The Azeri president noted that he was confident this new corridor will create new breakthroughs in economic, transportation and energy spheres.

EU’s Mora: Delegates ‘almost there’ on reaching agreement in Vienna

EU Deputy Foreign Policy Chief Enrique Mora

Speaking to reporters on Friday, EU coordinator Enrique Mora said he hoped the negotiations would resume “very very soon,” and that he would continue working with all the teams to help resolve the outstanding topics.

The EU diplomat, who has been chairing the talks, added delegations had got to the point of “negotiating footnotes.”

He praised the United States and Iran, in particular, for to their “very constructive, very positive approach.”

Eleven months of negotiations between Tehran and the P4+1 group of states are said to be near completion.

Earlier in the day, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell announced the pause, citing “external factors” in a tweet.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry said the pause could create a momentum for resolving the remaining issues. It, however, stressed that external factors would not affect the will to move ahead with a collective agreement.

There has been media speculation that Russia’s new demands for guarantees from the US are delaying the talks, a claim rejected by Moscow’s envoy to the negotiations, Mikhail Ulyanov.

“The conclusion of the deal does not depend on Russia only,” he told reporters. “There are other actors who need additional time and who have additional concerns, and they are being discussed.”

In turn, the Chinese envoy, Wang Qun, also expressed hope that the negotiators would return within the next days, saying that there are still some issues that need to be finalized.

Meanwhile the British envoy, Stephanie al-Qaq, expressed disappointment with the pause and said a “fair and comprehensive” deal was ready for conclusion.

“Iran + US have worked hard to resolve final issues. E3 ready to conclude this deal now. External factors must be resolved in next few days or agreement likely to unravel,” she said in a tweet.

Iran: Vienna talks pause to serve as momentum to resolve issues

Saeed Khatibzadeh, the ministry’s spokesman said in a tweet on Friday that Iran and the P4+1 group are focused on successfully concluding the negotiations.

The Foreign Ministry spokesman said no external factor will be able to affect the joint will of the parties to the talks to reach a collective agreement.

He made those comments while quoting a tweet from EU Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell that announced a pause in the Vienna discussions due to ‘external factors.’ Borrell did not specify what these factors are.

He however noted that the final text of the deal between Iran and the P4+1 namely Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany is ready and on the table.

The coordinator of the Vienna talks said he will continue to be in touch with all JCPOA signatories and the US to overcome the current situation and to finalize the agreement.

Meanwhile following the announcement of the pause in the talks, the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) quoted a source close to the Iranian delegation in Vienna that the US and Russia must resolve a dispute that is to blame for the hiatus.

The source added the dispute between Moscow and Washington has nothing to do with the Iran-P4+1 talks in Vienna.

US says Iran nuclear deal “close”, end of talks challenging

White House

“Our view is that we are close. We have been close for some time now, and we also — for the last several weeks, as we’ve been talking about,” White House spokesperson Jen Psaki said Thursday.

“We also all know, from having been through these negotiations before, that the end of negotiations is always when the difficult and challenging parts of the conversation typically take place. So, I wouldn’t make that assessment or echo that from here,” she added.

“We are continuing to have these diplomatic talks. It is in all of our interests to stay at the negotiating table. And that’s what our plan is to do from here,” she continued.

The US State Department has also announced Washington has no intention of offering Russia anything new or specific as it relates to sanctions on Moscow in talks to reach a nuclear deal with Iran.

On Thursday, State Department spokesperson Ned Price told reporters a nuclear deal with Iran is down to a small number of outstanding issues and called on all parties, including Russia, to focus on resolving the final issues to reach a deal.

Earlier, the Iranian foreign minister told the EU foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, talks that making of new demands by the US has no logical justification and this contradicts the country’s stance on swiftly reaching an agreement.

Referring to the Vienna talks aimed at removing the anti-Iran sanctions and the revival of the Iran nuclear deal, Hossein Amir Abdollahian added that the main issues and sanctions removal must not be affected by the excessive demands on the part of the US.

The top Iranian diplomat also said the US cannot convey a new and different message to the Iranian negotiating team through the coordinator under the pretext of being under the pressure of the American public opinion.

“If the US faces a problem in terms of public opinion, I should say that we also face the problem of public opinion in Iran; they are monitoring the developments very closely and carefully and seek answers from the government and demand it get the sanctions lifted and preserve a highly peaceful nuclear energy,” he stressed.

