Sources say US hardens position on designation of IRGC

IRGC

An agreement to restore the 2015 nuclear deal is nearly complete, but Iran’s demand that President Joe Biden reverse former President Donald Trump’s decision to designate the IRGC as a Foreign Terrorist Organization is one of the last remaining sticking points.

In recent weeks, US envoy for Iran Rob Malley negotiated the IRGC point indirectly with the Iranians through EU political director Enrique Mora.

One of the proposals raised by the US in the negotiations was that the Biden administration would remove the IRGC from the FTO blacklist in return for a public commitment from Iran to de-escalation in the region.

The Iranians didn’t agree to the US demand and suggested giving the US a private side letter instead, two US sources and one Israeli official told Axios.

As time passed, the White House became increasingly concerned about the domestic political fallout of some kind of a deal with Iran regarding the IRGC and started cooling down to the idea, the two US sources added.

Democratic Sens. Ben Cardin and Bob Menendez publicly criticized the possibility of removing the IRGC from the terror blacklist.

Republicans have also expressed outrage over the possible move. Three former senior national security officials in the Trump administration called the move “dangerous capitulation” in a joint statement issued on Tuesday.

A White House National Security Council spokesperson stated the portrayal of the indirect talks with the Iranians regarding the IRGC wasn’t accurate.

“As we have said, the president will re-enter JCPOA if it’s in the best interest of America’s national security and fully returns Iran to its nuclear commitments. There remain a number of outstanding gaps in these negotiations. The onus on closing these gaps rests with Iran,” the NSC spokesperson added.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian told his Iraqi counterpart that Iran has offered some initiatives to the US through the EU coordinator regarding the highly important remaining issues and stressed the onus is now on the US side to show good faith, the Iranian Foreign Ministry announced in a statement.

State Department spokesperson Ned Price hinted on Monday that the US is waiting until after the two-week Nowruz holiday to determine whether Iran is willing to move on its demands.

Price on Tuesday said the Biden administration has long discussed “alternatives” with France, Germany, the UK, Israel and Persian Gulf countries to prepare for a scenario where there is no return to the 2015 nuclear deal.

“We will have a good sense of all of this before long,” he added.

Iran FM to President Assad: Tehran to continue supporting Syria

Amir Abdolahian Bashar Assad

During the meeting, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian and President Assad also held talks over bilateral cooperation as well as regional and international developments.

Amir Abdollahian congratulated Assad on Syria’s political and field successes and underlined the Islamic Republic of Iran’s continued support for the government and people of Syria.

The top Iranian diplomat said in the realm of economic and trade cooperation between the two countries, a new chapter has begun in relations.

Amir Abdollahian added that the expansion of economic cooperation between Iran and Syria is seriously on the agenda of bilateral relations, and that Tehran and Damascus are considering easing transportation and transit between the two countries.

The foreign minister maintained that in this regard, popular interactions and exchanges between Iran and Syria are also important.

Amir Abdollahian welcomed the trend of the normalization of ties between regional countries and Syria.

He further referred to the common views of Iran and Syria about many of the regional and international issues, underlining that as for regional tensions, the Islamic republic opposes any war and supports resolution of disputes through dialog and political means.

Amir Abdollahian added that in light of this policy, Iran wants the Yemen crisis to be resolved through talks between Yemeni factions and it believes that a change in the behavior of some regional countries can pave the way for finding a solution to the Yemen crisis.

He then spoke of the developments in Ukraine, stressing, “We oppose both war and sanctions. The Ukraine crisis can only be resolved through political means.”

As for the Vienna talks, Amir Abdollahian maintained that Iran and the other parties to the negotiations are close to a deal but despite their claim that they are interested in the settlement of disputes and reaching a deal, the Americans must show their good will in action.

In the meeting, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad also referred to the dramatic developments in the region, saying after the US defeat in Afghanistan, and especially after the developments in Ukraine, it has become clear that Washington and NATO could not advance their agenda in the world.

Therefore, he added, regional countries are after new alliances as a replacement for the US support.

Assad then referred to double standards on the part of some countries, saying they are have not taken a position on the Zionist regime’s attacks against Syria and are keeping silent in this regard.

The Syrian president rejected as baseless, the US officials’ claims that Washington has goodwill and described the Islamic Republic of Iran’s stance in the Vienna talks as wise and sound.

Assad then stressed that what is important for Damascus is Iran’s views on the Vienna talks and Syria’s support in this regard.

IRGC commander warns Israel against any miscalculation

Major General Hossein Salami

Major General Hossein Salami said the White House officially announced that sanctions have made Iran more powerful than ever before.

Salami added, “We have entered a century that will definitely be the age of the decline of evil powers and of the West.”

Salami noted that the US decline started many years ago with the outbreak of the Islamic Revolution in Iran and this trend has accelerated in recent years.

He added that the previous century was set by the enemies and the Western powers as the century of captivity for Muslims and the oppressed but that age is over now.

Salami also said Iran is pushing ahead under the leadership of a great leader and everyone saw that the Islamic Republic did not kneel before other countries.

The IRGC commander maintained that Iran’s enemies are in retreat and their policies are no longer effective vis-à-vis the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Salami also issued a strong warning to the Zionist regime, saying Iran will immediately revenge on Tel Aviv in the event of any miscalculation on the part of the regime.

Khatibzadeh: Iran’s policy on Palestine inexorable

Saeed Khatibzadeh

Khatibzadeh made the comment at the meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Islamabad on Wednesday.

Khatibzadeh also said the OIC was founded on the principle of supporting the Palestinian cause, adding the return of all Palestinians to their land and the formation of an independent Palestinian state with al-Quds as its eternal capital must be the top priority of all the OIC members.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman added that it’s deeply regrettable that the Palestinian people are still suffering from the continued occupation of their land by the Zionist regime 50 years after the formation of the OIC.

In further comments, Khatibzadeh criticized some Arab countries for normalizing ties with the Zionist regime, saying the move goes against the stance of the OIC which has time and again opposed any form of normalization with Tel Aviv.

He noted that experience shows the Zionist regime’s sole goal is to weaken and partition Islamic countries.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman said, “We should know that normalization with this usurper regime is a flagrant oppression against the people of Palestine and strengthening this trend will further embolden the regime to assault the shaky sovereignty of Palestinians over the territories which are under their control.”

Khatibzadeh also spoke about the situation in Afghanistan.

He said the crisis in Afghanistan is the result of the US’s irresponsible and flawed policies over the past two decades. He said Iran views stability in Kabul as stability in Tehran and will do its utmost to restore peace in Afghanistan.
