Envoy: Iran preparing documents to join Shanghai Cooperation Organization

Iran- Shanghai Cooperation Organization

“The process of obtaining full membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization consists of numerous stages that a candidate country needs to implement within the established time frame,” he pointed out.

“According to the schedule, Iran is preparing documents, passing through these stages and notifying the Shanghai Cooperation Organization on a regular basis,” he added.

Russia and Iran are actively developing bilateral cooperation and major events are expected to take place in their relations, Jalali stated.

“Since the beginning of 2022, the two countries have been extensively exchanging political and economic delegations. Over this period, the two countries’ presidents have had numerous contacts, both personal and over the phone and they will have a meeting and talks in the near future,” he continued.

“It demonstrates the closeness of the comprehensive relations between our countries. In the future, we will witness major events in bilateral ties,” he noted.

According to the Iranian diplomat, Moscow and Tehran are actively cooperating within multilateral formats.

“As for multilateral formats, Iran and Russia are seriously cooperating with each other too. Iran’s membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and its talks with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) toward the signing of permanent agreements on free trade, as well as the Iranian president’s participation in the BRICS summit, show that the countries have close positions and a lot od areas for cooperation,” he said.

Earlier, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated Moscow and Tehran may shift away from estimating mutual trade volumes in dollars as cooperation between the two countries steps up in the economy, particularly in the banking sector.

“Last year trade and economic relations between the two countries slightly surpassed $4 bln. Though it is probably incorrect to estimate them in US dollars and moving forward, we will perhaps shift away from this practice, as our cooperation in the banking, financial area steps up,” he added.

Asked when trade turnover between Russia and Iran may go beyond the current $4 bln to $10-15 bln, Peskov noted that it might be even higher.

“This is a realistic guideline for us, the potential of the two countries is huge, with large reserves in place,” he continued.

Russian President Vladimir Putin will hold meetings with Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during his visit to Tehran on July 19, Peskov said.

He noted that the main purpose of Putin’s visit to Tehran is to participate in the Astana Troika summit.

“In addition, our president has three meetings scheduled: these are talks with President Raisi, with President Erdogan, and the president will also pay a visit to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei. We hope it will be a very comprehensive dialogue,” the Kremlin spokesman added.

According to him, the leaders will be able to discuss bilateral relations at the meetings, “first and foremost, trade and economic relations with both Iran and Turkey.”

“[There will be] prospects and all modalities for continuing the political dialogue with both Iran and Turkey, and exchanging views on the most relevant topics, because there are so many hot spots around us that need our cooperation in order to resolve them,” Peskov noted, pointing out the topics of the upcoming talks.

Iraqi president calls for compromise between Iran and Arab countries

Iraqi President Barham Salih

Speaking in an interview with CNN’s GPS program, Salih added that Iraq plays a key role in brokering talks between Iran and Saudi Arabia and noted that numerous rounds of talks between Tehran and other Arab countries have happened in Baghdad.

While underlining the need for a compromise and reconciliation between Iran and Arab countries, the Iraqi president said an agreement is also needed to revive the Iran nuclear deal.

Salih noted that the crises in the West Asia region have no military solution and all stalemates must be resolved through diplomatic means.

He noted that a security order must be put in place in West Asia that would get countries together for fighting terrorism.

He also described the tacit alliance between the Zionist regime and Saudi Arabia as an agenda aimed at repeating the horrible tragedies of the past.

Salih called for the return of Syria to the group of regional countries and said all regional governments must join hands to get Syria out of the chaos with which it has grappled for a long time.

The Iraqi president further said regional countries need a structure that could interconnect their economies and that they need to take joint action to fight climate change.

“Iran-Russia trade grew by over 81 percent in 2021”

Iran Trade

Hadi Tizhoush said correct implementation of the financial and banking memorandum of understanding between Moscow and Tehran will facilitate the exchange of trade figures.

Tizhoush also referred to the Russian president’s extension of preferred trade with Eurasian countries, saying such moves can pave the way for increased trade between the two sides and leave a positive impact on the volume of trade between Iran and the Russian Federation too.

He however noted there is a need to change in the view about exports in order to transform on-oil exports.

The chairman of the Iran-Russia chamber of commerce blamed sanctions on Iran’s banking sector for lack of expected growth in trade.

Tizhoush said the removal of this obstacle can create a favorable condition for importers and exporters.

Kremlin: Russia and Iran to ditch dollar in trades

Dollar

Peskov addressed President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Iran, stating that Moscow and Tehran are reliable friends and partners.

He also stressed that the two nations will gradually abandon the practice of using US dollars to assess the scope of bilateral trade.

“We all know that trade and economic relations between the two countries slightly exceeded four billion US dollars last year, although it may be wrong to count it in US dollars, and over time, we will probably move away from this practice as we develop our cooperation in the banking financial sector,” Peskov told the Iranian state broadcaster in an interview, which was also aired by Rossiya 24 TV.

The official also noted that net trade between Russia and Iran grew 31 percent just over the last few months, adding that the trend is positive.

According to him, Russia and Iran have an opportunity to build cooperation to mitigate the effect of sanctions.

Iran has been under sanctions for more than a decade and has adapted well to developing and improving the well-being of its people, despite the restrictions, the official said, noting that Russia is also accustomed to sanctions.

“I think that we have an opportunity to build bilateral cooperation that will allow us to minimize the damage from these bilateral sanctions,” Peskov continued.

Peskov also expressed hope that a cooperation agreement will be signed shortly after some amendments are approved.

“We hope [the deal will be signed] soon (…) after some additional changes are made and agreed upon, taking into account the opinion of the Iranian side. It will be possible to sign the deal fairly quickly and in the near future,” he concluded.

Amid his visit to the Islamic Republic, President Putin is expected to meet his Iranian counterpart Ebrahim Raisi, as well as Supreme Leader of Iran Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei. He will also hold talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to negotiate most pressing issues, Kremlin spokesman continued.

Former Iranian rights chief Larijani says US policies outdated

Mohammad Javad Larijani

Mohammad Javad Larijani also referred to US president Joe Biden’s visit to occupied Palestine, saying the US and the Zionist regime vowed during the trip that they will not let Iran acquire nukes.

He added that if Iran wants to build nuclear arms, nobody can stop the country.

He was echoing remarks by former Iranian foreign minister Kamal Kharrazi.

Larijani further pointed to a fatwa (religious decree) issued by the leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution that bans the production and stockpiling of nuclear weapons.

He suggested that the US policies are outdated and are “just as Joe Biden’s age.”

Larijani noted that the US policies are ineffective in the face of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

“The I.R. of Iran supports any process/initiative that leads to lasting peace, stability and security in the region. Bilateral talks and intra-regional dialogues ( 3+3 Mechanism / Iran-Russia-Turkey+Azerbaijan-Armenia-Georgia) are the best for a long-term stability and cooperation in the South Caucasus,” Mousavi said.

The foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan met in Georgia for their first bilateral meeting since 2020 when thousands died in a conflict over control of Nagorno-Karabakh, Euro News reported.
