Ghalibaf: US agreed to take first step to revive JCPOA

He made the comment in an interview with the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah’s news channel Al Manar.

Ghalibaf said there is nothing called temporary commitment and obligations undertaken under the JCPOA have been approved by UN Security Council in the form of a resolution.

Ghalibaf noted that the US is by nature after imposing its will on others but Iran will not give in to bullying. Ghalibaf also said the US only seeks to weaken Iran and the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program is only an excuse. He referred to the Vienna talks, saying only after it’s lifted the anti-Iran sanctions will the US be able to join the negotiations.

The Iranian Parliament speaker underlined that the US must stop trying to bully Iran because the Islamic Revolution will not allow Iranians to surrender to arrogance.
He dismissed as a lie US claims that Iran defies International law. He said if other parties to the Vienna talks respect International law, a deal will be within reach in a reasonably short time.

Ghalibaf underscored that the Vienna talks are exclusively about the nuclear deal and Iran will not allow the negotiations to be tied to other matters like the nation’s missile program.

5 Syrian soldiers killed, 20 wounded in Daesh attack

Sunday’s attack took place at approximately 7pm (17:00 GMT), Syrian state media reported on Monday, adding that a military vehicle in the Badia area came under a rocket attack followed by artillery shelling by Daesh fighters.

Daesh, which declared a caliphate straddling parts of Syria and Iraq in 2014, has lost all the territory that was under its control in 2019.

However, the terror group continues to wage a low-level fight in both countries, launching frequent hit-and-run raids from desert hideouts on either side of the border with Iraq.

Iran says to pursue legal case against Airbus, ATR

Mohammad Mohammadi Bakhsh said on Sunday that Airbus and ATR have consistently refused to honor their contractual obligations regarding the supply of spare parts to Iran under the pretext that they could face American penalties.

“We are protesting this (decision) and we will pursue the legal case as whenever the issue is raised they attribute it to the (US) sanctions,” Mohammadi Bakhsh was quoted as saying by the ILNA news agency.

The comments come amid ongoing efforts to salvage a 2015 nuclear deal which has unraveled since the US pulled out of the agreement three years ago and imposed sanctions on Iran.

The sanctions caused Airbus and ATR to suspend aircraft supply contracts with Iran just after they delivered a handful of planes to the country in 2018.

However, the two plane manufacturers have refused to supply spare parts needed to maintain and repair those planes in Iran citing the threat of American punishment for engaging in any business activity with Tehran.

Mohammadi Bakhsh added Airbus and ATR should treat the spare parts issue in a manner different than plane deliveries as he insisted that failure to supply the parts could cause major incidents in the Iranian civil aviation sector.

“Airbus and ATR should never use the life of people as a pretext to comply with sanction issues,” he continued, noting that Iran will pursue the legal case against the two companies regardless of what happens to the future of talks between Iran and world powers to revive the nuclear deal.

Iran: US main culprit in assassination of Gen. Soleimani

The judiciary’s deputy for international affairs said some countries also provided logistical assistance in the targeted killing near Baghdad.

“The objective of the Islamic Republic of Iran is that, in cooperation with the government of Iraq as the country where the crime took place, all perpetrators and agents and those who ordered the terrorist crime are identified and brought to justice,” Kazem Gharibabadi said.

“Top on the list of perpetrators and those who ordered the terrorist crime is the former US president. [Donald] Trump is the one who acknowledged he has committed this terrorist act and took pride in it. His confession is a citable evidence proof in international courts.”

Ghariababadi added that criminal proceedings on the assassination are underway and the investigations will soon be completed.

The official also dismissed US claim that it conducted the assassination in self-defense. He said, under article 51 of the UN Charter, there should be an armed move or aggression to warrant action as legitimate defense, stressing that even the likelihood of an armed move is not a license for action in defense.

“On this issue, it should be noted that, General Qassem Soleimani was on a civilian and informal mission and was conveying a message to Iraqi officials on how to resolve regional issues. This assassination can also be an instance of crime against humanity,” he said.

General Soleimani and top Iraqi commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis were killed in a drone attack near Baghdad’s airport on January 3, 2020. The assassination was directly ordered by Donald Trump.

Israeli troops crack-down on pro-hunger striker protest

Palestinians staged a demonstration in the city of Umm al-Fahem on Sunday night to express solidarity with Palestinian prisoner Hisham Abu Hawwash, who has been on hunger strike for 140 consecutive days in protest against Israel’s so-called administrative detention policy.

The protesters called for the release of the hunger striker following reports of a severe deterioration in his health condition.

The Israeli troops physically assaulted the protesters and detained four of them.

