negotiations, the peace process in Afghanistan, and the establishment of sustainable peace through diplomatic solutions.

Earlier on Monday, Taherian had discussed the issue with Afghan Foreign Minister Mohammad Hanif Atmar as well as the German and Russian special envoys for Afghanistan.

In these conversations, the Iranian envoy underlined the necessity of reducing violence and the need for collaboration among the friends of Afghanistan in establishing sustainable peace through diplomatic solutions.

He also described intra-Afghan negotiations as the most appropriate way to end the crisis in Afghanistan and relieve the Afghan people’s pains, and expressed Tehran’s preparedness for any assistance in this regard.

Taliban Delegation Arrives in Iran for Talks on Afghan Peace Process

In a Tuesday statement, Saeed Khatibzadeh said the trip is a pre-arranged visit.

“This delegation arrived in Tehran this morning based on arrangements already made and upon the invitation of the Foreign Ministry of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and was welcomed by foreign ministry officials,” he said.

“During their stay in Tehran, the Taliban’s political delegation will have meetings with Iranian officials, including the respected foreign minister and Iran’s special envoy for Afghanistan, and discuss the peace trend in Afghanistan as well as relevant issues and topic,” he said.

Iran Launches Phase Three of Tests on Quantum Key Distribution

Present at the unveiling ceremony was head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi, who described the quantum technology as very important.

“The quantum technology is a very significant one whose roadmap was initiated in modern industrial countries in the early 21st century, and the world has seriously stepped into this realm in the recent decade,” he said.

“Theoretical issues go back 80 years, and it was in the late 90s when Western countries began work on this at the laboratory and hardware level,” said Salehi.

“We also started practical work at the AEOI in 2016,” he added.

“In June 2020, we tested this project at the AEOI at a distance of 300 metres at a high rate. We managed to produce 117 bits per second of quantum key,” he said.

“The next phase of this project covers the distance between the Azadi Tower and the Milad Tower (two major landmarks in Tehran) which are almost 7 kilometres apart, and will hopefully be conducted next summer,” he explained.

“The following stages of data transmission will be carried out at higher and longer distances by drones and hot-air balloons. Afterwards, we will be ready to install the equipment on satellites,” he added.

Five Iranians Killed in Avalanche on Turkish Border: Foreign Ministry

In a Monday statement, Saeed Khatibzadeh said their bodies have been recovered and will be transferred to Iran after the necessary arrangements are made.

“Based on the details received from relevant organizations, following an avalanche when five Iranian koolbars (people carrying goods across the border over their back, usually across rough terrain and mountainous areas) went missing on the Iran-Turkey border, the [Iranian] foreign ministry made phone contacts and met our country’s consul general in Erzurum, and the Contingency Headquarters in the [Iranian] West Azerbaijan Province followed up on the issue,” said the spokesman.

“Iran sent two memos to Turkish officials, one from Iran’s Embassy in Ankara and the other from the General Consular Department to the Turkish Embassy in Tehran, requesting permission for a search team from the Iranian Red Crescent Society to be sent to the site of the incident and [requesting] Turkish forces cooperate with them to find the bodies of the missing Iranians,” he added.

“Of course, these efforts will continue until their bodies are transferred to Iran,” Khatibzadeh said.

“Border officials have always urged Iranian nationals to avoid illegally crossing the border, so that, given the conditions in the area, they will not run into problems similar to the one these five fellow countrymen faced,” he said.

Khatibzadeh also expressed his gratitude to border authorities and the Turkish Red Crescent Society for cooperating to establish the fate of those five Iranians.

Iranian, Azeri Officials Discuss Promotion of Economic Ties

In the Monday meeting, the Iranian top diplomat and the Azeri official, who is also the co-chairman of Iran-Azerbaijan Joint Economic Cooperation Commission, discussed the latest developments in bilateral economic relations as well as other fields of mutual cooperation.

Zarif praised Mr Mustafayev’s special position and his efforts to promote cooperation between the two countries, especially considering the achievements of the recent meeting of the Joint Economic Cooperation Commission which was held in Tehran last week.

He also expressed Iran’s preparedness for serious and effective participation in the reconstruction of the liberated areas, especially in the fields of energy, technical-engineering services, agriculture, mine clearance, and repairing mosques and historical-cultural sites.

The Azeri official, in turn, praised Iran’s stances on the Karabakh crisis, and highlighted Baku’s plans for using the capacities of the liberated areas for establishment of stability and development. He also elaborated on certain economic, transit, and transport projects in the region.

Mustafayev further provided explanations regarding the achievements of the 14th meeting of Iran-Azerbaijan Joint Economic Cooperation Commission on bilateral collaborations in the fields of mine clearance, use of Iranian companies in the reconstruction of liberated lands, agriculture, reconstruction of religious and cultural sites, transport and logistics, railway, bridge construction, and providing facilities for cargo transportation from Iran without any need for unloading the cargo in Azerbaijan’s customs offices.

Iran Health Ministry’s Updates on COVID-19 – January 25

In a press briefing on Monday, Health Ministry spokeswoman Sima-Sadat Lari reported 6,309 new cases of COVID-19 infection, raising the total number of cases to 1,379,286.

So far, Lari added, 1,171,070 patients have recovered from the disease or been discharged from the hospital.

