Karzai: Iran has not withheld any assistance to Afghanistan

Karzai was speaking in an exclusive interview with the IRIB.

He added that in the last two decades and during the US-led occupation of Afghanistan, Iran had the best relations and cooperation with Afghanistan despite its differences with the US and NATO.

Asked about water dispute between the two countries and the issue of Iran’s water supply from the Helmand River, the former Afghan president said, “I always told the cabinet during my presidency that Iran is our great neighbor and if we have more water and our neighbor is suffering from water shortage and needs water, regardless of any memorandum of understanding, we should give more water to Iran as it’s a neighborly tradition.”

He also advised the current rulers of Afghanistan not to hesitate to supply water to Iran.

Karzai also spoke of the US move to seize Afghan assets in American banks in favor of the 9/11 victims’ families. He called the decision “wrong and oppressive”.

“In the 9/11 attacks, Afghans were not even aware of the events and had no involvement in them, so taking the victim’s money is a cruel act and the United States must return the money to the Afghan people,” he said.

On Afghanistan’s occupation, the former president said the US military action caused a big trouble and huge casualties among Afghan people.

Asked about crimes committed by US troops in Afghanistan, Karzai said it’s the duty of governments to administer justice when such crimes happen and that Afghans only want peace and development.

In reply to the question that why he didn’t leave Afghanistan after the Taliban takeover of Kabul, Karzai said, “Despite concerns, Afghanistan is our home and we do not leave our home and we stay here even in difficult situations.”

Iranian president: Government seeks to make foreign policy balanced

He said it is not right to say that his administration is looking to the east and that it’s only seeking to develop relations with all countries and create a balance in the Islamic Republic’s foreign policy.

He then outlined his administration’s strategy in this regard, saying in the first step, the government has seriously pursued the lifting of sanctions, and in the second, it is seeking to lift the sanctions in quite dignified negotiations.

The President noted that his administration is following the nuclear talks in full accordance with the principles and framework set by the leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution, and has not and will not back down from any of its red lines.

Raisi also spoke of the government’s economic record during its first year. The president said the budget bill for the next Iranian year was prepared without a deficit and by taking into account the realization of an 8% economic growth, while in previous years the average growth was about 4 tenths of a percent.

He said according to the next year’s budget bill, if costs are controlled, revenues increase and cash flow is directed toward production, this goal will be within reach.

‘Removal of oil sanctions no concession to Iran amid soaring crude prices’

Oil

“Given the international developments, especially the developments in Ukraine and the rising global oil prices, it is the United States and Europe that need Iran,” the daily wrote on Tuesday as the fate of the talks between Iran and the P4+1 group in Vienna remained cloudy.

The Keyhan referred to reports that Senior U.S. officials have flown to Venezuela for rare talks with Nicolas Maduro’s government as America views the Latin American country’s oil as a potential substitute for Russian crude with Washington currently weighing more sanctions on Moscow over the conflict with Ukraine.

The United States and the European troika [France, Germany and the UK] believe that Iranian oil should also enter the world market to contain the energy crisis and Westerners want to portray this as a privilege to be granted to Iran, the daily said.

It noted that the anti-Iran sanctions are no longer effective as the country is exporting more than 1.5 million barrels of oil per day.

Iran Foreign Ministry official’s take on Raisi Qatar visit, Tehran-Riyadh talks

Enayati said in an interview with the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) that Raisi’s trip to Qatar last month indicated that his administration attaches great importance to ties with neighboring countries including the Persian Gulf states.

He referred to the signing of fourteen memoranda of understanding between the two sides, calling it one of the most important parts of the visit which showed that the two neighbors have extensive cooperation in different fields.

He praised the bilateral agreement to waive travel visas between Iran and Qatar as one of the important political deals during the trip.

Enayati noted that the two countries possess some of the world’s largest gas reserves and can have long-term cooperation in this field.

Iran-Saudi Arabia negotiations

The senior Iranian Foreign Ministry official went on to say that Saudi Arabia is pursuing negotiations to resolve its problems with Iran and that Tehran welcomes this approach.

He noted that the two countries have held four rounds of talks in Iraq over the past year, expressing hope that the dialog will reduce misunderstandings.

The Iraqi government has been brokering negotiations between Riyadh and Tehran on mending relations which were cut in 2016.

“Our progress has been minimal. That is, we cannot look at this issue optimistically and say that 100% of what we expected has been achieved, we can neither consider it zero,” Enayati explained.

He described the return of Iranian diplomats to Jeddah in January to take up posts at the headquarters of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation as a small step forward
