Analyst: US wants JCPOA return free of charge

“If Americans decide to grant Iran’s demands, they should remove all sanctions and offer guarantees. But this is inconsistent with their interests,” Mohammad Sadegh Koushki told IRNA.

“Americans do not want to tie their hands by giving guarantees. Their interests rule that they return to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action without offering guarantees.”

Koushki said this is in line with the national interests of the US, but is unacceptable to Iran.

“Naturally, without US guarantees, our interests under the JCPOA will not be served and continuation of the status quo will be more favorable for our national interests and security,” he said.

Koushki stressed that the guarantees are the main sticking point and the US government and congress clearly agree that Washington should make no such pledges.

Tehran has demanded guarantees that the US will not unilaterally withdraw from the nuclear deal and impose anti-Iran sanctions again, after its return to the nuclear deal. Iran also wants verifiable removal of the sanctions.

Iran’s demands are a reaction to Washington’s unilateral withdrawal from the nuclear agreement in 2018, and the re-imposition of sanctions. Iran says the move effectively deprived the country of the economic benefits of the accord, stressing that the US should not be allowed to repeat this move.

US, UK FMs discuss nuclear talks, Ukraine

“Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken spoke with UK Foreign Secretary Elizabeth Truss today about acute and shared concerns that Russia may be considering launching further military aggression against Ukraine in the coming days,” State Department Ned Price said on Saturday night.

“Secretary Blinken emphasized the importance of working with our NATO Allies and European partners in the region to impose swift, severe costs on Russia in response to any further military aggression by Russia against Ukraine,” he added.

Over the last few months, the West has repeatedly accused Russia of planning to invade Ukraine, though Moscow categorically denies this claim. Allegations of an imminent attack have also been downplayed by Kiev. In an attempt to de-escalate the tensions, Russia has presented the US and NATO with a number of proposals on security guarantees. The bloc has rejected Moscow’s key proposals, however, including putting an end to NATO’s gradual enlargement eastward.

“They also discussed that international efforts should continue to seek a meaningful dialogue with Russia on mutual security concerns that could lead to a diplomatic resolution. Secretary Blinken reaffirmed that any decision the United States makes in Europe will be in consultation with our Allies and partners,” Price stated.

Russian President Vladimir Putin had telephone conversations with Presidents of France and the United States Emmanuel Macron and Joe Biden on Saturday. Conversations were held at requests of Paris and Washington and the situation around Ukraine expectedly became their key topic.

The Russian leader reminded his counterparts that the West does not do enough to force Ukraine to perform the Minsk Agreements and noted the Russian response to the US and NATO answers on security guarantees will be presented shortly.

Paris said after the conversation that they do not believe that Moscow “is preparing an offensive” against Ukraine, while Washington stated that it is still unclear for them whether Russia plans to achieve its goal diplomatically or “by way of using force”.

A senior US administration official said at a briefing dedicated to Saturday’s phone call between the two countries’ leaders Biden and Putin agreed that the two countries’ teams will stay engaged in the coming days.

“The two presidents agreed that our teams will stay engaged in the days ahead,” he stated, adding, “Russia may decide to proceed with military action anyway. Indeed, that is a distinct possibility.”

Kremlin Aide Yury Ushakov also told reporters on Saturday Biden in his phone conversation with Putin mentioned sanctions, but the issue was not in the spotlight of the talks.

Price has also stated “the two also discussed UK-EU negotiations over the implementation of the Northern Ireland Protocol and preserving the gains of the Belfast/Good Friday agreement, as well the importance of reaching a successful conclusion on talks with Iran on mutual return to full implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action”.

Nuclear talks between Tehran and world powers over revitalizing the Iran nuclear agreement have reached their final stage and are expected to conclude one way or the other by the end of this month, according to participants.

Iran insists that the talks must lead to the removal of all American sanctions that were imposed against Tehran following Washington’s unilateral withdrawal from the landmark agreement in May 2018. Tehran has also demanded credible guarantees that Washington will not abandon the deal again.

Iran unveils new drone in presence of defense chief

During the ceremony, held on Saturday in Tehran, Brigadier General Mohammadreza Ashtiani said the production of highly advanced drones in the Islamic Republic shows its determination to realize the slogan “We can”.

Ashtiani said undoubtedly, the UAV industry is one of the strengths of Iran when it comes to increasing the nation’s clout and its capability to defend itself against adversaries.

He said about 4 decades have passed since the formation of this industry in Iran, adding that in the forty-third anniversary of the Islamic Revolution, Iranians are witnessing the flourishing of the drone industry and the emergence of new operational achievements in this field. Referring to global trends and regional conflicts as well as different generations of weapons and combat hardware, Ashtiani said the role of drones in war theaters and various intelligence and operational missions is undeniable.

Ashtiani maintained that Iran intends to develop this highly strategic product as one of the important pillars of superior defense intelligence and reliability in various battlefields.

He however noted that Iran has a long way to go to reach the pinnacle in the sphere.

Putin holds talks with Macron over Ukraine, Iran

Putin and Macron have also discussed issues pertaining to the preservation of the of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) during a phone call on Saturday, the Kremlin said.

“The theme of the preservation and full implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on the Iranian nuclear program was touched upon,” the Kremlin added.

The Kremlin press service also announced Putin told Macron there is no substantive response of the United States and NATO to Moscow’s initiatives on security issues.

“Vladimir Putin again drew attention to the lack of a substantive US and NATO response to the well-known Russian initiatives,” according to the statement.

The Elysee Palace said Macron discussed the Ukraine crisis with Putin for one hour and 40 minutes in a phone call on Saturday.