Lari said 4,057 patients are also in critical conditions caused by more severe infection.
The spokeswoman noted that 8,960,186 COVID-19 tests have been taken across the country so far.

She said currently 18 cities are in the “orange” zone, 154 are in the “yellow” zone, and 276 are in the “blue” zone in terms of coronavirus outbreak.

Iran Sees No Limit to Expansion of Cooperation with Azerbaijan: Zarif

In the Monday meeting, Foreign Minister Zarif and his Azeri counterpart Jeyhun Bayramov discussed major issues of mutual interest between the two countries in the bilateral and regional arenas.

The top Iranian diplomat said he is delighted to be visiting the Republic of Azerbaijan after liberation of the occupied Azeri territories, paid tribute to the victims of war, particularly the civilians, and expressed sympathy with their families.

Foreign Minister Zarif also described the new stage as a significant juncture for helping establish peace and stability in the region and for the interests of all parties.

The Iranian minister said he has started his tour of the region with a visit to Baku in an effort to contribute to the establishment of peace and calm, expressing satisfaction with the growing number of intensive meetings between the Iranian and Azeri officials in recent months.

Foreign Minister Zarif further voiced Iran’s readiness for active and extensive participation in the reconstruction of the liberated Azeri lands situated along the common border of the two countries, highlighted the fruitful negotiations between Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan in the most recent meeting of the Economic Cooperation Joint Commission, and stressed that the views expressed by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan in a Monday meeting demonstrate the two countries’ serious resolve for cooperation.

Iran does not consider any limits to cooperation with the Republic of Azerbaijan, Foreign Minister Zarif noted, adding that various economic sectors in Iran are fully prepared for active participation in the economic projects in the Republic of Azerbaijan.

The Iranian foreign minister finally described the establishment of calm in the region as a great opportunity for mutual cooperation in the transit industry and bringing into operation the East-West and the North-South corridors.

For his part, Foreign Minister Bayramov said the relations between Baku and Tehran are based upon friendship and historical and cultural commonalities.

He also praised the Islamic Republic of Iran for the stances adopted by its high-ranking officials and people on the Republic of Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.

Pointing to the reciprocal visits by the Iranian and Azeri high-ranking delegations, Foreign Minister Bayramov referred to the latest meeting of the Economic Cooperation Joint Commission as an indication that the enhancement of economic ties is one of the top priorities in the bilateral relations.

The two senior diplomats also discussed cooperation between Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan in the fields relating to the Caspian Sea, cultural affairs, water, transportation industry, international affairs, and trilateral cooperation with Turkey.

Baku Welcomes Iran’s Participation in Karabakh Reconstruction, Aliyev Tells Zarif

The top Iranian diplomat, who is visiting Baku in the first leg of a tour of the Caucasus and Turkey, held talks with Azeri President Aliyev on Monday morning.

In the meeting, Foreign Minister Zarif congratulated the Republic of Azerbaijan’s people and government on the recent victories, stressing the need for the promotion of cooperation between the two neighbours.

He also welcomed a six-party regional cooperation initiative proposed by the president of the Republic of Azerbaijan, expressing Iran’s readiness for help and cooperation in any field contributing to regional peace, stability and calm.

Zarif then pointed to the successful visits that Azerbaijan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister paid to Iran, saying the mutual cooperation, particularly in the economic fields, is ready to make a leap.

The top diplomat also expressed delight with the results of the 14th meeting of Iran-Azerbaijan Joint Commission on Economic Cooperation, voicing Iran’s readiness for active participation in the process of reconstructing the recently-liberated Azeri lands, particularly in the construction activities, for the export of technical and engineering services, and cooperation in the electricity and energy industries, agriculture, extra-territorial cultivation, mine-sweeping, as well as the reconstruction of mosques and historical sites.

President Aliyev, for his part, praised Iran’s stances on the recent developments in the region, hailed the level of cooperation between the two nations, and said there exists a positive atmosphere for the expansion of relations in all fields, specifically the economic cooperation.

Enumerating the economic projects carried out jointly by the two countries, the Azeri leader welcomed the participation of Iranian companies in reconstruction of areas in the Karabakh region.

Aliyev also expressed satisfaction with Iran’s view on the six-party regional cooperation platform, saying the initiative would benefit peace and common interests in the region.

The Azeri President finally welcomed plans for holding trilateral meetings among the Republic of Azerbaijan, Iran and Russia, as well as among Azerbaijan, Iran and Turkey in future.

The meeting was also attended by Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister and the Foreign Policy Advisor to the President of Azerbaijan.

Iran’s Petrochemical Industry Reaching Self-Sufficiency

The Sarv Oil and Natural Gas Industries Development Company and the Arian Methanol Company have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on joint cooperation to supply catalysts required in the process of producing synthesis gas at the Methanol Unit.

The MoU was signed on the sidelines of the 25th International Oil, Natural Gas and Petrochemical Event.

“Catalysts are the beating hearts of petrochemical industries,” said Amir Hooman Karimi Vosoogh, the managing director of Sarv Oil and Natural Gas Industries Development Company.

“With holdings and petrochemical industries trusting Iranian-made products and procuring catalysts for a petrochemical complex from a knowledge-based company at very high prices, they will help boost and domestically develop this industry,” he added.

He said the Sarv company has a brilliant background when it comes to producing catalysts and has constantly produced catalysts for the country’s petrochemical, refinery and steel industries for years.