Earlier on Sunday, a similar protest took place in the West Bank province of al-Khalil (Hebron) demanding the immediate release of Abu Hawwash.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on Sunday expressed serious concern about the situation of Abu Hawwash, stating, “Every effort must be made to find a solution to avoid irreversible health consequences and possible tragic loss of life… Every detainee must be treated humanely and with dignity.”

Abu Hawwash, a father of five children, was arrested in October 2020 and held in an Israeli jail under administrative detention, a form of imprisonment in which the individual is never tried and can be held indefinitely.

The Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS) attorney, Jawad Boulos, has already said the doctors have confirmed that Abu Hawwash is facing the risk of sudden death at any moment.

The Palestinian Commission of Detainees’ and Ex-Detainees’ Affairs has also added the health condition of Abu Hawwash has reached a critical stage and could face irreversible health consequences at any moment, calling for his immediate release.

There are thousands of Palestinians held in Israeli jails. Human rights organizations say Israel violates all the rights and freedoms granted to prisoners by the Geneva Convention.

Israeli jail authorities keep Palestinian prisoners under deplorable conditions lacking proper hygienic standards.

Palestinian inmates have also been subjected to systematic torture, harassment, and repression.
According to the Palestinian Prisoners Society (PPS), Israel issued 1,595 administrative detention orders against Palestinians in the occupied territories in 2021.

Hackers target Israeli outlets on General’s anniversary

Reports of the hack began trickling in online just after midnight in Israel, with social media posts first indicating that the Maariv Online had had its Twitter account compromised. Initially, it appeared that three posts had been shared on the account, two of which included images of an explosion and a third including depictions of prominent regional figures Gen. Soleimani and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis.

The image depicting an explosion appears to be an altered photo pulled from earlier video footage that appeared to show an Iranian strike against a mock-up of Israel’s Dimona nuclear facility.

Unlike the original video content, the photo depicts a projectile being ejected from a ring being worn by an unidentified figure. Alongside the depiction is a phrase that reads: “We are close to you where you don’t think about it.”

Speculation suggests that figure in the photo is meant to be Soleimani, as the ring shown is similar to one worn by him.

The strike against Maariv Online did not affect the outlet’s homepage, but the same could not be said for fellow Israeli outlet The Jerusalem Post.

As reports emerged of the hacking of Maariv Online, the Post’s website appeared to have troubles loading content before eventually giving users a 404 error message. Moments afterward, the same explosive image that first made an appearance on Maariv Online took centerstage on the Post’s homepage.

While Maariv Online has not tweeted a statement on the events, The Jerusalem Post tweeted they were aware of the situation.

“We are aware of the apparent hacking of our website, alongside a direct threat of Israel,” reads their tweet.

“We are working to resolve the issue & thank readers for your patience and understanding. For now, you can continue reading us on our app,” it added.

The tweets have since been deleted from Maariv Online’s Twitter account. As for The Jerusalem Post, their front page remained inaccessible for about two hours before the site’s homepage was successfully returned.

Iran envoy: JCPOA members needed to guarantee implementation of deal

Ambassador Mohsen Baharvand wrote on his Instagram account on Sunday night that all the current members of the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) agreement, and even the current US administration have agreed that the US behavior after reaching the JCPOA agreement in unilateral refraining from fulfilling its commitments were both illegal and unconstructive.

“They all also agreed that there need to be guarantee that such weird behaviors will not be repeated and in the future everyone needs to act in accordance with the UNSC Resolution 2231,” he added.

He stated that all the same, none of them have thus far presented any noticeable initiative, either political, or legal, or even practical initiative for guaranteeing the proper implementation of those important and strategic agreements in the future.

“That is while the legal international foundations, such as the UNSC, and the high capacity banking transaction mechanisms provide broad capacities for initiating such guarantees,” wrote Baharvand.

The Iranian envoy noted that it was enough that the case would have been the other way around and the other side needed to give guarantee; since in that case they would have presented dozens of political and legal initiatives and used the entire international legal and political capacities in that respect.

He said that the Iranian delegation has the required capacity for proposing such initiatives, adding that “we are obliged to support our country’s delegation in those sensitive negotiations”.

The 8th round of Iran’s nuclear talks aimed at terminating the sanctions will start on Monday after a three-day hiatus due to the beginning of the Christian New Year.

Iran’s top negotiator Ali Bagheri Kani has arrived in Vienna on Monday morning.

The ways to justify the termination of the US-imposed sanctions, as well as measures aimed at making sure that the US will not once again exit from the JCPOA, or at least to minimize that possibility, and that that country will not impose new sanctions contrary to the text of the reached agreements, will be the most important topics in next few days’ negotiations.

