Iran president vows response to Israel’s assassination of Iranian military advisors in Syria

Ebrahim Raisi

President Raisi strongly condemned the attack, promising that the Islamic Republic of Iran won’t let this go unanswered.

Five Iranian military advisors with the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) were killed in an Israel’s airstrike in the Syrian capital, Damascus.

They were IRGC military advisors deployed to Syria to help with the fight against Takfiri terrorism.

Israel has carried out a number of airstrikes in Syria over the past few weeks, targeting IRGC personnel.

The Iranian military advisors are in Syria at the official invitation of the Syrian government.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman has earlier warned that Tehran reserves the right to act in kind over Israel’s assassination of the four military advisors.

Israeli drone raid kills 2 Hamas members in Lebanon: Media

Israel Attack Lebanon

Lebanon’s media outlets, citing local sources, reported that the attack was carried out on Saturday afternoon as the vehicle was traveling along a road linking the Bazourieh area to Burj el-Shemali region in the southern district of Tyre.

The Israeli drone attack came amid strikes by fighters from Lebanon’s movement Hezbollah against Israeli military positions in response to the ongoing Israeli genocidal campaign in the besieged Gaza Strip.

It has been a string of assassinations by the regime in the recent past.

On January 2, senior Hamas official Saleh al-Arouri was assassinated in a “treacherous Zionist strike” on Beirut’s southern suburb of Dahiyeh, the Gaza-based movement announced on its official channel.

Arouri was known to be deeply involved in Hamas’ military affairs. He had previously headed the group in the occupied West Bank.

The Israeli regime launched its devastating hostilities in the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023, after Hamas carried out surprise Operation Al-Aqsa Storm against the occupying entity.

The Israeli military has also been carrying out attacks against the Lebanese territory since then, prompting retaliatory strikes from Hezbollah. The movement has vowed to keep up retaliatory operations as long as the regime continues its onslaught on Gaza.

The regime has killed almost 25,000 people, most of them women and children, in the blockaded enclave since.

Ministry: Gaza death toll nears 25,000

Gaza War

At least 165 Palestinians have been killed and 280 injured in the last 24 hours, and people are still trapped under rubble as Israeli forces continue their assault on the besieged Gaza Strip, the territory’s Health Ministry said in a statement on Saturday.

“The Israeli occupation committed 14 massacres against families in the Gaza Strip, leaving 165 martyrs and 280 injured during the past 24 hours,” the ministry added.

“Many people are still trapped under rubble and on the roads as rescuers are unable to reach them,” the statement read.

With the latest Palestinian casualties, the death toll from Israel’s ongoing attacks on Gaza since Oct. 7 has risen to 24,927, with 62,388 others injured, the ministry said.

Israel has pounded the Gaza Strip since a cross-border attack by Hamas on Oct. 7, which Tel Aviv says killed nearly 1,200 people.

According to the UN, around 85% of Gazans have been displaced by the Israeli onslaught, while all of them are food insecure. Hundreds of thousands of people are living without shelter, and less than half of aid trucks are entering the territory than before the start of the conflict.

Sources say Iran and US use Saudi Arabia to swap messages and cool regional tensions

Raisi and MbS

High-ranking officials in Riyadh have been instrumental in relaying messages between the countries and reducing tensions over Israel’s war on Gaza.

The process began in November, when Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian attended an emergency summit in Riyadh on the Gaza war attended by leaders from the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and Arab League countries.

An Iranian insider familiar with the matter told MEE that Amirabdollahian carried with him a message for the US to give to Saudi officials. It was a response to one recently received from Washington.

The Saudis then conveyed this message to senior officials in Washington, the source added.

Another source in Iran’s foreign ministry told MEE that Saudi Arabia has been used as a conduit between the two sides alongside Oman, Qatar and Switzerland, which occasionally represents the US diplomatically in Tehran.

The four countries have had to work as go-betweens repeatedly since the 7 October Hamas-led attack on Israel and the war on Gaza.

Iran is the Palestinian group’s strongest backer, and other Iranian-associated groups such as Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthi movement in Yemen have attacked Israel and Israeli- and US-linked targets as Israel’s assault on Gaza has escalated.

According to the foreign ministry source, the communications passed between Iran and the US have primarily focused on curbing tensions and avoiding greater escalation in the region.

The source stated Tehran had warned the US about the potential consequences if Israel’s war on Gaza, which has already killed 25,000 people, brings regional tensions to an uncontrollable level.

These included Israel being defeated in a broader regional war and increased security pressure on the US military.

The first source said Saudi Arabia has been used as a conduit when tensions have ramped up following Israel’s assassination of senior commanders from the “Axis of Resistance”, the Iran-backed group of countries and armed groups in the region.

After Israel killed Seyyed Razi Mousavi, the Iranian military advisor in Syria, on 25 December, a Saudi delegation visited Tehran with a message from Washington that said the US wanted to contain the conflict in Gaza.

According to the first source, the US suggested potential concessions from Israel. One was that the US would not give backing or support to hard-right Israeli officials, which dominate Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government.