According to an AFP source in the French president’s administration, “the conversation focused on prospects for reducing tensions in the crisis around Ukraine.”

Concerns over Moscow’s alleged preparations for an invasion into Ukraine have been increasingly announced in the West and in Kiev recently. Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov castigated these statements as an empty and groundless escalation of tension, emphasizing that Russia posed no threat to anyone. At the same time, the Kremlin press secretary did not exclude some possible provocations to justify such claims and warned that the attempts to resolve the Ukrainian conflict by force would carry extremely serious consequences.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky asked, when speaking to journalists on Saturday, for information on the alleged Russian invasion planned for February 16, if such information is available, and pointed out that the information space was abundant in reports related to a potential incursion.

“Should you or anybody else have additional information about a 100% invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation, starting on [February] 16, please give us such information,” Zelensky asked.

In addition, he stated that there is too much information on the subject in the public space.

“I believe that to date, the media space in abundant in information about a deep full-scale war from the Russian Federation, as even certain dates are suggested. We are aware of the risks and realize that such risks do exist,” the president said adding that Ukraine should remain ready for any steps “from any border,” he continued.

Azeri pres. unveils project to link Zangzur corridor to Iran, other countries

Aliev said the pipeline will use the Zangzur corridor. “We have energy ties with all four neighboring countries and are working on a new project,” Aliyev said.

He added that the Zangzur corridor is not just for railroad, land and air transportation.

According to the Azeri president, the Zangzur corridor will play a role in the export of energy resources and there will be a new line to supply electricity to the Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and from there to Europe.

Aliyev said, “A line also passes through Georgia and Turkey and this will increase exports and bring us more currency”. Aliyev’s comments come as Armenia has opposed the development of the Zangzur route and its passage through its territory. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan accused Aliyev of obstructing the opening of transport lines between the two countries.

During a recent press conference, he strongly condemned Azerbaijan’s territorial claims to the Zangzur corridor and said Baku has pursued a policy of continuous violation of Armenia’s territorial integrity. Zangzur links Nakhchivan to Azerbaijan through Armenian territory.

Egyptian political prisoner dies after ‘denial of medical care’

The Egyptian Network for Human Rights (ENHR) said that Shaheen passed away on Wednesday in the notorious Tora prison after nearly five years in detention.

Shaheen, 42, was the managing director of Azmeel Real Estate Company. He leaves behind a wife, a son, and two daughters, the organisation added.

Cairo Airport security forces arrested Shaheen on 28 April 2017 on his way back from a business trip to Saudi Arabia, Ahmet Attar, a researcher at ENHR, told MEE.

Shaheen then disappeared for one month, during which time he was physically and psychologically tortured to extract confessions of financing a terrorist group.

He then appeared at the Supreme State Security Prosecution for investigations and has since been held in pre-trial detention in Tora prison in Cairo.

Attar said that Shaheen has been subjected to many violations since his arrest, including enforced disappearance, torture, and deprivation of health care and family visits.

He was also among hundreds placed on terrorism lists arbitrarily, Attar added.

“The ENHR learned that the businessman was suffering from severe allergies, which caused many health crises for him,” Attar continued, stating, “Despite appeals to release him or provide appropriate treatment and medication in a timely manner, authorities were intransigent and instead kept him in the same unhygienic and inhumane prison conditions, including poor ventilation and overcrowding.”

“Requests to transfer him for treatment outside the prison have been rejected without providing an appropriate alternative inside the prison, which has further deteriorated his health,” Attar noted.

He was only transferred to the Tora prison hospital four days before his death. He was buried in his hometown of Menoufia.

The ENHR announced the circumstances in which Shaheen was held “amount to premeditated murder”.

Shahin is the second detainee to die in February in Egypt. Days prior to his death, 40-year-old Mohammed Abdel Hamid Ahmed Abdel Hafez also passed away after his health deteriorated due to denial of medical care, according to the Arab Organisation for Human Rights.

With Shaheen’s death, the number of deaths in custody since July 2013 has reached 918, AOHR said.

President Abdelfattah el-Sisi came to power after ousting his democratically elected predecessor Mohamed Morsi in a military coup in 2013. Since then, Sisi has been accused by local and international rights groups of overseeing the country’s worst crackdown on human rights in its modern history.

Morsi himself suffered from poor health during his five years of detention, before collapsing in court and dying in June 2019.

The UN high commissioner for human rights accused Egyptian authorities of “arbitrarily killing” the 67-year-old Morsi, who was kept in a “brutal condition” in Tora prison.
Rights groups have accused Egyptian authorities of maintaining a policy of medical negligence, torture, and ill-treatment of political prisoners, resulting in the death of 49 people in 2021. Six died in December.

Iran warns citizens in Ukraine to be prepared for emergency situation

It also called on the Iranian nationals to keep calm and remain in touch with the embassy in order to be aware of necessary recommendations.

The Iranian Embassy in Kiev said the provision of health and security for Iranian citizens is of fundamental importance and a top priority for the diplomatic mission, adding that necessary recommendations will be made known to the Iranians in next announcements.
The statement by the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Kiev comes as Western governments including the US say Russia is preparing to invade Ukraine.

The claim has caused panic in Ukraine and drawn criticism from the country’s pro-Western government.

Russia itself denies any plans on attacking Ukraine. Russia is however angry over what it calls NATO’s eastward expansion near the Russian territory. It is also warning Kiev against contemplating access to the Western military alliance.

Moscow says Ukraine’s decision to join NATO is part of a Western-backed plot to encircle Russia.