Khatibzadeh: US arms sales not bringing peace, showing double standards

Khatibzadeh was speaking at his weekly presser in Tehran on Monday.

He said “We advise US to try to understand the realities of the region, instead of tampering regional arrangements and engaging in behind-the-scenes designs to undermine regional calm, and to know that, billion-dollar sales of advanced weapons not only do not bring peace to the region, but also expose their double standards.”

He also emphasized on the formation of and inclusive government in Afghanistan, adding “The path to the future of Afghanistan, is that of the realization of the will of the people, all of them. We are in contact with all Afghan groups, including the Taliban, and we have worked to ensure that people suffer as little as possible, whether the refugees or those facing problems in the territory of Afghanistan.”

Khatibzadeh also touched on the Vienna talks over the revival of the Iran nuclear deal and said: “If today, we have a common text, that is because the western side realized that it should back down on its maximalist demands. The western sides have realized that they cannot have any demands on the nuclear issue beyond the JCPOA.”

Referring to some reports that the Russian envoy is talking to the US on behalf of Iran, Khatibzadeh said, “There is a clear channel for exchange of views between Iran and the US.

Viewpoints are exchanged in written form, but informally. And these are done through the coordinator of the joint commission [of the JCPOA],” he said.

The spokesman also addressed the US stance on human rights, saying human rights is a sheer means for Washington to its ends.

“Human rights is a tool in the toolkit of the foreign policy of the United States, and Washington has always used it against those who resisted the colonial policies of the US, or did not support them. Everywhere, there are governments that supported this country on human rights – regardless of how seriously they violated human rights, or how far they were from catching up with its standards – the US abandoned human rights,” he said.

The spokesman then shifted to the move by a number of countries to boycott the Beijing Winter Olympics.

He said the US and the European countries, which imposed the boycott once more showed their disregard for common principles of humanity by politicizing the games.
Khatibzadeh pledged that Iran will take part in the winter Olympics “at a good level”

Biden says US will ‘respond decisively’ If Russia invades Ukraine

Biden held a phone conversation with Zelensky on Sunday discussing the upcoming talks with Russia on security guarantees, the White House press service reported following the conversation.

“The leaders expressed support for diplomatic efforts, starting next week with the bilateral Strategic Stability Dialogue, at NATO through the NATO-Russia Council, and at the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. President Biden underscored the commitment of the United States and its allies and partners to the principle of ‘nothing about you without you’,” the press service noted.

The American leader also told Zelensky that the US supported Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and “made clear that the United States and its allies and partners will respond decisively if Russia further invades Ukraine.”

Additionally, Biden expressed support for confidence-building measures to de-escalate tensions in Donbass and “active diplomacy to advance the implementation of the Minsk Agreements, in support of the Normandy Format.”

Several days prior to this, overnight on December 31, Biden held a phone conversation with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. The conversation lasted 50 minutes. Kremlin Aide Yury Ushakov told journalists that the Kremlin was satisfied with the conversation which generally was constructive. According to him, the upcoming talks on security guarantees were the main subject and both leaders agreed to control them personally and maintain phone contacts.

On January 10, Geneva will host Russian-US talks on security guarantees. On January 12, Russia will discuss its concerns in the security sphere in Europe as well as the Russian projects on security guarantees at a meeting of the NATO-Russia Council in Brussels and on January 13 – at a meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council in Vienna. On December 17, the Russian Foreign Ministry published the draft agreements between Moscow and Washington on security guarantees and the measures of ensuring the security of Russia and NATO member states. These drafts were submitted to Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Karen Donfried on December 15.

Lately, in the West and Ukraine, the claims of an alleged possible Russian “invasion” into Ukrainian territory are being touted increasingly more often. Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov branded such information as the empty and groundless escalation of tension, emphasizing that Russia does not represent a threat to anyone. That said, he didn’t exclude the possibility of provocations being whipped up in order to justify such claims and warned that attempts to resolve the problem in southeastern Ukraine through the use of force would have the most serious consequences.

“Trump belongs in ash heap of history after Gen. Soleimani assassination”

“Martyr Soleimani will live forever; but those who martyred him, Trump and the likes, belong in the ash heap of history, and will be among the forgotten by the history and will get lost. Of course, God Willing, after paying for their actions here in this world,” read the tweet, posted almost exactly on the minutes that marked the second anniversary of General Soleimani’s assassination.

The Iranian commander was assassinated in a US drone strike near Baghdad Airport on January 3, 2020. The then US President Donald Trump claimed responsibility for ordering Soleimani’s assassination.