This, the source added, would be contingent on Iran not trying to derail efforts to establish full ties between Israel and Saudi Arabia, a process that was interrupted by the outbreak of the Gaza war.

On 8 January, Hossein Akbari, the Iranian ambassador to Syria, said that Iran had received a message from “one of the Persian Gulf countries”.

According to Akbari, this country sent a delegation to Iran with a message from the Americans, offering a plan to resolve conflicts for the entire region, rather than solely addressing the Gaza war. MEE understands this Persian Gulf country was Saudi Arabia.

Another Iranian insider told MEE that Washington used Saudi channels to inform Tehran that it was about to strike Yemen’s Houthis, who have been staging attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea to disrupt Israeli supplies and commerce.

The message urged Iran to restrain its allied groups during the US strike. It also indicated that the strikes on the Houthis would not initially be too strong, but if Tehran reacted forcefully then a fierce US response would follow.

US and UK forces carried out a first round of air strikes on the Yemeni group on 12 January.

That day, during a tour of a coffee shop in Allentown, Pennsylvania, US President Joe Biden said: “I’ve already delivered the message to Iran. They know not to do anything. We will make sure we respond to the Houthis if they continue this outrageous behaviour along with our allies.”

This ongoing communication between Washington and Tehran betrays a desire by both sides to reduce tensions and avoid a larger regional war, a former Iranian diplomat told MEE.

However, the unofficial understanding between Iran and the US to keep things under control is being tested by increased attacks by Iranian-backed Iraqi armed groups on US targets, the former diplomat acknowledged.

Last year, Iran and the US struck a deal that significantly eased tensions.

The United States gave Iran some sanctions relief on oil sales, and in return Tehran agreed to curb attacks by its allies on US targets and decrease uranium enrichment. Iran released five prisoners with US citizenship in return for five Iranians in American prisons being given clemency and $6bn of Iranian assets being unfrozen.

The former diplomat warned that unless a new agreement or understanding is reached between Iran and the US, a possible nuclear crisis could break out alongside the Gaza war or in its aftermath.

Saudi Arabia’s involvement as an interlocutor is significant. In March, Tehran and Riyadh agreed to resume full diplomatic ties and reopen embassies.

The diplomatic breakthrough was brokered by China after seven years of extreme hostility, prompted by the 2016 Saudi execution of Shia Muslim cleric Nimr al-Nimr.

In response to his death, Iranian protesters stormed the Saudi embassy in Tehran, with Riyadh subsequently severing ties that were already strained by a number of disagreements over issues in the region, such as the Syrian war.

Iran says reserves right to retaliation for Israel assassination of Iranian advisors in Syria

Nasser Kanaani

Nasser Kanaani has strongly condemned as murderous and aggressive, an Israeli attack on Saturday morning on the residential district of Mazzeh in Damascus that killed four military advisors of the Islamic Revolution Gaurds Corps (IRGC) and a number of local forces.

Kanaani said that the “repeated violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria and the escalation of aggressive and provocative attacks on various targets in the country” by the Israeli regime shows the helplessness of Tel Aviv on the battlefield against resistance forces in Gaza and the West Bank.

Kanaani added that it’s appropriate for governments and regional and international organizations, including the UN Security Council to give a clear response to the “aggressive, terrorist and criminal acts of the Zionist regime” and condemn them decisively.

He stressed that the military advisors of the Islamic Republic of Iran are in Syria at the official invitation of the Syrian government and have been playing an important role in helping Syria in its fight against terrorism.

Kanaani underscored that the assassination of the Iranian military advisors by the Zionist regime “clearly shows the deep and organized link between this terrorist regime and different terror and Daesh-style groups in the region.”

The Foreign Ministry spokesman also stressed that the Islamic Republic of Iran reserves the right to respond in kind to Israel’s organized terrorism at the right time and place in addition to pursuing these aggressive and criminal acts through political, legal and international channels.

Ukraine decries Russian leadership’s ‘insanity’ amid war

Russia Ukraine War
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky visits combat brigades engaged in offensive operations in the Bakhmut sector, Ukraine, on September 5.

“Because of the insanity of Russian leadership, all nations around the world are facing a period of uncertainty and insecurity,” Zelensky said in his evening video message broadcast in Kiev on Friday.

“The world is becoming increasingly aware that more wars may be on the horizon,” Zelensky also wrote on the social network X, the former Twitter.

“But we have the strength to stop this. We have the strength to preserve normal life. The world has it. And this strength must be put to use right now to stop Russia.”

“I am grateful to everyone who defends Ukraine, everyone who works for Ukraine, and everyone who remembers that the primary goal is to provide Ukraine with all the tools it needs to expel the occupiers. We will certainly do so,” he added.

Once again, Zelensky called on the international community to join forces to defeat Russia.

Ukraine, which has been facing a full-scale Russian assault since February 2022, is dependent on arms and ammunition supplies from the West for its defence.

Zelensky once again thanked the international allies for their help. The most important goal was to provide the country with everything it needs to drive out the Russian occupiers.

He also paid special tribute to the defenders for their fight for Ukraine. Zelensky once again honoured the country’s “heroes” by handing over title deeds for flats.