Borrell, for his part, said the Vienna negotiations are at a critical juncture and now the US and Iran must show more flexibility in their message exchanges and must try to overcome the time limit.

Borrell stated that economic guarantees are important for Iran and the EU supports this, adding, “You and we will continue our efforts to reach a deal because we have come a long way. You Iranians are tough and highly capable negotiators.”

Saudi officials confirm drone attack on oil refinery caused fire

The act of “sabotage and terrorism” follows a series of similar attacks on Saudi facilities by Yemen’s Huthi rebels, who are fighting a Saudi-led coalition. The attack took place in the early hours of Thursday morning.

“The Riyadh oil refinery was attacked by a drone, resulting in a small fire that has been brought under control,” the energy ministry said, according to the official Saudi Press Agency, without directly blaming the Huthis.

“The attack did not result in any injury or death, nor was the supply of oil or its derivatives affected,” it added.

Brent oil prices have seesawed between $139 and $105 in extreme volatility this week, after the war in Ukraine prompted concerns over supplies. Saudi Arabia, one of the world’s biggest oil exporters, and its partners in the OPEC alliance have come under pressure to raise production to help rein in prices.

Saudi Arabia launched the devastating war against Yemen in March 2015 in collaboration with a number of its allies and with arms and logistics support from the US and several Western states.

The objective was to bring back to power the former Riyadh-backed regime and crush the popular Ansarullah resistance movement, which has been running state affairs in the absence of an effective government in Yemen.

The war has stopped well short of all of its goals, despite killing hundreds of thousands of Yemenis and turning the entire country into the scene of the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.

Iran Covid: Daily cases of infection on decline

According to the figures released on Friday, the ministry said the new cases brought the total number of infections since early 2020 to 7,117,544.

The respiratory disease also claimed 139 people in the past day, the figures said. The ministry said 751 people were also hospitalized due to severe infection.

Meanwhile, the national inoculation campaign continues non-stop across the country, with 144,133,593 doses of both home-made and exported vaccines having been administered so far. The new data showed 24,794,304 people have so far received a third booster shot.

Health experts believe the fast pace of vaccinations has been the key to Iran’s success in bringing under control the six wave of Covid-19 infections, which was triggered by the Omicron variant.

Tehran officially opens new Plasco high-rise 5 years after tragic fire

During the opening ceremony on Friday, which was attended by a number of Tehran’s provincial officials, the commercial units of the newly-constructed complex were handed over to the merchants who had lost their shops in the burnt-down building.

The new building has been constructed in an area of about 20,000 meters and contains 346 commercial units.

The former building, which was home to a shopping center and hundreds of clothing suppliers, collapsed on January 19, 2017 after it was engulfed by a huge blaze, sending shockwaves across the country.

It happened while firefighters and emergency services personnel were still evacuating people from the inferno. Twenty firefighters lost their lives trying to contain the flames. The old building was known to have breached multiple safety regulations.

EU says pause in nuclear talks needed, citing “external factors”

High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy

“A pause in ViennaTalks is needed, due to external factors”, Borrell wrote on Twitter, adding, “a final text is essentially ready and on the table.”

“As coordinator, I will, with my team, continue to be in touch with all JCPOA participants and the US to overcome the current situation and to close the agreement,” he continued.

On Thursday, the Iranian foreign minister told Borrell talks that making of new demands by the US has no logical justification and this contradicts the country’s stance on swiftly reaching an agreement.

Referring to the Vienna talks aimed at removing the anti-Iran sanctions and the revival of the Iran nuclear deal, Hossein Amir Abdollahian added that the main issues and sanctions removal must not be affected by the excessive demands on the part of the US.

Expert: US push for tying JCPOA to non-nuclear issues futile

Vienna talks

Amir Ali Abolfat’h said the US push for a new deal after the 2015 nuclear agreement, JCPOA, has failed and American officials themselves have realized this.

Abolfat’h however noted that the US efforts to make Iran accept JCPOA II and III is nothing new. He said the Islamic Republic of Iran has not given in to pressures over the matter and it is resolved to prevent any change in the wording of the JCPOA.

Abolfat’h added that Iran’s major demand in the Vienna talks is verification and that the other side has no objection to this.

The political commentator also said Iran must make sure that it will be able to sell oil and receive the revenues.
