Iran Confirms Turkish FM’s Surprise Visit to Tehran

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi announced that Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu has paid a short unscheduled visit to Tehran on Thursday, August 18.

“The visit was aimed at following up on the agreements reached during [Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad] Zarif’s recent trip to Ankara,” Qassemi said on Friday, as reported by Mehr and edited by IFP.

During their 5-hour meeting, Foreign Minister Zarif and his Turkish counterpart held talks on latest regional developments as well as Tehran-Ankara bilateral ties, he added.

“During Foreign Minister Zarif’s visit to Turkey last week, it was agreed upon that the two countries’ officials keep in touch constantly, either officially or unofficially.”

Therefore, he noted, it is expected that several meetings be held between Iranian and Turkish officials in the near future,” Qassemi went on to say.