Two mothers are killed in Gaza every hour: UN

Gaza War

The Gaza crisis is impacting women and girls at unprecedented levels with loss of life and catastrophic levels of humanitarian needs, finds UN Women’s “Gender Alert: The Gendered Impact of the Crisis in Gaza”.

Nearly 25,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, according to the Ministry of Health in Gaza. Around 70 percent of the people killed in Gaza are estimated to be women and children, including two mothers per hour killed since the beginning of the crisis.

More than 1.9 million people, or 85 percent of the total population of Gaza, are believed to have been displaced, including what UN Women estimates to be nearly 1 million women and girls. The entire population of Gaza — roughly 2.2 million people — is in crisis or worse levels of acute food insecurity, it says.

UN Women estimates that at least 3,000 women may have become widows and heads of households, and at least 10,000 children may have lost their fathers. In this context, more women fear that families will resort to desperate coping mechanisms, including early marriage.

“We have seen evidenced once more that women and children are the first victims of conflict and that our duty to seek peace is a duty to them,” stated UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous in a statement.

In the past 15 years, two-thirds of all civilians killed in the occupied Palestinian territory were men. Less than 14 percent were women and girls. That percentage has reversed in the current crisis. Today, 70 percent of those killed are women and children, she added.

“These are people, not numbers, and we are failing them. That failure, and the generational trauma inflicted on the Palestinian people over these 100 days and counting, will haunt us all for generations to come.”

Bahous called for an end to the war in Gaza.

“However much we mourn the situation of the women and girls of Gaza today, we will mourn further tomorrow without unrestricted humanitarian assistance and an end to the destruction and killing. … I call again for an immediate humanitarian cease-fire and unhindered humanitarian access for all those in Gaza, including the provision of vital assistance and services to all women and girls,” she continued.

“This is a time for peace. We owe this to all Israeli and Palestinian women and girls. This is not their conflict. They must no longer pay its price.”

Women-led and women’s rights organizations continue to operate despite the escalation of hostilities, according to the report.

Some 83 percent of women’s organizations surveyed in the Gaza Strip are at least partially operational, mainly focusing on the emergency response. However, UN Women’s analysis of funding to the 2023 Flash Appeal reveals that only 0.09 percent of funding has directly gone to national or local women’s rights organizations.

Through a six-month response plan, UN Women in Palestine has been providing life-saving assistance to over 14,000 women-headed households, one-third of all women-headed households in Gaza; and supporting the distribution of clothing, sanitary products, and baby formula. UN Women is also partnering with women-led organizations to deliver gender-responsive services for gender-based violence; establishing women-led protection and response committees in shelters for displaced women; and convening regular consultations with women’s organizations in Palestine, according to the report.

IRGC: Four Iranian military advisors assassinated in Israeli strike on Damascus

Israel Attack Syria

The statement read, “The evil and criminal Zionist regime invaded the Syrian capital Damascus, and during the airstrike by the aggressor and usurper regime, a number of Syrian forces and four Iranian military advisers were martyred.”

According to earlier reports, an Israeli missile strike targeted a four-storey building in the al-Mezzah area in Damascus and completely demolished the building.

The strike caused a large plume of smoke to billow into the sky. The area was cordoned off with ambulances and rescue teams.

The neighborhood also houses UN headquarters, embassies and restaurants.

Iran launches Soraya satellite into orbit 750 km above earth

Iran satellite

Issa Zarepour, in a message of X social media platform, wrote, “A new record was set in the height of the launch. An hour ago, Qaem 100 satellite carrier successfully placed its cargo in 750 km orbit.”

The Soraya satellite, launched by the Islamic Revolution Guard Corp’s (IRGC) three-stage satellite carrier, raised the bar for Iran’s satellite technology which had previously reached 500 kilometers from the earth.

The sub-orbital launch of the satellite carrier was successfully carried out last year.

Defense minister: Iran uses all available means to defend nation, territorial integrity

Iran's Defense Minister Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Ashtiani

Commenting on targeting anti-Iran terrorist groups in Iraq, Syria and Pakistan by the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) last week, Brigadier General Mohammadreza Ashtiani said on Saturday that, “The Islamic Republic uses all means to defend its territorial integrity and people.”

He dismissed accusations that Iran violated the three neighboring countries’ territorial integrity but added, “We do not accept any threats against us from the neighboring countries.”

Iran says it targeted a terrorist group’s base in Syria, and an Israeli Mossad spy agency’s espionage center in northern Iraq in response to terrorist attacks inside Iran. It also hit two bases of ‘Jaish ul-Adl’ terror outfit in Pakistan in retaliation for several attacks on Iranian soil in recent years. The move drew an angry reaction from Pakistan that reciprocated the attack, before it announced that the relations are back to normal.

Brigadier General Ashtiani said Iran’s priority is to inform the neighboring countries of the provocative moves by terror groups well in advance, adding the IRGC got militarily involved after the countries failed to take care of the threat posed against Iran.

The defense minister argued that Iran’s move was within the framework of international laws.
